“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”

At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our readers! We are celebrating mothers, sisters, aunts, friends and kids everywhere on May 8. Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. In 1907, Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia native, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and her supporters wrote to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful. By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Of course, some of the most special moms in the world live right here in Westchester County, from White Plains, to Rye, to Scarsdale, to Pelham. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you from the staff at Healthcare News. HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley becomes the latest member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

The Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) and HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley (HealthAlliance) recently announced an important agreement that will enhance and expand healthcare for an entire region, while keeping essential services close to home for those who need them. “We couldn’t be happier with the relationship,” said David Scarpino, President and CEO, HealthAlliance. “It ensures that our community will receive the highest-quality healthcare, locally, now and well into the future. The agreement strengthens HealthAlliance’s existing healthcare offerings while providing new and more advanced services to meet a full range of patient needs. “Furthermore, HealthAlliance and WMCHealth share a vision for an innovative, healthcaredelivery system,” Scarpino continued. “This vision includes the continuation of critical-access and skillednursing services in Margaretville, the development of HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus into a single hospital with sophisticated medical technologies, and the evolution of HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus into a ‘medical village’ concept to bring a variety of much-needed community ambulatory services under one roof.” “Like our recent partnerships with MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie and Bon Secours Charity Health System, which has hospitals in Suffern, Warwick and Port Jervis, this relationship with HealthAlliance furthers WMCHealth’s goal of preserving and improving services in existing Hudson Valley healthcare facilities so local families can benefit from highquality care close to home,” explained Michael

Attending the signing ceremony in Kingston were, seated from left, Michael D. Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health Network and David Scarpino, President and CEO HealthAlliance. Standing from left, Mark Tulis, Vice Chair, Westchester Medical Center Health Network and Thomas Collins, Chairman, HealthAlliance.

D. Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health Network. “HealthAlliance has been — and now will continue to be — a conduit for high-quality care for Ulster and Delaware County residents, and WMCHealth will play an integral role in ensuring the continuation and enhancement of these services.” “Our community can be proud of this relationship, which many people worked long and hard to complete,” said HealthAlliance board Chairman Thomas Collins. “It brings to our hospital system a financially stable, comprehensive health network that’s based in the Hudson Valley. This relationship makes our community hospitals attractive, with WMCHealth’s commitment to bringing the best specialty physicians to our facilities, complementing the excellent doctors already here, and to

making other advancements so HealthAlliance becomes our region’s hospital of choice. We’ll still be known for our convenience and personal touch, but we’ll also be recognized for our high patient satisfaction, awarded for our exceptional clinical outcomes, and privileged to have the finest physicians and employees.” Mitchell C. Hochberg, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Westchester County Health Care Corporation, which operates WMCHealth, said the network is in a strong position to add HealthAlliance to its growing system. “WMCHealth has the clinical, financial and operational experience necessary to help Hudson Valley healthcare organizations thrive. We have collaborated with the Hudson Valley’s community hospitals for more than 30 years and, in recent times, successfully integrated

multiple hospitals and healthcare services — spread across the region — into our network. The Hudson Valley is our home, and we are reshaping healthcare here to ensure the highest quality of care is available nearby for our friends and neighbors.” HealthAlliance is a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, effective immediately. WMCHealth will be the sole corporate member of HealthAlliance and will oversee its hospital operations, as well as operations at other HealthAlliance facilities. Israel noted that New York State recently announced nearly $1.2 billion in healthcare awards for hospitals and health systems in New York. The grant awards are transformational for WMCHealth, with the infusion of $88.8 million for the Kingston campuses and

$24.5 million toward the development of a robust medical village in Port Jervis — all critical to the continued provision of healthcare services for those communities. The evolutions of HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus and HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus are key components of a “Healthy Neighborhood Initiative” collaboration between HealthAlliance and Kingston-area educational institutions, city and county agencies, community organizations and other local healthcare providers.” With a planned renovation and expansion and through collaboration with WMCHealth’s strategic partner and international technology leader Royal Philips, HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus will become one of the Northeast’s most advanced community hospitals. It will provide exceptional surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic services through the use of the world’s most advanced medical technologies while continuing to emphasize patient comfort, safety, efficiency and quality of care. Under the medical village concept, HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus will become an innovative neighborhood focal point for health and human-service needs. There, area residents will benefit from a one-stop, integrated primary care, behavioral health and outpatient destination where HealthAlliance, WMCHealth and community partners will provide the finest conventional and integrative health, wellness and support services. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates

Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.

“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. Gift Ideas for Fit and HealthyMoms A handmade macaroni-covered card was fine when you were in kindergarten, but these days we think Mom deserves something that won’t crumble after a few weeks. Whether your Mama is into cooking, running, yoga, hitting the gym — or just hitting the snooze button — we’ve got great gift ideas for every budget.

For the Amateur Chef Blue Apron Subscription Even the best cooks need a little help every once in a while. Blue Apron delivers pre-measured ingredients and instructions for three fresh, healthy recipes per week. Choose how many people you’re cooking for, then pick either the vegetarian or the meat/seafood option. Wine of the Month Club More into rosé than running? A wine club is a great way to discover the intricacies of wine. Most wine subscription services deliver 12 bottles once every three months — definitely enough for a hearthealthy glass every night. The Wall Street Journal Wine Club and Laithwaites Wine Club are both good options. Herb Garden Kit Spice up cooking with fresh herbs grown right at home. Stop by a home and garden store for a pretty pot, soil, plant food, and herb seeds such as basil, thyme, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and chives. Or, order an all-in-one herb garden kit. Homemade Meal This isn’t the fanciest or most innovative suggestion, but for many mothers, a simple and heartfelt gift is far better than an expensive one. A nice bottle of wine, a delicious home-cooked meal, and plenty of conversation make a great last-minute present. If Mom is the main dinner chef at home, treat her with some precious moments of relaxation while you slave over the hot stove preparing her favorite meal.

For the Domestic Goddess DIY Body Scrub Encourage your mom to take some “me time” every once in a while with a set of homemade bath products. Pantry staples like oatmeal, sugar, and salt exfoliate, while bananas and milk moisturize. Pick a recipe, mix it up, and pour it into a pretty glass bottle for an attractive and useful gift.

Massage or Salon Gift Certificate There’s nothing better than a day at the spa for getting some serious R and R. Book a massage session (or any other relaxing treatment) at a local salon. Getting a massage has been proven to reduce physical pain, boost mood, and fight overall

Personal Training Gift Certificate Don’t get stuck in a rut! Purchase a session with a personal trainer to teach Mom some new moves at the gym. She’ll learn correct technique, challenging routines, and more importantly, how to build build strength (which is essential to maintaining healthy bones, especially for women).

For the Yogi For the Runner Fair Trade Clothing and Equipment Let your mom focus on her practice (and not on a stinky, slippery mat) with eco-friendly yoga equipment. We love the mats and blocks made from sustainable materials like bamboo, cork, jute, and natural rubber from yoga company Hugger Mugger. Well-designed, sustainable threads from prAna or Hyde Yoga will help mom bend and stretch without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction or un-comfy seams. Gift Certificate to Local Studio For a more social yoga experience, gift mom a voucher for a class or personal session at a local yoga studio. She’ll be able to work on technique, learn new poses, and meet like-minded yogis in town.

For the Gym Buff Is mom still schlepping her clothes and sneaks in a falling-apart shopping bag? It’s time for an upgrade. And while you’re at it, choose a bag that does some good for the world while keeping undies out of sight. With the purchase of each Actvyist Gym Bag, Actvyist donates money to funding girls’ sports teams and facilities in Niceragua.

Foam Roller A long stretching and foam rolling session is the icing on the cake of a long, tough run. Foam rolling loosens up tight muscles and helps connective tissue stay healthy and supple. Yurbuds Few things are more annoying than earphones that fall out every few strides. Enter Yurbuds, invented by two active dudes who were sick of dealing with flimsy headphones while training for triathlons and marathons. Yurbuds are guaranteed to stay in, even when the going gets tough.

For the Sleeping Beauty Scented Eye Mask A dark room plus soothing herbs is a recipe for deep, rejuvenating sleep. Hook mom up with a lavender-filled eye mask to let her sleep in. Smelling lavender before bed can help with insomnia. Bonus points for bringing breakfast in bed when she finally wakes up! Fancy PJs Special pajamas (aka not just a scruffy old work t-shirt and sweats) make any night feel special. Splurge on a highquality set made of sustainable materials, like super soft jammies from Gaiam made from bamboo and organic cotton.

For the Zen Mama Gift Certificate for Meditation Class Meditation is much more than sitting with your eyes closed. For someone looking to get into mindfulness meditation, a guided class can be a great introduction. Scope out meditation centers in your area and score a gift card to help mom learn how to relax and reconnect. Aromatherapy Set While studies show that aromatherapy doesn’t always reduce anxiety, sniffing yummy-scented oils can still be a pleasant, comforting experience. If mom is more earth mama than tiger mother, gift her a beginner kit of essential oils. Introduce her to aromatherapy with some aromatherapy bath products or a small set of oils. Tea Notes If your mom’s into her afternoon tea, Tenota tea notes will be right up her alley. Go to the website, pick out a tea, and write out messages for each bag. Every time she grabs a packet of Earl Grey or Peppermint Soother, she’ll see a loving, happy message. Warm and fuzzies all around. source:greatist.com/health/gifts-for-fitand-healthy-moms

Higher Guaranteed Tax-Free Income in this Market By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC

Are you retired and need higher guaranteed income? Has the stock market and world events got you on edge? Traditional cash instruments like Money Markets and Certificates of Deposit are paying next to nothing. If you want to stop worrying about the future and need guaranteed income for life, look no further than positioning some of your money into an Immediate Annuity.

Depending on what magazines you read or who you talk to, you will hear a great deal about the advantages and disadvantages of owning annuities. But frankly speaking, most people do not understand the basic differences between immediate, fixed deferred and variable contracts. The oldest version of an annuity is the Immediate Annuity. Simply put, an Immediate Annuity is an exchange of dollars between an individual and a life insurance company. The individual deposits a lump sum of money in return for a guaranteed lifetime income often with significant tax leverage.

So what does all of this really mean? Let me explain. Suppose you are a 75 year old client with a savings account of $100,000 at a local bank. You are retired and need more income to pay your bills and live your life. So you decide to buy a 5 year CD with the local bank at 1.0% because: 12345-

You are a conservative investor You cannot risk principal You need additional income You do not want to pay fees or sales charges to a broker $1,000 of annual taxable interest is guaranteed

12345-

You are a conservative investor There are no fees or sales charges ever Instead of $1,000 of taxable income, you earn $8,955 of guaranteed income annually for life Moreover, if the deposit was in cash, $7,997 of the $8,955 is tax exempt1 In a 15% or higher tax bracket, the tax equivalent yield is easily over 10% in all years2

Why would you take that same $100,000 and buy an Immediate Annuity:

Because Immediate Annuities are underwritten and issued based upon current age and life expectancy, it is an advantage to purchase them after retirement. So individuals and couples over 70 and even 80 years of age, can negotiate extremely high guaranteed rates of return for life. In today’s historically low interest rate environment, these yields can be up to seven, eight or even ten times higher than what they are getting now in traditional banking instruments.

Client suitability is an essential part of underwriting and clients must have significant excess cash in order to purchase these annuities. The transaction will not be processed by the company if a large portion of the client’s portfolio is being transferred. The professional recommendation is to move positions that can offer tremendous interest & tax leverage for individuals needing guaranteed income with no risk for life. Moreover, Period Certain & Cash Refund riders can offer payment guarantees to heirs either lump sum or for 10, 20 and even 30 years, depending upon the age at issue. This way, in case of premature death, future payments or remaining annuity balances can be paid directly to spouses, children and other beneficiaries.

Going one step further, the client can opt to purchase a permanent life insurance policy for the full replacement value of the Immediate Annuity deposit of $100,000. Using our original example, the 75 year old client would receive $8,955 in annual interest from the Immediate Annuity and then use part of that interest to pay for a $100,000 life insurance policy costing $5,613 annually3. Thus, the client keeps $3,342 after paying the annual premium payment, more than tripling their current guaranteed bank interest for life. At the same time, they are ensuring the original $100,000 gets paid upon death tax-free to their spouse, children and other beneficiaries.

Sound too good to be true? Well, it is and these numbers are real. But the client needs to understand that the original deposit into the Immediate Annuity is an irrevocable transfer to the life insurance company and there is no future access to the original investment. Here again, maximizing guaranteed income needs to be the primary goal of the client’s financial plan, and modest amounts of capital can be contractually guaranteed for a very competitive income for the rest of the client’s life through the use of Immediate Annuities.

Three things to know about Physical Education in New York

The American Heart Association and SHAPE America released 2016 Shape of the Nation on the state of physical education in each state. While each state has a different set of standards for keeping kids active at school, here in New York we know our kids are not exercising as much as they need to stay healthy—and that can affect their hearts and minds. Despite research that shows physical activity improves brain function and student achievement, school systems across the nation have reduced time in the gym learning critical skills and participating in physical education. “Teaching children the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of exercise through physical education is vital to a heart-healthy life,” says Nancy Brown, American Heart Association CEO. “The research is as clear as a school bell that quality time being active also improves kids’ performance in other classes. Getting fit and fitting PE into the school day are non-negotiable.” “We know that prevention is the best way to fight heart disease,” said Bob Elling, chair of the New York State advocacy committee of the American Heart Association. “A robust PE program is the best way to instill healthy habits in children, which they will hopefully carry throughout their lives. Daily PE is also a great way for our children to improve their immediate health.” Shape of the Nation shows how New York is measuring up to national recommendations to keep kids physically active and healthy. The real impact of these findings will be how they influence the health and well-being of our students in ways many parents and schools do not yet realize.

Key Findings in New York Quantity Matters: Kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day and physical education should provide about half of that time in addition to teaching them lifelong skills to be active. The American Heart Association and SHAPE America recommend states require elementary students receive 150 minutes per week and middle and high school students receive 225 minutes per week of instructional physical education. • New York requires just 120 minutes of physical education each week – which is less than 40 minutes a day – for elementary school students. • New York requires just 90 minutes of physical education each week, not less than three times per week in one semester and two times per week in the other, which is less than 20 minutes a day – for middle school/junior high and high school students. Quality Matters: A range of factors improve the quality and effectiveness of a physical education program – from training of the teacher to curriculum standards to funding– and this impacts each student’s readiness for a lifetime of fitness and hearthealthy living. National recommendations support state policies for all of these factors to ensure high-quality physical education programs are in every school. • New York law currently only requires certified PE teachers for secondary schools. This short-changes the quality of physical education for our youngest students. It’s time to close that loophole. • New York’s physical education curriculum hasn’t been updated for decades, before many of our current students were even born. The state’s plan must be updated more routinely.

• An increase in dedicated funding for PE improvements is also necessary. Many schools struggle with access to teachers and equipment. Future capital funding can assist with disparate burden to appropriate gym and recreation space.

Equality Matters Shape of the Nation provides our communities with a better understanding of what is expected of schools across our state. In addition to the measures of quantity and quality of our state program, ensuring equality is addressed in our physical education programs will benefit students’ the most. Research shows that active kids learn better, so it is important that all children participate in physical activity every day, regardless of student fitness or ability and regardless of race or gender. Kids shouldn’t miss out on the benefits of physical education just because of their zip code. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes have a greater impact on communities of color, and longstanding racial inequities and socio-economic challenges leave many schools without the resources to provide physical education classes. The benefits of improving the school physical education curricula are

PAGE 27

realized across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, among boys and girls, elementary- and high-school students, and in urban and rural settings. Kids shouldn’t miss out on the benefits of physical education just because of special needs either. Active kids learn better, so it is important that all children participate in physical activity every day, regardless of student fitness or ability. National recommendations include individualized plans for students with disabilities and emphasize that physical education is focused on both physical activity and health education. Limiting access to physical education for specific students has consequences in the day to day academic environment and for their long term well-being. Shape of the Nation is supported nationally by SHAPE America and Voices for Healthy Kids, an initiative of the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The American Heart Association and SHAPE New York are working to protect physical education to ensure our children get the day to day physical activity they need for strong healthy hearts and have the skills and knowledge to prevent chronic disease and be healthy adults. White Plains video company helps doctors tell their story By Dale McKnight Healthcare Correspondent

“Anyone with an iPhone can shoot a short video,” says David Vogel, president and co-founder of the Video SEO Pro company based in White Plains. “But there’s more to a good video than it just being in focus – it’s the story you tell that’s important,” he says. “It needs to be an effective experience for the viewer.” Video SEO Pro makes and markets professional-quality videos for a variety of businesses, including for clients in the healthcare field. “More and more hospitals and medical groups are reaching out to the public with online videos to showcase their services – and to introduce patients to their physicians and staff,” Vogel says. “When a person is searching for a doctor, they often go online to check them out, even if a cer-

tain doctor has been recommended,” says Neco Turkienicz, vice president and co-founder of Video SEO Pro. “You want to choose the right doctor; you want to make sure they have excellent credentials, but it’s hard to know much about them just by reading a bio and looking at their photo online.” That’s where a well-made video can be a bonus in choosing a physician. “In a video, you can get a better sense of who they are as people, about why they be-

came a doctor,” Turkienicz adds. “And testimonials from other patients can be helpful, too.” Video SEO Pro has produced videos for departments of topnotch medical facilities including New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan. “We’ve also created about 40 individual video profiles for physicians in some of the oncology departments at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City,” Vogel says. Videos can also be helpful tools for doctors and healthcare facilities with step-by-step tutorials that show, for instance, the proper way to change a bandage when patients get home. Video SEO Pro’s job doesn’t wrap when the video is finished, Turkienicz points out. “We also help physicians with

SEO, so their services have a prominent place online and come up near the top in Web searches. That’s why ‘SEO’ is in our name – if you have a beautiful website and nobody sees it, it’s not effective.” SEO is short for search engine optimization - the process of improving a website or video’s visibility in online search engine results. That way, when a person does a Web search using specific keywords, the website or video link appears at or near the top of

their search, helping bring more people to the site’s information. Vogel and Turkienicz have more than four decades of combined video production experience; both previously worked with Manhattan advertising agencies, creating national advertising campaigns before they launched Video SEO Pro, Inc. Their team approach includes producing live action and animation for videos, as well as offering spokespeople and testimonial video features – plus creating and optimizing a client’s own YouTube channel. “We love what we do, and it’s rewarding work for us,” says Vogel. Healthy eating to reduce the risk of stroke Healthcare News - Westchester May, 2016

PAGE 31

Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to reduce the risk of stroke and control many health problems. And, a healthy diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, feel your best, have more energy, and handle stress better. These guidelines can help you start enjoying healthy, food, feeling better, and improving your health. For more information about ways to reduce your risk of stroke, visit www.stroke.org. Fruits and vegetables These are packed with key vitamins and nutrients, such as calcium and fiber. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Lean protein When you pledge to eat healthy, it’s okay to enjoy meat. The important thing is to choose lean meat. This includes boneless, skinless chicken breasts and turkey cutlets, and leaner cuts of ground beef. Broil grill, roast, poach, or boil meat instead of frying. Also try to avoid sauces and gravies that are high in fat and sugar.

Seek low-fat dairy options While many dairy products are rich in protein and calcium, they are also high in fat, which can cause cholesterol to build up in arteries increasing the risk for many major health problems.

Drink in moderation Drinking too much alcohol increases blood pressure and the risk of stroke. Aim to drink no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women.

Watch your calories Part of eating healthy means having a healthy weight, which includes not eating more calories than you burn off. Calorie intake is based on gender, age, and activity level.

Plan Vending machines and fast food can be tempting when you’re rushed or stressed. To eat healthy, plan menus ahead of time and keep healthy snacks on hand.

Change your choices Simple changes in how you prepare and ask for food can add up to big changes. Choose grilled fish instead of fried. At a restaurant, choose vegetables as a side instead of French fries.

Stay positive It can take a long time to begin new habits in the way you eat and drink, so go easy on yourself as you’re starting out. Remember that every small change you make in the way you eat adds up to big differences in your overall health.

EMS Week is an opportunity for EMS agencies and healthcare partners such as hospitals and nursing homes, to recognize EMS practitioners for a job well done. Making an effort to thank practitioners will go a long way toward motivating EMTs and Paramedics for the challenges of the year ahead, and inspiring them to strive for their personal best! Here are 5 ways to celebrate EMS practitioners.

1. Recognize a CPR save. Few moments are more meaningful for EMS practitioners than meeting someone whose life they helped to save. Share the story with the media. It will have added power if the person whose life was saved is willing to participate in media interviews.

2. Create an “EMT or Paramedic of the Year” award. Ask for nominations from your crew. Announce your winner during EMS Week and notify the local media. Or, host an awards dinner to recognize the winner and all of your EMS practitioners.

3. Bring in a speaker. Bring in a speaker who will inspire your staff. One year, Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania invited Dr. Comilla Sasson, the attending emergency room physician at University of Colorado Hospital whose ED treated 23 Aurora movie theater shooting victims. Another year, they asked Dr. Leon Sanchez of Beth Israel Medical Center, who spoke about lessons learned from the Boston Marathon bombing.

4. Honor fallen EMS personnel. EMS Week can be a time to remember personnel have died or been killed in the line of duty. One way to honor their sacrifice is through participation in The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride. This year, rides will be held from Boston to Alexandria, Va., in Kentucky, and from Reno, Nev. to San Francisco, coinciding with EMS Week. A fourth ride will be held in Colorado in June. 5. Say thank you. Your EMS organization might not have much in the way of EMS Week budget. So make your celebration a potluck, and don't underestimate the power of a heartfelt “thank you.”

Healthcare News - Westchester May, 2016

May Marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month patient safety, workforce shortage to be addressed The month of May marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), partnering with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) recognizes the devoted professionals whose compassion and dedication to the care of the critically ill and injured has made a significant difference in the lives of patients and their families. At some point in their lives, nearly 80% of all Americans will suffer, or know someone who is suffering, from a life-threatening illness or injury. From heart attack and stroke, to burns and gunshot wounds, every day thousands of people suffer from critical conditions that place their lives in jeopardy. In the rapid pace of the intensive care unit (ICU), each critical care practitioner must quickly obtain

information, effectively convert it into knowledge, and then apply it to the best interests of the patients at the bedside. There are many ways to organize care within the ICU, but data show that optimal care is provided when an integrated team of dedicated experts is present to assess, initiate and adjust treatment to ensure that the best possible care is delivered to all critically ill or injured patients the moment it's needed. The core of this multiprofessional team consists of intensivists (physicians credentialed in critical care medicine), critical care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists. Primary care physicians, physician assistants, social workers, dietitians, ethicists, consultant medical specialists, and other professionals are also often part of the team. During the month of May, the Society of Critical Care Medicine encourages the public to applaud the efforts of the critical care team.

Wear blue on May 13! During the second Friday of the month wear blue to show your support of National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month.

Educate legislators. Join forces with critical care professionals to educate Senators and Representatives on the growing critical care workforce shortage and its implications for the future.

Recognize members of the critical care team. Take a moment to praise the critical care team members and other healthcare workers for their hard work and commitment to caring for a critically ill or injured loved one.

Learn about critical care. Patients and families are often confused about critical care, what critical care practitioners do, and the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. The Society's 10 Patient and Family Brochures are an excellent resource for learning about key issues within the ICU, including end of life, sepsis, pediatric critical illness, hospital safety, and more. These brochures and many educational resources are available at SCCM's Online Bookstore, www.sccm.org/ecommerce. Make a donation. Make a donation to the Critical Care Education and Research Foundation (CCERF) in honor or memory of someone, or designate your donation to a specific patient safety initiative. To view all options, visit www.sccm.org.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine is the leading professional organization dedicated to ensuring excellence and consistency in the practice of critical care medicine. With nearly 13,000 members worldwide, the Society is the only professional organization devoted exclusively to the advancement of multiprofessional intensive care through excellence in patient care, professional education, public education, research and advocacy. Members of the Society include intensivists, critical care nurses, critical care pharmacists, clinical pharmacologists, respiratory care practitioners and other professionals with an interest in critical care, which may include physician assistants, social workers, dieticians, and members of the clergy.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? PAGE 34

May, 2016

Healthcare News - Westchester

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
