Healthcare News - Westchester

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

If you’re a parent, you know what that means – busy mornings getting the kids ready and out the door with backpacks and lunch bags in hand. With just a little planning, you can help your child make healthy food choices throughout the school day. School meals and snacks are big topics of conversation this year, and students have already started to see healthier options popping up in the cafeteria. By serving healthy foods and drinks at home, you can help your kids learn how to choose healthy options when they’re away from home. Packing lunch is another way to make sure they’re getting the right foods and drinks. It’s not always easy to get up in the morning, make breakfast, get ready for work, get the kids out the door and pack a lunch without feeling frazzled. It may be helpful to pack lunches the night before, either after dinner or before the kids’ bedtime. Encourage your children to help by choosing foods they like to eat, and packing them in a lunch bag or lunchbox. When kids help make it and choose it, they’ll most likely eat it! When it comes to drinks, water is always the best choice. Adding fruit (like raspberries or lemon) or packing plain or naturally flavored seltzer water are two ways to mix things up a bit. It’s best not to send flavored milk, which is packed with a lot of added sugar. Instead, send them with low-fat or non-fat plain milk. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Include a variety of foods for lunches and snacks that you’ll feel good about packing and your kids will love eating. Stuck for some new ideas? Make things easier by choosing one food from each category below to make a delicious and healthy lunch or snack. The key to good nutrition is to eat a variety of foods. Every time you pack a lunch with foods like fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products, you’re doing something positive for your child’s health. As an added benefit, good nutrition also improves your child’s ability to learn and succeed in school. So, what will be in your child’s lunchbox this year?

Some parents in Westchester County are cheering the start of a new school year. However, others may be singing the blues, knowing they’ll be missing leisurely days of easy hugs or spontaneous family outings, as their little ones learn to navigate school hallways and unfamiliar social terrain. Yes, parents can experience the back to school blues, too. If you’re dreading a new school year, there are simple ways to cope with the separation anxiety, even if you can’t watch your little one get on the bus: · Be a school volunteer. There are lots of opportunities for parents to be involved in the school. Plan a school party, sign up as a reading volunteer or math aid or come in on career day to talk about your job. It's also nice for the child. It gives them a sense of being special. · Pursue other interests. Parents who suddenly have time on their hands can embrace interests they may have put off, such as yoga, music lessons, a book club, volunteering at a food bank or signing up for some adult education classes. · Remember, it’s OK to cry. Don’t do it at the child's school, or in front of the child, but it’s OK to cry in private. Any kind of change can engender feelings of loss. Losing day-to-day contact does require a shift and sometimes that's a little uncomfortable. It will hurt, she says, but it will also get better. If you feel more like cheering than crying at the sight of a little one climbing onto the school bus, go for it. Remember, you can do this. Have a great school year! USING GREEN PRODUCTS TO RESTORE YOUR PROPERTY AFTER A DISASTER

In 1990, 1 in 5000 children were born with autism. That year, Lisa Cordasco, took her son home from the hospital and the journey began. What was supposed to be a “typical” and “traditional” life, quickly evolved into a life of doctor’s visits and special needs services and programs. Lisa was unable to return to the classroom as an elementary school teacher due to the demands of raising a child with special needs as a single parent. She decided to join her father’s business as a part time marketing representative. The company provides 24/7 emergency fire and water damage restoration services to property owners. After working with her dad for years, she gained vast knowledge in what customers wanted, expected and needed after a disaster. What was missing, was the natural, safe, non-toxic component. Like most if not all restoration companies in this line of work, dad too used harsh chemicals which were effective yet dangerous. Upon his retirement, Lisa reinvented the family business and New Crystal Restoration was born. New Crystal Restoration is unique. The company helps property owners with floods, fires, mold and other disaster situations, however, they feature green products. The botanical based products used are powerful, effective, safe and non-toxic. All property owners and insureds have the option to select the vendor of their choice to help them with their repairs under the terms of their insurance policy. New Crystal Restoration works with all insurance companies. The cost for the green restoration is no more expensive than going with harsh chemicals.

The company direct bills your insurance and it’s a win-win situation! If you have the choice to eat organic food or pesticide laced food for the same price, what would you choose? Your health matters. We think so and we love someone with special needs who has motivated us to help keep all property owners safe. Visit www.newcrystalrestoration.com for more information.

You must protect your assets, family and future now!

The Importance of Elder Law: For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and

estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”

The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living

will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

“Chief’s Challenge” scores again: Westchester County Police and Mohegan Lake Firemen win big for fitness

provided

The Westchester County Police Department and Mohegan Lake Fire Department were each recently awarded $1000 as winners in the 2014 Chief’s Challenge, a program designed to improve the health and fitness of first responders by encouraging them to take advantage of discounted memberships at local health clubs. Of the nearly 200 participants from 35 police and fire departments throughout Westchester and Putnam Counties and New York City, the two winning departments tallied up the highest levels of participation by their members. Working in collaboration with Club Fit in Briarcliff and Jefferson Valley, The Chief’s Challenge was established and funded by the Heart and Health Education Foundation, directed by Franklin Zimmerman, MD, Arthur Fass, MD, and Dina Katz, MD, all members of the Phelps Medical Associates cardiology practice in Briarcliff Manor. The program was inspired by research conducted by Dr. Zimmerman, a nationally-recognized authority in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease in public safety personnel. His findings have been widely cited at national law enforcement meetings and in publications.

“My research shows that law enforcement personnel have a high risk of heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors. One only needs to listen to the nightly news to understand the high level of stress these men and women endure. Our program seeks to create an incentive for first responders to maintain cardiovascular health and fitness.” For Dr. Zimmerman, his passion for the subject is both professional and personal. His sister, Shelley Zimmerman, is Chief of Police of San Diego. Thomas Eade, Lieutenant in the Lake Mohegan Fire Department, was enthusiastic about the program. “Fitness is a paramount consideration for firefighters, and adding some competition about fitness gives people a push, and makes them strive to be better at their occupation,” remarked Lt. Eade. The money awarded by Chief's Challenge will help offset the cost of the fitness machines for their station. “There are stresses associated with police work and the shifts they have to work,” said Stephen Smith of the Westchester County Police Department. “Staying in shape and eating a healthy diet helps officers address challenges they are confronted with every day. We consider health important and promote it in the department.”

A Police Benevolent Association vice president, he will use the Chief's Challenge award to purchase exercise equipment for the police academy, which will also enable other recruits and members of the department to benefit. The 2015 Chief's Challenge is under way, with high hopes for an even bigger turnout of public safety personnel this year. Club Fit is offering a highly discounted membership for all active police officers and firefighters. To your kids, shopping for new clothes and school supplies may be the only good thing about going back to school, but that doesn't mean you have to break the bank every year. Here are some great ideas for how to get everything they need and save a few bucks doing it.

Hold off buying trendier gear Kids may love a certain lunch box or pencil case they find in July, but once they start school and see that their friends are all using another kind, they'll beg you to upgrade them, and that only results in wasted cash.

Shop end-of-summer sales You know as well as we do that kids wear short sleeve polo shirts all year long, so hit the big summer sales and snap up discounted duds that can be worn well into fall.

Stick to the list The teacher's supply list at the start of a new school year is daunting enough so don't waste time and money on unlisted items. Extra supplies, while they may be cute, will probably never get used and just leave your pockets empty.

Host a back-to-school swap Round up a couple of other moms with kids the same gender as yours but different ages, and host an annual clothes swap. Trade toys and books, too! You'll save a bundle.

Plan lunch When you're in charge of what your child eats, you'll save yourself money. Check the weekly circulars at your local supermarkets for sales. If turkey isn't on sale one week and ham is, go for the ham!

BCW & County Executive honor 2015 Green Business Winners Six businesses join impressive roster

Pictured are representatives from the 14 organizations that have received certification.

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Dr. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester, last night hosted the Westchester Green Business Challenge’s 5th Annual Recognition Event and Awards Ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains. Joined by WGBC Program Directors Dani Glaser and Scott Fernqvist, organizers recognized a prestigious group of Westchester organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability and outstanding achievements. This year’s winners in their respective categories include:

· · · · ·

Outreach & Organizational Commitment: Suburban Carting Company (Briarcliff Manor) Energy: Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Tarrytown) Waste Management & Green Products: Allied Converters, Inc. (New Rochelle) Transportation: Diamond Properties, LLC (Mt. Kisco) Land Use & Water: Purchase College, State University of New York (Purchase)

“The Westchester business community has never been greener, thanks to the Westchester Green Business Challenge and its partners,” said Astorino. “Each year more business leaders are catching on that with the help of this program, they can make choices that are smart for the environment and for their bottom line. Congratulations to the diverse group of businesses recognized today for leading the way within their industries and demonstrating that Westchester is the place to run a successful sustainable company.”

First launched in 2009 in partnership with Westchester County, this public-private partnership between Westchester County and The Business Council of Westchester helps Westchester-based organizations become environmentally sustainable while simultaneously improving operational performance and saving money. To date, over 300 local businesses have joined Westchester Green Business-Certified, which expanded in 2014 to include a new pathway for participants to achieve certification. In addition to the awards, 14 organizations that have achieved certification (see list below) were recognized at the ceremony. “It has been enormously satisfying to see this program expand in Westchester County and become a regional, statewide and even national model for others to follow,” BCW President and CEO Marsha Gordon said. “Employers from all industries are realizing that sustainability is an essential ingredient to their long-term success and ability to retain the most talented workforce.” The highly prestigious Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award was presented this year to Arc Westchester, the largest agency in the county serving children, teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Headquartered in Hawthorne NY, Arc Westchester has more than 800 employees throughout the county and over 53,000 square footage of office space. They embody the spirit of the Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award by incorporating sustainability into all aspects of their business and demonstrating visionary leadership. The award was established three years ago in memory of the founder and owner of C.W. Brown, the Armonk-based firm that became the first existing facility in Westchester to receive LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Residency Graduates First Class of Residents Healthcare News - Westchester September, 2015

The first six doctors to graduate from the NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program were honored at graduation ceremonies held recently at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center. Three years ago, these first residents arrived at Phelps to begin their training as family medicine physicians. The vision of the program has always been that graduates would choose to stay locally after they completed their three-year residency, providing the region with excellent family physicians. So far, three of the first six graduates have accepted positions in Westchester and one in the Bronx. Anesh Badiwala, MD, will be practicing family medicine on the staff of Phelps Medical Associates, Phelps’ primary and specialty care medical group; Jorge M. Espana, MD, has joined the staff at Port Chester Open Door Family Medical Centers; and London Muse, MD, has accepted a teaching position on the faculty of the NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Resi-

dency Program. Sara Marie Paul, MD, will be continuing her education nearby in the obstetrics fellowship program at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx. At press time, Batel Isenstein, MD, and George Elkomos, MD, had not yet announced their plans. The NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program is a collaboration developed by three major Westchester health institutions: New York Medical College, Open Door Family Medical Centers and Phelps. Physicians at Phelps provide residents with the broad range of clinical training that is required for board certification in family medicine. In addition to rotations in the hospital, residents see outpatients at Open Door Family Medical Centers’ Sleepy Hollow location. New York Medical College in Valhalla is the sponsoring academic institution for the program, which received national accreditation in 2011 and was recently reaccredited for a period of 10 years.

Family physicians are primary care doctors who treat the whole person in every stage of life. They are trained to take care of the entire family, dealing with issues that may affect more than one family member and creating long-term, personal relationships with their patients and their communities.

PAGE 17

“Family physicians deliver babies, care for children, and are trained to see patients from birth into middle age and through their later years,” said Dr. Shantie Harkisoon, director of the residency program. “We are very proud of our first graduates and delighted that so many of them have chosen to remain in the area.”

Five worst breakfast foods for you PAGE 18

September, 2015

Healthcare News - Westchester

The best breakfast foods give you fuel in the tank for energy that lasts. They boost your metabolism, fight disease and help you keep your weight down. The worst breakfast foods do the opposite. They lead to mid-morning crashes, wreak havoc on your metabolism, encourage disease and cause weight gain. You shouldn’t skip breakfast — doing so can make you gain weight, lose energy and think poorly. But you should skip the worst breakfast options. If you see these five foods on the menu, run the other way.

1. Doughnut and pastries: A recipe for weight gain Doughnuts will cost you 250–550 calories, but the 20–50 grams of sugar in each is the real problem. With such a huge amount of sugar in a small package, your body pumps out lots of insulin to accommodate. A huge blood sugar peak leads to an even bigger sugar crash. This extreme up-and-down leaves you hungry soon after your breakfast — and you’ll crave more refined carbs. It’s a vicious cycle of unhealthy eating that starts with the first doughnut.

2. Sausage biscuit: Hypertension’s helper The sausage biscuit is basically a saturated fat and sodium bomb nestled in a trans fat sleeping bag. If your blood vessels could talk, they would plead, “Please don’t do it to us!” as you place your order at the fast-food drive-through. The sky-high sodium in the highly processed sausage can make your blood pressure surge. If you have hypertension, it may increase your risk for stroke. Nitrates and nitrites in sausage have been linked to increased risk of certain cancers, too.

3. Flavored non-dairy creamer: A coffee disaster If you think non-dairy creamer is a healthy option, think again. Many non-dairy creamers simply swap saturated fat for trans fat (check the label for “partially hydrogenated” oil), plus sugar and artificial sweeteners. Trans fat increases your risk of heart attack and stroke by increasing LDL cholesterol. Predictions say decreasing trans fat consumption by even a little could help prevent more than 10,000 deaths a year. To perk up your coffee, try unsweetened vanilla almond milk, low-fat milk or a small amount of chocolate milk instead.

4. Bright, sugary cereals: A rainbow of hyperactivity Those magically colored kids’ cereals aren’t such a bright choice. The FDA has noted that food dyes may contribute to hyperactivity in children with ADHD, even if not in other children. A 2012 study backed up that idea but said more research is needed. Even if food coloring’s effects aren’t fully understood, these cereals are usually loaded with sugar — empty calories for your little ones.

5. Loaded bagel: An invitation for diabetes Your body works hard to keep you functioning at night. Don’t thank it with inflammationcausing calories in the form of a bagel loaded with cream cheese or butter. Except for the occasional 100 percent whole grain option, most bagels are 300–500 calories worth of starch. Slathering on cream cheese or butter adds more calories and saturated fat. Diets high in refined carbohydrates have been linked to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so don’t make bagels a regular morning meal.

Save on Taxes! Defer Your IRA Minimum Required Distributions To Age 85! By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC I wrote about this topic earlier in the year, but I wanted to revisit it because it is so important. Do you want to be able to defer those unwanted Required Minimum Distribution (RMDs) from your IRA after age 70½…? Well now you can and at the same time avoid those unnecessary federal and state income taxes.

RMD rules require all individuals with qualified money to take distributions from those accounts beginning at age 70½, with respect to a portion of their total retirement savings, whether they need the income or not. In July 2014, the U.S. Treasury Department removed a significant impediment to the ability of qualified plan participants and IRA owners to balance their use of annuities and other investments in their retirement plans by issuing final regulations that allow individuals to bypass Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules.

The new regulations allow individuals to essentially defer a percentage of their RMD distributions and the taxes associated with those distributions with no penalty! The individual establishes a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract, or “QLAC,” a guaranteed deferred annuity, under which the amount of annuity payments is locked in at purchase, and those payments can be deferred at a later date up to age 85.

These annuities are also referred to as Deferred Income Annuities, or “DIAs.” DIAs have been available in the marketplace for some time before these regulations became effective; however, when they were purchased under a qualifying employer-sponsored plan or Individual Retirement Account (IRA), the annuity payments generally needed to commence by age 70½, or the individual’s actual date when RMDs must commence. Thus, QLACs generally encompass such DIA contracts with income start dates after age 70½ and at or before age 85, while non-QLAC (or NQLAC) DIAs remain available for income start dates up to age 70½ in qualified employer plans or IRAs, and are not subject to the new QLAC limitations. Limits on premiums / purchase payments

➢ Over their lifetime, individuals cannot allocate more than $125,000 of their qualifying retirement plan [401(a)/(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b)] and IRA (traditional; not Roth nor inherited IRAs) savings to QLACs. ➢ Additionally, no more than 25% of the participant’s account in any one qualifying retirement plan may be allocated to purchase one or more QLACs. This limit also applies to traditional IRAs; however, rather than applying to each separate IRA, the limit applies to the aggregate of the individual IRAs. Unlike Roth IRAs, Roth accounts within retirement plans are eligible for QLACs because they are also subject to RMD requirements. ➢ The 25% limit applies differently to plans and to IRAs. Under a plan the 25% limit applies to the most recent valuation of the plan, and under an IRA it applies to the prior 12/31 aggregated IRA balance. In both cases the value includes the present value of any previously purchased QLAC or NQLAC under the plan or the IRAs. The plan account value is also adjusted for any subsequent contributions or distributions. It is unclear whether this same adjustment applies to the 12/31 IRA value.

The bottom line is that individuals can avoid thousands of dollars in unwanted taxes every year. They can leave a portion of their required minimum distributions inside their IRAs or qualified retirement plans; 25% of your IRA money up to a maximum of $125,000 can be deferred until age 85 if you so choose.

Reflux disease treatment side effect risk – why take the chance?

provided

By Craig Zalvan, MD

Heart attacks, pneumonia, diarrhea, and hip fractures – does taking a medication for reflux increase the risk of these problems? Reflux disease has been steadily increasing over the last few decades. Most doctors prescribe a proton-pump inhibitor such as Nexium, Omeprazole, Prevacid or an H2-blocker such as Zantac or Pepcid. These medications can decrease acid secretion and control symptoms. However, they may do so with a price: high cost, long term need, possible drug interactions, and a host of potential side effects. These drugs have been linked to possible problems with calcium absorption and associated fracture risk, diarrhea, pneumonia, and most recently heart attack risk. These risks are likely quite rare and remain unconfirmed, but taking any medication certainly poses a potential risk of a complication or drug interaction. PPIs, proton pump inhibitors, are a class of drugs commonly used to treat acid reflux disease to the tune of over 14 billion

dollars a year in the United States alone. H2-blockers are an older class of drugs also used to block acid secretion in the stomach. Both are used to treat GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn, indigestion, chest discomfort) as well as LPR. LPR, or Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, is reflux that affects the throat and other head and neck structures. The most common symptoms are throat clearing, hoarseness, a lump in the throat, chronic coughing, difficulty swallowing, and post-nasal drip sensation. LPR can also affect sinus disease, dental problems, asthma and other lung problems. Diagnosis of LPR is based on the above symptoms and examination of the throat with a small camera placed through the nose by a laryngologist (ENT doctor specializing in voice, swallow, and cough disorders). The standard dietary and lifestyle changes include: small meals, waiting 3 hours before bed after eating, raising the head of the bed, loose fitting clothing as

well as stopping coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, greasy food, fatty food, fried food, alcohol, salt, and smoking. PPI treatment, when used appropriately, can help prevent prolonged symptoms, ulceration, and even possible progression to cancer. However, PPIs should not be a substitute for diet and lifestyle changes. Lifestyle and diet, drinking alkaline water – pH>8.0 and eating a 90% plant based Mediterranean style diet can effectively control symptoms and prevent progression of reflux disease without medication and all of its possible risks and side effects. Craig Zalvan, MD, FACS, is a laryngologist and Medical Director of the Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center. He is also a partner in the otolaryngology group, ENT Faculty Practice, LLP, as Director of Laryngology: Voice, swallow, and cough disorders. He is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at New York Medical College and Adjunct Professor at Mercy College.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? PAGE 26

Healthcare Healthcare News News -- Westchester Westchester

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
