Accident at mall
Buffalo battles late night house fire
Town of Newburgh, NY. In the afternoon hours of September 5, 2013, Winona Lake Engine Company and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services were alerted to a motor vehicle accident in the Newburgh Mall parking lot. They arrived to find a vehicle into a pole with one injury. The driver of the vehicle was quickly packaged and transported to a local hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.
Buffalo firefighters responded just before 4 a.m. on October 2nd to a reported structure at 51 Norman Street on the city's South Side. Arriving firefighters reported a boarded up two and a half story wood frame with smoke showing. After forcing entry, crews advanced several handlines into the building. At one point during the fire, crews were forced to temporarily halt their advance as they experienced water supply problems. The problem was quickly resolved and an aggressive interior attack finished off the rest of the fire. The fire caused $50,000 in damage to the building and the fire is under investigation.

Executive Director Thomas LaBelle stepping down from NYSAFC The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs board of directors is both saddened and excited to announce that longtime Executive Director Thomas LaBelle will be stepping down from that position in early October. He has accepted a position as division chief of volunteer services with the Albemarle County (VA) Department of Fire Rescue. Tom LaBelle JUMP TO FILE has been with #100213115 NYSAFC since 1995, and served as our government affairs executive, deputy executive director, and executive director/CEO. LaBelle has represented our organization to the membership and our partners in the fire service world for nearly 20 years. He has championed many of our legislative endeavors and has been the source of information and guidance to many fire chiefs in the Empire State. LaBelle has over 20 years of experiences in the emergency services, most recently serving as an assistant chief with the North Greenbush Fire District in Rensselaer County. In addition, he is a writer for a national fire service website and serves on national committees that address volunteer and combination department leadership issues. With the Albemarle County (VA) Department of Fire Rescue, LaBelle will be responsible to ensure that the county continues to develop a vibrant volunteer fire and rescue force by working closely with all volunteer members and with the fire and emergency medical services board. The Albemarle County Fire Rescue system is a combination volunteer and career service that provides fire suppression, emergency medical, special operations, and community risk reduction services. Several years ago, the NYSAFC board of directors began to actively plan for the eventual replacement of our executive director. The board is currently carrying out that plan to begin an orderly transition. Information regarding this position should be forthcoming within the coming weeks. It should be noted that LaBelle has agreed to assist us in this very crucial transition period. Please join us in wishing Tom LaBelle and his family the very best and much success as he embarks on his new journey and career in the Virginia fire service.

pied residence next door. A 90 year old woman was rescued by the City of Newburgh Police Department, after they arrived at the scene earlier. According to published reports, four firefighters sustained minor injuries at the scene. Two buildings were destroyed by the inferno. No civilian injuries were reported. - HEATHER PILLSWORTH

Electrical problem causes fire Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle a blaze at 24 Goulding Ave. on the city's East Side on September 18th. Engine Co. 21 was dispatched for an electrical problem. Lt. Tom Krasinski reported heavy fire in the wall extending to the second floor. He requested the balance of a full box. Firefighters used two-one and three quarter inch hand lines and 40' of ladders to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Three of the new six command cars were on this box. Damage was heavy.
Clifton Park, NY. Wednesday, September 11th was a busy day in the Vischer Ferry Fire District. Firefighters battled two structure fires at the same time. Then, they responded to a third a few hours later. The first blaze JUMP TO FILE broke out at 357 #091213102 Riverview Road, across the street from Vischer Ferry Fire Station #1. The bulk of the fire was in the back of the building, sending flames through the roof and heavy black smoke into the air. Crews from numerous departments responded, in part, due to the 95 degree temperatures and high humidity. As crews battled that blaze, they received a call for another confirmed working structure fire at 564 Englemore Road. That building also had heavy fire in the rear with flames shooting through the roof. Some crews were sent from the first fire to the second. Others were called in from departments that had been placed on standby when the first fire broke out. Both buildings suffered heavy damage. No injuries were reported but at least one firefighter received treatment due to the heat. A few hours later, after both scenes were cleared, crews were called to a third fire, this one at 18 Barcelona Drive. Causes for all three remain under investigation. - MIKE CAREY

unsuccessful. The dog was later removed by Town of Milton Animal Control. The family snake and cat survived the fire and were turned over to the homeowner. Incident command called in resources from Rock City Falls (Milton Eagles) and a FAST team from the City of Saratoga Springs Fire Department. Malta Ridge relocated a crew to the Eagle-Matt Lee fire station for a cover assignment. Commu-
nity Emergency Corps was on standby at the scene for firefighter safety. The Fire-Police Unit was kept busy detouring local traffic around the fire scene as Greenfield Avenue is a heavily traveled county roadway. Greenfield Avenue was reopened at about 6:45 p.m. There were no injuries reported during the incident. The Saratoga County Cause and Origin Team responded to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire. - STAN DE LONG

No greater love than within the brotherhood On March 22, 1986 while buffing a fire in Newark (NJ) at Station 1446 at 8:55 a.m. for a Signal 11 plus an additional Signal 9 fire, located at 424 So. 18th. Street., I was walking around with my son Ken at the fire. We came up to Newark’s Engine 18. I asked the driver, Firefighter Greg Sereico, if Ken could sit in the rig for a picture. He said sure “but wait”, and he put his helmet on Ken’s head. I took the picture. Greg, Ken and I got to be great friends over the years. Greg became Ken’s mentor. In 1997, Ken got appointed to the Buffalo Fire Department, and on September 16, 2013, when Ken got promoted to Lieutenant, Greg now a Battalion Chief with the Newark Fire Department, surprised him by traveling to Buffalo with his wife Debbie, to attend the promotion ceremony. That evening Greg and Debbie took Ken, his daughter Liz, my wife

It was the Newark Engine 18 helmet that Greg put on Ken at the fire the first time they met 25 years ago! Greg said, “You know what this helmet means to me. Rockland County’s Technical Rescue Team trains on “Pick Off” Maneuver For the past several months, the Rockland County’s Technical Rescue Team has conducted monthly drills on high angle rescues. On September 8th, the team trained on performing a "Pick Off". A “Pick Off” is a maneuver where a rescuer rappels to a victim who may be stuck on the side of a building or structure, such as a window washer. This several hour training session showed the members that by means of a mechanical advantage device, the rescuer takes the weight of the victim on their rappelling system and then removes the victim from their location. The rescuer, with the victim attached, then continues to the ground as a single unit. Several evolutions were conducted during the training. All members of the team are volunteers from various fire, police and EMS agencies in the county.

Lightning causes barn fire in Morristown On September 11th at 10:04 p.m., the Morristown Fire & Rescue Company was dispatched to a reported barn fire at 483 Gilmour Road in the town of Morristown. The fire was called in during a severe lightning storm. While en route to the scene, Morristown Chief Kevin Crosby (25-1) requested all equipment from the Brier Hill and Heuvelton Fire Departments and tankers from the Hammond. At 10:08 p.m., the Morristown fire department responded with two pumpers, two tankers, one heavy rescue and an ambulance. Chief Crosby reported a 60x120 barn with approximately 12,000 bales of hay fully engulfed and showing from both ends of the structure. He additionally requested the Lisbon, Gouverneur and Redwood Fire Department tankers. Morristown Engine 33 dropped their porta-tank and laid four inch onto the second driveway and set up to protect the main house and work garage. Command set up three draft

sites, one at the boat launch in Black Lake and two in the Village of Morristown at Bayside Park to fill tankers. Firefighters pulled their attack lines off and protected exposures during one of the worst storms Chief Kevin Crosby had seen, but they weren’t deterred. They held their ground and protected the three exposures with lightning coming down everywhere. Crews flowed well over one million gallons of water onto the fire, which was determined to be accidental from a lightning strike. There were no injuries and no animals were injured. The building had no insurance. The Morristown and Brier Hill Auxiliaries were also on scene. The Morristown Fire Department checked back in service at 7:30 a.m.

Smoke Showin VIDEO REVIEW Video reviews by John Malecky
Available from: FSP Books & Videos 188 Central Street, Suite #4 Hudson, MA 01749-1330 1-800-522-8528 E-mail: support@fire-policeems.com www.fire-police-ems.com Price: $24.95 (DVD) This DVD is 60 minutes in length and much of it shows vegetation fires in California with structure fires intermingled. The first fire was in the Angeles National Forest, the Williams Fire in San Gabriel Canyon. The fire took two days and was started by a vehicle being parked on dry grass. The video shows a number of air tankers dropping retardant and helicopters siphoning water. The next fire is a greater alarm at Palo Alto and Belmont in Los Angeles City and involved a two story commercial structure. The fire has possession of the second floor and is through the roof. Handlines, deck guns and ladderpipes operate to quell this incident. A structure fire in a wood frame private dwelling in Twain Hart, California is attacked by members of Cal Fire. Heavy fire is showing and interior crews advance while outside lines take care of exterior burning keeping the fire in check. Truck work by crews with a saw and hand tools vent at the peak of the roof. A vegetation fire in Soulsbyville in Tuolumne County is fought by Cal Fire and the CDF (California Division of Forestry) using among other things, dozers and air tankers. Another vegetation fire in Penns Gulch, Murphys, California is fought by air tankers, The view can see one take off from base. Super Scoopers which are CL-415 fixed wing air tankers are featured “up close and personal” in the final segment. These planes, which I believe a built by Canadair are contracted with the Los Angeles County FD and are at their Air Attack Base in Van Nuys, California. These planes demonstrate how they can swoop down in a reservoir, for instance and fill their water tanks without stopping and then respond or return to the fire. This video will take us to a different aspect of firefighting, one which many of us are not familiar.

Big workout – small time frame… FIREFIGHTER FITNESS Lori Ann Hodgkinson
Who isn’t in a rush these days? One of my current clients has just started a new job. Her child’s school schedule has changed and of course nothing coincides with her previously scheduled workout sessions. Normally we train for 45 minutes four days per week. We can still manage two of those days, but haven’t been able to find 45 minute time blocks anywhere else. Here’s what we have been doing this past month, and so far so good. As I mentioned we have two 45 minute sessions per week, but to compensate for the other two 45 minutes sessions lost, we have been training an additional four days for 20 minutes. It’s still ten minutes shy in total of her previous schedule, but she has actually dropped two lbs, a couple of inches and her body fat % has decreased slightly as well. The 20 minute workouts, although brief, are of higher intensity than her old workouts and contain exercises that are big on movement (and use more than one muscle group at a time). Here’s a sample: We warm up with three minutes of walking. Then it’s over to the stability ball for the jackknife (see instructions at the end of this column). She performs as many as possible in 30 seconds (without using momentum or sacrificing form or alignment). Next (without resting) it’s straight to squats with shoulder presses (perform dumbbell shoulder presses on the “up” segment of the squat). Again, as with all of the exercises in this workout, it’s as many proper reps in 30 seconds. Moving right along. It’s over to the stability ball again. This time, it’s for push-ups combined with the jackknife. The pattern is three push-ups followed by one jacknife for the 30 second duration. Then, we combine bent-over rows with tricep kickbacks. We finish out the circuit by combining lunges and bicep curls. The arms are curled during the “down segment” of the lunge. The pattern is five lunges/bicep curls with the right leg forward followed by five with the left until time has expired. (Sometimes it’s walking lunges and the right and left legs are alternated.) Believe it or not, at this point, we have only been training for about six minutes (including the three minute warm-up). It’s a quick water break (small sips) and back to complete the cir-
cuit a total of two more times. After three full circuits, the workout has taken about 13-15 minutes. I usually use a basic two minute ab routine consisting of crunches and twists as her cool down and finish up by stretching her out during the final three to five minutes. Of course, I vary the exercises from workout to workout, but continue to combine movements as well as attempt to use exercises that use big movements. On those two days that we are still able to get in the full 45 minutes, we do a bit more isolation (single movement/muscle exercises) and more traditional cardio with occasional intervals inserted. If your schedule has changed, constantly changes, you are short on time, or are just looking for a change; try putting together something like the sample just described. They say “change is good”. In this case, so far they are right. My client, as I mentioned, is enjoying great success with this new plan. I will be sure to change it up enough so that it continues to be the case. Remember to have your physician’s approval before beginning any exercise program. The stability ball jackknife: Assume a push-up position with your arms completely straight. Rest your shins on a stability ball. Your body should form a straight line from your head to your ankles. Abdominals tight. Without losing your lower-back posture, roll the stability ball toward your chest by pulling it forward with your feet. Pause, and then return to starting position by lowering your hips and rolling the ball backward.

Garage fire spreads to vacant house Buffalo firefighters responded in the early afternoon of October 3rd to a reported structure fire at 16 Melvin Place. First in Engine 25 reported a one story wood garage fully involved with an exposure on the #4 side. The exposure was a two and half story vacant wood frame. Crews used twotwo and a half inch handlines on the garage and three-one and three quarter inch hoses to extinguish the fire that extended into the house. Access was limited since the building was located on the end of a narrow dead end street. An extra two engines and one ladder were called to fight the blaze. Damage was listed at $20,000 to the garage and $30,000 to the house. The vinyl siding of the house across the street also suffered damage due to the radiant heat of the garage fire.

Claims serviCe... It’s where the rubber meets the road Fancy packaging, discounted pricing and potential dividends mean very little if your VFBL provider denies your claim or handles it poorly. Discounts and dividends don’t really concern the injured volunteer who needs diagnostic testing or surgery that isn’t being approved. When your volunteer is injured in the line of duty, no one provides better claims service than Fire Districts Mutual... No One! If taking care of your injured volunteer is high on your priority list, you need to talk with us. Heroes Mortgage Program
Firefighters flock to mortgage booth to praise program at New Jersey Firemen’s Convention It’s become an annual event at the famed New Jersey Firemen’s Convention in Wildwood, N.J. There was the Heroes Mortgage Program booth, flocked by satisfied clients and excited potential new customers. Once again, the Heroes Mortgage Program was the biggest attraction at one of the biggest events in the country. Of course it was. The Heroes Mortgage Program, brought to you by 1st Responder and Sun Home Loans, continues to deliver discounted fees and low interest rates for firefighters and other members of the valued emergency services community. “Due to the success of the program and past visits to Wildwood, we expected a healthy crowd,” said Joseph Belsito, Publisher of 1st Responder. “But, every year, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger, which means a lot. This mortgage opportunity is saving these fine men and women a lot of money. To hear their stories, to meet them in person,
makes it all the more rewarding. We look forward to continuing our cherished relationship with the emergency services community.” Whether purchasing a new home or refinancing an existing one, the Heroes Mortgage Program is offered exclusively, providing personal service, benefits and rates not normally available to the general public. Sun Home Loans offers solutions for purchasing and refinancing, even if you have debt or if you are in need of credit repair, which was a popular topic at the New Jersey Firemen’s Convention. If you are considering a home purchase, it can be important to eliminate excess credit card debt before applying for new loans and accruing more debt. If you already own a home, you can tap into its equity to consolidate stress-inducing credit card debt. By combining your debt into one loan, you can stave off demanding creditors, reduce your interest rate, and pay off your loan within a shorter period of time. Even if you have been managing to make regular pay-
ments to credit card companies, you are probably paying unnecessarily high interest rates. An experienced Sun Home Loans representative will come up with a cost-effective solution that works best for you and your family. Not only that, Sun Homes Loans’ pledge is to be at your side, from your initial inquiry, until closing. Whether purchasing a new home or refinancing an existing one, the Heroes Mortgage Program is offered exclusively, providing personal service, benefits and rates not normally available to the general public. To receive more information about the program and its benefits, contact Steven Testa at stesta@sunnb.com or call 973615-9745. Sun National Bank Home Loans and 1st Responder Newspaper are not affiliated. All loans subject to approval. Certain conditions and fees may apply. Mortgage financing provided by Sun National Bank Loans, Equal Housing Lender.

Laugh your way to the bank with a stand-up comedy fund-raiser
DAVID F. KAZMIERCZAK
High rise response Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to 465 Main St. in the heart of downtown on September 9th. Smoke was visible on several floors. The old National Fuel building was being renovated with some cutting operations being done. Smoke was also reported in another building on Washington St. This came in through the ventilation system from the adjacent building. Companies were on the scene for over an hour. PPV fans were used to clear the smoke and employees were allowed to return to their offices.
Who needs to laugh more than the Fire Companies ---the first responders who deal with dangerous circumstances each and every day? There’s an innovative concept for fund-raising developed by Joey Novick, who is a stand-up comedian and the Fire Commissioner in his hometown: Stand-up comedy shows. Fire companies can get much-needed laughs and profit financially as well. Novick's company, ComedyWorks, provides all-star headline comedians from HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, Last Comic Standing, and the Tonight Show. Novick’s been producing comedy shows since 1977, and has experience producing shows with such comedians as Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy, and Tim Allen. "The comedians were very funny, and very professional," wrote Mark Bruhmuller, Fire Chief of the Churchtown Fire Company of New York. “Joey Novick did an excellent job. Everybody loves to laugh, and it's a great deal of fun." ComedyWorks produces more than 300 shows a year, almost 150 of those for emergency service organizations. The money these shows can
VENDOR TIDBITS Notes from the emergency service business community
raise varies, depending on things like the number of tickets sold, how they're priced, the amount spent on promotion and whether food and drink are available. "Mostly companies produce shows in their own facilities, which may hold 300–400 people," says Novick. "We'll put together a show for them that will bring in comedians from major comedy clubs, with a headliner from HBO, Comedy Central, or the Tonight Show. The feature performer will be someone who's headlined the comedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star, the Improv, the Comedy Store. The host of the show will be a comedian who's very high-energy, like a gameshow host, to get the audience warmed up. A triple headliner show!” The Somerset Fire Company of New Jersey produces two fundraisers a year through ComedyWorks. "We've done about ten shows so far, and it's been great," says Mike Rein-
beck, who coordinates the shows for the 65-member volunteer department. "A friend of mine who had used Joey told me, 'This guy books really good acts.' So, we did the first show, everything was great, and we've been doing shows with Joey ever since." "I find their people to be very funny," agrees Adam Hubney, chief of the Atlantic Highlands Volunteer Fire Department in New Jersey, which books comedians through ComedyWorks for its annual dinner. "We have a professional comedy club in our county, and the quality is just as good." Comedy Works provides a 30-page ‘How-To’ guide that assists organizations through the comedy show production and warns of mistakes to avoid. "We make sure they follow everything in the guide," says Novick. "If a company has never done this before, it gives you everything from you need to know. We make sure that things get done right. Clients who follow the guide always do very well and tend to make money.” For information on Comedy Works, call 1 (888) 782-4589, go to www.comedyworks.org or e-mail joeynovick@earthlink.net.

Rombout Fire Commissioner Terry Muller with his mother Venda, Rombout 1st Assistant Chief John Lucariello, Company President Tony Cefaloni, Chuck E. Thiess and Fire Commissioner Chairman Bill Muller unveil a plaque in tribute to "Tag" Muller.
The story behind Rombout ax Fishkill, NY. It was about 25 years ago when Rombout Fire Company purchased its first brand new apparatus and sold the used 1957 American LaFrance Engine 2 to an upstate fire department to make room for the new rig. Rombout Firefighter and Driver Tag JUMP TO FILE # Muller helped 071513129 the delivery company get the engine on the flatbed and prepped it for the trip. When he was done, he entered the firehouse ready room where a few of his fellow firefighters were hanging out waiting for the next call. Tag handed fellow member Chuck E. Theiss a fire ax and Chuck E. asked “What is this?” Tag explained to Chuck E. and the group that when the truck with Engine 2 on it pulled out of the parking lot, the fire ax fell off the engine. A few guys chuckled about it, Tag then told Chuck E. to take it home and to keep the ax because it part of the first equipment purchased by Rombout. Chuck asked “What are we going to do with the ax?” Tag answered that they would find a purpose for the fire ax and to “Hang on to it.” So, Chuck E., not to question his best friend, went home and hung the ax in his basement. Every few years, Chuck would ask Tag what he wanted to do with the fire ax and the answer was always be the same, we will find a purpose for it and to “hang on to it.”
So, the fire ax stayed in Chuck’s basement. Many years later, Tag was elected to the Board of Commissioners and at that time Chuck suggested to use the fire ax on a plaque to commemorate the event, but Tag told him we will find a better purpose for it and to “hang on to it.” So, the fire ax continued to stay in Chuck’s basement. In January of 2013, Rombout members were shocked to learn of Tag Muller’s sudden death. One day Tag was at the firehouse and the next day, the department was at his funeral. He was still serving as commissioner and had just retired from his job. Like most fire departments, there are some members who departments will be forever grateful to and their loss is felt by many. Tag was one of those guys. Well, soon after the funeral, Chuck Theiss was in the ready room, he knew he found a purpose for that old fire ax. With the help of his father, Chuck G Theiss, and Brian Allison; they designed and built a plaque commemorating the life and the dedication of Tag Muller. The plaque, which will hang in the Rombout ready room, was unveiled to Tag’s widow Venda and one of her sons, Terry, who is serving the remainder of his father 2013 term as commissioner. The plaque reads Terry “Tag” Muller, Firefighter, Driver, Commissioner, and Friend. - KEVIN BARRY
