Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those all-toocommon, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix Internist, New York, NY the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.” “I had been experiencing lower back pain for at least 6-7 months before I had visited Dr. Donath's office. Prior to this, I had tried doing stretches at home, taking some medications, acupuncture, but despite this, things did not improve. In fact, symptoms only progressed and became unbearable. It was so difficult to get out of bed in the morning, work my 12 hour shifts as a physician in Urgent Care and do my daily work outs, which I enjoyed so much. My colleague at work, who is also a physician and patient of Dr. Donath, recommended I see him and I was so glad I did. On my first visit, he patiently listened to my story and examined me carefully. He took his time to discuss possible diagnoses, sent me for an MRI that day, and saw me the next day to discuss results, and potential treatment plan. I listened to his advice and began spinal decompression, which was the best decision I have ever made. After a few visits, my pain started to subside and shortly I became pain-free. Dr. Donath and his staff are knowledgeable and very professional. I am so grateful to them for getting me back to my normal life. I highly recommend him to anyone who is having back pain.” Dr. Dawn Garcen, MD Family Medicine/Urgent Care, White Plains, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Eugene Dinkevich, MD Division Chief of General Pediatrics—SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY

“I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist, New York, NY

“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY

Transit Oriented Developments focus of brokers tour of downtown Yonkers PAGE 4

August, 2016

Transit Oriented Development, which is one of the hottest trends in real estate, was the focus of an exclusive brokers tour of residential projects under construction near Metro-North train stations in downtown Yonkers. More than 30 commercial and residential brokers were on hand for the June 16th tour conducted by the City’s Department of Planning & Development. Projects on the tour included River Tides at Greystone, Hudson Park Club and UNO Micro Unit Apartments. River Tides at Greystone is a 330-unit, 10story luxury rental complex overlooking the Hudson River. The project, which is being developed by Ginsburg Development Companies, will have a direct walkway to the Greystone Metro-North station. UNO Micro Unit Apartments is a $15 million development project transforming Building 2 at iPark into 100 micro-unit apartments. Developed by National Resources, the project is a short walk to the Yonkers Metro-North train station. Executives from Ginsburg Development, Collins Enterprises and National Resources made presentations at each of the projects on the tour. Following the tour, Mayor Mike Spano welcomed the brokers at a cocktail reception held at the Boyce Thompson Center, an 85,000square-foot, mixed-use center featuring Class A office/medical space, retail stores, banking and restaurants. The center, which is being developed by Simone Development Companies, is a creative restoration of the historic Boyce Thompson Institute.

Attending the reception at the Boyce Thompson Center were, from left, Joseph Cotter, President, National Resources; Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano; Guy Leibler, President, Simone Healthcare Development, and Yonkers Commissioner of Planning and Development Wilson Kimball

“Transit Oriented Development is a fastgrowing trend in urban planning that is creating vibrant, livable and sustainable communities. Yonkers is on the cutting edge of this exciting new trend. We are very pleased to have shared with the brokerage community these important transit oriented developments that are bringing new energy to downtown Yonkers.” Mayor Spano

Sponsors for the event were Ginsburg Development Companies, Collins Enterprises, National Resources and Simone Development Companies. This is the second consecutive year that the City of Yonkers has conducted broker tours of real estate developments in the city. Last year, commercial brokers toured office and loft space in the former Otis Elevator complex and the Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District.

Lake Mohegan Fire Department and Yorktown Police Department win the Chief’s Challenge for Fitness The Lake Mohegan Fire Department and the Yorktown Police Department were each awarded $1,000 checks as the winners of the 2015 Chief’s Challenge. Designed by cardiologists at Phelps Hospital, the program seeks to improve the health and fitness of active police and fire personnel by encouraging them to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle. Working in collaboration with Club Fit in Briarcliff and Jefferson Valley, the Chief’s Challenge was established and is funded by the Heart and Health Education Foundation, directed by Franklin Zimmerman, MD, Arthur Fass, MD, and Dina Katz, MD, all members of the Phelps Medical Associates cardiology practice in Briarcliff Manor. In all, there were 240 participants from 20 police departments and 24 fire departments throughout Westchester, Putnam and New York City. The two winning departments tallied up the highest levels of participation by their members. The program was inspired by research conducted by Dr. Zimmerman, senior attending cardiologist at Phelps. Dr. Zimmerman is a nationally recognized researcher in the field of the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease in public safety personnel. His findings were included in the book Dying For The Job, edited by former New York State Trooper, John Violante, Ph.D.

“My research shows that law enforcement personnel have a high risk of heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity and metabolic syndrome,” said Dr. Zimmerman. “In addition, there are occupation-specific risk factors unique to first responders, including shift work and psychological stress. Police officers, firefighters, and other public safety personnel need to be particularly vigilant in controlling cardiovascular risk factors, beginning with a regular exercise program such as the one offered at Club Fit.”

The 2016 Chief’s Challenge is under way, with high hopes for an even bigger turnout of public safety personnel this year. Club Fit offers a halfoff membership to active police and fire department personnel. For more information about the 2016 Chiefs’ Challenge, call Jodi Costino at Club Fit Jefferson Valley at 914-250-2721 or Joe DaRonco at Club Fit Briarcliff Manor at 914-250-2783.

Teaming up to cure cancer: Relay For Life of Yorktown

The second annual Relay For Life of Yorktown raised an incredible $160,000 and counting for the American Cancer Society! The event took place on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Jack Devito Memorial Field. With an estimated 110,280 new cases of cancer anticipated in New York this year, the American Cancer Society is fighting back and raising funds to support its lifesaving mission through Relay For Life with 18 planned Relay For Life events in Westchester, Rockland and in Putnam this season. “The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the lower Hudson Valley, the state and the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all,” said Patrice Lestrange Mack of the American Cancer Society. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have faced cancer themselves. Each new person that registers brings us one step closer to saving more lives.” Relay For Life is an event where teams and individuals “camp out” at a local school or park and take turns walking around a track or path. It is noncompetitive nor a road race.

Each team has at least one participant walking on the track at all times and participates in raising funds to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to finish the fight against cancer. The Relay For Life movement is the world’s

largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community, with four million participants in 6,000 events worldwide in 2015. For more information or to make a donation, please visit http://www.cancer.org.

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates

Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.

“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

TOP DOCTORS OF WESTCHESTER—DR. ALEX HILARIO, CLINIC DIRECTOR

If you're suffering from nerve problems in the arms and legs, you must read about a clinical study that showed

How 85% of Patients Eliminated Numbness, Tingling, or Sharp Pains

Numbness, tingling, and pain are extremely annoying problems.

It may come and go...interrupts your sleep...and even makes your arm or legs feel weak at times. Maybe you've even been to other doctors and they claim all the tests indicate you should feel fine.

If You Read Nothing Else, Read This:

More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs.

This painful condition interferes with your body's ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions.

Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy. Read the full facts on this page.

More Pills Are Not the Solution A common treatment for many nerve problems is the 'take some pills and wait and see' method.

While this may be necessary for temporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Some of the more common drugs given include pain pills, anti-seizure mediations, and antidepressants -- all of which have serious side effects.

The Likely Cause of Your Problem My name is Dr. Alex Hilario, clinic director at Chiropractic Rehabilitation Source. I've been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for more than 10 years.

Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone.

The good news is that chiropractic treatments have proven effective in helping to remove the pressure on the nerves.

By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away.

For example, numerous studies have proven chiropractic's effectiveness in helping nerve conditions.

Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. - Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008

With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” – JMPT 1998

“Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative. Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994

What these studies mean is that you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems.

Could This Be Your Solution? It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution.

For 14 days only, $30 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for!

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive:

TOP DOCTORS of Westchester

The Doctor that Medical Doctors go see for their own pain. By Dale McKnight Healthcare Correspondent

Back and neck pain can be debilitating, and Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS is out to change that. An expert in a variety of non-surgical pain treatments, he is clinic director of Joint Effort Chiropractic & Westchester Spinal Decompression Center in White Plains. “Many patients come to us after pain killers, physical therapy, and even epidural injections failed to alleviate their pain,” he says. “My goal is to treat back and neck pain and ultimately fix the underlying problem so that surgery is prevented whenever possible.” Dr. Donath treats herniated and/or bulging discs, pinched nerves, spasms, strains and sprains, as well as sciatica and other conditions. His patients come from across the region, and even from around the world, ranging from children to senior citizens to professional athletes. Many prominent medical doctors in Westchester, Fairfield county, and NY City refer patients to him, and many physicians themselves seek Dr. Donath out for their own treatment. Dr. Donath, who has been in private practice in White Plains for the past ten years, is renowned as a top expert in the field of NonSurgical Spinal Decompression Therapy.

This cutting-edge FDA-cleared treatment is effective for even the most severe cases of herniated discs, sciatica, degenerative disc disease and failed back surgery, Dr. Donath says. “It’s remarkably effective, and we help a very high percentage of patients get out of pain and stay out of pain even when all other treatments have failed,” he adds.

This past September, Dr. Donath’s book was published. “The Neck & Back Pain Solution: Everything You Need to Know About NonSurgical Spinal Decompression Therapy” (available on amazon.com) outlines the procedure and its benefits. Non-surgical spinal decompression can be utilized when a disc is herniated, bulging, or compressed; these conditions may pinch a nerve or even the spinal cord and cause numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, or any combination of the above symptoms. The technique involves a sophisticated machine that applies controlled and highly specific and gentle forces on the spine, which cause the bulge or herniation to retract off the nerve or spinal cord. continued on next page

Spinal decompression is performed as a patient lies comfortably on the treatment table. A special belt connected to a computer is attached just above a patient’s hips and below the level of the discs being treated. A second belt is attached above the affected level. (The setup is similar for the neck.) The computer-regulated device provides cycles of varying degrees of subtle pulling, followed by relaxation. Each cycle gradually and gently stretches the spine and then relaxes it, initiating a negative pressure inside the spinal disc.

Healthcare News - Westchester August, 2016

This negative pressure creates a suction, or a vacuum effect. It enables water, nutrients, and disc material to be sucked back toward the center of the disc and off the nerves, thus relieving pain and enhancing proper healing. “The procedure is extremely comfortable,” Dr. Donath says. “Most patients enjoy it, and many even fall asleep.” Dr. Donath also treats joint pain, arthritis, headaches, pain during pregnancy, sportsrelated injuries, chronic muscle tightness and other musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Donath is certified and specializes in Active Release Techniques (ART). ART is one of the most effective treatments available for

PAGE 17

treating soft tissue injuries. This hands-on, non-invasive method is designed to break up adhesions and scar tissue that typically result from repetitive stress, overuse, and trauma. Dr. Donath is also experienced and certified in Graston Technique, a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. Some conditions that are commonly improved by ART and Graston Technique include headaches/migraines, back and neck pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, TMJ pain as well most types of tendonitis. Dr. Donath also utilizes Cold Laser therapy, a treatment that employs wavelengths of light able to penetrate deep within tissue in order to help accelerate the healing process. Cold Laser therapy can stimulate all cell types including muscle, ligament, cartilage and nerves. In addition, Dr. Donath is highly-skilled in the Diversified Technique of manual joint manipulation. This technique is used to restore proper motion to an injured or “stuck” joint. It is a highly useful approach to restore proper joint function. Whether it’s attending the latest pain relieving technique seminars or reviewing the current literature, Dr. Donath strives to learn more about innovations in the field – in order to be the most qualified doctor for his patients. Medical doctors continue sending patients to Dr. Donath because he consistently gets their patients out of pain – even when other therapies have failed. Dr. Donath’s results are fast. He is experienced, trustworthy, and does not prolong treatment with unnecessary procedures. “It’s my mission to provide not only relief for my patients but to solve the underlying cause of their conditions,” he says. Dr. Donath graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, and was class valedictorian. Dr. Donath also has a Master’s degree in human nutrition. He is a frequent lecturer at Jacobi Medical Center in New York City and serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the School of Medicine at New York Medical College.

August: A great time to get vaccinated—Vaccines protect you all year round, but August is a great time to get vaccinated August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the lifespan, from infants to the elderly.

In August, as summer winds down, it’s a good time for you and your family to make sure everyone is up-to-date on vaccines before heading back to school and to plan ahead to receive the flu vaccine. Ask your health care provider about other routinely recommended vaccines you might need. For example, you should make sure that the whole family is up-to-date on their DTap/Tdap and MMRV boosters, each of which protects against several serious diseases: • DTap or Tdap: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough)

• MMR or MMRV: measle, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox)

Finally, HPV vaccines help prevent girls and boys from getting cancers later in life that are caused by HPV. If you have questions about the HPV vaccine, ask your healthcare provider for more information. Vaccines are the best defense we have against serious diseases, and it’s important to make sure that you’re up to date on all recommended vaccines. Talk with your healthcare provider about what vaccines you and your family need, and keep putting your healthiest foot forward! Find out more at www.vaccines.gov

Spine risks of obesity go beyond back pain

It's well known that extra pounds put extra strain on our spine, which can lead to chronic back pain and debilitating spine conditions detracting from our overall health. But back pain - as difficult as it is - is merely one of the spine risks of obesity, with excess pounds creating additional challenges during surgery and post-operative recovery, according to Kaixuan Liu, MD, PhD, founder and president of Atlantic Spine Center. Musculoskeletal pain - and specifically back pain - are highly common among the nearly onethird of Americans who are classified as obese, according to the American Obesity Association. “Every extra pound adds extra strain to the ligaments, joints and muscles in the back,” explains Dr. Liu. “The spine can become tilted and unevenly stressed to compensate for extra weight, especially weight in the abdomen. As a result, obese or overweight people can experience sciatica and pain from herniated discs and other spine conditions aggravated by too many pounds.”

Surgery, post-operative complications heightened by extra weight But spine risks don't end with back pain stemming from obesity, Dr. Liu says. Indeed, back pain may be only the beginning of these risks, since chronic backache sometimes leads to surgery to remedy the resulting spine condition. All types of surgery come with certain risks, but dozens of extra pounds make these risks even more pronounced. Obese patients are at higher risk for complications and infections after any type of surgery compared to those who aren't obese,

according to the American Obesity Association. And a 2012 study published in the journal Spine found that spinal fusion surgery patients who are morbidly obese - about 100 pounds or more overweight - face nearly double the risk of developing complications, such as problems with wound healing or those related to the heart, lungs and kidneys. Recovering from spine surgery can also be more fraught for those carrying extra weight. “Moving around after surgery is even harder for obese and overweight patients, and wound care

can be an issue when you don’t have the flexibility of a leaner person,” Dr. Liu notes. “This is true of any post-operative recovery, not just in spine surgery, but spine surgery typically follows a long period of having been in pain. The burdens of recovery can feel even greater to those whose motion is somewhat limited.” Tips for weight management and spine health Since spinal surgery patients typically suffer far less back pain after their operation and recovery period, they often become

more active and then find it easier to control their weight, Dr. Liu notes. And these folks can gain motivation from the fact that managing weight through nutrition and exercise not only reduces any existing back pain, but can prevent new back problems in the future. He offers these tips to promote weight management and overall spine health:

Get medical advice. Overweight patients should speak with their doctor to determine how to safely begin weight loss efforts. “This is important because your exercise program should be adapted to any lingering back pain so you don't make it worse.”

Start slow. “Even walking a mile or two each day to begin with is a great start to revving up your metabolism and helping your spine to heal from pain or surgery,” Dr. Liu says.

Seek balance. “A strict diet is tough to sustain for the long run,” he says. “Instead, aim for balance among proteins, fruits, vegetables and starches on an everyday basis, and allow yourself the occasional indulgence so you don't feel deprived.”

“Exercise stimulates healing and a flow of nutrients within the spine itself,” Dr. Liu says. “Getting to - and maintaining - a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your total health and that of your spine.” Atlantic Spine Center is a nationally recognized leader for endoscopic spine surgery with several locations in NJ and NYC. www.atlanticspinecenter.com, www.atlanticspinecenter.nyc

Dental Technology

PAGE 24

August, 2016

Healthcare News - Westchester

Advancements in new dental technology offer better solutions for traditional oral health problems than ever before. The trend in dentistry is utilizing technology to make dentistry more comfortable, durable, efficient and natural-looking for the patient as possible. Patients and their dentists benefit from newer techniques that are less invasive and more dependable than the years of past. Procedures that formerly took multiple trips to the dentist or required multiple health care providers can often be performed in the comfort of one office by one qualified provider. There are many new advancements in dentistry that your dentist may choose to offer for an enhanced state of comfort and improved oral health. These dental advances play an important role in the comfort of the patients as well as the dentists, dental specialists, hygienists, and office managers at the practice, allowing them to provide the highest standard of dental care possible.

Some technologies you may see the next time you visit your dentist may include:

Air-Abrasion

Composite Resins

Composite Resins are used in many restorations such as bonding and veneers. They offer the advantage over older technologies such as gold or amalgam because they are better refined to replicate tooth colors and tooth function. Additionally they are easier to apply and more durable than ever before. Dental professionals can apply the material directly to the tooth and mold it to the shape and color that resembles natural teeth.

Digital Photography

Dentists utilizing digital photography can adapt a photograph for a patient so that they can provide them with an idea of what they will look like after a complex dental procedure such as a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction. Patients can work with their cosmetic dentist to inform them of what they want to look like and what their expectations are. Source: acedentalresource.com

Air-abrasion is a great dental advancement over the dental drill as it allows precise removal of decayed teeth without the use of a local anesthetic. The airabrasion system uses blasts of pellets of air and aluminum oxide to treat tooth problems such as cavities.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are perhaps the leading dental technology advancement because of their fit and function as replacements of a tooth root. The implants integrate with the jaw bone and the procedure can be done in almost any adult who needs missing teeth replaced. The treatment time of this type of procedure has also been shortened as some patients can receive the crown that attaches to the implant immediately after tooth extraction as opposed to waiting six months after.

CAD/CAM

Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Manufacture technologies are used in various industries to provide highly accurate design of items or materials to be constructed. In the dental world this advanced technology allows for the design and fabrication of dental restorations that resemble the look and feel of natural teeth. This type of new dental technology can be used for dental bridges, inlays/onlays, porcelain veneers, and crowns.

NTI-tss Device

The NTI-tss Device is used for patients who suffer from TMD and migraine headaches. The device eliminates the need for more invasive surgery and can help with problems associated with Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) discomforts. The device can be molded to fit teeth and is effective at reducing the pains associated with TMD.

Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation dentistry is being utilized by more and more dentists because it is both safe and effective. Compared to more traditional IV sedation, oral sedation requires no needles and the patient experiences a conscious state of mind and can respond to the dentist. This is helpful for patients who fear the dentist or avoid trips because of anxiety of sitting in a dental chair.

Laser Dentistry

The benefit of laser dentistry is that it offers a much less invasive alternative to many procedures. The light energy that is emitted from lasers results in a shortened and almost painless healing period. This option is commonly available for the treatment of benign tumors, cold sores, crown lengthening, decay removal, gummy smile changes, dental fillings, tongue tie and speech impediment improvements, nerve regeneration for damaged nerves and blood vessels and scars, certain conditions related to sleep apnea, TMJ and tooth sensitivity.

Your child’s first visit to the dentist Healthcare News - Westchester August, 2016

PAGE 25

Topics your dentist may discuss with you might include:

Good oral hygiene practices for your child's teeth and gums and cavity prevention Fluoride needs Oral habits (thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, lip sucking) Developmental milestones Teething Proper nutrition Schedule of dental checkups. Many dentists like to see children every 6 months to build up the child's comfort and confidence level in visiting the dentist, to monitor the development of the teeth, and promptly treat any developing problems.

It is generally recommended that a child be seen by a dentist by the age of 1 or within 6 months after his or her first tooth comes in. The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. This visit gives your child an opportunity to meet the dentist in a nonthreatening and friendly way. Some dentists may ask the parent to sit in the dental chair and hold their child during the exam. The parent may also be asked to wait in the reception area during part of the visit so that a relationship can be built between your child and your dentist. During the exam, your dentist will check all of your child's existing teeth for decay, examine your child's bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. If indicated, the dentist or hygienist will clean any teeth and assess the need for fluoride. He or she will also educate parents about oral health care basics for children and discuss dental developmental issues and answer any questions. You will be asked to complete medical and health information forms concerning the child during the first visit. Come prepared with the necessary information.

When to get child’s first dental X-ray There are no rules for when to start dental X-rays. Some children who may be at higher risk for dental problems (for example, those prone to baby bottle tooth decay or those with cleft lip/palate) should have X-rays taken earlier than others. Usually, most children will have had X-rays taken by the age of 5 or 6. As children begin to get their adult teeth around the age of 6, X-rays play an important role in helping your dentist to see if all of the adult teeth are growing in the jaw, to look for bite problems, and to determine if teeth are clean and healthy. New York’s Class of 2016 first to graduate with Lifesaving CPR Skills PAGE 26

August, 2016

High school seniors all across New York State will don their caps and gowns, adjust their tassels to the fore, and snap smiling selfies with family and friends. After marching down the aisle to receive their diplomas, they’ll march off into the world well-prepared, a new generation of college students, workers, leaders—and lifesavers. This year’s Class of 2016 is the first high school student class in New York State to have received Hands-Only CPR training as a result of the CPR in Schools Law, which went into effect this school year. The American Heart Association’s (AHA) You’re the Cure grassroots volunteers helped make New York the 26th out of 34 states in the U.S. to pass this lifesaving legislation. On June 19th, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed Senate Bill 711 (SB 711), making the Show-Me State the 34th state to add CPR training to its high school curriculum. Now, including Missouri, more than 2 million students will be trained every year, including more than 190,000 high school graduates here in New York State. “Think about next year and every year after, how many more students will learn this lifesaving skill, which is imperative to save a life from sudden cardiac arrest—when the heart rhythm suddenly stops or becomes irregular, causing death within minutes. Over the years, the impact on survival from this leading cause of death in our community will be dramatic,” said Brendan Lyons, Hudson Valley AHA board member, and Superintendent of Arlington Central School District. “When you think about all the things a student can learn throughout their education, CPR skills are certainly one of the most important—and one of the easiest to learn.

It’s a skill that will stay with them wherever they go. If an emergency arises, they’ll have the knowledge and skills to help save a life,” he said. “Thanks to all the volunteer advocates who, for over 15 years, committed time and effort, making phone calls, sending emails, and visiting Albany for Lobby Day events to help pass this law. Thanks to the legislators for their leadership. Thanks to all the school leaders who provided resources to make this education possible. And thanks to the teachers who taught and to the students who learned Hands-Only CPR,” said Bob Elling, chair of the AHA’s New York State advocacy committee. “They started with ABC’s and finished with CPR. Three little letters can make all the difference.

Why Buy Life Insurance instead of traditional LTC Health Insurance now? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC In the last six months the life & health insurance brokerage community has seen a surge of very large Long-Term Care insurance premium increases from many of the nation’s largest insurers. Many state insurance departments recently approved rate increases as high as 68%. Needless to say, existing policy holders are not happy.

So why is this happening? There are several legitimate reasons why the traditional long-term care insurance marketplace is floundering. Most in the industry agree on the following reasons below which have been abbreviated due to the brevity of this article:

1- Simplified Underwriting allowed many Long-Term Care insurance applicants to qualify for coverage without bloodwork or complete medical records who may have not been approved otherwise.

2- Like major medical health insurance, the cost of long-term care over the last two decades has spiraled out of control with no end in sight, especially the cost of Skilled Nursing Homes. 3- Unexpected lower than normal lapse ratios on existing policy owners contributed to thousands more claims.

4- The extended low interest rate environment has limited the insurer’s ability to reinvest annual premiums safely in order to earn the necessary profits to cover their future claims. 5- Unforeseen consequences of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners rate stabilization regulations.

All of these factors have contributed significantly to increasing the claims on older policies than the insurers originally assumed or planned. In fact, the overall number of long-term care insurance policies sold has fallen from 700,000 in 2000 to only 100,000 in 2015¹. It seems the public is aware of these rising premiums and is worried about how they will be able to afford them down the road. At a time when living expenses keep increasing, no one wants to worry about whether or not they will be able to afford their long-term care insurance premium increase at age 80?

So what is the alternative solution for people who want to buy long-term care insurance?

Permanent life insurance policies with a Long-Term Care Insurance Rider or Accelerated Benefit Rider is one truly viable answer. These “hybrid” or “linked” products as they are referred to provide both guaranteed tax-free life & long-term care benefits. In addition, these policies can be purchased on a single premium basis or a fixed guaranteed schedule for a specified number of years, thus eliminating the increasing future premiums concern.

In this way, policy owners can fully recover premiums in the case of premature death while simultaneously leveraging those same dollars three, four or even five times to one to cover future long-term care expenses. Moreover, one contract in particular will allow the policy owner to rescind their policy at any time for a full 100% refund of premium with no surrender charges!

Work closely with your doctor to determine the right balance between traditional medicines and alternative cancer treatments. While complementary and alternative cancer treatments, such as acupuncture, may reduce nausea or pain, they generally aren't powerful enough to replace cancer medications from your doctor.

CMS announces NewYork-Presbyterian, Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine selected for initiative promoting better cancer care Healthcare News - Westchester August, 2016

CMS Oncology Care Model attracts almost twice the expected number of physician group practices

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it has selected NewYork-Presbyterian, Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine to participate in a care delivery model that supports and encourages higher quality, more coordinated cancer care. The institutions join nearly 200 physician group practices and 17 health insurance companies participating in the Medicare arm of the Oncology Care Model, which includes more than 3,200 oncologists and will cover approximately 155,000 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide. “We are honored to be selected as participants in the Oncology Care Model,” said Dr. Gary K. Schwartz, chief of hematology and oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. “With Vice President Biden’s recent Moonshot Initiative, this comes at a pivotal point in cancer innovation and research. As a practicing physician, this initiative is a necessary approach to making cancer care as accessible and affordable as possible.”

The Oncology Care Model is one of the first CMS physician-led specialty care models and builds on lessons learned from other innovative programs and private-sector models. As part of this model, physician practices may receive performance-based payments for episodes of care surrounding chemotherapy administration to Medicare patients with cancer, as well as a monthly care management payment for each beneficiary. Practices participating in the fiveyear Oncology Care Model will provide treatment following nationally recognized clinical guidelines for beneficiaries undergoing chemotherapy, with an emphasis on person-centered care. They will provide enhanced services to beneficiaries who are in the Oncology Care Model to help them receive timely, coordinated treatment. The names of those practices and payers participating in the Oncology Care Model, and more information about the model, can be found on the model’s website: http://innovation.cms.gov/initiatives/OncologyCare/. The Oncology Care Model begins on July 1, 2016 and runs through June 30, 2021.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature

August, 2016

Healthcare News - Westchester

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”

At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
