Client Testimonials

I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later.

You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself.

You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services. – Tom C.

Passavant Society Members attend annual luncheon to recognize those who have remembered Wartburg in their estate plans.

Wartburg held its 25th annual Passavant Society luncheon recently to honor Wartburg Founder Rev. Dr. William Alfred Passavant’s rich legacy by recognizing individuals who have named Wartburg as a beneficiary in their estate plans. This annual luncheon is a celebration of love and gratitude to these generous donors and recognition of today’s benevolent members. Wartburg Board Member, Rev. Eric O. Olsen, served as Master of Ceremonies for the wonderful event, where the newly inducted Passavant Society members received their elegant Passavant medals as well as a pin to wear in recognition of their benevolence. Recipients included Rev. Amandus J. Derr and Mrs. Carole Derr. Rev. Derr is Chair of the Wartburg Home Board of Directors and is a longtime partner to Wartburg and Robert and Jacqueline Welser. Mr. Welser is Wartburg’s Chief Information Officer since 2008 and is instrumental in maintaining Wartburg’s technical infrastructure. “We have been blessed and are on the lookout for worthwhile opportunities to share those blessings with others. Wartburg is such an opportunity. Wartburg does great work for the people it serves. We can't think of a better way to recognize the dedication and hard work that takes place every day,” said Robert and Jacqueline Welser.

Mr. Welser accepts his Passavant medal as part of his induction into Wartburg’s Passavant Society. (L to R) David Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO, Robert Welser, Wartburg CIO, Rev. Eric Olsen, ViceChair of Wartburg Home Board of Directors.

David J. Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO, said, “It is a joy and an honor to welcome Rev. and Mrs. Derr and Mr. and Mrs. Welser to our Passavant Society. It is in part because of the exemplary benevolence of individuals like these individuals that Wartburg is able to provide premier care and services to those entrusted to our care. They are an inspiration to us all and help ensure every step forward.” Wartburg has a long history of caring, first for children when opened as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School over 150 years ago as well as seniors who began to live at Wartburg at the turn of the century. At the event, Mr. Gentner posthumously recognized Passavant Members who have passed in the last year, including Elizabeth Barlage. The afternoon’s program included an update of new programs and services including an Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, a $1M renovation at their assisted living facility and a new program for the visually impaired in their Adult Day Care program. In addition, Paula Ress, Vice President and Nursing Home Administrator, spoke about the success of Wartburg’s sub-acute rehabilitation program which continues to get patients home faster and healthier with lower lengths of stay and rehospitalization rates and more individuals returning home compared to regional providers. Wartburg’s Skilled Nursing Facility was also named one of the “Best Nursing Homes in New York State” by U.S. News & World Report in 2017, for the seventh consecutive year and received a 5 Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid based on heath inspections, staff and quality measures. Special guest speakers included, Mr. Ulrich J. Rosa, a member of the Wartburg Foundation Board of Directors and recent patient in their rehabilitation center following a total knee replacement. Mr. Rosa affirmed what Ms. Ress said and spoke of the innovative rehabilitative care that he received that enabled him to be back on the golf course much sooner than he anticipated. Rev. Dolores McKay, who recently retired from Wartburg’s spiritual care team in 2016 and a Passavant member, spoke about why she feels it is important to support Wartburg through estate gifts to ensure they continue to provide quality care for generations to come. By Nancy Sorbella

GENERAL MANAGER It’s hard to believe that fall is around the corner! The change of seasons is the perfect time to plan ahead for the colder months and schedule your health and wellness appointments with your doctor and more. At Boomers & Beyond we think in terms of “P’s”; prevention and preparedness. One cannot go wrong considering both when thinking of health and wellness. Much like changing the batteries on your smoke detector when the time changes, scheduling visits to healthcare providers and addressing any upcoming changes to your lifestyle is ideal when the weather starts to change. Get your flu shot before everyone else, join a new fitness class, research changes to Medicare and Medicaid, schedule visits to new residential communities that you’ve been interested in; be engaged and be prepared. Less time outdoors can mean more time pursuing activities that provide food and fitness for the mind; look at our Book List and visit your local library or order a new book online, go to the theatre, attend a concert, reach out to friends new and old and connect regularly with family. Fall is also a great time to volunteer, find a new hobby or audit a class. Whatever your passion, pursue it to the best of your ability and then share your experiences with us! We love to hear from you and hope to share your stories with our readers. Boomers & Beyond is a community, and we welcome and appreciate you all. Senior Citizens Day August 21st

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor:

On behalf of all those served by Waveny LifeCare Network, I would like to thank the New Canaan Artisans for awarding us a grant in support of computer technology at The Inn. The Inn is an important part of the Waveny LifeCare Network continuum and is New Canaan’s distinctive senior residence with private apartments with on-site staff who provide a warm and caring environment. This grant will allow us to purchase a desktop computer and printer station for use by all Inn residents and their family members. We are grateful for the Artisan’s belief in Waveny’s mission, and for their support of our efforts to provide a rich and fulfilling lifestyle to all whom we serve. Their grants are funded by proceeds of their sales of handcrafted items, and I encourage residents to visit them at their next sale at the New Canaan Farmer’s Market in early September. Most sincerely,

William C. Piper Chief Executive Officer

Ribbon cutting opens therapeutic patio at Waveny

Together, Bill Piper, CEO of Waveny LifeCare Network and Gerry Roberts, President of Waveny Care Center’s Resident Council, cut the ribbon to formally open Waveny’s newly redesigned and renovated back patio.

August, 2017

On Tuesday, June 27, Waveny LifeCare Network’s Chief Executive Officer, Bill Piper, and Resident Council President, Gerry Roberts, joined forces in a ribbon cutting ceremony to formally open Waveny Care Center’s newly renovated back patio and garden. Beyond being a beautiful and tranquil destination for Waveny’s residents, the new patio is a therapeutic area designed to actively assist in both physical and occupational therapy for Waveny’s short-term and outpatient rehab patients. The garden offers looped pathways made of three different surfaces and textures, areas containing steps of varying heights to assist with reorientation to stair climbing, a ramp platform with side railings, and mailboxes of differing heights to help patients regain independence with basic but important activities of daily living. The area’s centerpiece is a colorful compass that signals true north, east, west and south. “This gift from Waveny is what compassion looks like,” said Gerry

Roberts, President of Waveny Care Center’s Resident Council. “It’s a unifying symbol of the entire Waveny community coming together and reaching out to each other. This garden helps us to find inner peace and to talk with nature.” Waveny LifeCare Network provides a comprehensive continuum of healthcare to serve the changing needs of older adults from all areas. Waveny is a nonprofit organization that offers independent living at The Inn, assisted living and short-term respite care for people with memory impairment at The Village, and skilled nursing, inpatient and outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Waveny Care Center. It also includes the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, an Adult Day Program that provides free door-to-door transportation throughout most of lower Fairfield County, and an array of communitybased services through Waveny Home Healthcare, Waveny at Home and Geriatric Care Management. 4 Myths

seniors hear about exercise

August, 2017

PAGE 13

As you flex and stretch, regular exercise will reverse any natural breakdown of muscles accompanied by old age. Just make sure to start with a simple exercise routine and then moderately increase the difficulty level as you get stronger.

SENIORS ARE TOO FRAIL FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY This is another misconception on exercise and the limitations of seniors. An active senior lifestyle will help your bones stay strong! For seniors with osteoporosis, you can increase bone strength with regular exercise. No need to become a professional body builder. Even light activity can help your bones stay strong. Soaking up some sun (vitamin D) and consuming more calcium rich foods are also good for bone health. Schedule daily exercise time and invite a friend or neighbor to join you. Older adults should try a variety of exercises to prevent boredom. If you’re a senior starting a new exercise regimen, Alert1 can protect you in the instance of the unthinkable. A senior medical alert system with fall detection can protect you in the instance you’re harmed while exercising. When exercising, do not overexert yourself and of course, always consult a medical professional before you engage in more strenuous activity than you are accustomed to. Alert1 recommends that seniors get active as exercise is a great way to decrease risks of developing medical problems. But still fewer people over the age of 65 consider exercise an option in their daily lives. Maintaining consistent exercise in our golden years is critical to combating bone-loss, frailty, arthritis, obesity and many other ailments that go along with aging. Even if you haven’t exercised consistently, it is never too late to start.

Myth 4:

Source:www.alert-1.com/blog/general/4-mythson-exercise-for-seniors-/1741Shayne Fitz-Coy

EXERCISING WON'T BENEFIT SENIORS Deterioration of vital body systems is attributed to a lack of physical activity accompanied by aging. Exercise—whether it be lifting small weights or taking brisk walks—will help you feel younger and stronger. It pumps up the production of endorphins which makes us feel good. These chemicals not only combat depression, they also make us feel and look young. Exercise is also shown to increase your self-esteem. Consistent exercise over time can lower the risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and high blood pressure.

Myth 1:

SENIORS SHOULD LIMIT STRENUOUS MOVEMENT As the saying goes, “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” Inactivity, whether it be mental or physical, can affect us negatively at any age. When we exercise, we stimulate ourselves both mentally and physically. Think of it as proper up-keep and maintenance. If we don’t maintain ourselves, we start to lose the ability to do the things we love, and eventually, we lose the ability to do even the simplest of things, and finally we lose our independence entirely. That being said, you should still consult your physician and exercise with caution by listening to your body. Don’t over do it! Over exercising can affect your body adversely as well.

Myth 2:

SENIORS MIGHT FALL WHILE EXERCISING Actually, it’s the other way around: By exercising regularly you will increase your muscle strength and balance. Find an acitivty that lets you practice balancing and reacting to things around you; Alert1 recommends Tai Chi for seniors. With increased balance and overall body strength you decrease your risk of falling—not only during exercise, but any time you move around.

Myth 3:

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones?

Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid.

Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will?

If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate.

Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do?

Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. practices in all aspects of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions.

Monthly Tips for Seniors

Travel Tips

Select an Aisle Seat When the flight is long, you don’t want to have to negotiate with your seatmates when you need to stretch, use the restroom, or ask the attendant a question.

Keep Medicines Handy Travelers should always have their important medications in their carry-on and keep them handy, in their seat (to avoid having to get up and dig in your bag in the overhead bin). Print and Share Your Travel Documents Make a backup copy of your itinerary and send it to those you are visiting – so they know when your plane is arriving and can make arrangements if it is delayed – and leave a copy with a friend or family member back home.

AARP Travel makes it really easy to plan and book your trips. Plus, AARP members have access to savings on hotels, car rentals, cruises, tours and airfare. Our destination guides have the information you need to make your dream trip a reality – with detailed information on lots of great locations from Geneva to the Grand Canyon. Visit http://travel.aarp.org for more information or contact a Liberty Travel agent near you.

Stand Up and Stretch Often One of the most critical risks for senior travelers is DVT or deep vein thrombosis – it can cause death during and after a long flight simply because a person did not move about or stretch often. Get Help with Your Luggage If you reach for your bag on a fast-moving carousel and fall, you could be injured. Take it easy on yourself. Ask another passenger to grab your bag and if you don’t have family at the luggage point, get a porter to load your bags into the taxi or hotel van.

Get ready to love‌

Mondays

What are your expectations for retirement? What will you look forward to most? While many fantasize of lazy days, no schedules, and no bosses; that's often not the case. Many retirees are extremely busy and wonder how they ever had time for work?

Many retirees love Mondays because of the sheer joy they feel when everyone else they know has to go back to work. And you don't. No longer will you dread that the weekend is coming to an end. Weekdays now represent a whole new world. Many retirees join fitness programs, support groups, attend senior activities and trips and volunteer at local hospitals or meal services. Boomers & Beyond would love to hear from retirees who would like to share with our readers what they are involved in now that they have time. Please send your stories to: Cathy@healthcarenewsmagazine.com 1 Ardmore Street, New Windsor, NY 12553

6 whole-grain corn tortillas (6-inch diameter) 1 can (15 ounces) reduced-sodium black beans, rinsed and drained 1 teaspoon ground cumin 6 large eggs or 1 1/2 cups egg substitute 1/2 cup grated reduced-fat cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese blend 6 tablespoons purchased fresh salsa

Preparation Preheat oven to 350 F. Generously spray 6 (8-ounce) custard cups with cooking spray and place on a cookie sheet. Place tortillas in the microwave and heat for about 25 seconds or until they are warm and flexible. Gently press a tortilla into each cup. Spray the tops of the tortillas with cooking spray. Place beans in a small bowl and mash coarsely with a fork or potato masher. Add cumin and stir until combined. Spoon the bean mixture into tortillas, dividing evenly. Crack 1 egg into each tortilla on top of the beans. Place cookie sheet with egg cups in the oven and bake for about 24 to 27 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the yolks are soft. Sprinkle each egg with grated cheese and return to oven for an additional minute or until the cheese is melted. Remove eggs from oven and run a table knife around the tortillas to loosen them from the custard cups. Then transfer to plates. Top with fresh salsa and serve immediately.
