Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later.

You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself.

You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig.

L to R: Cherish Thomas; Neil Klar, Board member of Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley NY; Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas. Larry Fair, who once called The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School home, said, “All I can say is that I feel very honored and humbled that Wartburg, who has set the foundation in which I build my life on, is honoring me. I am thankful for this honor and for their continued support of me and The Future Society Inc.'s vision.” The Future Society, Inc. is a local non-profit, providing mentoring activities for disadvantaged inner city youth and support mechanisms for parents. During his remarks at the event, Mr. Fair attributes the life lessons and upbringing while at The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, particularly the guidance received by his housemother, Ms. Alfrieda Gross, as the reason for his life’s work with children.

The Alzheimer's Association Hudson Valley NY Chapter is a dedicated community partner supporting research initiatives and providing assistance to those affected by the disease. Wartburg has a long-standing partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association including offering educational seminars and collaborating on community arts-based programming for older adults living with memory impairment. Understanding the benefits of stimulation for this patient population, Wartburg and the Alzheimer’s Association announced their collaboration, funded in part by a grant from NYS Department of Health, on a choir program for those in the community living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and their caregivers. Saint Peter’s Church, located in midtown Manhattan, is a spiritual care provider to the New York City community and longtime supporter of Wartburg’s mission. St. Peter’s has long partnered with Wartburg from its inception as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School in 1866 through today as a spiritual care provider to older adults. Dominic Carter, nationally recognized, RNN/FIOS 1 News reporter, was the Master of Ceremonies at this year’s gala. “Wartburg does outstanding work for the community and really is the Harvard University when it comes to taking care of our elders with dignity.” said continued on next page Mr. Carter.

Do you ever have difficulty hearing or understanding speech in restaurants? At parties or family gatherings? Do you feel that people are mumbling all the time? Is the volume on your television creeping up? Is telephone conversation sometimes difficult to understand? If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a strong possibility that you may have some degree of hearing loss. It has been shown that if a hearing loss is present, a person has to struggle to hear speech. Undue stress is put on that individual. This stress can have a negative effect on a persons quality of life. It can cause that person to avoid many social situations. This, in turn, can cause that person to become more isolated. Lost in the woods about home care for your loved ones? PAGE 12

September, 2016

Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

By Olga Berde Mahl, P.C.

This meant a great deal to me for my Mom and Aunt. How to provide compassionate and competent home care for my aging Mother and Aunt began to take over more and more of my life and time. In this trying time, I wanted and needed was a way to provide them with home care (I promised I would never put them in a nursing or old age home and they would stay in the home till the end). After searching I found a way to do IT! They did, Stay in the home that they loved until the end… with compassionate caring attendants, we selected and with all the nursing care they needed. The other challenge was to do all this while protecting their hard earned assets of a home, and savings, and other assets from retirement and pensions earned over a lifetime of work and protect those savings from government claw backs.

And we didn’t have five years to wait it out. No, the need was then not down the road. I found a good solid legal way out for us and I can help you do the same for your family. In the end, they had compassionate care with people we chose, who were paid a salary, who got vacation pay, health insurance and other benefits, all paid for by Uncle Sam. And there was no five years “lookback”, as with certified nursing homes, only thirty (30) days from setting up the plan for qualified home care. As a lawyer dealing in Elder Law and Trusts and Estates, let me help you to find the way out of your woods for your elders and your family. 5 tips to take the stress out of a hearing screening Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

September, 2016

PAGE 13

You’ve started to notice that your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, and maybe your friends or family have told you as well. It may be time for a hearing screening–the best way to determine what may be causing your hearing loss. But, what if getting screened for a hearing loss makes you feel anxious? Here are 5 tips to take the stress out of your hearing screening:

Find the right hearing care professional. Professionals who provide hearing health care and sell hearing aids are generally called “hearing care professionals” or “hearing aid dispensers.” They may be either audiologists or hearing aid specialists. Get referrals from your health care provider. Bring a buddy. Taking a family member, such as your spouse, or a close friend with you is helpful in more ways than one. It’s great to have someone you know with you for emotional and moral support, to help you remember information the provider may share, to help calm you down if you’re feeling anxious and for the familiar voice during your screening.

Be prepared. Ask your hearing care professional what to expect at your hearing screening. It will help ease the anxiety you have about the experience.

Take the next step. If you have a hearing loss your hearing care professional can suggest hearing aids for you that are suitable for your kind of hearing loss, your lifestyle and your budget.

There’s no better time than now. Most adults haven’t had their hearing tested since grade school. Delaying may increase the feeling of stress about doing something, and it may also make it more difficult to treat your hearing loss if you in fact have one. If this sounds like you, make an appointment today. source:www.yourhearing.com

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones?

Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid.

Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will?

If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate.

Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do?

So, you have hearing loss. Now what? Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

September, 2016

First, rest assured: you’re not alone. In fact, nearly 38 million Americans have hearing loss. For many people, hearing aids are the best option for correcting hearing loss and resuming a high quality of life. Today’s hearing aids are tiny technological marvels, and many options are available to suit every preference, budget, hearing loss and lifestyle. Modern hearing aid technology advances quickly with new innovations from major manufacturers each year. Most manufacturers group their products into categories based on features and capabilities, similar to how an automobile maker might categorize its vehicles. Nearly all modern hearing aids are digital and require professional fitting and programming by a hearing care practitioner. These hearing aids offer far greater flexibility than previous hearing aid generations because the programmer can set them to amplify precisely the frequencies needed for each individual. As the level of technology increases from basic to advanced, hearing aid features become more automatic and more dynamic to adjust quickly to any listening situation. Some hearing aids today even have user-centered features like voice prompts for low battery and program changes.

PAGE 15

Many of the hearing aids produced today use wireless technology. This allows two hearing aids to operate together as one complete system, instead of acting as two independent devices. This action mimics the way two properly functioning ears work with the brain to process sound. Additionally, wireless technology gives hearing aid wearers a greater ability to customize their experience and program their devices. Wireless hearing aids are often capable of connecting with external devices as well, such as MP3 players, TVs, computers and mobile phones equipped with Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth enables hearing aid wearers to connect personal electronic devices and stream signals directly to their hearing aids. Today’s hearing aids do more than just help you hear better. They are sophisticated consumer electronics devices that boast amazing technology. Some hearing aids can even connect to technology that can help automate things around your home like your home’s security system, lighting, television and even your coffee maker! Your hearing care provider will find the right solution for you. source:www.healthyhearing.com

Getting older and moments that matter PAGE 16

September, 2016

Getting older can be enjoyable and relaxing. You may find yourself with more time to simply enjoy life. Whether it is a family celebration, a long awaited trip overseas or just dinner with friends, these are the moments that can truly matter to you. But getting older has its share of challenges, too. For instance, as you get older, even if you feel healthy, you are at greater risk for certain medical conditions. One condition you have a greater chance of developing as you get older is shingles, the common name for herpes zoster – a painful, red, blistering rash, that can last up to 30 days. Unfortunately, if you’ve ever had chickenpox – and 98 percent of U.S. adults have – you’re at risk for shingles, because the virus that causes chickenpox never leaves the body. As you age, your risk for shingles increases due to the normal age-related decline in the immune system that makes it easier for the shingles virus to break through the body’s defenses. “People with shingles have described the pain as stabbing, shooting, burning, throbbing and

itchy,” says Dr. Adriana Perez, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, assistant professor and Southwest Borderlands scholar at Arizona State University and co-director at the Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. “The first symptoms of shingles are often felt, but may not be seen, and may initially include itching, tingling or burning in a specific area on one side of the face or body. Soon after, a rash of blisters appear and sharp pain emerges on the same part of the skin where the initial symptoms were felt.” Shingles most commonly appears on a single side of the torso, but it can appear anywhere on the body – even the face. For most people, after the shingles rash heals, the pain and itch subside, and the blisters heal, but in some cases, even after the rash heals, there can be permanent scarring.

The CDC estimates there are approximately 1 million cases of shingles each year and that one in three people will get shingles during their lifetime. In some cases, shingles can cause complications like postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is long-term nerve pain that can last for months, even years after the blisters heal and the rash disappears. “There’s no way to predict if or when someone will get shingles, or how severe the case could be, so speaking with a health care professional to understand your personal risk is important,” says Dr. Perez. When you’re not busy enjoying the moments that matter to you, you can learn more by talking with your doctor or pharmacist about shingles and by visiting ShinglesInfo.com.

'Keep Connected' is theme for National Assisted Living Week

“Keep Connected” will be the theme for this year's National Assisted Living Week, which will be Sept. 11 to 17, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. The annual, national observance provides an opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers and surrounding communities to celebrate the individuals served in assisted living and learn more about this sector of the long-term care profession. “‘Keep Connected' recognizes the expanding and exciting opportunities technology offers to residents and staff alike in our nation's assisted living communities,” said NCAL Executive Director Scott Tittle. “With this year's theme, we hope to help overcome the mistaken belief that seniors are not interested in or able to learn about the latest modern advancements. At the same time, we want to recognize the many revolutionary ways staff are enhancing care through new innovative tools and broadening their connections with the larger community.” National Assisted Living Week was established by NCAL in 1995. source:www.mcknightsseniorliving.com

Healthy Aging Month tips: Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

September, 2016

6 healthy lifestyle ideas

Healthy Aging® Month is an annual observance month designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. The mission of Healthy Aging® Month is to encourage local level Healthy Aging® events that promote taking personal responsibility for one’s health… be it physically, socially, mentally or financially. Take cat naps It’s proven that naps are not just good for toddlers but for people of all ages. A study revealed people who take naps are 37% less likely to die from heart disease.

Mix & mingle with the right crowd There is clear link between having the right social ties and living a longer life. Surround yourself around positive people who help lift you up and encourage you to follow your dreams. Continue your old hobbies and find new activities that you can do with your friends or alone.

Exercise regularly. It is recommended to get least 2.5 hours of exercise a week. Not everyone likes the gym but how about a nice nature walk or dancing?

Set realistic goals Make a plan to clearly define where you are going and how you will get there. Research has shown those who have a clear sense of purpose and drive have a less chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Create a budget. Know where your money is going. Try to cut down your expenses. Not being able to afford the things you want to do in life can add stress your life. Look at ways you can lower regular bills and allocate it to other things like traveling, hobbies or sports. Source: Mansion Senior Living

Eat foods that give you natural energy If you add the right foods at the right times together it will give you more energy. One example is one fruit or veggie, a whole grain, a lean protein, a plant-based fat food (avocado, nuts, coconut oil) and top it off with a fresh herb or spice.

When a loved one has Alzheimer’s Disease Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

September, 2016

PAGE 25

Assisted-Living Facilities There may come a day when your loved one can no longer be cared for at home. If she doesn’t need 24-hour nursing care, an assisted-living facility may be good choice. They provide housing, meals, and activities, but are much less expensive than nursing homes. Look for one with an Alzheimer’s special care unit that can give 24-hour supervision and personal care to meet the needs of people with dementia.

Could It Be Alzheimer's? It’s normal for people to become a bit forgetful as they age. So how can you tell a harmless "senior moment" from Alzheimer's disease? One in eight people 65 and older have this devastating form of dementia. In its first stages, Alzheimer’s may not be obvious to friends and family. But there are some early warning signs to watch for.

Memory and Speech In early Alzheimer’s, long-term memories usually remain intact while short-term memories become sketchy. Your loved one may forget conversations you had. She may repeat questions that were already answered. The disease also disrupts speech, so she might struggle to remember common words.

Behavior In addition to memory loss, Alzheimer’s can cause confusion and behavior changes. Your loved one may get lost in familiar places. Mood swings and lapses in judgment are also common, as is poor hygiene. People who were once stylish may start wearing stained clothes and forget to wash their hair.

How Is It Diagnosed? There’s no simple test for Alzheimer’s, so the doctor will rely on you to describe the changes in your loved one. A mental status test, sometimes called a “mini-cog,” or other screening tests can measure his mental skills and short-term memory. Neurological exams and brain scans may be used to rule out other problems, like a stroke or tumor.

How Is It Treated? There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s and no way to slow the nerve damage it causes in the brain. But there are medications that appear to help maintain mental skills and slow the disease’s effects. If your loved one gets treatment early on, she may be able to stay independent and do her daily tasks for a longer period of time.

Home Health Care Many people want to stay in their own homes as long as possible. That’s not easy if they have trouble getting dressed or using the bathroom on their own. A home health aide can help with personal hygiene and other daily tasks. You can also check with your local Area Agency on Aging for information on services that deliver meals or provide transportation to the elderly. source:www.webmd.com
