Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”
THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.
Dr. Gregory Galano MD, Orthopedic Surgeon White Plains and New York, NY
As a board-certified sports medicine orthopedist, I see many patients with activity-related joint, back, and neck pain. Often I am confronted with patients that have exhausted other conservative forms of treatment, but fail to have lasting relief. Many of these patients would like to avoid surgery or may not even be good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr. Donath has proved extremely helpful to this patient population. He spends a great deal of time listening and examining the patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan. He offers innovative treatment options which include chiropractic, active release therapy, Graston technique, non-operative spinal decompression, and even exercise and nutrition programs. Having shared many patients with Dr. Donath, I have seen firsthand the positive interventions he has made in their daily lives and activities. They express the utmost respect and confidence in his clinical evaluation and knowledge, as well as his treatment techniques. I have no reservations recommending him highly to any patient I think may benefit from his services. Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY
“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”
Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

The beautifully redesigned space represents the culmination of the Building on Excellence Child Welfare Initiative, a three-year project that included the transformation of eight therapy rooms and the designated waiting area into warm, bright, calm spaces with fresh paint and cheerful wall graphics, new carpeting, durable, child-friendly furniture, functional storage and brand-new therapeutic toys and games, to better serve all the children and families who come to WIHD for services. “They say good things come to those who wait,” said Danielle S. Weisberg, LCSW, director of both Child Welfare Services and the Children’s Advocacy Center at WIHD. “For the clients and staff of WIHD’s child welfare programs, the wait is finally over and great things have indeed come.” Ms. Weisberg went on to describe the improvements in detail. “We hired a very impressive design firm, and they created a look and feel for our space that projected a sense of calm, and introduced elements of the natural environment into our cold, institutional space,” she said. “We chose furniture that would stand up to the daily use of high energy children. We created a wish list on Amazon.com, with the hope that friends like you and so many others would donate new toys and games for the remodeled space. We added storage so that the children aren’t overwhelmed by the sight of all the toys and games.” continued on page 8

It’s with deep sadness we share the news with our readers and advertisers of the sudden passing of General Manager James Stankiewicz on February 1, 2017. Jim was only 52. Jim began his career here at Belsito Communications almost 16 years ago with Hospital Newspaper and was also a part of launching Healthcare News and Boomers & Beyond several years ago into Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT. As many of you who have had the opportunity to meet Jim at various events our publication was involved in over the years can attest, he had an undeniable enthusiasm about his work and was very proud of the publications he helped to build. As passionate as he was for his job, Jim’s family was what made him the most proud. His wife, Susan, and children Robert and Brianna were his life’s motivation as well as other family members including his mother, brother and three sisters. Jim’s work family will always remember the jokester he was here at the office and how he always went out of his way to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He was an ardent fan of the Jets and Mets and spent many years coaching baseball to scores of youth in the local area. Jim will always be a part of our Belsito Communications’ family. Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital opens state-of-the-art, radiation-saving pediatric fluoroscopy suite
A new pediatric fluoroscopy suite at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), offers our region’s pediatric patients and families the highest quality, low-radiation diagnostic imaging – all in a calming, child-friendly environment. The one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art imaging suite, designed in collaboration with WMCHealth’s technology partner, Philips, features low-radiation, ambient lighting, audio speakers and video monitors that play animated scenes to keep children at ease during important imaging procedures. Fluoroscopy imaging is a video x-ray that allows radiologists to study moving body structures in real time, with the option to review captured video and capture still images. It is used for imaging procedures including upper gastrointestinal exams, barium enemas, cystograms and esophagrams, and can be used for more common injuries, such as broken bones. The equipment has the capability to detect the size of the patient and automatically propose the optimized parameters depending on the patient’s age, minimizing exposure. “Infants and children are more sensitive to radiation than adults and require special consideration when undergoing imaging procedures,” said Adele Brudnicki, MD, Director of Pediatric Radiology and Chief of Body Imaging at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. “The suite’s fluoroscopy technology provides higher quality imaging for more accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition in a shorter amount of time, and it does so while emitting low levels of radiation.” During an imaging procedure, the child will see slowly changing, colorful ambient lighting on the walls and can select animated videos to view on large screens – everything from fish swimming in the ocean to hot air balloons soaring and pandas eating. “Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is the go-to facility for pediatric imaging in the greater Hudson Valley, and the addition of our child-friendly fluoroscopy suite will make imaging more efficient, more comfortable and most importantly, even safer,” said Lesli LeCompte, MD, a pediatric radiologist and Director of Ultrasound at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. “The ambient lighting and childfriendly capabilities of this new imaging suite are a comfort to our patients and families during what can often be a very stressful and scary time in their lives.”
Hudson Valley community supports creation of pediatric imaging suite through Children’s Miracle Network hospitals contributions

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s new, pediatric fluoroscopy suite pairs low-radiation technology with ambient lighting and animated screens for a calming, child-friendly environment.
Built By the Community for its Children Funding for the new pediatric fluoroscopy suite at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital resulted from the generosity of Hudson Valley and Fairfield County residents and businesses, which rallied behind the seriously ill and injured children cared for at its regional children’s hospital by donating funds through Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals campaigns. CMN Hospitals is an international organization that raises awareness and funds for member children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, keeping 100% of donations local to the community in which they were raised. Funds supporting the construction of the pediatric fluoroscopy suite were donated to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital through campaigns at national CMN Hospital-sponsors with locations in the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County such
as Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, RiteAid, Marriott, IHOP and RE/MAX, plus special events like Extra Life, collegiate Dance Marathons and the 100.7 WHUD Radiothon For the Kids, which is generously sponsored by local businesses ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., Saw Mill Auto Sales, Tompkins Mahopac Bank and others. With its industry-leading imaging technology and soothing atmosphere, total costs for constructing the advanced pediatric imaging suite at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital were approximately $1.4 million. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates
Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.
“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

Make healthy shifts in food choices at home during National Nutrition Month, says Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
During National Nutrition Month®, celebrated each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages everyone to "Put Your Best Fork Forward" by making small, healthy shifts in food choices when cooking at home. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend making small changes to eating patterns to include healthier ingredients while cooking at home. Choosing a variety of healthful foods across and within all food groups helps reduce the risk of preventable, lifestyle-related chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. "Evidence shows that making dietary and lifestyle changes can prevent diseases before they occur," says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Angel Planells. "During National Nutrition Month and beyond, make small, healthier food choices – one forkful at a time." "It's important to create an eating style that includes a variety of your favorite, healthful foods," Planells says. "Consider cultural and personal preferences to make these shifts easier to maintain." To find a personalized plan that works best, Planells suggests consulting a registered dietitian nutritionist. RDNs can provide sound, easy-tofollow nutrition advice to meet your lifestyle, preferences and health-related needs.
Planells encourages everyone to eat more of these foods:
• Vegetables, including dark green, red and orange, beans, peas and others

Consumers can also follow National Nutrition Month on Facebook and Twitter (#NationalNutritionMonth).
All registered dietitians are nutritionists – but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The Academy's Board of Directors and Commission on Dietetic Registration have determined that those who hold the credential registered dietitian (RD) may optionally use "registered dietitian nutritionist" (RDN) instead. The two credentials have identical meanings. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The Academy is committed to improving the nation’s health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. Visit the Academy at eatright.org.

Valhalla fifth grader receives The James Ranti Trumpet Scholarship
photos provided
Trumpet teacher James Ranti was a fixture at the Music Conservatory of Westchester from September, 2002 until his passing this past December. At a memorial service held in January, many former students recounted the dedication and inspiration he gave to countless students over a lifetime of teaching. To celebrate this legacy, the Conservatory has named a scholarship in his honor. Andrew Paucar, who began studying trumpet at the Conservatory in November, has been named the recipient of The James Ranti Trumpet Scholarship. The Valhalla fifth grader currently takes trumpet lessons with Conservatory faculty member David Hurd. He also takes Elementary Theory, and plays in the Latin Jazz band with his older brother Pablo, a saxophone student. Andrew attends fifth grade at the Kensico Elementary School in Valhalla. He is one of more than 80 dedicated students who receive needbased tuition assistance through the Conservatory’s Scholarship Program.

New eHealth Program Connects HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus with Westchester Medical Center Health Network Telemedicine Hub
State-of-the-art telemedicine technology linking HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), with the specialized WMCHealth telehealth operations center is now operational, further fulfilling WMCHealth’s commitment to bring the highest level of care to all patients in New York’s Hudson Valley. WMCHealth’s secure, high-definition eHealth Program offers HealthAlliance patients personalized care from advanced WMCHealth specialists without having to travel to visit them. The specialists complement -- and do not replace -- the dedicated healthcare teams at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston. WMCHealth’s eHealth program now in use at the Broadway Campus is stroke telemedicine, also called telestroke. Telestroke is to be followed in the coming weeks by telepsychiatry, teletrauma and teleICU services, or eHealth services at intensive care units. Telepsychiatry will be available at the Broadway Campus, at HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus, a member of WMCHealth, and at Margaretville Hospital in Margaretville, N.Y., a member of WMCHealth. Teletrauma will be used in the Emergency Departments of the Broadway Campus and Margaretville Hospital. TeleICU will be at Broadway and Mary’s Avenue. The new programs connect all HealthAlliance hospitals with WMCHealth’s 5,500-square-foot eHealth operations center, staffed by a wide array of medical specialists who use 20 multimedia stations to monitor patients in real time. The eHealth operations center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “With WMCHealth’s eHealth program, clinical specialists in the operations center can evaluate patients, share information and discuss patient issues with us in Kingston as if they were here,” said Paul Llobet, MD, Chief Medical Officer, HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley. “The videoconferencing capabilities enable split-second medical decisions that save lives.”
With eHealth’s teleICU program, for instance, doctors and nurses trained in critical-care medicine will use sophisticated equipment at the eHealth operations center to monitor vital signs around the clock and collaborate with HealthAlliance bedside teams. Vital signs, medications, blood test results, X-rays and other pertinent information from bedside monitors will be sent to the eHealth control center through secure, high-speed data lines. This information will appear on the control center’s monitors exactly as it appears to bedside care teams at the Broadway Campus. Critical-care specialists watching monitors that continually collect data will support HealthAlliance clinicians in spotting signs of imminent trouble. If a HealthAlliance patient needs attention, physicians at the eHealth center can zoom in via two-way camera -- close enough to read the tiny print on an IV bag or to examine a patient’s pupils. The eHealth team can also consult directly with bedside doctors, nurses,
family members and patients. Incorporating telehealth in ICUs decreases mortality 20 percent and reduces the length of hospital stays 26 percent, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found. To protect patient privacy, the cameras are off and turned away from patients when HealthAlliance and the eHealth center are not communicating. Notably, WMCHealth’s eHealth program was recently used by WMCHealth doctors to evaluate conjoined 11-month-old twin girls in the Dominican Republic. The girls later flew with their parents to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of WMCHealth, for a successful 21-hour surgical separation two weeks ago. “As the Hudson Valley region’s advanced care network, WMCHealth is committed to providing the highest level of care as close to home as possible,” said Michael Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health
provided
Network. “Expanding telemedicine to Ulster County and the surrounding areas is another example of our commitment to benefiting patients throughout our home region as we advance care here in the Hudson Valley.” “Telehealth is a proven advance in medicine that leads to better patient outcomes,” said Corey Scurlock, MD, Medical Director, WMCHealth eHealth Center. “Our eHealth program has been deployed on WMCHealth’s Valhalla campus and at our network affiliate MidHudson Regional Hospital with great success, and we expect the same at HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway and Mary’s Avenue Campuses and at Margaretville Hospital. Telemedicine brings additional, qualified medical professionals into the patient-care process and we are thrilled to offer this service to local residents.” For more information about HealthAlliance, visit hahv.org. Aerial view of the main Wartburg campus.
Celebrating 150 years of caring: Wartburg looks back on year-long commemoration of milestone provided
Throughout 2016, Wartburg sponsored several initiatives, informative programs and fun events to highlight its historic 150th anniversary. Founded as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School in 1866 just after the Civil War to provide a safe haven for children in need, Wartburg ended its services to children in 1979 due to changes in foster care. At the time, Wartburg fully transitioned into providing a continuum of care for seniors and their families, including residents and others in the surrounding community. “Successful organizations never waiver from their mission and values. This is Wartburg. We are proud of who we are, and proud of what we do. We made the most of this anniversary year and now we will move on to new challenges, always thankful for the opportunity to serve,” said David Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO.
150 Years of Caring for Our Residents This year, Wartburg renovated its Meadowview Assisted Living facility, upgrading its lobby/gathering area and installed a keyless entry system for resident rooms. Staff and residents also celebrated the newly renovated Marie Barletta Café, named in the memory of a former resident who remembered Wartburg in her estate plans.
150 Years of Caring for the Community Wartburg hosted a Quarterly Speakers Series including two educational community events with a panel of experts on Alzheimer's disease and dementia discussing early warning signs, challenges to caregivers, the benefits of arts-based therapies
and advances in research and current clinical trials. Wartburg also hosted a book reading with award-winning NY1 reporter, Cheryl Wills. Wills authored “Die Free: A Heroic Family History," which chronicles the story of her escaped enslaved ancestor who fought for his freedom in the Union Army during the Civil War. Wartburg’s flagship annual fundraising event, the Jazz in June gala, featured keynote speakers B. Smith, lifestyle maven, restaurateur and author, and her husband and co-author Dan Gasby. The couple discussed their book, Before I Forget: Love, Hope, Help and Acceptance in Our Fight Against Alzheimer's, which details their journey after Smith was diagnosis with Alzheimer's Disease. Wartburg also held several fun and festive outdoor events at its beautiful 34-acre campus. People from the surrounding communities joined Wartburg’s residents and staff to enjoy the historic Fall Festival, which featured entertainment, children's games, shopping and The Wartburg Orphans' Farm School alumni homecoming reunion. Wartburg also welcomed the return of its Classic Car Show, which included a trophy for Best Sounding Car, judged by visually impaired registrants of its Adult Day Care program. “We could really tell a lot about a car by listening to how it starts up. We knew the bigger, older cars by listening to their powerful engine sound. It was great to feel that our opinions mattered, even though we couldn’t see the cars,” said Gwendolyn Lee, Adult Day Services registrant and one of the “Best Sounding” judges.
150 Years of History Wartburg also collected and cataloged historical artifacts from its extensive history, including digitizing a circa 1938 16mm film reel that featured a 40-plus minute documentary of the The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School. It is available to view on Wartburg’s YouTube channel (wartburgny) and www.creativeagingstories.com. Wartburg also unveiled a self-guided Walking Tour, inviting residents and visitors to learn more about Wartburg’s impressive history.
150 Years of Nurturing Body, Mind, Spirit Wartburg held its culminating anniversary event, A Celebration of Praise and Thanksgiving, in their historic Chapel built in 1902, which welcomed their inter-faith partners in celebration of 150 years of providing spiritual care to the community. “This has been an incredibly exciting year-from preserving our history to looking forward to the next 150 years of innovation and quality care our community has come to rely on. Thank you to all those who supported us throughout the years and during our anniversary. We could not provide the programs and services to our residents, rehabilitation and home care patients and Adult Day Care registrants without them,” said Angela Ciminello, Wartburg’s Vice President of Development and Marketing. Wartburg now looks toward the next century by continuing to provide innovative rehabilitative care, provide modern housing and to conceptualize a campus expansion to extend their services to those who need it, when they need it. Can kids get sleep apnea? PAGE 24
March, 2017
Loud, sleep-interrupting snoring may seem like an adult-specific issue, but children aren’t immune. About 20% of kids snore from time to time, and in most cases, there’s no reason to be concerned by the nighttime noises. But if snorting or gasping sounds accompany the snoring, it could be a sign of a larger issue: sleep apnea. The condition, which causes pauses in breathing throughout the night due to the obstruction of airways, affects one percent to 10 percent of children. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart trouble, and poor growth, but luckily, there are a number of treatments available. One of the most common causes of sleep apnea in children is enlarged tonsils. If a doctor determines that this is what’s responsible for a child’s excessive snoring, he or she may surgically remove the tonsils. And because sleep apnea is more prevalent in overweight kids, a weight loss program could also help.If neither of these options is successful, doc-

tors may recommend continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This involves the child wearing a CPAP mask during the night, which blows air into the airways to keep them open, helping to end the snoring. Talk to your pediatrician if you suspect that your child has sleep apnea. In addition to loud snoring, you may notice your child gasping for air during the night, tossing and turning, or sleeping in strange positions in an attempt to keep airways open. Signs of sleep apnea may also show up during the day. Children with sleep apnea often feel tired, since the condition wakes them from their sleep periodically throughout the night. In turn, they may have difficulty paying attention at school or be in an irritable mood. In fact, sleep apnea in children has been linked to a higher risk of depression and anxiety. The good news is that many kids outgrow sleep apnea, so talk with your doctor about which treatment method is right for your child. Source:sleepfoundation.org/
Foods for a good night's sleep
Preparing for a good night’s sleep starts at mealtime. Certain foods, such as the ones listed below, can have a calming effect on both the brain and body. And if you're not sure how to incorporate each food into a dish, take a look at these suggestions.
Lean Proteins Tryptophan, an amino acid that increases serotonin levels to help you feel sleepy and relaxed, can be found in foods like turkey, chicken, fish, and low-fat cheese. Combining foods that are high in tryptophan with healthy, complex carbohydrates also improves sleep. An hour before bed, try having a snack of whole-wheat crackers and cheese or a small turkey sandwich on wholegrain bread. Or for dinner, chow down on grilled chicken and brown rice, a black bean and cheddar quesadilla on a whole-grain tortilla, or whole-wheat mac 'n cheese.
Herbs Certain herbs, such as sage and basil, contain chemicals that can improve sleep by easing tensions that would keep you awake. Basil can be sprinkled on whole-wheat pasta dishes or when topping sliced mozzarella and tomatoes. You can also chop it up and mix it with olive oil, garlic, pine nuts, salt and pepper, and pecorino cheese to make a pesto sauce, and then toss cooked zucchini in it. Sage pairs best with fatty meats like pork and beef (which you should eat only in moderation). You can also put it on butternut squash soup or a cold bean salad. Nuts Eating heart-healthy fats can also boost serotonin levels, and nuts—including walnuts, almonds, and cashews, as well as nut butters—are a solid source. Nuts are a great addition to salads and stir-fry dinners, and they can also be incorporated into meals as breadcrumbs on, say, a chicken cutlet. Or, mix sliced almonds with green beans as a side, combine walnuts with bananas in whole-grain pancakes, or smear almond butter on a whole-grain waffle.

Many clients today want more life insurance to protect their families and their business interests, but do not want to go through the inconvenience of the full medical underwriting process. This process can include a lengthy application, full financial disclosure, blood & urine screening, a paramedical exam, an EKG exam, a DMV report, an MIB report and the release of all medical records. Some clients just do not have the time or the interest to go through this process… others are just plain scared of needles...! Either way, this protocol which can take many months to complete can be avoided.
Both Whole Life and Universal Life insurance policies are offered by Guardian. It is important to note that clients must be between the ages of 20-60 and must have been approved standard or better. In addition, Disability Waiver of Premium is available. The Disability Waiver of Premium rider, when attached to an eligible life insurance policy, helps you continue your policy's coverage during disability. It does so by waiving the premiums on a policy when the insured has suffered from a debilitating disability that has lasted for at least six months. What are the eligibility criteria? ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢
Insurance policies must be fully underwritten within the last four (4) years. Program is open to individuals with life insurance policies from an approved carrier list of 99 companies. Policy must not have been issued as a result of reinsurance. Risk class must be standard or better with no flat extras. Insured must be between the ages of 20 and 60. Existing policies must be placed and in force. New contract cannot replace existing policy.
You are never going to be any younger or any healthier than you are right now. If you have purchased life insurance recently and feel you need more, do not delay. The Rapid App program is one of the easiest ways to secure permanent life insurance coverage with one of the best carriers in the world. See the carrier's ratings:

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when it’s found early. Screening is the #1 way to prevent colon cancer because it finds cancer in the early stages, or, before it even has the chance to grow or develop. While screening is the most important step you can take to prevent colon cancer, it’s not the only one. You may be able to lower your colon cancer risk with some simple lifestyle changes. Be proactive about keeping yourself healthy. It will pay off!
Eat Well Consistent evidence shows diets high in vegetables, fruits and other plant foods reduce risk for many diseases, including colon cancer. In addition to these foods containing lots of dietary fiber and nutrients, plant foods are good sources of substances called phytochemicals, which help protect cells in the body from damage that can lead to cancer. Plant foods can also help us maintain a healthy weight – also important in reducing risk of colon cancer – because many are lower in calories. Diets high in red and processed meats have also been linked to colon cancer. Red meats include any meat that is red when raw, like beef, pork or lamb. Try to keep your red meat intake to 18 ounces (cooked) per week or less. Processed meats, on the other hand, should be avoided if possible. Processed meats include hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausages, among others, and cancer risk increases even with low consumption. Get Your Exercise Research consistently shows adults who increase their physical activity, either in intensity, duration or frequency, can reduce their risk of developing colon cancer by 30 to 40 percent. It’s estimated that 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day is needed to protect against colon cancer. Exercise also helps you to maintain a healthy body weight, which reduces your risk for colon cancer. In fact, studies show people who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop colon polyps, a possible precursor to cancer, and higher weights are associated with higher polyp risk.
Know Your Family Health History A family history of colon cancer puts you at an increased risk for the disease. A family history is considered to be an immediate family member (parent, brother or sister) or multiple family members with colon cancer or polyps. If you have a family history, you may need to be screened at age 40, or 10 years before the youngest case in your immediate family, whichever is earlier. Talk to your family about their health history!
Avoid Alcohol & Cigarettes Although modest amounts of some alcohols have been linked to protecting against coronary heart disease, alcohol is known to increase cancer risk. According to the National Cancer Institute, people who regularly drink 3.5 drinks per day have 1.5 times the risk of developing colon cancer as nondrinkers or occasional drinkers. If you do chose to drink, try to limit your consumption. Long-term cigarette smoking is also associated with increased risk of colon cancer. The longer a person smokes, the greater the risk. Phelps acquires latest technology for minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery
Phelps Hospital has acquired the most advanced method of minimally invasive robotic surgery, the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, for its state-of-the-art SurgiCenter. Manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci Xi can be used during minimally invasive gynecological, urological, thoracic, cardiac and general surgical procedures. During robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon sits at a console and uses hand controls to maneuver robotic arms while viewing images of the inside of the patient’s body that are displayed on a high-definition, 3-D screen. The robotic arms have tiny instruments, including an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera), attached to the ends of them. The instruments, which have joints and can bend in multiple directions, have the ability to cut, cauterize (burn or sear skin or flesh to stop bleeding) and grasp. At all times, the surgeon is totally in control of the robotic-assisted system, which translates his/her hand movements into small, precise movements of the tiny instruments. Key features of the newest da Vinci surgical system include an overhead instrument design for the robotic arms, which facilitates anatomical access; a more compact endoscope that provides improved vision and clarity; the ability to attach the endoscope to any of the robotic arms, improving visualization of the surgical site; and

Darren Rohan, MD, FACS, regional director of the Northwell Health Physician Partners thoracic surgery program for Westchester, is heading up the robotic-assisted thoracic surgery team at Phelps. Dr. Rohan, a thoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery, has been performing this type of surgery for four years. “Surgeons trained on the robot can do more complex operations minimally invasively,” says Dr. Rohan. “And with this new da Vinci system, even more patients can be treated minimally invasively because the high-definition visualization is better, the instruments are smaller and it’s easier to move them around.” The daVinci Xi is expandable technology, designed to accommodate future innovations in imaging and advanced instruments.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature
After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”
At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has alof ready helps thousands herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
