After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Six ways to boost women’s health PAGE 4

which is equal to 12 ounces of beer (4.5 percent alcohol); 5 ounces of wine (12.9 percent alcohol); or 1.5 ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as gin or whiskey, 80-proof).
Manage stress No matter what stage of her life — daughter, mother, grandmother — a woman often wears many hats and deals with a lot of pressure and stress. Take a few minutes every day just to relax and get your perspective back again. It doesn’t take long, and mental health is important to your physical well-being.” You also can manage stress with exercise, relaxation techniques, or meditation.
Sun safely Excessive exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause skin cancer, which can be deadly. To protect against skin cancer, wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 if you are going to be outdoors for more than a few minutes. Even if you wear sunscreen faithfully, you should check regularly for signs of skin cancer. Warning signs include any changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of birthmarks, moles, or freckles, or new, enlarging, pigmented, or red skin areas. If you spot any changes or you find you have sores that are not healing, consult your doctor.
Women’s health concerns are a little different from those of men. To look and feel your best at every age, it’s important to make smart lifestyle and health choices. Here are six simple things that woman can do every day (or with regularity) to ensure good health:
Eat a healthy diet You want to eat as close to a natural foods diet as you can. That means a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables —and fewer processed foods. Eat whole grains and high-fiber foods and choose leaner cuts of meat, fish, and poultry. Include low-fat dairy products in your diet as well to help avoid osteoporosis. Avoid foods and beverages that are high in calories, sugar, salt, and fat. Healthy eating will help you maintain a proper weight for your height, which is important because being overweight can lead to a number of illnesses. If you’re not getting enough vitamins and nutrients in your diet, you might want to take a multivitamin and a calcium supplement to make sure you’re maintaining good health. Exercise Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the U.S., but plenty of exercise can help keep your heart healthy. You want to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, if not every day. Aerobic exercises (walking, swimming, jogging, bicycling, dancing) are good for women’s health in general and especially for your heart. Avoid risky behaviors Stay away from cigarettes and people who smoke. Don’t use drugs. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Most women’s health studies show that women can safely consume one drink a day. A drink is considered to be about 12 to 14 grams of alcohol,
Check for breast cancer The American Cancer Society no longer recommends monthly breast self-exams for women. However, it still suggests them as “an option” for women, starting in their 20s. You should be on the lookout for any changes in your breasts and report any concerns to your doctor. All women 40 and older should get a yearly mammogram as a mammogram is the most effective way of detecting cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.

Top 10 healthy - and simple - New Year’s resolutions
PAGE 8
January, 2016
Healthcare News - Westchester
With 2016 just around the corner, many of us are dreaming up how to be happier and healthier in the new year. But don’t think you have to choose a lofty goal. The key to a successful New Year’s resolution is choosing something you’ll stick with. Here are 10 attainable – and effective – healthy-living resolutions to start your year off right.
6. Add meditation: Research shows that meditation can help people give up addictions like cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Meditation has also been found to improve sleep, lower blood pressure, protect against depression and anxiety and increase feelings of happiness.
7. Buy a plant: By adding a living plant to your home or work space, you’ll help purify the air, removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene. Good options for improving air quality include aloe, peace lily, English ivy, bamboo palm, Gerbera daisy, chrysanthemum and spider plants.
8. Be a volunteer: Experts say our well-being increases when we help others. Try volunteering to feed the homeless, offer transportation to the elderly, tutor schoolchildren or donate unneeded clothing and household items.
9. Travel: Travel can help improve well-being. It makes you feel rejuvenated and replenished. It gets you out of your typical scenery, and the effects are revitalizing. It’s another form of discovery and learning, and great for the body and the soul.
3. Make time for tea: A daily cup of green tea can be a powerful health partner. It may improve your cholesterol ratio and help protect against bacterial infections and certain cancers thanks to polyphenols called catechins.
4. Get more sleep: Adequate sleep has a multitude of benefits. It can boost your mood, lessen your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes and strengthen your memory. Although sleep needs vary, most experts agree that adults should get at least seven to nine hours a night. If you find it difficult to get the ZZZs you need, try going to bed earlier or fitting in a regular afternoon nap.
5. Try a new activity: Weight loss one of the most common – and hardest to keep – New Year’s resolutions. Get moving with a fun new activity, like horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, belly dancing or a beginner’s yoga class. The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to keep it up!

2. Snack smarter: Don’t let a bag of chips sabotage your resolve to be healthier this year. Stock your kitchen with healthy options like fresh and dried fruits; raw, unsalted nuts (especially pistachios, cashews and walnuts); and dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa.

1. Get outside: Studies show that spending time outdoors can improve mood and self-esteem, as well as provide vitamin D, which may protect against osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer. Aim to be outside for at least 30 minutes each day.
10. Just breathe: Practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders.

Astorino partners with Latino U to help students go to College Westchester County is partnering with Latino U College Access to help first-generation Hispanic students navigate the complex process of applying for state and federal financial aid for college. The effort is designed to help Hispanic students and their families overcome language and financial barriers to attending college. “We are proud to partner with Latino U on these vital programs for first-generation Hispanic students," said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino. "For every family, the first to go to college is an achievement that has a tremendous impact for future generations to come. With this effort, we are helping students realize the dream of graduating from college.”
Latino U College Access offers several programs, paired with Spanish-language Community Information Sessions, that support Hispanic students and their families who are preparing to go to college, including: Essay Writing Boot Camp, which guides students through the process of writing college essays; SAT/ACT preparation classes; College Coaching and Mentoring, where volunteers work oneon-one to support students with college planning and the application process; and, FAFSA First!, where bilingual volunteers help students complete financial aid applications, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the New York Tuition Assistance Program (NY TAP) application, to help pay for college.
Students who complete the FAFSA could be eligible for Pell grants of up to $5,775 per year and subsidized student loans with no interest while they are enrolled in college. Students who complete the NY TAP form and attend college in New York could
provided
be eligible to receive up to $5,165 per year of state aid in addition to their federal grants. Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, founder of Latino U College Access, said failing to complete a FAFSA is a fundamental barrier to attaining a college degree.
Latino youth, many of whom are first in their family to go to college, have no help completing financial aid forms and lack financial literacy and information about applying for financial aid. “Through our commitment, we are helping to improve the educational attainment of Hispanic youth in Westchester County by supporting their college dreams so that they may fulfill their academic potential and ensure the success of future generations,” Buontempo said. In January 2015, Astorino announced a three-year contract with Latino U College Access as part of the Westchester County Youth Bureau's Invest-In-Kids program. Latino U College Access projects reaching 2,000 families with FAFSA First! over the next three years. For more information, visit www3.westchestergov.com

You must protect your assets, family and future now!
The Importance of Elder Law: For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and
estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”
The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living
will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

Social Worker at Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center honored with LeadingAge New York 2015 Employee of Distinction Award Selena Perez, L.M.S.W., the lead social worker at the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, was honored with a LeadingAge New York 2015 Employee of Distinction Award on November 10, 2015. Daniel Heim, Executive Vice President of LeadingAge New York, presented Perez with her award during a ceremony held at the Pediatric Center on Tuesday afternoon. Perez’s work at the Pediatric Center was lauded by Patricia Tursi, Chief Executive Officer at the Pediatric Center, and Lisa Poskanzer, Vice President of Operations. In addition, a former resident and his mother reflected on the impact that Perez has had on their lives and a current resident performed Rachel Platten’s empowering anthem, “Fight Song,” as a tribute to Perez. The heartfelt recognition was much deserved for Perez, who has worked at the Pediatric Center since 2011.She became department head in July of 2015. “Her loyalty to our residents and their families is no different than the commitment and unconditional love she gives to her own family, expressing empathy and compassion in supporting and guiding their life journal,” said Lisa Poskzaner, the Pediatric Center’s Vice President of Operations.
“Her professional development has been enriched by her selection to participate in the IGNITE Leadership Academy through LeadingAge New York and, while timeconsuming, it has not prevented her volunteerism in every special event held at the Pediatric Center.

Travel
December and the holiday season is a favorite time of year for many people. Yet it can also cause stress as you try to find the perfect gift to get for your loved ones. For any of you that have travelers on your list, here are some suggestions that I think any traveler will love. Wishing you all a very happy holiday season!
Travel Notebook by Story Supply Co - $9.95 Even though we live in a digital age, I still love taking notes on paper. A nice notebook is an essential for me so I can take some notes about my travel observations. It also comes in handy for jotting down what exactly my dinner was so that when I am looking back through my pictures, I remember exactly which kind of pasta and what exact sauce I had that third night in Rome. Story Supply Co carries great pocket notebooks, and as a bonus, when you buy a pack, they donate a supply kit to a child. http://www.storysupplyco.com/collections/notebooks/products/ pocket-staple-notebook Bullet Pencil by Metal Shop - from $37.50 You’ll also need something to write all of your observations in your notebook with. Metal Shop is a local merchant that creates these cool bullet pencils. A pencil is great so you can erase any mistakes, and this one not only is a great writing instrument but it’s almost a better conversation starter. http://metalshopct.com/collections/bullet-pencils
Portable Battery Charger - $21.90 Of course, even though I still love writing with a pencil and paper, I love my iPhone and all of it’s handy apps. What I don’t always love is relying on the battery to last - there is nothing more disappointing than needing your phone to snap a picture of your travels only to find out that the battery is about to die. Instead of trying to find a handy electric outlet to plug in at, having a portable battery charger will let you recharge while you continue with your day. This model by Innogie is almost the same size as an iPhone so it won’t take up much room in your travel bag (or pocket!) http://www.amazon.com/Innogie-6600mah-External-Battery-Smartphones/dp/B00WU4NQT6/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1 448130632&sr=1-3&keywords=portable+charger
Travel Humidifier - $27.99 I find that, especially in the winter months, hotel rooms can have extremely dry air, which is incredibly uncomfortable. For those travelers who also suffer from this, Satechi makes a mini travel humidifier. It attaches to a bottle of water and is powered by usb for instant mist. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J3AX6PO/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ pa_2?pf_rd_p=1944687462&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf rd_i=B00CUQBD12&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1HB76 B7QJSMWC583A4DG
Universal USB Power Charger - $22.99 Most people have more than one electronic device that they travel with, and almost all can be powered by usb. It can sometimes be a challenge to find enough outlets in a hotel room, especially if you are traveling internationally. This charger by Moon Monkey has 6 usb ports so that you can charge your cell phones, tablet and portable battery charger at the same time and even have a port left over to run your travel humidifier. The other thing I love about this model is that it has interchangable plugs so that this one device will work in just about any country in the world. http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Monkey-Motorola-More--goodTravelling/dp/B00HVURUO6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid =1448130524&sr=1-1&keywords=moon+monkey+usb+charger Noise Canceling Headphones - $299.95 Air travel is something that a lot of people dread but is a necessary part of a lot of travel plans. There are precautions that you can take to make it better, one of which is picking a seat location that you will be most comfortable in. Despite that, you don’t have any control of the people who sit around you and the noise that they may cause. However, you can be prepared for this by having a nice pair of noise-canceling headphones. I personally like this pair by Bose the best to block out the noises around me. https://www.bose.com/products/headphones/ over_ear_headphones/quietcomfort-25-acoustic-noisecancelling-headphones-apple-devices.html#v=qc25_black Pashmina Wrap You can’t go wrong with a classic pashmina wrap. Wear it as an accessory to dress up your traveling outfit and then once on the plane, you can use it as a blanket to sleep with. This one from Nordstrom comes in a variety of colors to suit just about anyone. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/nordstrom-woolcashmere-wrap/4020371?origin=keywordsearchpersonalizedsort&contextualcategoryid= 0&fashionColor=Purple+Vintner&resultback=0
December’s tip: Are you traveling with gifts this
holiday season? Although you are allowed to travel with wrapped presents, if the TSA needs to check the gift for any reason, they will unwrap it to do so. It's much better if you are able to travel with unwrapped gifts and do the wrapping when you get to your destination.

Mount Kisco Medical Group to become CareMount Medical
As of February 2016, Mount Kisco Medical Group (MKMG) will change its name to CareMount Medical. The new brand will reflect the group’s growth, which now comprises more than 500 physicians and expert health partners in over 40 locations throughout the Hudson Valley, while honoring its 70 year history. “Thanks to the MKMG team’s great work over the decades, we’ve become a community practice with a regional presence and a national reputation,” said Scott D. Hayworth, MD, President and CEO of MKMG.
“The CareMount name reflects this growth, while honoring our origins and expressing our mission: to provide our patients with the highest standard of care, with the convenience and comfort of being close to home.” While the new CareMount Medical name and visual graphics will be unveiled in February, preparation for the new brand identity is already beginning across the organization. Dr. Hayworth highlighted this initiative will not change any of the services offered to patients.

2016 Higher Limits for HSA Contributions
By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC
The 2016 limits on contribution and out-of-pocket spending amounts for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and for the High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) were increased again this year by the IRS. The IRS provided the inflation-adjusted HSA contribution, HDHP minimum deductible and out-of-pocket limits for 2016. The higher rates reflect the cost-of-living adjustment and rounding rules of Internal Revenue Code section 223.
A comparison of the 2015 and 2016 limits is shown below:
Contribution and Out-of-Pocket Limits for Health Savings Accounts and for High-Deductible Health Plans For 2015
For 2016
HSA contribution limit (employer and/or employee)
Individual: $3,350 Family: $6,650
Individual: $3,350 Family: $6,750
HDHP minimum deductible amounts
Individual: $1,300 Family: $2,600
Individual: $1,300 Family: $2,600
HSA catch-up contributions (age 55 or older)*
HDHP maximum out-of-pocket amounts (deductibles, co-payments and other amounts, but not premiums)
$1,000
Individual: $6,450 Family: $12,900
$1,000
Individual: $6,550 Family: $13,100
* Catch-up contributions can be made any time during the year in which the HSA participant turns 55.
Here are some important points regarding HSAs and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:
HSA penalties for nonqualified expenses
Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the penalty for using HSA funds for nonqualified medical expenses for those under the age of 65 (unless totally and permanently disabled) increased from 10 percent to 20 percent of the funds used for nonqualified expenses. Funds spent for nonqualified purposes also are subject to income tax.
HSAs and coverage of adult children under age 26
While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows parents to add their adult children (up to age 26) to their health plans, the IRS has not changed its definition of a dependent for health savings accounts. This means that an employee whose 24-year-old child is covered on their HSA-qualified high-deductible health plan is not eligible to use HSA funds to pay for medical bills for that 24-year-old.
If account holders can't claim a child as a dependent on their tax returns, then they can't spend HSA dollars on services provided to that child. According to the IRS definition, a dependent is a qualifying child who: • Has same principal place of abode as the covered employee for more than one-half of the taxable year.
• Has not provided over one-half of their own support during the taxable year.
• Is not yet age 19 (or not yet age 24 if a student) at the end of the tax year
• Is permanently and totally disabled.
For more information about Health Savings Accounts, please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free at 877-676-9900. Andrew is certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) from the Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification, Inc. Andrew is a member in good standing of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), which is the premier Association of financial professionals nationally. Andrew’s offices are located at 50 Main Street, White Plains, NY 10606 and at 500 West Putnam Ave, Greenwich CT 06831.

Concept:CARE ® provides specialized care that stands out from the rest
When Concept:CARE®’s president Carol Greenberg talks to clients, they often use the word unique to describe the respected home healthcare operation. “Everyone in the Concept:CARE® family finds gratification in how they assist each individual client…and that in itself is unique. We don’t just go the extra mile. We go the extra three miles.” That is obvious in everything Concept:CARE®, located in White Plains, does. Greenberg’s caring staff passionately treats its patients while working with their family to decide what is actually needed for that client to remain safely and comfortably in their own surroundings. Concept:CARE®’s operational and caregiving staff are some of the most highly regarded in the home healthcare industry. All direct caregivers who provide hands on services are insured, licensed and bonded. Potential Concept:CARE® team members go through a vigorous vetting and interview process. “We ask that our potential employee have a minimum of one year documented experience and provide 4 references to be kept on file.”
“We have high standards for the staff to meet,” said Greenberg, who has 50 years of healthcare administration experience. “Our staff treats patients like they are their own loved ones. We really get to know them.” Concept:CARE® is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Clients and their families have access to registered nurses, client care coordinators and administrators. Together, Greenberg said, Concept:CARE® welcomes a patient and their family to be a part of the healthcare team. Concept:CARE®’s services are diverse and can assist in the discussion of: • Care/Case Management • Therapeutic Interventions • Nursing Facilities • Elder-Care/Long Term Housing: Senior Housing, Assisted Living • State Contract Affiliations: Office for the Aging, NYS Department of Health & Office of the Developmentally Disabled • Medicare, Medicaid, Third Party Insurance
• Long Term Care Insurance • Community Resource • Adult Day Care Programs Among other things, Concept:CARE® prides itself on the fact that specialized services are provided at competitive rates. Case management and initial nursing evaluations are services provided to Concept:CARE® client’s free of charge. Even if your needs are not within Concept:CARE®’s scope of practice, they will gladly assist you in finding other options at no charge, using its network of respected resources in the field. Yes, that certainly is unique, but there are so many other positive words you can use to describe Concept:CARE®. “We get so many compliments from patients and their families,” Greenberg said. “That is extremely gratifying. We take so much pride in providing collaborative healthcare to all of our patients. Everyone loves what they do at Concept:CARE® and this enables us to provide specialized and unique healthcare to all of our clients and their families.”

Westchester Medical Center debuts a new, visionary area of solace and comfort for Trauma Intensive Care Unit families
Dedication Plaque
Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, is now hosting families with loved ones in its Trauma Intensive Care Unit in a spectacular, new caregiver waiting area. The new space is more than twice the size of the previous Trauma Intensive Care Unit waiting room and includes several amenities designed to provide comfort for families during a challenging period. On a given day, more than 50 percent of the patients arriving at Westchester Medical Center – the advanced care hospital for the Hudson Valley - had no previous plans to visit the facility. Many of these patients are treated in the hospital’s Level I Trauma Intensive Care Unit, the only unit of its kind in the region. Being a Level I center, the hospital cares for the region’s most critically injured patients. As trauma injuries are often sudden and grave, families rush to Westchester Medical Center in support of their loved ones and often stay in the hospital for long periods of time as their family member receives care. The new Evan Lieberman Friends and Family Lounge was designed to accommodate and support Trauma Intensive Care Unit families. The new Lounge boasts more than 2,400 square feet of space
that includes an expanded waiting area with comfortable seating and multimedia touch points. In addition, since spouses, parents and other close family members need to be with or close by their loved ones during certain periods of care, showers, lockers, nutrition stations and modest resting accommodations for these dedicated caregivers have also been incorporated into the design. The newly expanded space represents an investment in resources for Hudson Valley families by the Westchester Medical Center Health Network and the Evan’s Team Foundation. “Due to the unique nature of its services our Trauma Intensive Care Unit often operates at patient capacity and when it does, we host 15 patients with three or four caregivers at their side. That’s a lot of people spending extended time in our hospital,” explained Linda McGinnis, R.N., Vice President, Patient Care Services, Westchester Medical Center. “The added space and amenities offered in the Evan Lieberman Family and Friends Lounge will provide extra comfort for stressed and worried caregivers while aiding them in their support of their loved ones.” An inspirational and motivational source for design and philanthropic support for the new caregiver area has been the Lieberman family and their local Chappaqua, New York, community. Four years ago Evan Lieberman, then 19, was brought to the Trauma Intensive Care Unit of Westchester Medical Center after sustaining severe injuries as a passenger in a motor vehicle accident. With his parents and younger sisters by his side at all times, Evan bravely battled for his life for more than 30 days before finally succumbing to his injuries. The Lieberman family was grateful for the medical care given to Evan, but felt the space provided to caregivers could offer more support.
For the past three years the family has worked with Westchester Medical Center officials to design the new caregiver area, and they have organized several fundraisers that have raised over $500,000 to support the construction of the new space. The Evan Lieberman Friends and Family Lounge, named in honor of their son and brother and supported by an entire community champions, is a tribute to all the families who spend countless hours supporting critically injured family members in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit.

Phelps named a Top Performer in Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission
Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, located in Sleepy Hollow, NY, has been recognized as a 2014 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in the United States. The Joint Commission included Phelps in its 2015 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” based on the hospital’s success in attaining and sustaining excellence in six areas of measurable performance: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, hospital-based psychiatric care and immunizations. Phelps is one of only 1,043 hospitals out of more than 3,300 eligible hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2014 Top Performer distinction and one of only four in Westchester County. Phelps was recognized as a 2013 Top Performer last year. “For the staff at Phelps, quality and patient safety are the numberone priority. We strive to achieve
positive patient outcomes by following care processes that have been proven effective,” says Daniel Blum, Phelps President & CEO. “It is gratifying to be named a Top Performer, because it validates the teamwork, knowledge and dedication of all who care for our patients.” To be a 2014 Top Performer, hospitals had to meet performance criteria based on specific 2014 accountability measure data. “Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality healthcare. I commend the efforts of Phelps Hospital for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” said Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH, president and CEO, The Joint Commission. For more information on the Top Performer program, visit www.jointcommission.org/accreditation/top_performers.aspx.
