Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.

Dr. Gregory Galano MD, Orthopedic Surgeon White Plains and New York, NY

As a board-certified sports medicine orthopedist, I see many patients with activity-related joint, back, and neck pain. Often I am confronted with patients that have exhausted other conservative forms of treatment, but fail to have lasting relief. Many of these patients would like to avoid surgery or may not even be good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr. Donath has proved extremely helpful to this patient population. He spends a great deal of time listening and examining the patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan. He offers innovative treatment options which include chiropractic, active release therapy, Graston technique, non-operative spinal decompression, and even exercise and nutrition programs. Having shared many patients with Dr. Donath, I have seen firsthand the positive interventions he has made in their daily lives and activities. They express the utmost respect and confidence in his clinical evaluation and knowledge, as well as his treatment techniques. I have no reservations recommending him highly to any patient I think may benefit from his services. Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY

“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”

Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

It might seem hard to believe, but the celebration that is Thanksgiving Day is almost here. Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday, but giving thanks is universal. It brings with it a reminder to stop and give thanks for all of the things in our lives that we have, and the amazing friends and families we are all fortunate enough to have in our lives. Thanksgiving is not just a placeholder between Halloween and Christmas: It is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Thanksgiving traces its origins to ancient harvest festivals. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. From there, it has been feasts, football and family. Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Take a look around: You have so much to be thankful for! From all of us at Healthcare News, Happy Thanksgiving! Please feel free to contact me with you thoughts and suggestions at Jim@HealthcareNewsMagazine.com or 845-202-4737. Out-of-control eating leads to more than just health-robbing weight gain. It also plays havoc with your self-esteem, confidence and enjoyment of life. Julie Latz of New Rochelle knows first-hand the frustration of repeatedly trying to lose weight, making progress, then sabotaging yourself with binge eating that quickly sends you back to square one. “For 45 years, I went through that yo-yo cycle of dieting and bingeing,” Julie says. “I would gain 40 or 50 pounds, take some of it off, then feel so deprived of the foods I love that I would start binging.” Julie finally decided to take the reins. She created a simple process to control her eating patterns and lose weight that allowed her to eat the foods she enjoys without feeling the need to overeat them. And after stepping off the diet/binge rollercoaster for good, Julie began sharing her secrets of attaining freedom from food addiction.

Julie Latz For the past five years, she’s been offering the Peaceful Eater program to help men, women and teens around the world stop the insanity of yo-yo dieting and food obsession.

“By the time people find me, they’ve tried everything,” says Julie. Peaceful Eater provides easy steps and daily support/coaching to develop a calm relationship with food, without dieting or deprivation. A key component of Peaceful Eater is learning to stay in what Julie calls “the magic zone” of eating, where you don’t feel deprived or have the urge to binge. Julie offers one-on-one coaching via phone or Skype, and small group coaching via an online portal, as well as in-person classes in Rye, N.Y. and Stamford, Conn. The cost varies, says Julie, who is certified as a Food Psychology Coach through the Spencer Institute; each participant can personalize the program in terms of what features they feel will benefit them most. “And since I’ve been through the same thing myself with food, I know what you’re going through; I will hold your hand the whole way through, with compassion and without judgement,” she says. Contact Julie at the website peacefuleater.com. For information about classes in Rye or Stamford, call Julie at (914) 629-0073.

Six Westchester Medical Center Health Network Staff Members to Go the Distance to Make a Difference at TCS NYC Marathon Donations are being accepted for Team Members running on November 6 in support of patients at 10 hospital affiliates across the Hudson Valley

Six Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) employees from network facilities across the Hudson Valley will channel the fighting spirit demonstrated by so many of their patients when they team up to Go the Distance to Make a Difference in the TCS New York City Marathon November 6. The team’s six members – two doctors, two registered nurses, a physician’s assistant and a hospital administrator – all of whom are motivated by their own special stories – will compete in support of the life-changing and lifesaving care provided by WMCHealth’s 10 Hudson Valley hospitals. Each competitor is dedicating his or her efforts to the patients they care for each day. “This collective effort is yet another example of WMCHealth’s dedication to the hundreds of thousands of Hudson Valley residents who entrust

our organization to provide the very best care for them and their loved ones,” said Michael D. Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health Network. “Running a marathon is not unlike some of the medical challenges faced by our patients as both require internal strength and perseverance. Participating in the TCS New York City Marathon in order to raise funds that will stay right here in the region and help our neighbors during their greatest time of need is in the true spirit of WMCHealth’s mission.” Donations collected for each runner’s efforts will support essential programs and services in the local and regional hospitals the runners represent. Contributions can be made by visiting https://www.crowdrise.com/westchestermedicalcenterhealthnetwork.

Here’s a closer look at the runners who will Go the Distance to Make a Difference for the Hudson Valley. Adele Rushneck, RN, Valhalla – Running for Westchester Medical Center, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

Adele Rushneck knows a thing or two about trauma. A member of the WMCHealth team for 37 years, she is the Assistant Nurse Manager in Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma Intensive Care Unit. Despite her background, nothing could have prepared Rushneck for the sudden, unexpected loss of her son in 2013, when she was training to run her first marathon. Devastated, Rushneck stopped running for several weeks. Eventually, believing her son would have wanted her to finish what she had started, she rededicated herself to training. And in what she deemed a “healing experience,” Rushneck went on to complete the New York City Marathon. “Life is a marathon, and no matter what you may be facing, I believe it is important to set your sights on a goal or a path, dig deep and stay focused,” she said. This year’s event will mark Rushneck’s third TCS New York City Marathon. She’ll be running in honor of all Westchester Medical Center patients, as well as the staff that is so committed to their care. “It might not be easy, but you will get to that finish line or you will get on the right path,” she said.

Stephen Ferrando, MD, West Harrison – Running for the Behavioral Health Center, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

As Stephen Ferrando, MD, paces himself through his third TCS New York City Marathon – he’s run in more than 40 marathons total – he’ll have the minds of others in mind. Dr. Ferrando is Director of Psychiatry for WMCHealth’s Behavioral Health Center, which has offered a full spectrum of inpatient, outpatient, community and emergency mental health care for individuals and families since 1929. He recognizes that, much like a marathon, his work and that of others to gain acceptance and understanding of mental health challenges has been long and arduous. But he will continue to pound the pavement, and he hopes his latest 26.2-mile journey can be an impactful step in the right direction. “Behavioral health and mental health are key aspects of who we all are, but the issue is often accompanied by a stigma,” Dr. Ferrando said. “By running the TCS NYC Marathon in support of our patients, I hope to help raise awareness and minimize that stigma.”

Jean Lavin, RN, Somers – Running for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

When discussing her 29-year career with the organization, Jean Lavin, RN, likes to say, “I grew up here.” As a Pediatric Cardiology Nurse Clinician at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, she’s seen many patients grow up – as well as many who were robbed of that chance. Lavin, running in her second straight TCS New York City Marathon, is dedicating her race to all of her past and present patients, as well as to the dedicated staff she feels privileged to work with daily. “I’ve had the opportunity to see and be inspired by the wonderful, lifesaving work of our physicians and nurses, and to help patients and families understand and navigate complex and difficult cardiac diagnoses,” she said. Ramon Rivera, MD, New City – Running for Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

Ramon Rivera, MD, has an affinity for the NYC Marathon. He grew up in Manhattan and embraced the excitement surrounding the event each year. He’s been an avid runner since childhood.

Go the Distance to Make a Difference Ramon Rivera, MD cont.

As Bariatric Director at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Weight Loss Surgical Institute – he also sees patients at WMCHealth’s Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis and St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick – Dr. Rivera is eager to raise awareness and encourage people to embrace a physically active, healthy lifestyle. On Marathon Day, he’ll be thinking of his patients’ best interests in the long run as he endures his own long run. “Preparing for a marathon is hard work, but in the end, the satisfaction and the benefit are tremendous,” said Dr. Rivera. “I hope to raise awareness and encourage people in our communities to embrace a physically active and healthy lifestyle.”

Healthcare News - Westchester November, 2016

Marie-Michele Mugnos, PA, Rhinebeck – Running for HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

Marie-Michele Mugnos, PA, has always been a giver. Thanks to the benefits she’s received from running, this Physician’s Assistant at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston has become even more willing – and able – to give. “I find great motivation in running for my well-being, to stay healthy and to get the most out of my own life so I have more to give in all arenas,” she said. A friend encouraged Mugnos to try running a couple years ago, and she’s been on the move ever since.

On Nov. 6, she will embark on her first marathon, running to support HealthAlliance’s Broadway and Mary’s Avenue campuses, as well as Margaretville Hospital. “Every run is a tiny life challenge conquered for me,” she said. “It is both a privilege and an honor to run in support of our organization for the betterment of our patients.”

WMCHealth is the pre-eminent provider of integrated healthcare in the Hudson Valley. For more information about WMCHealth, visit WMCHealth.org.

George Prisco, Highland – Running for MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

George Prisco is no stranger to rugged competitions. Executive Director of Mid-Hudson Valley StaffCo at Poughkeepsie’s MidHudson Regional Hospital, he’s finished seven Ironm a n triathlons, most recently in 2013, when he completed the Ironman’s grueling trifecta – a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile marathon – in one day. Prisco thought his marathon days were done. But when the opportunity arose to run in support of MidHudson Regional Hospital and the thousands of area residents who rely on its services each year, he wasn’t about to turn it down. “Anytime someone can turn their passion into a benefit for something else they are passionate about, it is a perfect scenario,” Prisco said. “I can’t think of anything better than to do what I love outside of work to benefit what I love at work.”

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates

Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.

“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

The Iona College Cheer squad with Ticker-the-Heart, AHA Mascot at the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk

Nearly 1,000 Westchester area residents laced up their sneakers for a heart-healthy walk at Kensico Dam yesterday at the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk event. Many walkers formed company teams and walked for a festive team outing, but, more importantly, for their heart health. Many others, like Jake Breen’s family, walked to honor lives saved because of treatment advancements made possible from scientific research. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the No. 1 killer of all Americans. In fact, someone dies from CVD every 39 seconds. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, killing more women than all forms of cancer ----. Congenital cardiovascular defects, like one-year old Jake Breen was born with, are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. Jake Breen was born on April 14, 2015. His pediatrician detected a heart murmur which was diagnosed by a pediatric cardiologist as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)--a hole separating the two lower chambers of the heart which causes lower oxygen levels to the body. and struggled to breathe while nursing. After four months, the hole did not close on its own and Jake had open heart surgery at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester to repair the defect. Jake was released less than 72 hours after having open heart surgery. His parents call him their miracle baby. Emcee Lisa LaRocca, News 12 reporter, shared Jake’s story with the crowd. Quoting his mother, Mary Katherine Breen, she said, after Jake’s surgery, “It was the first time he had ever breathed easy in his life. For the first time I saw color in his cheeks. For the first time I was able to feed him when he wanted to be fed. For the first time when I held him I felt his heart beat at a normal pace.” Early detection, advances in science and treatments of congenital heart defects helps save lives, and that is what inspired the Breen family to join the Heart Walk. Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless By Dale McKnight Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter. And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize. “August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester. Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns. She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services. Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia). She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health. A member of the American Hair Loss Council, Diane also completed the first-ever Certified Hair Coach program in the U.S., based on a training process launched by Dr. Bauman. “Studying and educating others about the scalp has always been my passion,” she says. “My motto is: ‘A healthy scalp is a landscape to healthy hair.’” She adds: “People know that taking care of their gums is important for healthy teeth. It’s the same for the scalp – for healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp.” With a simple scalp analysis, she can determine the overall health of the scalp, and recommend a customized treatment to help each client look and feel their best. What triggers hair problems? “Some causes are genetic,” she says. “And most people don’t know that hereditary hair loss is manageable. The sooner you address it, the better the results.” She adds: “Other factors like chemicals and products we put on our hair, chlorine from pools, allergies to certain substances, or the environment can also play a role. Each client’s case is different, which is what makes my work so interesting.”

When treating clients, Diane uses various patented hair care products, therapeutic scalp massage and, in some cases, a series of FDA-cleared laser therapy treatments to stimulate hair growth. “Low-light laser therapy is good for certain scalp conditions such as some types of dermatitis and early stages of thinning hair,” notes Diane, who underwent special training to use the instruments. “It can help increase density and rejuvenate hair. It’s not a magic wand that magically regrows a full head of hair, but it makes a noticeable improvement in many cases.” Starting treatment for hair problems sooner rather than later will increase the chances of better results, she adds. “Restoring your hair can have an amazing effect on your life. From boosting your confidence to increasing your attractiveness, you’ll experience a world of difference when you do.” Diane can be reached at 914-222-0731.

5 facts about family caregivers

As American society gets grayer, families are taking the lead role in providing care for aging adults. Most American adults say a family member is caring for their aging parent who needs help handling their affairs or caring for themselves. And if they’re not already helping out a parent, most expect to do so someday.

Here are five facts about caregivers of older Americans for National Family Caregivers Month:

1

There are 40.4 million unpaid caregivers of adults ages 65 and older in the United States. Of that group, nine-in-ten are providing care for an aging relative, and a plurality is caring for a parent, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Caregivers may perform a range of activities, such as providing companionship, assisting with housework or providing medical and other forms of physical care. Among caregivers of older adults, most provide help to one aging adult, but 22% provide help to two and 7% provide help to three or more. Roughly half of these caregivers have been providing help for two years or less. More than a third have been providing care for five or more years. Most caregivers of older adults provide help to others weekly or less often. One-in-five caregivers say they provide care on a daily basis. Many are also juggling their own jobs with their caregiving responsibilities. Six-in-ten (61%) caregivers are employed, including nearly half who work full-time.

2

3

Adults ages 45 to 64 are the most likely to be caregivers. In fact, about a quarter (23%) of adults ages 45 to 64 cares for an aging adult.

A significant share of adults ages 65 and older – 17% – serve as caregivers for another aging American. These adults, who themselves are advanced in age, are the second most likely age group to be caregivers. Many in this group are caring for a spouse or partner (29%) or a friend or neighbor (33%). Most caregiving for aging parents is not in the form of financial support or personal care. More commonly, adults have helped their parent with errands, housework or home repairs. A recent Pew Research survey asked about specific types of support adults may have provided for their aging parents in the last 12 months. About six-in-ten adults with at least one parent age 65 or older say they have helped their parent with errands, housework or home repairs. A significantly smaller share has provided financial help to a parent age 65 and older. Among this group, nearly half say providing financial support was for a special circumstance, while 43% say it was for a recurring expense. Relatively few caregivers say they helped with personal care, such as bathing or getting dressed. Women are twice as likely as men to say they provided this type of care for an aging cont. on next page parent (19% vs. 8%). Source:www.pewresearch.org/5-facts-about-family-caregivers/

Emotional support is a big part of caregiving. Most adults say they provide some emotional support for their aging parents, but more women say this than men. Fully 68% of adults say they do this at least sometimes, including about one-third who provided emotional support to their parent frequently. Some 39% of women say they provide emotional support frequently to an aging parent compared with 30% of men.

Most adults who have helped an aging parent see it as rewarding; relatively few say it is stressful. Among those who have helped their parents in a matter of ways – financially, with errands housework, or home repairs or with personal care – 88% say it’s rewarding. Roughly one-third (32%) of adults who have helped with any of these tasks say helping an aging parent is stressful. Americans are generally comfortable with the level of care they are providing for their aging parents. About three-quarters of adults with at least one parent ages 65 or older say that their aging parent (or parents) expects about the right amount of support from them. Just 8% say they are expected to do too much for their parents. Women (11%) are more likely to feel this way than men (4%). Note: The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines eldercare providers (referred to here as caregivers of older Americans) as anyone age 15 and older who has provided unpaid care to any adult age 65 and older in the last three to four months because of a condition related to aging.

Early palliative care seems to help caregivers, too

Such programs improve quality of life for folks caring for terminal cancer patients, study finds

Palliative care that's offered soon after a terminal cancer diagnosis can also help caregivers, a new study indicates. “This study suggests that early palliative care creates a powerful positive feedback loop in families facing cancer,” study author Dr. Areej El-Jawahri said in news release from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She noted that patients get a direct benefit from such care, and it seems that “their caregivers experience a positive downstream effect, which may make it easier for them to care for their loved ones.” El-Jawahri is an oncologist with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston. The study included 275 family caregivers. Their loved ones had recently been diagnosed with lung and gastrointestinal cancers. The cancers were incurable.

The patients let the researchers know who their primary caregiver was. It could have been a friend or family member. The researchers met with the caregivers at the start of the study. They saw the caregivers again at 12 and 24 weeks. Introducing palliative care shortly after cancer diagnosis led to better quality of life for caregivers. It also led to fewer symptoms of depression among the caregivers, the study found. This study is the first to show that offering palliative care early may offer significant benefits for people caring for dying cancer patients, the researchers said. The findings are to be presented Wednesday during a briefing that will preview the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago. Studies are generally considered preliminary until they've been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Why is Asset Based Long-Term Care Insurance the best option now? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC

Most insurance brokers understand that no client wants to pay health insurance premiums forever. As people get older and eventually exit the workforce, they generally prefer to reduce or eliminate bills. They would much rather self-insure and keep their money than pay for health insurance that they may never use. But what happens when they simply do not have enough capital to employ this strategy? The obvious answer has always been to share the risk with an highly rated insurance company. Today, in light of the recent long-term care rate increases, what insurance product they utilize to share this risk is the real issue. We will explore this new product strategy in this article.

Most people readily identify with an Asset Based LTC insurance strategy that provides the following benefits: 12345-

Leverage - owner can multiply his/her existing asset to create at least three or more times the dollars in benefits. Liquidity - owner retains control of asset instead of sending nonrefundable premiums to an insurance company. Recovery - owner family can recover a specified amount greater than the original deposits in case of death. Guarantees - owner premiums & benefits are guaranteed for the life of the contract. Fixed - owner premiums are fixed for a specific period of time, usually less than 10 years.

People want guarantees, but unfortunately, traditional long-term care health insurance does not offer them. As a result, the retail insurance market has been shifting to an Asset Based LTC insurance model. Retired people simply do not want to worry about where they are going to find the dollars needed to pay increasing premiums or if they can even afford to pay these future premiums. Most agree that they would prefer to pay a fixed guaranteed premium for a specific period of time, usually less than 10 years, in exchange for lifelong coverage.

Example: Sally is a retired 65 year old widowed grandmother and wants long-term care insurance. She explains that her family consists of two adult married children and five grandchildren. She wants to secure the long-term care insurance coverage in case she needs home health care as she is all alone and her children live out of state. She also makes it clear that she wants to guarantee that most of her assets pass directly to her beneficiaries in case of her death.

Sally decides to purchase an Asset Based Universal Life policy with a Long-Term Care Rider for $15,000 a year. As per the terms of the contract, she pays for only 10 years and then the policy benefits will be paid up. In year one, Sally has secured $364,971 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $210,156 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $157,617 of guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage1.

Assuming Sally pays all 10 years of premiums, at age 75 her policy has grown with the 3% inflation rider to $402,799 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $221,602 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $166,201 of guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage2. If Sally lives to age 84, her policy will grow to $444,830 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $210,156 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $157,617 in guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage3.

Additionally, due to the liquidity feature of her insurance policy, Sally always has access to her deposits in the case of emergencies. For example, if Sally decides to move in with one of her children when she turns 84 years old, this living arrangement may require her to surrender some or all of the policy for cash so as to subsidize minor home improvements. In this example, the insurer would remit up to $155,157 without any surrender charges. Note that the single premium version of the Asset Based LTCI policy provides a 100% Return of Premium Rider at any time4.

In summary, Sally has leveraged her assets in order to pay for any potential long-term care expenses several times over without risk. She has guaranteed a triple tax-free death benefit to her heirs in case of her passing well in excess of the original deposits she made into the contract. She has also guaranteed herself access to that money in case of a terminal illness or lifestyle change. Readers will be hard pressed to find another guaranteed insurance contract that covers all of life's eventualities.

2016 LFL of NY MoneyGuard Reserve proposal. 2016 LFL of NY MoneyGuard Reserve optional inflation protection will automatically increase the monthly EOBR benefits annually by 3%. 3 2016 LFL of NY MoneyGuard Reserve terminal illness rider allows the owner to accelerate a portion of the Specified Amount of death benefit in the event the insured is diagnosed by a physician as terminally ill. Terminally ill means the insured's life expectancy does not exceed 12 months from the date of the physician statement. Limitations on Benefit Payment Amount: A one-time payment may be requested, excluding any administrative fee, and may not be less than 25% or more than 75% of the policy's then current Specified Amount of death benefit, less any outstanding Indebtedness. 4 2016 LFL of NY MoneyGuard Reserve Return of Premium Rider will pay the initial premium less any indebtedness, withdrawals or benefits paid. There is a one-time additional charge for the Return of Premium Rider that is already factored into the premium. 1 2

Senior Law Day took place on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the County Center in White Plains. The free event featured 20 workshops on elder law topics, plus free 15minute, one-on-one consultations with some of the county’s leading legal, financial and geriatric care experts. “Successful aging is a lifelong process that requires thoughtful planning,” Astorino said. “It’s never too early to get yourself on the right path, and even if you’ve delayed putting together a plan, then now’s the time to start. Senior Law Day offers direct access to the professionals, free of charge.” Senior Law Day provided a wealth of useful information and resources, including: • Workshops covering everything from estate and financial planning to health care and affordable housing, taxes, wills, trusts, and much more, including two workshops in Spanish.

Healthcare News - Westchester

• A free copy of “MAP: My Aging Plan,” a booklet that details what individuals and families can do from their 20’s through their 80’s and beyond to age successfully. • A review of long-term care policies (participants should bring a copy of their policy to the event). • Updated copies (upon request) of the “Elder Law Q&A: An Introduction to Aging Issues and Planning for the Future,” in both English and Spanish. Senior Law Day builds upon the county’s award-winning Livable Communities initiative, which aims to empower Westchester’s older adults to remain in their homes as they age with dignity, independence and civic involvement. This past spring, Senior Law Day expanded and launched a new event in Yorktown, where hundreds of Northern Westchester residents

participated in free workshops and consultations. Additional evening programs are offered in partnership with the Westchester County Library System throughout the year. “An estimated 7,000 seniors, family members and caregivers have benefitted from this program since Senior Law Day began in 1999,” said Mae Carpenter, Commissioner of the County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS). “I get many questions from seniors and families, like: ‘When do I get started with estate planning?’ and ‘Should I continue to pay premiums for longterm care insurance?’ Senior Law Day is a great resource where seniors and their families can begin and continue planning their journey into aging.” Senior Law Day is presented by DSPS, the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, and the Ninth Judicial District of the New York State Office of Court Administration.

Lost in the woods about home care for your loved ones? Healthcare News - Westchester November, 2016

By Olga Berde Mahl, P.C.

This meant a great deal to me for my Mom and Aunt. How to provide compassionate and competent home care for my aging Mother and Aunt began to take over more and more of my life and time. In this trying time, I wanted and needed was a way to provide them with home care (I promised I would never put them in a nursing or old age home and they would stay in the home till the end). After searching I found a way to do IT! They did, Stay in the home that they loved until the end… with compassionate caring attendants, we selected and with all the nursing care they needed. The other challenge was to do all this while protecting their hard earned assets of a home, and savings, and other assets from retirement and pensions earned over a lifetime of work and protect those savings from government claw backs.

And we didn’t have five years to wait it out. No, the need was then not down the road. I found a good solid legal way out for us and I can help you do the same for your family. In the end, they had compassionate care with people we chose, who were paid a salary, who got vacation pay, health insurance and other benefits, all paid for by Uncle Sam. And there was no five years “lookback”, as with certified nursing homes, only thirty (30) days from setting up the plan for qualified home care. As a lawyer dealing in Elder Law and Trusts and Estates, let me help you to find the way out of your woods for your elders and your family. It’s Your Life. Treat Your Diabetes Well. Healthcare News - Westchester November, 2016

PAGE 33

• Amputations: This means you could lose a foot or leg. Diabetes causes damage to blood vessels and nerves, particularly in the feet, and can lead to serious, hard-to-treat infections. Amputation may be necessary to keep the infection from spreading.

But good blood sugar control can help you avoid or delay these serious health complications, and treating complications as soon as possible can help prevent them from getting worse.

Source:www.cdc.gov/features/livingwithdiabetes/

November is National Diabetes Month. Make it your time to take charge of your type 1 or type 2 diabetes for a longer, healthier life. Preventive care for people with diabetes—and for the risk factors that cause related health problems—has improved significantly over the past 20 years, and people are living longer and better with the disease. But living longer can mean having other health problems longer, too. Good management over a lifetime is the key, starting with the day you're told you have diabetes. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant). With type 1 diabetes, your body can't make insulin, so you need to take insulin every day. Type 1 diabetes is less common than type 2 diabetes; about 5% of the people who have diabetes have type 1. Currently, no one knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes.

You've Been Diagnosed with Diabetes. Now What? Learning how to take care of your type 2 diabetes shouldn't happen only when you're diagnosed; it should be a lifelong focus. And as you get older, your treatment may need to change. Managing diabetes from the beginning can mean fewer health problems later on. It's a balancing act—food, activity, medicine, and blood sugar levels— but one you can master. Manage your diabetes throughout the day by • Following a healthy eating plan, including eating more fruits and vegetables and less sugar and salt. • Getting physically active—10 to 20 minutes a day is better than only an hour once a week. • Taking diabetes medicine as prescribed by your doctor.

• Testing your blood sugar regularly to understand and track how food, activity, and medicine affect your blood sugar levels.

Prevent Complications People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for serious health complications, including • Heart disease and stroke: People with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke, and at an earlier age. • Blindness and eye problems: Diabetic retinopathy (damage to blood vessels in the retina), cataract (clouding of the lens), and glaucoma (increase in fluid pressure in the eye) can all result in vision loss. • Kidney disease: High blood sugar levels can damage the kidneys over time, long before you start to feel bad.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”

At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has alof ready helps thousands herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
