Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

Meeting of the Minds conference PAGE 4
August, 2015
Boomers & Beyond - Westchester
More than 300 healthcare professionals, care partners and individuals living with or dealing with Alzheimer’s disease attended the first annual Hudson Valley region’s dementia conference, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association - Hudson Valley Chapter. Billed as a full day of engaging, connecting and learning, the Meeting of the Minds 2015 was held on Tuesday, June 9th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown.
Alzheimer’s is one of the most pressing health concerns of today and our future, yet many cases go undiagnosed. The local lives impacted by this disease was well illustrated by the number of people in the conference rooms.
Alzheimer's is the only leading cause of death among the top 10 in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression – yet.
It is the most expensive condition in the nation. Nearly 1 in 5 Medicare dollars is spent on a person with Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, if nothing is done, the cost of Alzheimer’s is expected to increase fivefold by midcentury from $226 billion in 2015 to $1.1 trillion in 2050, effectively breaking the Medicare system.
Lunch Speaker Dr. Keith Fargo Progress in Research
Key speakers were renowned experts in the field. They included Dr. John Zeisel, a national and global leader in compassionate and ethical care of persons living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias; Dr. Keith Fargo and Dr. James Hendrix, both of the Alzheimer’s Association Science and Research programs. A special afternoon session, the 12th Annual Adele Rohrlich Lecture, featured caregiving innovator, the dynamic Teepa Snow. Breakout sessions for Spanish speakers were led by Medicaid Advisory Group director, Licet Valois.
Presenting and featured sponsors included a generous local family who struggled with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and United Hebrew – New Rochelle and Willow Towers.

In this month’s Boomers & Beyond’s page 6, we want to share with you 6 ways to stay active this summer. 1. Visit your local senior center Community senior centers offer a wide-variety of activities to help their members stay active. 2. Join a walking club Walking clubs can be a wonderful change to walking alone or indoors. Many seniors find walking far more enjoyable in a group and it is a great low-impact exercise that can increase heart rate and build muscle. 3. Go dancing Dancing for 30 minutes a day can often help reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke and can even be an effective form of physical therapy for seniors. It also improves balance and builds lean muscle. 4. Make a splash For those suffering from arthritis, swimming can be a nice alternative to walking. Swimming a few laps or participating in a water aerobics class can help to increase heart rate and build muscle without risking injury or pain to joints and stiff muscles. 5. Do some gardening Lifting, raking, digging and even weeding are great forms of exercise for seniors. The repetitive movement helps to build muscle in the arms, back and legs. 6. Take a balance class Balance classes are wonderful for those seniors who not only want to stay active, but also are at risk for falling. Get in touch at info@healthcarenewspaper.com.

The Bristal to launch ‘Our Place Memory Café’ for those suffering with memory loss Monthly program will provide a haven for Westchester residents dealing with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease
The Bristal at White Plains has announced that it will launch in August a free monthly program for residents in Westchester County suffering with memory loss. Called Our Place Memory Café, the program will provide a haven for seniors suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory loss, as well as their family members and caregivers. Light refreshments and entertainment will be provided in a support group atmosphere. Our Place Memory Café will kick off on Tuesday, August 4 at North Street Tavern & Wood Fired Pizza, 1128 North Street, White Plains from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will continue on the first Tuesday of every month through April (except for November, which will occur on the first Wednesday due to Election Day). The program is sponsored by The Bristal at White Plains and the law firm of Helwig, Henderson, LaMagna & Spinola L.L.P. Those with memory concerns may attend the Memory Café with a family member, friend or caregiver. Space is limited. To register, call Helwig, Henderson, LaMagna & Spinola L.L.P. at (914) 437-5955.
“We know firsthand how memory loss can be challenging for the person dealing with it, as well as his or her family, friends and caregivers. That is why we decided to provide a resource in our local community where we can provide support,” said Dean Brown, Director of Business Development for The Bristal at White Plains and The Bristal at Armonk. “Our Place Memory Café is a place to meet others in a relaxed, friendly and safe environment, and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and friendship,” he added. Our Place Memory Café is based on a program developed by Dr. Bere Miessen, a psychologist from Holland, who recognized the need for people living with a diagnosis of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease to continue to have a social connection. It is also important for people caring for a loved one with this diagnosis to have a place to relax, socialize, share thoughts, emotions, and to find answers. “Many seniors with Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease face social isolation from the rest of the world,” said Faraz Kayani, Executive Director of The Bristal at White Plains.
“We want to welcome them and their loved ones to a secure, welcoming and socially engaging venue, where they can feel comfortable to be themselves.”
About the Bristal at White Plains Located at 305 North Street in White Plains, The Bristal at White Plains is an assisted living community which offers the look and feel of a luxury hotel while offering enhanced assisted living. The Bristal features 116 residences and 32 apartments dedicated for residents who require memory care. Westchester Medical Center performs first MitraClip Transcatheter mitral valve repair procedure Boomers & Beyond - Westchester August, 2015
Minimally invasive heart valve repair (MitraClip procedure) offers hope to those patients deemed too high risk for traditional open mitral valve repair surgery Westchester Medical Center (WMC) recently announced that it is the first and only hospital in the Hudson Valley region to perform transcatheter mitral valve repair with the MitraClip device, a life-saving procedure to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery. The WMC Transcatheter Heart Team uses Abbott MitraClip to treat patients with symptomatic moderate to severe mitral regurgitation who are considered high or prohibitive risk for open surgery. The team, consisting of cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, echo cardiologists, radiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists, performs the procedure in the state-of-the-art hybrid OR. Only a handful of hospitals in the tri-state area perform this procedure. “It is important for us to offer all the treatment options, surgical and catheter based, to our patients” says Dr. Martin Cohen, Interventional Cardiologist and Director of Outreach and Research in Cardiology. “We have achieved a major milestone at Westchester Medical Center to now able to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery.”
“Because the procedure involves only a needle in the groin, it has made their recovery much quicker compared to traditional surgery.” says Dr. Hasan Ahmad, Interventional Cardiologist and a Heart Team member. “One of our first cases was a 94 year-old frail woman who would have been too sick for open heart surgery. She is now feeling better and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.” “There are many elderly patients and patients with many medical issues that have moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, a leak in one of their heart valves” said Dr. Gilbert Tang, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Director of Valve Disease Center at WMC. “Most physicians choose to treat these patients with medications but they often end up with heart failure and frequent hospital visits. The MitraClip procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that can dramatically improve the quality of life among these patients. There is no age limit for this therapy.” To inquire more about TAVR at Westchester Medical Center, contact the Valve Program Hotline at (914) 8301098 or e-mail HeartValve@wcmc.com. WMCHealth is the leading and pre-eminent provider of integrated health in the Hudson Valley.

Ceremony marks first “naming” of a room in Wartburg’s new Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services Building Boomers & Beyond - Westchester
Wilma Harris travelled all the way from Boca Raton, Florida recently to dedicate a room in memory of her parents that is located in Wartburg’s new, stateof-the-art Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services (ADS) building. This first “naming” of a space in the much-praised building was for the peaceful Sunroom, where ADS registrants sit and read or look onto the patio where a garden is in full bloom, or listen and watch birds in a large, enclosed sanctuary. Ms. Harris, a long time Wartburg supporter and former resident of Pelham, was accompanied by her son, Ronald, and her daughter and son-in-law, Sunny Harris and John Mulligan. The room is named after her mother and father, August Uebel and Martha Moebus Uebel. “I appreciate the Wartburg because it has been consistently helpful to the Lutherans and others for as far back as I can remember. I also feel some have the tendency to forget the importance of what Luther did,” said Wilma Harris. Surrounded by ADS registrants, staff and volunteers, she was presented with a plaque, a large bouquet of flowers and a Christopher Corr painting of Wartburg’s Fall Festival, an event her children and she have fond memories of attending for many years. "My mother was so proud to be able to donate a room in memory of her parents and to honor the very important work that the Wartburg does every day. It is hard to express the appreciation that I and our family feel for the professionalism, kindness, and graciousness that David Gentner, our President, and Angela Ciminello, our Director of Development, showed us during the entire process,” said Ronald Harris. “It is a great bonus when you make a dona-

tion to a cause in which you believe, to also have people that represent that organization be so admirable. We want to thank them and the entire staff at the Wartburg for the fine work that they are doing." "Ms. Harris is a longtime friend and supporter of Wartburg's mission and we are so very thankful to be able to present opportunities for her to make a positive impact on those we serve, said David Gentner, Wartburg President and CEO" Wartburg’s “Invest in the Difference” Campaign encourages supporters to make a perpetual gift in honor or memory of a loved one by naming a building, public area, patient/resident room or other designated areas in each building on their beautiful 34-acre campus. Ms. Harris is the first to dedicate a room in Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services Center. “It is with tremendous joy that we proudly honor Ms. Harris’s parents by dedicating the Adult Day Services Sunroom in their memory,” said Angela Ciminello,
Director of Development at Wartburg. “Wartburg deeply appreciates the generosity of its supporters, like Ms. Harris, whose benevolence allows us to continue vital programs and services that nurture the body, mind and spirit of our registrants and residents.” For more information on how to make a Legacy Gift to Wartburg, please contact Angela Ciminello, Director of Development, at 914-513-5179 or aciminello@wartburg.org. Family Services of Westchester, Inc. (FSW) welcomes new leadership at My Second Home in Mt. Kisco and opens a Second My Second Home in White Plains PAGE 12
August, 2015
Family Services of Westchester, Inc. (FSW) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karen Bisignano, LMSW, as the Director of My Second Home, our social model adult day and intergenerational program in Mt. Kisco. Ms. Bisignano replaces long-time Director Rina Bellamy, who recently left the agency in order to pursue her interests in Hospice Care and teaching. Ms. Bisignano, a resident of the Mt. Kisco/Bedford Hills community, has a strong background working with intellectually disabled adults in individual and group settings, counseling caregivers, and developing and implementing programs to improve quality of life. She also has extensive leadership experience in film/commercial production. “We are delighted to welcome Karen on board,” says Susan B. Wayne, President and CEO of FSW, “as she brings the perfect combination of business acumen, clinical experience and passion, which will continue to grow what is already an award-winning program. We know that the participants and staff of My Second Home remain in good hands.” My Second Home is the first of FSW’s two highly innovative programs that help families who are caring for older adults in Westchester County. Housed in the same building as the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center, My Second Home provides a safe, nurturing and home-like environment where older adults can continue to find meaning and dignity in their daily lives through stimulating activities,
wellness programs, personal care, excellent nutrition and “living room to living room” transportation. At My Second Home, FSW’s unique intergenerational model brings children from the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center and adults together on a daily basis to share in activities and forge relationships that promote mutual understanding and connectivity. The JEWEL (Joining Elders with Early Learners) program has been tremendously successful and has led to numerous awards and recognition: 2014 Outstanding Adult Day Center Award from the National Adult Day Services Association 2011 MindAlert Award from American Society on Aging and the MetLife Foundation 2010 Recognized by the Alliance for Children & Families for Innovation in Serving Older Adults 2008 Winner of National Best Practices Award by MetLife Foundation and Generations United 2007 Non-profit Agency of the Year, Mt. Kisco Chamber of Commerce
A New York-based documentary filmmaker, whose work has been recognized with an Academy Award® and Emmy nominations, Megan Mylan, was so touched by the power of My Second Home that she created the 2013 Living with Alzheimer’s film, My Little Friends.
The success of My Second Home prompted FSW to replicate the program in White Plains so that residents.in the southern and central regions of Westchester could benefit from similar programming. The new Lanza Family Center for All Ages houses My Second Home, as well as Early Childhood Education programs and a teen center. Specialized programming is available for each of these groups in separate wings of the building, while shared spaces allow the different age groups to come together for intergenerational activities. We welcome you to contact Karen Bisignano, Director of My Second Home, at 914-241-0770 or KBisignano@fsw.org, or Rebecca Lippel, Director of the Lanza Family Center for All Ages and My Second Home White Plains at 914-422-8100 orRLippel@fsw.org to learn more about FSW’s intergenerational programming. FSW operates more than 50 mental health and social service programs that reach 30,000 children, teens, adults and families each year. FSW’s programs run the gamut from adoption services to elder care, from home health care to youth residences and include chapters of such national programs as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Head Start and AmeriCorps. The agency’s 450 employees and 350 volunteers operate out of seven offices throughout Westchester County. To learn more about FSW, visit the agency’s website at www.fsw.org or contact Courtney Rabb at 914.305.6836 or crabb@fsw.org.

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations
Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.
Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).
My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law.

Do you ever have difficulty hearing or understanding speech in restaurants? At parties or family gatherings? Do you feel that people are mumbling all the time? Is the volume on your television creeping up? Is telephone conversation sometimes difficult to understand? If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a strong possibility that you may have some degree of hearing loss. It has been shown that if a hearing loss is present, a person has to struggle to hear speech. Undue stress is put on that individual. This stress can have a negative effect on a persons quality of life. It can cause that person to avoid many social situations. This, in turn, can cause that person to become more isolated. Over the past 15 years Westchester Audiology and Hearing Aid Specialist, P.C. has been helping people hear and communicate better by providing superior healthcare to their patients.

BCW & County Executive honor 2015 Green Business Winners Six businesses join impressive roster
Pictured are representatives from the 14 organizations that have received certification.
Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Dr. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester, recently hosted the Westchester Green Business Challenge’s 5th Annual Recognition Event and Awards Ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains. Joined by WGBC Program Directors Dani Glaser and Scott Fernqvist, organizers recognized a prestigious group of Westchester organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability and outstanding achievements. This year’s winners in their respective categories include:
· · · · ·
Outreach & Organizational Commitment: Suburban Carting Company (Briarcliff Manor) Energy: Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Tarrytown) Waste Management & Green Products: Allied Converters, Inc. (New Rochelle) Transportation: Diamond Properties, LLC (Mt. Kisco) Land Use & Water: Purchase College, State University of New York (Purchase)
“The Westchester business community has never been greener, thanks to the Westchester Green Business Challenge and its partners,” said Astorino. “Each year more business leaders are catching on that with the help of this program, they can make choices that are smart for the environment and for their bottom line. Congratulations to the diverse group of businesses recognized today for leading the way within their industries and demonstrating that Westchester is the place to run a successful sustainable company.”

First launched in 2009 in partnership with Westchester County, this public-private partnership between Westchester County and The Business Council of Westchester helps Westchester-based organizations become environmentally sustainable while simultaneously improving operational performance and saving money. To date, over 300 local businesses have joined Westchester Green Business-Certified, which expanded in 2014 to include a new pathway for participants to achieve certification. In addition to the awards, 14 organizations that have achieved certification (see list below) were recognized at the ceremony. “It has been enormously satisfying to see this program expand in Westchester County and become a regional, statewide and even national model for others to follow,” BCW President and CEO Marsha Gordon said. “Employers from all industries are realizing that sustainability is an essential ingredient to their long-term success and ability to retain the most talented workforce.” The highly prestigious Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award was presented this year to Arc Westchester, the largest agency in the county serving children, teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Headquartered in Hawthorne NY, Arc Westchester has more than 800 employees throughout the county and over 53,000 square footage of office space. They embody the spirit of the Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award by incorporating sustainability into all aspects of their business and demonstrating visionary leadership. The award was established three years ago in memory of the founder and owner of C.W. Brown, the Armonk-based firm that became the first existing facility in Westchester to receive LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
