Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”
THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.
Dr. Gregory Galano MD, Orthopedic Surgeon White Plains and New York, NY
As a board-certified sports medicine orthopedist, I see many patients with activity-related joint, back, and neck pain. Often I am confronted with patients that have exhausted other conservative forms of treatment, but fail to have lasting relief. Many of these patients would like to avoid surgery or may not even be good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr. Donath has proved extremely helpful to this patient population. He spends a great deal of time listening and examining the patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan. He offers innovative treatment options which include chiropractic, active release therapy, Graston technique, non-operative spinal decompression, and even exercise and nutrition programs. Having shared many patients with Dr. Donath, I have seen firsthand the positive interventions he has made in their daily lives and activities. They express the utmost respect and confidence in his clinical evaluation and knowledge, as well as his treatment techniques. I have no reservations recommending him highly to any patient I think may benefit from his services. Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY
“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”
Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

Understanding Breast Cancer—Symptoms PAGE 4
October, 2016
In its early stages, breast cancer usually has no symptoms. As a tumor develops, you may note the following signs:
Healthcare News - Westchester
Warning Signs of Breast Cancer
• A lump in the breast or underarm that persists after your menstrual cycle. This is often the first appar• ent symptom of breast cancer. Lumps associated with breast cancer are usually painless, some may cause a prickly sensation. Lumps are usually visible on a mammogram long before they can be seen or felt. • Swelling in the armpit.
• Pain or tenderness in the breast. Although lumps are usually pain• less, pain or tenderness can be a sign of breast cancer. • A noticeable flattening or indentation on the breast, which may • indicate a tumor that cannot be seen or felt. • Any change in the size, contour, • texture, or temperature of the breast. A reddish, pitted surface like the skin of an orange could be a sign of advanced breast cancer.
• A change in the nipple, such as • a nipple retraction, dimpling, itching, a burning sensation, or ulceration. A scaly rash of the nipple is symptomatic of Paget’s disease, which may be associated with an underlying breast cancer.
• Unusual discharge from the nipple • that may be clear, bloody, or another color. It's usually caused by benign conditions but could be due to cancer in some cases. • A marble-like area under the skin. • • An area that is distinctly different • from any other area on either breast.
Many of the symptoms of breast cancer can also be symptoms of something else. Only your doctor can tell for sure. If you have any of these, make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor will do tests to find out the cause. He or she can give you
the “all clear” or help you start treatment if the tests show you have cancer. Most breast lumps are not cancer. But if your doctor believes it is, it’s best to start treatment right away.

OUR VIEW
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you might know, the color pink has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With that in mind, Healthcare News has a request for our readers: If you don’t own an item of pink clothing, go out and purchase something pink. According to Cancer.org, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Here in Westchester County, our families, our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters have been affected by the disease. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a special time for to promote breast cancer awareness and provide information on the disease. Established in 1985, this awareness month, now an international health observance, has from the start aimed to promote a mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. Most of us have been touched by breast cancer in some way. So it’s time for you to be pretty, or handsome, in pink. Even better, you don’t have to wear your pink garb only in October. Sport it all year to support the wonderful cause. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved. Please feel free to contact me with you thoughts and suggestions at Jim@HealthcareNewsMagazine.com or 845-202-4737.

Simone Development, Fareri Associates add Pharmacy to serve growing Medical Roster at Purchase Professional Park PAGE 8
October, 2016
Simone Development Companies’ and Fareri Associates have announced that ABC Drugs, a New York City-based pharmacy, has leased space for a new medicine only pharmacy at 3010 Westchester Avenue in the Purchase Professional Park in Purchase, NY. The new outlet is designed to serve the needs of the office park’s growing medical tenant base and other doctors’ offices along the I-287 corridor, where health care tenants have dominated commercial leasing activity over the past several years. Glenn Walsh of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank is the exclusive leasing agent for Purchase Professional Park and the tenant’s broker was Alfredo Pujols of WAP Realty Group, Inc. The new pharmacy will be ABC Drugs fourth location and first in Westchester County. “Ownership specifically searched for a tenant to meet the needs of our medical tenants and their patients. We are extremely pleased to welcome ABC Drugs to Purchase Professional Park as yet another amenity for our health care and corporate tenants, as well as the surrounding community,” said Patricia Simone, president of Simone Management Group. “Unlike national drug store chains, ABC Drugs will focus exclusively on the dispensing of prescription drugs and other medicines in this 805 square-foot location. ABC Drugs is a full-service pharmacy with a strong commitment to delivering outstanding customer care. They are dedicated to efficiency and affordability by which they carry-out prescription services, pharmacist consultations and medication therapy management solutions.” ABC Drugs differs from chain drug stores through its attention to the patient's needs as an individual and not just a customer. This special one-to-one relationship with the pharmacist is an important factor in treating the individual as part of the ABC Drugs family. For patients taking more than few meds a day, ABC Drugs offers pre-packed, properly labeled weekly blister packs which offer them ease of medication adherence, a free service that conventional pharmacies do not offer. Their relationship with patients is long-term. Their staff assesses patient profiles on each visit and are always there to offer them answers for any healthcare related questions. At ABC Drugs, patients have personal access to pharmacists and professional staff in a holistic health approach to their wellbeing.

Why breast cancer survivors should exercise
Moderate physical activity can ease stress that impairs memory, study suggests
Excessive stress can lead to memory problems among breast cancer survivors, but exercise can help, according to new research. “We found moderate to vigorous physical activity actually benefits women psychologically and that, in turn, helps their memory,” said the study's lead author, Siobhan Phillips. She is assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Post-cancer memory issues are often attributed to chemotherapy or radiation treatments, known as “chemo brain.”
However, the new study findings suggest “these self-reported memory problems may be in part emotionally related,” Phillips said in a university news release. “These women are frightened, stressed, fatigued, tapped out emotionally and have low self-confidence, which can be very mentally taxing and can lead to perceived memory problems,” she explained. For the study, the researchers examined self-reported memory and exercise data collected from more than 1,800 breast cancer survivors, 362 of whom wore devices called “accelerometers” to track their movement.
In both groups, moderate or vigorous physical activity -- such as brisk walking, biking, jogging or engaging in exercise classes -- was found to reduce stress and fatigue. This has psychological benefits and leads to better memory, the researchers said. While the study didn't establish a direct causeand-effect relationship, greater levels of physical activity were also linked to higher levels of selfconfidence and less distress. These improvements were also associated with fewer perceived memory problems, the study authors added. The findings were published July 8 in Psycho-Oncology.

Susan G. Komen® praises new insights into personalized treatment for breast cancer

Komen-funded study reveals which patients will benefit most from chemotherapy
Susan G. Komen recently hailed new findings, published in The New England Journal of Medicine and supported by Komen funding, which could help some women safely avoid chemotherapy without impacting survival. Using the 70-gene signature test (MammaPrint), collaborators throughout the United States and Europe identified whether women were at high or low clinical and genomic risk of metastasis, and used this information to determine whether the patients would receive chemotherapy. The women with early-stage breast cancer who were identified as being at high clinical risk but low genomic risk of metastasis would typically receive chemotherapy as part of their treatment. However, researchers found that foregoing chemotherapy did not significantly impact survival in this group. “Findings from this study can provide women and physicians with an incredible tool to make informed treatment decisions – particularly with regard to those therapies that can result in life-altering side effects, like chemotherapy,” said Komen President and CEO Judy Salerno, M.D., M.S. “By expanding our knowledge of the role of tumor genetics, we are taking another step forward in ensuring that patients receive the best and most appropriate care for their individual needs.” According to study authors, the findings suggest up to 46 percent of women with breast cancer who are at high clinical risk might not require chemotherapy. Read more in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Since its founding in 1982, Komen has invested more than $889 million into breast cancer research, including more than $290 million into 400 research grants and 90 clinical trials focused on precision medicine.

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates
Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.
“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

Burke
hosts 37th Annual Wheelchair Games
Spirit of inclusion drives community event On Sept. 24, 2016, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will hold its 37th annual Wheelchair Games, a much-anticipated event for wheelchair athletes as well as friends, families, and the community. When it was introduced nearly four decades ago, the event was one of the first of its kind—and today the Wheelchair Games is still known for its spirit of inclusion, welcoming wheelchair athletes of all ages and abilities. Burke’s beautiful 61-acre campus (785 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains) in the heart of Westchester County is the ideal setting for a day that exemplifies sportsmanship, camaraderie, and resilience. The Wheelchair Games provides disabled competitors with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability in a variety of track, field, and table tennis events. It empowers participants to build strength, coordination, endurance and selfconfidence by being active and competitive in an entirely supportive atmosphere. “Although our annual Wheelchair Games are a competition, we emphasize camaraderie, encouragement, and inclusion for participants of all ability levels,” says Richard Sgaglio, Ph.D., senior administrator at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. “It’s also an unforgettable experience for children and other members of the community to be inspired by the tenacity of the athletes.”
The Wheelchair Games competitive categories include a Futures Division (six and under), a separate Junior Division, Adult and separate Masters levels at age 35 and older, age 50 and older, and the senior Masters division at age 60+. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., there will be field events, table tennis, and a slalom (obstacle) course. Track events start at 1:30 p.m. A new development is that this year Burke is adding precision toss and high toss field events open to the following classes: F31, F32, and F51. Morning event winners will be awarded during lunchtime, track event winners will be awarded after all races have been completed. According to Wheelchair Games co-chair Tracey Bogart, “We are proud to have such a longstanding tradition of hosting these games at Burke for such a diverse group of athletes. This event is an exciting follow-up to the Summer Paralympics because it demonstrates the indomitable nature of wheelchair athletes and the wide range of physical activities they participate in.” The regular registration fee is $25 and includes an event t-shirt, lunch and a goodie bag. Financial assistance is available for those who cannot afford the fee—and all athletes are encouraged to participate.
Admission is free for spectators and the public is encouraged to attend. In addition to watching the exciting sports competitions, the Wheelchair Games will feature carnival games, musical entertainment, and raffles. The event is produced entirely by volunteers, including Burke employees as well as community members from civic groups, schools, religious organizations, and other associations. Registration forms for both athletes and volunteers can be found at: www.Burke.org/wheelchair-games. For further information about the Games, please call (914) 597-2850. 4 Smile Tips
October is National Dental Hygiene Month October brings us a few reasons to celebrate and help spread some dental health awareness – its National Dental Hygiene Month! According to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association website, October 2016 marks the seventh straight year that the ADHA and the William Wrigley Jr. Company are teaming together during National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM). The ADHA and the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) are working collaboratively to increase public awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral health. The “Do The Daily 4” message the NDHM & WOHP are focusing on spreading in 2016 involves the four most important components of preventative oral health maintenance:
Do The Daily 4 – Brush, Floss, Rinse, Chew
1. Brush 2x a Day, for 2 Minutes Optimal oral health in National Dental Hygiene month and beyond starts with the toothbrush. One of the most important things we can do is to brush our teeth for two minutes, in the morning & at night before we go to bed. Proper brushing reduces sticky-icky plaque, prevents tooth decay, and helps limit the onset of gum disease.
2. Floss DAILY Daily flossing is so important because your toothbrush doesn’t reach the spaces between your teeth, and using dental floss (or interdental brushes) are the best ways to remove any remaining food particles and plaque to prevent cavities & gum disease.
Your oral health is connected to your overall health, so skipping the daily flossing can actually make you more susceptible to infection, and other overall health issues like diabetes, stroke, heart disease, & prenatal complications – among others. Tooth decay & gum disease are 100% preventable!!
3. Daily Rinsing with Mouthwash Not only does a daily dose of mouthwash help reduce bad breath, but rinsing is another important step you can take to prevent gum disease (gingivitis). Our teeth really only account for less than half of your mouth, so make sure to put a bow on your preventative dental health regimen each day but swishing with some mouthwash.
4. Chewing Sugar-Free Gum Maybe you just powered down a colossal cheeseburger watching your favorite sports team, or perhaps that pistachio ice cream cone didn’t stand a chance, chewing gum after eating is a great way to give your teeth & gums a little on-the-go love. The action of chewing sugar-free gum stimulates the most important natural defense against tooth decay — saliva — which in turn helps fight cavities, neutralizes plaque acids, remineralizes enamel to strengthen teeth and washes away food particles.
Why is preventative oral health maintenance so important? Because if we all absorb the message of a diligent daily dental health regimen we can reduce things like kids tooth decay – about 40% of children have tooth decay by age 5, which causes more than 51 million school hours to be lost each year due to dental-related illnesses.

Oral Health Challenge: 5 tricks for dealing with Halloween treats
PAGE 25
Healthcare News - Westchester October, 2016
4 Use Disclosing Tablets, Swabs, or Solution Some dentists use ''disclosing tablets” to spot bacterial plaque on teeth. These chewable tablets temporarily stain the plaque that builds up on teeth. Parents can also use disclosing tablets, solution, or swabs to show children how well they are brushing or flossing their teeth -- especially if they already have a cavity or two.
5 Keep Teeth Brushing Fun You should replace toothbrushes every three or four months anyway, so make Halloween an occasion for getting your child a new brush. Dentists say that when children like the toothbrushes, they are more apt to enjoy brushing. Children can choose from a variety of kid-sized brushes that feature cartoon characters and colorful designs. Young children typically can't wait to use a new toothbrush.

Top Pediatric Dentist in Westchester 5 years and counting! Children’s Halloween dream -- to get lots of candy -- can be their parents’ nightmare. But pediatric dental experts say Halloween can be a time to teach your children good oral health habits for life, without depriving them of Halloween treats (think moderation). Here are their five best tricks for healthy teeth.
1. Halloween Candy vs. Cavities: Don’t Make Kids Choose After your children get back from trick-or-treating or a party, go through their bags of Halloween candy together. Tell them to each pick the 10 or so (whatever number you decide, based on factors such as age) treats they want the most. Letting children help decide what is a reasonable amount of candy to keep has benefits beyond good oral health. The message isn't "candy is bad," but that candy and other sweets, in excess, can lead to cavities.
2. Set a Treat Time With your child, set a time of day to eat Halloween candy. This ritual “treat time” may last long after Halloween and help promote healthy thinking about treats:
3. Set Up a Teeth Brushing Schedule No matter when treat time is, it's crucial to brush soon after. If it is nighttime, for example, brushing and flossing teeth before bed will help sweep away the recent sweets. Fluoride mouth rinses for kids also help prevent tooth decay, according to the American Dental Association.
• Child-friendly environment and caring staff • Physically and emotionally challenged children welcome • State-of-the-art technology and sterilization techniques • New Laser Technology—Now Your kids CAN have their cavities fixed without an injection, without pain and without a numb lip afterwards!

“The Future is a Bright One” as Music Conservatory appoints new Dean PAGE 28
October, 2016
Music Conservatory of Westchester, a notfor-profit community music school in White Plains, has appointed Douglas Bish as their new Dean of Students & Faculty. Dr. Bish, who returns to the Conservatory after serving on the Conservatory’s faculty from 2006-2011, has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as an academic leader, conductor, clarinetist, educator, author, lecturer, and music clinician. “The Conservatory is one of the truly iconic institutions for community music education in the country, and I’m thrilled to be able to play a part in guiding its future,” Dr. Bish said. Jean Newton, the Conservatory’s executive director, said Dr. Bish was selected among a pool of worthy applicants, because of his extensive background and proven leadership. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment in the school’s history, as it makes plans to expand its programming and develop new studios for technology-based classes. A grant from the New York State Council on the Arts is currently supporting design development for 3,500 square feet of unfinished space in the Conservatory’s White Plains building. Dr. Bish will play a key role in crafting a strategic plan to set goals for the next four years, culminating in the school’s 90th anniversary year in 2019-2020. “I can’t imagine anyone better than Doug Bish to be a partner in steering the Conservatory into the future,” said Newton, who resides in Edgemont. “Doug has it all – he’s a real leader, a consummate musician and educator whose expertise ranges from early childhood education to post-graduate training.” Most recently, Dr. Bish was Dean of the School of Fine, Applied and Communication Arts at the City College of San Francisco. Previously, he served as Chair of the Department of Music for the Nyack Public Schools. He has conducted professional, amateur, and student orchestras and wind ensembles around the world. He holds a master’s degree in clarinet performance and music education from the University of Oregon, and a doctoral degree in music education and conducting from Boston University. As a Fulbright Scholar, he earned an Artist Diploma in clarinet performance from the Vienna Music Academy.

“In addition to our traditional private lesson and ensemble programs, Suzuki training, musical theatre and opera, and the work the Conservatory does in music therapy and providing needed music instruction to our veterans, I’m excited to be able to help the school develop new programs in jazz, cutting-edge instruction in music technology, performance opportunities throughout the county to showcase our talented students, and other new directions in arts education that will expand the school’s reach and importance throughout the New York Metropolitan area,” explained Dr. Bish, a former Hawthorne resident who lives in Beacon, NY with his wife, Kathy Sireno, a public school music teacher and professional flutist. Dr. Bish also said he’s looking forward to providing opportunities for his colleagues teaching music in the public schools to have a “home for their own advanced training in new pedagogies and materials” that they can bring to their students.
Music Conservatory of Westchester is located at 216 Central Avenue in White Plains. The community music school was founded in 1929 in the American settlement house tradition of broad-based access and community service. Today, the institution provides quality music education for all ages, abilities and backgrounds, with one-on-one instruction, performing ensembles, theory, composition, early childhood classes, lifelong learning for adults, and free community performances. Their esteemed faculty, artists in their own right, help to enrich the lives of more than 2,500 students each year from four months to over 80 years. Their Scholarship Program for low-income students, and its Music Therapy program for individuals with disabilities ensure access for all. The Conservatory is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Performing Arts Schools, a division of NASM, and is a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

National Chiropractic Health Month
NCHM 2016 will highlight Chiropractic as a first line of defense against musculoskeletal pain During National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) 2016 this October, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) will build on its ongoing efforts to raise public awareness of the value of a conservative approach to pain management in the face of the U.S. opioid epidemic with the theme and hashtag “#Chiropractic1st. With government agencies, respected health organizations and the media beginning to recognize and promote the use of nonpharmacologic options for chronic pain, it’s important for healthcare consumers to understand that chiropractic services are an important first line of defense against pain and may in some cases lessen or eliminate the need for over-the-counter and prescription painkillers. National Chiropractic Health Month is a nationwide observance held annually in October. The event helps to raise public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic care and its natural, whole-person, patient-centered and drug-free approach to health and wellness. NCHM strives to educate consumers about the benefits of chiropractic services and to promote the expertise of doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in helping patients reach optimal levels of health and wellness.
In honor of this year's National Chiropractic Health Month's theme, here's a list of treatments that can lessen or eliminate the need for over-thecounter and prescription painkillers.:
Chiropractic care Chiropractors are health professionals that rely on a variety of manual therapies, including spinal
manipulation, mobilization, and adjunctive therapies like cold laser therapy, to improve function and provide pain relief for patients.
Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that uses hair-thin metallic needles to stimulate the nervous system and relieve pain for some people.
Patients respond to acupuncture differently, and there are some important guidelines to consider before you try this therapy.
Pneumatic vests Patients who experience pain in the lower back and/or legs during prolonged weight-bearing activities such as walking or standing may benefit from wearing a pneumatic vest. Pneumatic vests are custom-made, and they help take pressure off of the lower spine.
The Alexander technique The Alexander technique is a series of educational lessons designed to help patients become more aware of the mind-body connection. The theory behind the technique is that normal wear and tear on the muscles and ligaments in the body can lead to pain. The goal is to teach patients how to conduct everyday activities like walking, standing, and sitting in a way that minimizes the effects of tension on the body.

Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless By Dale McKnight Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter. And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize. “August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester. Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns. She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services. Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia). She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health. A member of the American Hair Loss Council, Diane also completed the first-ever Certified Hair Coach program in the U.S., based on a training process launched by Dr. Bauman. “Studying and educating others about the scalp has always been my passion,” she says. “My motto is: ‘A healthy scalp is a landscape to healthy hair.’” She adds: “People know that taking care of their gums is important for healthy teeth. It’s the same for the scalp – for healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp.” With a simple scalp analysis, she can determine the overall health of the scalp, and recommend a customized treatment to help each client look and feel their best. What triggers hair problems? “Some causes are genetic,” she says. “And most people don’t know that hereditary hair loss is manageable. The sooner you address it, the better the results.” She adds: “Other factors like chemicals and products we put on our hair, chlorine from pools, allergies to certain substances, or the environment can also play a role. Each client’s case is different, which is what makes my work so interesting.”
When treating clients, Diane uses various patented hair care products, therapeutic scalp massage and, in some cases, a series of FDA-cleared laser therapy treatments to stimulate hair growth. “Low-light laser therapy is good for certain scalp conditions such as some types of dermatitis and early stages of thinning hair,” notes Diane, who underwent special training to use the instruments. “It can help increase density and rejuvenate hair. It’s not a magic wand that magically regrows a full head of hair, but it makes a noticeable improvement in many cases.” Starting treatment for hair problems sooner rather than later will increase the chances of better results, she adds. “Restoring your hair can have an amazing effect on your life. From boosting your confidence to increasing your attractiveness, you’ll experience a world of difference when you do.” Diane can be reached at 914-222-0731.

Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center holds beam signing ceremony for 32-bed ventilator expansion project On Wednesday, August 10, 2016, the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center held a celebratory beam signing of the last steel beam that will be installed as part of its 32-bed ventilator expansion. The occasion comes only a few short months since construction commenced on March 17, 2016 and since they ceremoniously broke ground on the project on November 15, 2015. Residents of the Pediatric Center, staff members and Board Members from across our entire Continuum of Care at the Pediatric Center, the John A. Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center took part in leaving their mark on the beam. “The enthusiasm during this event was palpable,” said Nancy Bullock, Chief Operating Officer. “We are so very proud of this project and the immense impact that it will soon have on the lives of ventilator-dependent children and their families here in New York.”
The Pediatric Center was first in New York State to develop a longterm program for children who are dependent on ventilators and they have spent a decade honing their practice to set the standard for how this care should be delivered. Right now, they are able to care for 18 ventilator-dependent children. However, with this expansion, they will soon nearly triple this number. In fact, this $24 million, three-story addition will make the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center the largest provider of pediatric ventilator care in the State. The Pediatric Center will be able to care for a total of 50 ventilator-dependent children, bringing the total number of children it serves to 169, and the John A. Coleman School, which serves the residents of the Pediatric Center in Yonkers, will add more classrooms to educate these 32 new residents.
The project is slated to be complete and move-in ready by mid-2017. Learn more about the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center at www.setonpediatric.org and find us on Facebook at facebook.com/setonpediatric.

Lost in the woods about home care for your loved ones? PAGE 34

Healthcare News - Westchester
By Olga Berde Mahl, P.C.
This meant a great deal to me for my Mom and Aunt. How to provide compassionate and competent home care for my aging Mother and Aunt began to take over more and more of my life and time. In this trying time, I wanted and needed was a way to provide them with home care (I promised I would never put them in a nursing or old age home and they would stay in the home till the end). After searching I found a way to do IT! They did, Stay in the home that they loved until the end… with compassionate caring attendants, we selected and with all the nursing care they needed. The other challenge was to do all this while protecting their hard earned assets of a home, and savings, and other assets from retirement and pensions earned over a lifetime of work and protect those savings from government claw backs.
And we didn’t have five years to wait it out. No, the need was then not down the road. I found a good solid legal way out for us and I can help you do the same for your family. In the end, they had compassionate care with people we chose, who were paid a salary, who got vacation pay, health insurance and other benefits, all paid for by Uncle Sam. And there was no five years “lookback”, as with certified nursing homes, only thirty (30) days from setting up the plan for qualified home care. As a lawyer dealing in Elder Law and Trusts and Estates, let me help you to find the way out of your woods for your elders and your family. Superior Returns and No Market Risk with a Fixed Indexed Annuity By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC
People are always looking for the perfect investment. Clients want to earn the highest interest possible without putting any of their money at risk. These sorts of investments have never existed … until now. A Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA) is a guaranteed insurance product that offers above average returns with no market risk to principal and no management fees ever1.
In this historically low interest rate environment, many clients are reconsidering where to park their hard earned cash for the long haul. Certificates of deposit, savings accounts and money markets are literally paying next to nothing and the stock market is at the highest levels in recorded history. So where can clients position their money and earn superior returns without worrying about losing a penny? FIAs offer real double digit returns in up markets without any risk to principal in down markets. Folks everywhere are not only taking notice, but investors are flocking to FIAs.
A s k
So how does a FIA actually work? The annuitant buys a traditional guaranteed fixed annuity that also allows him or her to participate in an external index via the carrier’s trading desk. The carrier purchases options against the index either monthly or annually. When the index is up, the options are exercised and the annuitant earns interest, usually subject to a cap. When the index is down during the same time period, the options are allowed to expire and the annuitant is credited the contract’s minimum guarantee of 1%.
A n
Fixed Indexed Annuities offer clients the following 12 guarantees:
E x p e r t
So let’s review, when the market index goes up, the annuitant has the ability to earn superior interest and when the market index goes down, the annuitant earns 1%. Further, since the carrier is only tracking the index on a 12 month basis, annuitants do not need to worry about current market levels. Policies are only capturing gains in the next 12 month period. There is never any risk of principal or of losing any prior year credits which are all automatically reset into the policy accumulation value on the policy anniversary. 123456789101112-
100% Principal Guarantee 100% Participation in S&P 500 Index 100% Guaranteed Fixed Interest Rate Option 2% Premium Bonus on first three (3) years of deposits 1% Minimum Annual Guarantee No Sales Charges or Asset Management Fees ever No Taxes are due until distributions are taken Annual Reset Feature credits all interest into principal annually Access to 10% of your principal annually Loans available up to $50,000 in non-qualified accounts Death Benefits bypass probate Income options you cannot outlive2
Over the last 15 years, we have seen scores of clients earn double digit returns in bull markets, while losing nothing during market downturns. Time and time again, clients are astounded by how they can earn so much interest with no market risk. Here are a few actual client examples. One of our 76 year old clients earned 11.47% from May 2013 through May 2014. Another 58 year old client earned 15.63% from September 2013 through September 2014. Finally, one of our clients actually earned 17.67% from March 2014 through March 2015 inside her inherited IRA and did not even know it.3
There are few products that offer returns like this with a 100% principal guarantee. Do you own a Fixed Indexed Annuity?

CPW’s Sensory Room
PAGE 39
Healthcare News - Westchester October, 2016
Cerebral Palsy of Westchester is excited to announce the recent completion of our sensory room at our main location in Rye Brook. The sensory room is a separate, controlled space that provides a responsive and predictable environment. It was created to improve the development of thought, intelligence and social skills while providing a relaxing space of security and calmness. For people with profound or multiple disabilities, this room is a way to kick start sensory engagement and motivate them to want to engage in sensory experiences. The success of the space depends on how it’s used with the profound knowledge of each of the individual’s needs and desires. Our adults and children have the opportunity to explore freely while having fun! Time spent in a sensory room has been shown to increase concentration, focus attention, improve alertness, awaken memories, and to improve mobilization, creativity, social relations and communications, and general awareness of the surrounding world. The varied optical, acoustic, and tactile stimuli help hyperactive individuals concentrate and focus better.
Our sensory room was brought together by a great partnership with Enabling Devices. Enabling Devices is a company dedicated to developing affordable learning and assistive devices to help people of all ages with disabling conditions. With the help of our OT & PT staff, Enabling Devices designed the layout of the room and installed all of the pieces.

October is National Physical Therapy Month PAGE 41
Healthcare News - Westchester October, 2016
How does your PT celebrate National Physical Therapy Month? Clinics may hold special events like posture screenings, balance assessments, or fun runs to get the community involved in fitness and exercise. National Physical Therapy Month is a wonderful opportunity for physical therapists to educate the public about
National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated each October. The goal of the month long celebration is to raise awareness of the important role that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants play in helping people decrease pain, improve mobility, and engage in healthy lifestyles.
The History of National Physical Therapy Month Initially, National Physical Therapy Week was celebrated each June starting in 1981. In 1992, the week was moved to October so as to not conflict with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) national conference in June. It was then declared that the entire month of October would be designated National Physical Therapy Month. National Physical Therapy Month is a recognized observance on the National Health Observances Calendar.
National Physical Therapy Month Themes Each year, the APTA selects a theme to be the main focus of National Physical Therapy Month. While all aspects of physical therapy are celebrated each October, specific emphasis is placed on the theme for the month long celebration. Past themes have focused on many physical therapy specialties
including low back pain, posture, balance, fitness and obesity, and sports injury prevention. In 2015, the APTA celebrated National Physical Therapy Month with an Age Well campaign. This campaign, with the hashtag #agewell, highlighted the ways your physical therapist can help you remain happy and healthy throughout the lifespan, with a special focus on those people over the age of 50 years. Typically, the theme for National Physical Therapy Month is announced in the late summer, and pre-kick off activites are planned for late September to start to get PTs excited about the events of the month.
How is National Physical Therapy Month Celebrated? If you have been a physical therapy patient during the month of October, there is a good chance that the clinic you went to was celebrating National Physical Therapy Month. Often, staff members wear shirts with the APTA logo, and many times small gifts are given to patients promoting the month. During National Physical Therapy Month physical therapists are encouraged to engage their communities in activities to promote healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy.
the role that P.T.'s play in helping to manage pain, improve mobility, and restore function. Be sure to visit your local physical therapist in October to see what he or she may have planned for National Physical Therapy Month.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature
After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”
At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has alof ready helps thousands herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes!
