F o rg in g a C u ltu re o f S a fe ty VIDEO REVIEW Video reviews by John Malec.ky
Forging a Culture of Safety By Anthony Avillo Available from: FSP Books & Videos 433 Main Street Hudson, MA 01749-1330 1-800-522-8528 E-mail: support@firepolice.ems.com www.fire-police-ems.com Price: $95.00 (DVD) This is a classroom presenta tion given by a 28-year veteran of the fire service at the time, who is now retired. He was a deputy chief at the time o f an urban fire department that covered five mu nicipalities in Hudson County, New Jersey, the smallest but most congested county in the state and possibly the country. The class is made up of firefighters from the Heartland. Although these two ju risdictions are not identical in fire load, demographics and hazards, etc., the knowledge presented is common and that is safety and
discipline on and off the fireground. The goal is to accomplish the mission with effective strate gies while keeping firefighters safe from injury and death. The disk is 115 minutes in length, but I can assure you that unless you are fatigued when you view it, you will not fall asleep. The content is presented in a down to earth manner supported by photos, videos and tables of statistics. The photos are both on the fire ground as well as pre-fire assessments o f structures and what hazards they can present. Personal safety is stressed and ex amples are shown on how fire fighters become their own enemies by lack o f discipline and laziness, as well as perhaps by a lack o f training. Self discipline is the primary requirement for offi cers to effectively lead their crews and work in unison with other re sponding companies. It starts at the station with rules and regula tions being stressed. As a fire fighter serves his or her time in their career, knowledge o f the job and the types o f construction in their jurisdiction benefits them to live to retire. This is a presentation that is highly recommended.
ACTION SHOT I f you have photos you would like to see in our “ Action Shot”feature, please upload them on our website, www.lstResponderNews.com or email them to Lindsey@lstResponderNews.com.

THANKSGIVING
Vehicle News
Chaplain’s Corner Pastor Fernando Villicana
DAMIEN DANIS
Point Pleasant Fire Dept. Engine 7551 is a 2021 Sutphen Monarch 2000/1000, sold by Blaze Emergency Equipment.
Well, no matter how difficult the situation or how tumultuous the sea son may be, there’ s always some thing to be thankful for. This month our entire nation will celebrate Thanksgiving. Supermarkets will sell more turkeys in a single month than all the combined turkeys the whole year. Turkeys will be carved, dinners planned, drinks will be served, fam ily gathered together. The irony of it is that very little thanks to God dur ing Thanksgiving. We are so busy preparing, cooking, entertaining, watching football and eating, that about the only real thanks that gets done on Thanksgiving is done in a single prayer before the big meal. And it’ s usually done by one person. Truth be told, millions will miss the whole point and original intent of this holiday - to give thanks to God for what H e’ s done in our lives. The Bible tells us: "Everything has come from You and everything belongs to You" (1 Chronicles 29:16). It all starts with recognizing and affirming that God is the source of all good! Everything that we enjoy in life is a gift from God. Even when things don’ t seem to go our way God tells us to thank Him. In everything give thanks; for
this is the will o f God in Christ Jesus for you ”(1 Thessalonians 5:18). I want to emphasize the opening word in this scripture - “ IN”every thing. In the middle of your chal lenge, disappointment, discouragement, hardship, trial... give thanks to ‘ God. Why? Because there’ s always more in life to be thankful for, than to gripe about. In spite of any difficulty you may be experiencing, here’ s a list of things every Believer should thank God for. "I will not forget the glorious things God does for me. He forgives all my sins. He heals me. He ransoms me from hell. He surrounds me with love. He fills my life with good things. He is merciful and tender to those who don't deserve it (grace). He is slow to get angry. He never bears a grudge. He has not punished us as we de serve for our sins ”(Psalms 103:2-11 (LB) Just to name a few. So, when you carve that turkey, slice the pumpkin pie, watch the game, share good times with your family - remember to thank God IN everything. God has blessed us and “... is the giver o f all good things. ” Happy Thanksgiving Fernando Villicana Fire Service Chaplain

Jersey City officials gathered at the foot of Grand Street on the morning of September 11th to remember those lost as a result of the terrorism attacks on our country in 2001. This location, oppo site lower Manhattan, was a large triage site for those transported to Jersey City via boats, including FDNY Marine 1. The Freedom Tower now stands tall on the other side of the Hudson.

NEW RESCUE IN CHATHAM TOWNSHIP; KME TO MOVE In Morris County, the Chatham Township Volunteer Fire Department placed in service a new Sutphen heavy rescue truck. It replaces a 2001 Inter national 4900/E-ONE heavy rescue which I had always found attractive (and still do). A photo of the old and new trucks is on page 12 of the Sep tember issue under “Old & New". The new truck, equally attractive in my opinion, keeps the same major fire fighting components as the former unit, namely a 300-GPM pump, 300gallon water tank and 30-gallon foam tank. To be more specific, the truck has a Monarch chassis powered by a Cummins X12, 500 hp diesel engine (which combined provides more seat ing and probably a more powerful motor), a Hale APS-30-23 pump, UPF 300-gallon water tank, Foam Pro 2002 system, 30-gallon Class “B ” foam tank, 1 M-inch front bumper line, Ramsey four-ton winch, N orcold re frigerator, 20-foot non-walk-in body with rear access to the top, On Spot tire chains, Harrison 6-kw generator, Will Burt Night Scan and FRC light ing. The news about the REV Group re locating the KM E factory in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania and Roanoke, Virginia, is recent and at this time there are few further details other than the brand will be built in other existing factories. There have been unofficial stories circulating beyond this, but until information becom es fact, we will mark time. In the photos besides the Chatham Township rescue are apparatus from Red Bank in Monmouth County and the City o f Orange (Essex County). From Red Bank are two oldies but goodies, namely Engine 94, a 2006 Seagrave Marauder and Tower 90, a 2000 American LaFrance Eagle mid mount platform. Their latest two ap paratus are twin Ferrara Cinder pumpers for Engines 96 and 93. From Orange we have Engine 4, a 2021 Fer rara Igniter quint and for Squad 1 a 2021 Ferrara Cider MVP rescue pumper. With these two additions, the City of Orange now has five Ferrara apparatus at their headquarters station. In dealer news, Fire & Safety Serv ices reports the follow ing Pierce de liveries: an Enforcer Heavy Duty Rescue Pumper to the Ocean View FC in Dennis Township (Cape May County) and a Saber pumper to Mor ristown (Morris County). It is Morris town’ s first Pierce unit. Pierce orders include an Impel pumper for Rockaway Township (Morris County), an Enforcer pumper for W oodland Park (Passaic County), an Enforcer 107foot Ascendant aerial for the Southard FRC in Howell Township (Monmouth County) and an Enforcer Heavy Duty Rescue Pumper for River Edge (Bergen County). VCI Emergency Vehicle Specialists reports the follow ing Horton ambu lance deliveries: in Burlington County, a 553 stock remount on a 2021 Ford E-450 chassis to the Lenola EM S StaPlease send any com m ents o r news tidbits you might have about A pparatus o f the M onth to us at 1st R espon d er News, 1 A rdm ore Street New Windsor, NY 12553.
