Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”
THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.
Dr. Gregory Galano MD, Orthopedic Surgeon White Plains and New York, NY
As a board-certified sports medicine orthopedist, I see many patients with activity-related joint, back, and neck pain. Often I am confronted with patients that have exhausted other conservative forms of treatment, but fail to have lasting relief. Many of these patients would like to avoid surgery or may not even be good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr. Donath has proved extremely helpful to this patient population. He spends a great deal of time listening and examining the patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan. He offers innovative treatment options which include chiropractic, active release therapy, Graston technique, non-operative spinal decompression, and even exercise and nutrition programs. Having shared many patients with Dr. Donath, I have seen firsthand the positive interventions he has made in their daily lives and activities. They express the utmost respect and confidence in his clinical evaluation and knowledge, as well as his treatment techniques. I have no reservations recommending him highly to any patient I think may benefit from his services. Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY
“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”
Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

Healthcare News - Westchester tweak your diet so that you can still enjoy foods you love without sabotaging your weight loss or healthy eating efforts.
5. Use Reliable Resources It may be tempting to try a fad diet, but these are usually unrealistic, difficult to maintain, and sometimes even dangerous. Instead, find a reliable source of information to help you understand nutrition. The USDA offers a number of tools and resources, or you can consult a registered dietitian in your area. An RD is specially trained and can give you tips and tricks to help you achieve your specific goals.
6. Eat Breakfast Every Day Surely you've heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is! Eat a big healthy breakfast as early as possible. It will give you more energy, lead you to make healthier choices during the day, and keep you feeling full so you eat less later on.
10 Tips to help you achieve your New Year’s health goals With the new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start. For many people, this means leading a healthier lifestyle and losing weight. If this is your goal, follow these tips to stay on track.
1. Find Your Motivation What is motivating you to lose weight? Do you want to look better in your clothes, feel more energetic, or simply improve your health? Get clear about what you want, and then use that to inspire you throughout your journey.
2. Have a Plan If you were to go on a long road trip, you wouldn't just jump in the car and go. If you did, you'd arrive hungry, tired, and fatigued. That's the same way you'd feel if you jumped into a whole new lifestyle with no planning. Before January 1st arrives, outline the changes you want to implement and decide how you'll fit them into your schedule. Keep in mind that it may be best to take steps rather than tackle everything at once.
3. Make Goals Goals help measure progress. If you don't know where you want to end up, you won't really know how to get there. When making your goals, you need to make SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. For example, a SMART goal would be something like, “I will walk for 15 minutes 3 days for one week.” Or, “I will prepare one new healthy recipe each week for the month of January.”
4. Track What You Eat Looking closely at what you eat is often an eyeopening experience. Use FitDay's free online Calorie Counter and Fitness Log to keep track of everything you put into your body. You don't have to do it for the rest of your life, but it is a great habit to start. Tracking will help you
7. Fill Up on Vegetables Vegetables are filled with nutrients, water, fiber, and very few calories. If you fill half of your plate with vegetables, you'll get fuller faster and cut down your calories without feeling deprived. Use herbs and spices to jazz up vegetables instead of using butter and/or salt to flavor them. 8. Exercise In order to burn calories at a faster rate and build a healthy body, you'll need to incorporate exercise into your life. Take it slow at first, and then increase your time and/or intensity once you feel comfortable. If you haven't exercised in a while, talk to your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to begin an exercise plan.
9. Take It Slow A major mistake many people make when trying to tackle a health resolution is trying to do everything at once. This is almost always a recipe for disaster. Spend a few weeks just trying to achieve 1-2 goals at a time. When you have established new good habits, put a couple more goals on your plate. Remember: You want to make permanent changes, and these will take time to implement.
10. Be Prepared for Lapses A lapse is when you temporarily "fall off the wagon." This is a normal part of the process; no one is perfect. It is important for you to take a moment to recognize that you got sidetracked, but don't use it as an excuse to throw in the towel. Every day is a new chance to start over, so return to your healthy lifestyle immediately.

Top 5 weight-loss plans for the New Year
Most diet plans claim to offer the same results, including a slim figure and better health. But which ones actually deliver? A team of health experts has weighed in, ranking 35 diet plans on overall performance. The evaluations were based on seven categories, including nutrition, promise of short-term and long-term weight loss, and ability to fight chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes, according to U.S. News and World Report, which commissioned the evaluation.
Here are the experts' top five weight-loss plans for the new year.
1. The DASH Diet. Here’s one you may not have heard of before. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet was first developed to lower blood pressure but quickly became popular as a way to lose weight. The diet is low in salt and rich in fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein and nuts.
Who should be on it? The Mayo Clinic Diet is for people who want to get serious about weight loss and developing healthy habits.
2. The TLC Diet. The main aim of the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet plan is to significantly reduce saturated fat intake. It’s a low-fat diet with an emphasis on limiting the amount of meat and whole milk products consumed.
Who should be on it? This one’s best for people with a risk of diabetes.
Who should be on it? The DASH diet is recommended for people with hypertension, or high blood pressure, or prehypertension.
Who should be on it? Health experts recommend this diet for people who want to cut down on cholesterol.
3. The Mayo Clinic Diet. This diet comes in two parts: the “Lose it!” phase and the “Live it!” phase. During the Lose it! phase, dieters spend two weeks exercising daily and developing healthy habits. The Live it! phase is spent learning about food choices, portion control and menu planning.
4. The Mediterranean Diet. Living a Mediterranean lifestyle, with an emphasis on fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and olive oil, is the focus of the Mediterranean Diet. The menu is high on whole grains and veggies as well as seafood.
5. Weight Watchers. One of the most recognized names in the diet industry, Weight Watchers is all about the obvious: losing weight. The program is built around a points system in which foods are given values that add up to a daily total. The diet is extremely flexible, provided you stay within the allotted point limit.
Who should be on it? People who want to take weight loss to the next level.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital unveils “Faces of Burke”
Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will be presenting “Faces of Burke”, a traveling photography exhibit designed to showcase the individuality and courage of its patients. The compelling photographs and stories of the subjects illustrate a diverse and inspiring group of patients who have succeeded in regaining mobility and independence through their experience at Burke. “Burke treats patients who demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination, striving with such courage during the rehabilitative process,” says Richard Sgaglio, Ph.D., senior administrator at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. “We felt that a photo exhibit would dramatically bring their stories to life for the community.” The exhibit is open to the public through Dec. 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Burke Hospital Lobby (785 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY). Following its showcase at Burke, the exhibit will travel to Ridge Hill in Yonkers and other locations in the region. The featured photographer for the exhibit is Jesse Rinka, who is based in Tarrytown.
The photo gallery will feature portraits of six Burke patients, along with their riveting stories: · Max—From amputee to resuming motocross competitions
· Barbara—From orthopedic surgery to hiking the Mount Everest trail · Luke—From a paralyzing spinal cord injury to walking on his own
· Ronald—From a debilitating heart attack to performing surgery again
· Susan—From traumatic brain injury to living independently once more · Barbara—From a severe stroke to becoming an aphasia advocate
“We help thousands of patients each year regain both cognitive abilities and physical strength through our acute inpatient and outpatient programs. ‘Faces of Burke’ will bring the stories of just a few of these remarkable patients to the forefront. We hope their stories bring hope and strength to many others who face the arduous challenges of recovery,” concludes Mr. Sgaglio. For more information on the gallery, please visit www.burke.org/facesofburke. Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a not-forprofit, acute rehabilitation hospital in White Plains, NY. Founded in 1915 through an endowment from philanthropist John Masterson Burke, it is the only hospital in Westchester County dedicated solely to adult rehabilitation medicine. As of 2016, the hospital is now a part of the Montefiore Health System, Inc. Burke offers both inpatient and outpatient programs for those who have experienced a disabling illness, traumatic injury or surgery. For additional information, please visit burke.org.

Cervical Health Awareness Month
Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. But over the last 30 years, the cervical cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50%. The main reason for this change was the increased use of screening tests. Screening can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops. It can also find cervical cancer early − in its most curable stage. Another way to prevent cervical cancer is to get vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes most cases of cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society is actively fighting cervical cancer on many fronts. We are helping people get tested for cervical cancer, helping them understand their diagnosis, and helping them get the treatments they need. The American Cancer Society also funds new research to help prevent, find, and treat cervical cancer. Source://www.cancer.org/

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates
Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.
“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

Women’s health tips by the decade PAGE 14
January, 2017
Healthcare News - Westchester
Sure, you know it’s important to visit the physician’s office on a regular basis, but did you know that caring for your body takes more than just a routine physical? It’s never too early (or late!) to take control of your health. Find out when you should get important medical tests such as a Pap smear, mammogram, colonoscopy, and more, as well as tips on how you can look and feel younger. It’s time to brush up on your health smarts with our guide to women’s health in your 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. In Your 20s
Your parents aren’t making your doctors’ appointments anymore, so it’s up to you to take charge of your health. It’s time to find a healthcare team you trust. You should establish a relationship with a primary care provider to get exams and screenings as your doctor recommends, and visit a gynecologist every year.
In Your 30s
According to Dr. Ladocsi, pelvic and menstrual problems can surface during this decade. Talk to your doctor if your periods have become heavier or more painful than when you were younger. Unfortunately, infertility becomes an issue for many women in their mid-30s. Your gynecologist can help determine if you need to see a fertility specialist.
Watch the Scale
Unfortunately your metabolism isn’t what it used to be. Exercise is probably the first thing to drop off your busy schedule, given that the thirties are typically the time when both your professional and personal lives are thriving. Still, it’s important to find a workout you love and stick to it for 30 minutes a day.
Get Screened
Women in their 20s who are sexually active should be screened for STDs, and those 26 and under should get the HPV vaccine, if they haven’t been vaccinated already. Your gynecologist will work with you on birth control and STD prevention and screening. Thinking about having kids? Schedule a pre-conception checkup with your OB/GYN to prepare yourself for a healthy pregnancy.
In Your 40s
It’s time to add another health screening to your yearly routine. Dr. Ladocsi says women should have yearly mammogram screenings starting at 40. While breast cancer affects nearly 1 out of every 8 women in the United States, early detection by mammography can reduce the risk of death by up to one-third, according to the American Cancer Society. It also provides a greater range of treatment options should you be diagnosed.
Create Lifelong Healthy Habits
It’s time to ditch the junk food and invest in a healthy eating plan. If fruits and veggies become the norm in your diet, your body will thank you in the years to come. And while fine lines and wrinkles are years away, take steps now to prevent signs of aging later. Source://www.sharecare.com/health/womens/Tayor Dahl
Know Your Bones
Many post-menopausal women will experience rapid bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. That’s why it’s important to make bone health a priority long before menopause. Exercises that force your body to work against gravity, such as tennis, dancing and walking are great bone boosters. Your bones will also benefit from a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. If you’re not getting enough calcium and/or vitamin D through your diet alone, you continued on next page may need to take supplements.
Women’s health tips by the decade Healthcare News - Westchester January, 2017
In Your 50s and Beyond continued from previous page
Women ages 40-64 should continue getting routine physical exams every 1-2 years, and those 65 and up should have them every year. It’s also important to visit the gynecologist for regular exams (and mammograms), as well as perimenopausal and menopausal changes. This is the decade where screening for colorectal cancer becomes increasingly important. While it’s the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, it’s also one of the most preventable diseases with routine check-ups.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, women are more likely to have problems falling and staying asleep than men. Not only does sleep help combat memory loss, but it also reduces stress and helps dieters lose weight.
Love Your Heart Get Vaccinated
Vaccines aren’t just for kids. As your age increases, so does the risk of life-threatening complications from the flu and pneumonia. Luckily, you can prevent both with vaccinations. Talk to your doctor about the shingles vaccine after you turn 60.
Heart disease is the leading cause of deaths in the US, killing one in four women. Women won’t necessarily experience the classic symptoms of a heart attack such as crushing chest pain or pain radiating down one arm. In fact, many women experience hard-to-recognize heart attack symptoms such as shortness of breath, jaw pain and nausea. Bottom line: If you experience chest discomfort or one of the above symptoms, head to the emergency room. Source://www.sharecare.com/health/womens/Tayor Dahl

Important information about… preventing birth defects
What are birth defects?
Birth defects are abnormal conditions that happen before or at the time of birth. Some are mild–like an extra finger or toe. Some are very serious– like a heart defect. They can cause physical, mental, or medical problems. Some, like Down syndrome or sickle cell anemia, are caused by genetic factors. Others are caused by certain drugs, medicines or chemicals. But the causes of most birth defects are still a mystery. Researchers are working hard to learn the causes of birth defects so that we can find ways to prevent them.
How serious are birth defects?
One in 33 babies is born with a birth defect. Many people believe that birth defects only happen to other people. Birth defects can and do happen in any family. About 120,000 babies in the U.S. each year have birth defects.
What is the good news?
The good news is that new ways of preventing and treating birth defects are being found. Genes that may cause birth defects are being found every day, providing hope for new treatments and cures. Genetic counseling provides parents with information about their risks based on family history, age, ethnic or racial background, or other factors. Better healthcare for mothers with problems like diabetes or seizures can improve their chances of having healthy babies. Immunization prevents infections like German measles (rubella) that can harm unborn babies. Today, babies born with birth defects can live longer and healthier lives. Special care after birth and newborn screening tests can help these babies.
What steps can women take to prevent birth defects?
Not all birth defects can be prevented. But a woman can increase her ownchance of having a healthy baby. Many birth defects happen very early in pregnancy, sometimes before a woman even knows she is pregnant. Remember that about half of all pregnancies are unplanned. Here are some steps a woman can take to get ready for a healthy pregnancy: • • • •
•
•
• • •
Get early prenatal care and go to every appointment. Take a vitamin with 400 micrograms (mcg) folic acid every day. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and street drugs. Keep hands clean by washing them often with soap and water to prevent infections. Talk with the health care professional about any medical problems and medicine use (both prescription and over-the-counter). Ask about avoiding any substances at work or at home that might be harmful to a developing baby. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Avoid unpasteurized (raw) milk and foods made from it. Avoid eating raw or under cooked meat.
For more information, ask your health care professional or local health department how to plan for a healthy baby. Phelps earns designation as a “Baby-Friendly Hospital
Phelps Hospital has always been known as a great place to have a baby, but now it has officially joined the international ranks of “BabyFriendly® Hospitals,” recognized for offering an optimal level of care and support for new mothers and their babies. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program created in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This prestigious designation, made by Baby-Friendly USA, recognizes Phelps for offering new mothers the information, confidence and skills they need to succeed in breastfeeding and caring for their infants. Phelps is now one of just 381designated BabyFriendly hospitals and birth centers across the United States and one of more than 20,000 worldwide. Phelps is the 16th hospital in New York State and only the second hospital in the Hudson Valley to achieve this designation.
the part of the hospital,” said Dr. Lawrence Mendelowitz, director of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Phelps. “We are proud to have earned this award, but prouder still of providing the highest level of maternity care to our patients.” “Becoming Baby-Friendly means new parents are happier, healthier and more confident when they take their babies home,” said Yeva Posner, RN, IBCLC, the lactation consultant at Phelps who has led the four-year effort to earn the designation. “Studies show that the initial hospital experience strongly influences parents’ ability to successfully bond with their infant, understanding the newborn’s needs and breastfeeding.”
Another aspect of Baby-Friendly care is the emphasis placed on the importance of the connection between the mother and her newborn. “At Phelps we implement skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby. We help them initiate breastfeeding right away in the delivery room, and keep them together to promote the normal biological transition to life outside the womb,” said Posner. “We are committed to ensuring that all those who deliver at Phelps Hospital are offered the best care, education and support needed to give their babies a healthy start in life.” For more information about maternity care at Phelps Hospital, please call 914-366-3382 or go to http://phelpshospital.org/clinical-services/maternity/.

A new era of community-based healthcare was ushered in with the ribbon-cutting of a state-of-the-art surgical and oncology pavilion at NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital. It hydrates and moisturizes with botanically derived antioxidants, resurfacing acids and growth factor. At $195, the price may be a bit steep for this Youth Intensive Creme, but when it comes to lines and wrinkles and putting your best face forward, only you can decide if theinvestment is worth it.

Soothe and repair. Rough, dry elbows and heels and ragged cuticles and dry patches. Let the winter fun begin, or not. Green Goo sounds, well, gooey, but it's not. Instead, it's a company that makes "Food for Your Skin" with natural herbs and essential oils. Their Skin Repair is packed into in a handy little tin small enough to throw into a bag. Aside from soothing rough skin, its magic blend of aloe vera and vitamin E oils can treat sunburns, puffy eyes, wrinkles and scars. The company aims to “bring the Farm to Farmacy.” Cute, huh? And the fact that it rubs in nicely and doesn't leave a greasy residue is a big plus, too.
beautiful ways to prep for winter
With winter upon us—your health is not the only thing in need of attention. Your beauty is an important consideration, too. After all, with colder temps comes drier air—and that air, in search of moisture, starts to suck it out of your skin and hair. Dryness equals wrinkles, breakage and a reminder that being a so-called natural beauty comes at a price.
Plump and hydrate your lips. The harsh winds of winter can whip up some pretty chapped lips. And chapped lips look so withered and blah. Life Cell Skincare has a solution: its Lip Plumping Treatment hydrates and plumps at the same time (no injections required). The topical treatment stimulatescollagen and hyaluronic acid production and claims to help your lips look significantly fuller after just one week of use.
Indulge your facial skin. Words like "rich" and "luxurious" are used to describe this face cream from iS Clinical, which gives your precious skin a head start on the winter by protecting it against the harsh elements.
Care for your hair. Give your strands a boost and feed them well with healthy ingredients like grapeseed extract, argan and olive oils. From Mastey comes this color-safe restorative mask that's 100 percent vegan and paraben-free. The company also offers shampoos and other hair treatment products that will help care for the health and wellness of your precious locks.

2017 Limits for HSA Contributions By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC
The 2017 limits on contribution and out-of-pocket spending amounts for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and for the High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) were set again this year by the IRS and only the individual contribution limit was increased. The rates reflect the cost-of-living adjustment and rounding rules of Internal Revenue Code Section 223. A comparison of the 2016 and 2017 limits is shown below:
Contribution and Out-of-Pocket Limits for Health Savings Accounts and for High-Deductible Health Plans
For 2016
For 2017

Individual: $6,550 Family: $13,100

Individual: $6,550 Family: $13,100
A n
* Catch-up contributions can be made any time during the year in which the HSA participant turns 55. ** Unlike other limits, the HSA catch-up contribution amount is not indexed; any increase would require statutory change.
An HSA is always in an individual’s name. There are no joint HSAs, even when the HSA is linked to a family coverage HDHP and subject to the higher family coverage contribution limit. Employer sponsored plans include an “employee with spouse” and “employee with child(ren)” tier in addition to single employee and family coverage. An “employee with child(ren)” such as an eligible employee and her dependent child, would fall under the HSA family coverage limits. HSA penalties for nonqualified expenses
The penalty for using HSA funds for nonqualified medical expenses for those under the age of 65 (unless totally and permanently disabled) is 20 percent of the funds used for nonqualified expenses. Funds spent for nonqualified purposes also are also subject to income tax. HSAs and coverage of adult children under age 26
While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows parents to add their adult children (up to age 26) to their health plans, the IRS has not changed its definition of a dependent for health savings accounts. This means that an employee whose 24-year-old child is covered on their HAS qualified high-deductible health plan is not eligible to use HSA funds to pay for medical bills for that 24-year-old. If account holders can't claim a child as a dependent on their tax returns, then they can't spend HSA dollars on services provided to that child.
According to the IRS definition, a dependent is a qualifying child (son, daughter, stepchild, sibling or stepsibling, or any descendant of these) who: • • • •
Has same principal place of abode as the employee for more than one-half of the taxable year. Has not provided over one-half of their own support during the taxable year. Is not yet age 19 (or not yet age 24 if a student) at the end of the tax year. Is permanently and totally disabled.
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act HSA Limits are Higher
A frequent source of confusion are the two sets of limits on out-of-pocket expenses that employers should keep in mind. Out-of-pocket limits under the PPACA are higher than the IRS’s out-of-pocket limits on HSA-qualified HDHPs. This is because the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) uses a premium-adjustment percentage method based on a projection of annual increases in per enrollee employer-sponsored insurance premiums to modify the maximum out-of-pocket limit for PPACA compliant plans while the IRS uses the consumer price index to adjust its out-of-pocket limit for HSA eligible HDHPs. The 2017 PPACA out-of-pocket limits are $7,150 for individuals and $14,300 for families.

Protecting seniors and family assets – with expertise and compassion Healthcare News - Westchester January, 2017

Elder-care planning can be complicated, timeconsuming and emotional for everyone involved. No matter whether a family is dealing with medical or housing issues for a senior, or tackling the details of setting up a financial trust or other estate planning, it’s vital to work with a professional who is well-versed in the intricacies of elder law and offers personalized service to create a long-term elder-care plan that’s best for you or your loved one. “One of the key factors is asset protection, and it’s not a simple topic,” says attorney Olga Berde Mahl, managing partner of Olga Berde Mahl & Associates in New Rochelle. “For instance, many families have heard that assisted-living facilities may require a five-year look-back period regarding a person’s assets,” she says. “But they may not know that an asset protection plan can be created that avoids the need of placing a senior in a nursing home and dissipating family assets, with only a 30-day financial lookback period.”
Wisely structured asset protection can help assure that a senior remains living safely at home, while receiving top-notch care. It may also permit them to keep as much of their hard-earned money and property as possible, with some, or most, of their care costs paid for by the government. Olga Berde Mahl & Associates offers supportive elder-care planning advice that’s coupled with extensive, hands-on experience. Their services range from wills, health-care directives and powers of attorney to advance or emergency planning, trusts, and Medicare or Medicaid issues. “We also work with families in real estate matters and business-law issues, such as how having a family-owned business might affect your estate plan,” she says. Their legal team includes a knowledgeable lawyer, a licensed clinical social worker to assist in Medicaid filing/approval matters and homecare benefits assessments, plus an experienced, compassionate staff to serve clients.
“It’s important to put the necessary elder-planning steps in motion as early as possible to avoid possible complications in the future,” Berde Mahl says. “Ideally, it should be considered before problems become too extensive. So don’t put it off - time is definitely of the essence when it comes to elder-care and estate planning.” Olga Berde & Associates is located at 271 North Avenue, Suite 917, in New Rochelle, with a satellite office in New York City. They also work with clients in other areas of Westchester, as well as Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Nassau counties; the firm also serves families in other parts of the U.S. and internationally. County Executive Rob Astorino shares advice as a guest on Iona Prep’s Gael Force Live Healthcare News - Westchester January, 2017
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino was interviewed for upcoming segments to air on Iona Prep’s Gael Force Live (GFL) show. Streamed through www.Youtube.com/IonaPreparatory, GFL features morning announcements, delivered by student anchors, as well as separately-produced news packages showcasing different aspects of the school and community. Astorino was interviewed by Damian Garcia ’17, of Yonkers, who serves as an anchor and producer of the show. Damian has future goals in both politics and broadcast journalism, similar to the path of Astorino. “It is always a pleasure to meet with our future leaders, and tap into what’s going on in their world,” said Astorino. “The Gael Force Live team is an exceptional group of young men working hard toward their goals. I was happy to share my journey and experience with them, and see their show’s production in action.” The discussion, which will be aired in different segments early next week, includes the County Executive’s path into politics, advice and notes about the broadcast world, his past experience as program director for Sirius Satellite Radio’s “The Catholic Channel,” and much more. Post interview, Astorino toured through the production area for GFL and the Paul Verni Center for the Arts. The Verni Center is a focal point of Iona Prep’s recently announced Centennial Campaign for Excellence, which will not only renovate the existing structure, but includes an addition that will provide more instructional space and a 435-seat auditorium. The campaign further underscores the vital importance of arts in education. Reaccredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools in 2015, Iona Preparatory School K-12 sits on 37 acres of suburban green in New Rochelle, N.Y., where it educates young men to be moral and ethical leaders.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature
After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”
At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has alof ready helps thousands herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
