Wartburg hosted its historic Fall Festival on Saturday, September 24th from 11 am to 5 pm on Wartburg’s Mt. Vernon campus at One Wartburg Place. This is the third year of the Festival, which was held annually for decades up until the early 2000s and has recently been revived. With a robust intergenerational schedule that included live entertainment, a children’s area – Sponsored by The Future Society, Inc. – with a bouncy castle, an assortment of food trucks and a Farmer’s Market sponsored by Morrison Community Living, and an art exhibition, attendees spent the entire day entertained and engaged as they support one of Westchester’s most special resources. There were also raffles, interactive activities, and an information table to learn more about Wartburg’s history and unique services. To celebrate Wartburg’s beginnings in 1866 as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, there was also a reunion for those who once called the farm school home. This event was free and open to the public.

Client Testimonials

I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later.

You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself.

You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig.

Thanksgiving is not just a placeholder between Halloween and Christmas: It is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Take a look around. You have so much to be thankful for. You have a great life, a wonderful family and close friends. It might seem hard to believe, Thanksgiving Day is almost here. Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday, but giving thanks is universal. Be grateful for everything you have. Thanksgiving traces its origins to ancient harvest festivals. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. Since then, we have been giving thanks on Thanksgiving. The staff at Boomers & Beyond would like to take this opportunity to wish our readers a Happy Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for, including the support of our readers. Lost in the woods about home care for your loved ones? PAGE 12

Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

By Olga Berde Mahl, P.C.

This meant a great deal to me for my Mom and Aunt. How to provide compassionate and competent home care for my aging Mother and Aunt began to take over more and more of my life and time. In this trying time, I wanted and needed was a way to provide them with home care (I promised I would never put them in a nursing or old age home and they would stay in the home till the end). After searching I found a way to do IT! They did, Stay in the home that they loved until the end… with compassionate caring attendants, we selected and with all the nursing care they needed. The other challenge was to do all this while protecting their hard earned assets of a home, and savings, and other assets from retirement and pensions earned over a lifetime of work and protect those savings from government claw backs.

And we didn’t have five years to wait it out. No, the need was then not down the road. I found a good solid legal way out for us and I can help you do the same for your family. In the end, they had compassionate care with people we chose, who were paid a salary, who got vacation pay, health insurance and other benefits, all paid for by Uncle Sam. And there was no five years “lookback”, as with certified nursing homes, only thirty (30) days from setting up the plan for qualified home care. As a lawyer dealing in Elder Law and Trusts and Estates, let me help you to find the way out of your woods for your elders and your family. NY State Licensed and Certified Audiologist & Hearing Aid Dispenser

Do you ever have difficulty understanding speech at restaurants or family gatherings? Do you feel that people are mumbling all the time? Are you constantly turning up the volume on your television? Are telephone conversations sometimes difficult to understand? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it is possible that you may have some degree of hearing loss. When people experience hearing loss, they often struggle to hear and understand speech. This can cause a lot of stress and have a negative effect on a person’s quality of life. When a person has difficulty communicating, it can cause them to avoid social situations and become more isolated. Over the past 15 years, Westchester Audiology and Hearing Aid Specialist, P.C. has been helping people communicate

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones?

Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid.

Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will?

If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate.

Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do?

November is Home Care and Hospice Month PAGE 18

November, 2016

During November the home care and hospice community honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in our health care system and in homes across the nation. To recognize their efforts, we call upon all Americans to commemorate the power of caring, both at the home and in their local communities and join with the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) by celebrating November as Home Care and Hospice Month. NAHC honors National Home Care and Hospice Month with the theme Home Care and Hospice Deliver Freedom, in the coming weeks NAHC is releasing new studies showing the increasing role of home care and hospice in health care. Whether it is dollars spent or miles driven, the value of home care and hospice is imeasurable. Home Care Aide Week takes place this year on November 13-19. For over 15 years, NAHC has used the second full week in November to highlight the many aides whose contributions are second to none as they bring personal

Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

warmth to the daily work of giving personal care. They play an invaluable role for their patients as caregivers, companions, and friends. November is the perfect time to connect with your elected officials. Scheduling a meeting with your elected officials is one of the best ways to be a home health advocate, while also building positive relationships with your lawmakers. Face-to-face meetings give you the opportunity to ask lawmakers to support home care and hospice in person, and from the perspective of the community that they represent. It is particularly important that we communicate NAHC’s priority issues. “It is highly appropriate in November that we celebrate the nurses, therapists, aides, and other providers who choose to use their lives to serve our country’s aged, disabled, and dying,” said Val J. Halamandaris, NAHC President. “No work is nobler, and no group is more deserving of our respect and admiration. Their goal is helping society’s weakest members live the fullest lives they can. By marrying high tech with high touch, home care professionals and volunteers allow patients to get care at home where they can be with the ones they love,” said Halamandaris.

November is Bladder Health Month

The bladder is an amazing organ with a very special design. November is recognized as National Bladder Health Month and expert urologists at The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC) have put together a list of bladder health facts all Coloradans should be aware of. Certain diseases or changes in the body can impact the storage capacity and function of the bladder. For example, the lower urinary tract

consists of the bladder and the urethra. Symptoms associated with lower urinary tract conditions are referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These symptoms include urinary frequency, urgency, hesitancy, dysuria, slow stream and nocturia. More than 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year, making it the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the country.

November, 2016

Smoking is the leading cause of bladder cancer. Smokers are twice as likely to be diagnosed with bladder cancer as those who have never picked up a cigarette. While more men are diagnosed with bladder cancer than women, the rate of incidence among women is increasing. Women also tend to present with more advanced bladder cancer tumors when diagnosed. There have been many treatment advances for bladder cancer in recent years. A cystectomy, the surgical removal of the bladder, is one treatment option for bladder cancer patients. In 2010, surgeons at TUCC performed the first robotic cystectomy in Denver. Other treatment options for bladder cancer may include radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other scope-based surgical procedures. Urinary frequency and urgency, with or without incontinence, also known as overactive bladder and urge incontinence, is the most common bladder condition afflicting women. This condition is often caused by bladder muscle spasms,

which result in an urgent need to go to the bathroom and may be followed by an involuntary loss of urine. There are many effective treatment options available for overactive bladder from lifestyle changes (fluid management) and muscle training to medications or surgery. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic bladder condition caused by damage to the protective lining of the bladder. Patients experience symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency or pain in the areas between the navel and the inside of the thighs that can be mild or severe and occasional or constant. Approximately 90 percent of patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis are women. Westchester Medical Center Trauma Expert advises The Bristal Seniors on how to prevent falls Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

In an effort to keep older adults healthy and living longer, The Westchester Medical Center Health Network is educating seniors during National Fall Prevention Month on how to help prevent these accidents. On September 13, Mary McCarthy, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator at Westchester Medical Center, led a program at The Bristal Assisted Living at Armonk to show older adults how to prevent injury by improving coordination and balance.McCarthy also gave The Bristal residents practical advice on how to avoid injury. “I’m here today to keep you out of the hospital,” McCarthy told the group of more than 30 residents and staff from The Bristal who attended the hour-long program. One in three adults age 65 and older sustain injuries - some of them fatal - as the result of a fall. About 25 percent of hospital admissions and 40 percent of nursing home admissions are due to falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Kathy Aronow, RN, MSN, Adult Trauma Program Manager for the Westchester Medical Center Health Network who also attended the presentation at The Bristal, said that the ini-

tiative was part of a comprehensive balance-training and fall-prevention program presented by WMCHealth. By providing fall and risk assessments, WMCHealth helps older adults recognize the medical, behavioral and environmental factors - such as medications, vision, hearing, balance, diet, exercise and home environment that increase the likelihood of falling. “I hear from older adults all the time that they expect to fall because they are old,’’ said McCarthy. “Our seniors need to better understand that falls are not a natural part of aging, they are predictable and preventable.’’ McCarthy and Aronow said fall and risk assessments are being conducted at facilities throughout the WMC Health Network and are being offered in the community. WMCHealth partnered with the YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester earlier this year to launch a comprehensive balance and training program. Samantha Krieger, Executive Director of The Bristal at Armonk, said that the program brought some valuable information to residents on how to stay healthy and active. “Programs like these not only help older adults live

longer, but improve the quality of lives, which is what we strive for at The Bristal, ’’ she said. “We appreciate WMCHealth Network’s outreach to our residents.’’ The Bristal residents attending the program were provided with packets containing information on how to prevent falls,

medication review, home safety checklist, tips for overcoming fear of falling, exercises to help build better balance to reduce falls and useful techniques if you fall. For more information about The Bristal at Armonk, call 914-4328200 or visit www.thebristal.com.

Afterwards, he stayed with me and calmed me down while my tire was being repaired. We found each other very easy to talk to and were surprised to learn we had so much in common… We were both lonely and gradually discovered new purpose together.
