Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those allyet frequently too-common, debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”
THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.
Dr. Dawn Garcen, MD Family Medicine/Urgent Care, White Plains, NY
“I had been experiencing lower back pain for at least 6-7 months before I had visited Dr. Donath's office. Prior to this, I had tried doing stretches at home, taking some medications, acupuncture, but despite this, things did not improve. In fact, symptoms only progressed and became unbearable. It was so difficult to get out of bed in the morning, work my 12 hour shifts as a physician in Urgent Care and do my daily work outs, which I enjoyed so much. My colleague at work, who is also a physician and patient of Dr. Donath, recommended I see him and I was so glad I did. On my first visit, he patiently listened to my story and examined me carefully. He took his time to discuss possible diagnoses, sent me for an MRI that day, and saw me the next day to discuss results, and potential treatment plan. I listened to his advice and began spinal decompression, which was the best decision I have ever made. After a few visits, my pain started to subside and shortly I became pain-free. Dr. Donath and his staff are knowledgeable and very professional. I am so grateful to them for getting me back to my normal life. I highly recommend him to anyone who is having back pain.” Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY “Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”
Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

OUR VIEW
Some parents in Westchester County are cheering the start of a new school year. However, others may be singing the blues, knowing they’ll be missing leisurely days of easy hugs or spontaneous family outings, as their little ones learn to navigate school hallways and unfamiliar social terrain. Yes, parents can experience the back to school blues, too. If you’re dreading a new school year, there are simple ways to cope with the separation anxiety, even if you can’t watch your little one get on the bus: · Be a school volunteer. There are lots of opportunities for parents to be involved in the school. Plan a school party, sign up as a reading volunteer or math aid or come in on career day to talk about your job. It's also nice for the child. It gives them a sense of being special. · Pursue other interests. Parents who suddenly have time on their hands can embrace interests they may have put off, such as yoga, music lessons, a book club, volunteering at a food bank or signing up for some adult education classes. · Remember, it’s OK to cry. Don’t do it at the child's school, or in front of the child, but it’s OK to cry in private. Any kind of change can engender feelings of loss. Losing day-to-day contact does require a shift and sometimes that's a little uncomfortable. It will hurt, she says, but it will also get better. If you feel more like cheering than crying at the sight of a little one climbing onto the school bus, go for it. Remember, you can do this. Have a great school year! Please feel free to contact me with you thoughts and suggestions at Jim@HealthcareNewsMagazine.com or 845-202-4737.

School Bus
• If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus. • Remind your child to wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the curb. • Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building.
Walking to School
• Make sure your child's walk to school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection. • Identify other children in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school. • Bright-colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers.

Eating During the School Day
• Studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast function better. They do better in school, and have better concentration and more energy. • Choose healthy options to pack in your child's lunch. • Review the monthly cafeteria menus with your child and agree on days to buy healthy school lunches.
When Your Child Is Bullied
Back-to-School Health & Safety Tips
Making the First Day Easier
• Remind your child that there are a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are nervous and make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. • Point out the positive aspects of starting school. Seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Refresh memories about previous years when your child may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because they had a good time. • Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your student can walk to school or ride on the bus. • If it is a new school for your child, attend any available orientations and take an opportunity to tour the school and meet the teacher before the first day.
Backpack Safety
• Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. • Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight. • Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles. • If your school allows, consider a rolling backpack. Source: American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
• Help your child learn how to respond by teaching them how to stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation or to walk away. • Teach your child when and how to ask a trusted adult for help. • Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions. • Monitor your child’s social media or texting interactions so you can identify problems before they get out of hand. continued on next page
Back-to-School continued from previous page
When Your Child Is the Bully
• Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK. • Set firm and consistent limits on your child's aggressive behavior. • Be a positive role mode. Show children they can get what they want without teasing, threatening or hurting someone. • Use effective, non-physical discipline, such as loss of privileges. • Develop practical solutions with the school principal, teachers, counselors, and parents of the children your child has bullied.
Developing Good Homework & Study Habits
• Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. • Schedule ample time for homework. • Establish a household rule that the TV and other electronic distractions stay off during homework time. • Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her. • Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically • If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child's teacher first.
Healthcare News - Westchester September, 2016
• If your child is having difficulty focusing on or completing homework, discuss this with your child's teacher, school counselor, or health care provider. • Some children need help organizing their homework. Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems. • Establish a good sleep routine. Insufficient sleep is associated with lower academic achievement in middle school, high school and college, as well as higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness. Adolescents should get 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night.
PAGE 9
Before and After School Child Care
• During early and middle childhood, children need supervision. A responsible adult should be available to get them ready and off to school in the morning and supervise them after school until you return home from work. • Children approaching adolescence (11- and 12-year-olds) should not come home to an empty house in the afternoon • If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is about being aware and informed PAGE 10
September, 2016
Healthcare News - Westchester
Prostate Cancer is a story of both great heartbreak and great hope. The heartbreak is that each year more than 29,000 men will die of this disease and that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death of U.S. men. However, if diagnosed early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. At ten years post diagnosis, 98 percent of men diagnosed early, remain alive. Prostate cancer is an extremely complex disease—multiple subtypes of this cancer exist, some aggressive and lethal, others non-aggressive and non-life-threatening. The vast majority of prostate cancer occurs as an indolent, slow-growing form of the disease that poses little threat to men’s lifespans.Learn about prostate cancer and talk to your doctor before you decide to get tested or treated. Symptoms Men can have different symptoms for prostate cancer. Some men do not have symptoms at all. Some symptoms of prostate cancer are difficulty starting urination, frequent urination (especially at night), weak or interrupted flow of urine, and blood in the urine or semen.
Risk Factors There is no way to know for sure if you will get prostate cancer. Men have a greater chance of getting prostate cancer if they are 50 years old or older, are African-American, or have a father, brother, or son who has had prostate cancer. African-American men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from the disease than white men with prostate cancer.
Screening Tests Two tests are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer— Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test: PSA is a substance made by the prostate. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood, which may be higher in men who have prostate cancer. However, other conditions such as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged but noncancerous prostate), prostate infections, and certain medical procedures also may increase PSA levels. Digital rectal exam (DRE): A doctor, nurse, or other health care professional places a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size, shape, and hardness of the prostate gland.
Should You Get Screened? Not all medical experts agree that screening for prostate cancer will save lives. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against PSA-based screening for men who do not have symptoms. The potential benefit of prostate cancer screening is finding cancer early, which may make treatment work better. Potential risks include— • False negative test results (the test says you do not have cancer when you do). • False positive test results (the test says you have cancer when you do not). • Follow-up tests such as a biopsy to diagnose cancer. • Treatment of prostate cancers that may never affect your health. • Mild to serious side effects from treatment of prostate cancer.
Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening before getting tested. Sources:www.pcf.org, www.cdc.gov

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
One in 3 children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The good news? Childhood obesity can be prevented. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for kids to eat healthier and get more active. Make a difference for kids: Spread the word about strategies for preventing childhood obesity and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved. How can National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month make a difference?
Working together, states, communities, schools, child care providers, and parents can help make healthier food, beverages, and physical activity the easy choice for children and adolescents to help prevent childhood obesity.
We can all use this month to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic and show people how they can take steps toward a solution.
QUALITY HEALT TH PLANS
• Encourage families to make small changes, like keeping fresh fruit within reach or going on a family walk after dinner.
for everyone.
Here are just a few ideas:
• Motivate teachers and administrators to make schools healthier. Help them provide healthy food and beverage options and daily physical activities for students.
• Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by supporting programs to prevent childhood obesity.
• Host a community event where families can be active while learning about local health resources.
• Become a partner of We Can!, a national movement to help children ages 8 to 13 stay at a healthy weight. Source:healthfinder.gov

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates
Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.
“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless By Dale McKnight
Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter. And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize. “August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester. Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns. She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services. Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia). She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health. A member of the American Hair Loss Council, Diane also completed the first-ever Certified Hair Coach program in the U.S., based on a training process launched by Dr. Bauman. “Studying and educating others about the scalp has always been my passion,” she says. “My motto is: ‘A healthy scalp is a landscape to healthy hair.’” She adds: “People know that taking care of their gums is important for healthy teeth. It’s the same for the scalp – for healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp.” With a simple scalp analysis, she can determine the overall health of the scalp, and recommend a customized treatment to help each client look and feel their best. What triggers hair problems? “Some causes are genetic,” she says. “And most people don’t know that hereditary hair loss is manageable. The sooner you address it, the better the results.” She adds: “Other factors like chemicals and products we put on our hair, chlorine from pools, allergies to certain substances, or the environment can also play a role. Each client’s case is different, which is what makes my work so interesting.”
When treating clients, Diane uses various patented hair care products, therapeutic scalp massage and, in some cases, a series of FDA-cleared laser therapy treatments to stimulate hair growth. “Low-light laser therapy is good for certain scalp conditions such as some types of dermatitis and early stages of thinning hair,” notes Diane, who underwent special training to use the instruments. “It can help increase density and rejuvenate hair. It’s not a magic wand that magically regrows a full head of hair, but it makes a noticeable improvement in many cases.” Starting treatment for hair problems sooner rather than later will increase the chances of better results, she adds. “Restoring your hair can have an amazing effect on your life. From boosting your confidence to increasing your attractiveness, you’ll experience a world of difference when you do.” Diane can be reached at 914-222-0731.

Proud John A. Coleman School graduates Elizabeth (left) and Rose The John A. Coleman School’s White Plains campus graduated a total of 59 students on Thursday, June 30, 2016, including eight children from its inclusive nursery school, Children’s Place, as part of their 2016 Graduation Ceremony. The ceremony was attended by students, their loved ones, staff from the Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center and, of course, our friends and supporters in the community. White Plains City Councilwoman Milagros Lecouna was on hand, as were White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David E. Chong and Greenburgh Police Officer and member of the Greenburgh Police Benevolent Association David Wagman. The event kicked off with a graduation procession with all of our graduates marching to Pomp and Circumstance. After, this year’s commencement speakers, Dr. Sherlita Amler, Commissioner of Westchester County’s Department of Health, and Brittany A. Reeves, her daughter, addressed our attendees. Both mother and daughter reflected on Reeves’ diagnosis of spina bifida and shared anecdotes of their family’s challenges, triumphs and, most importantly, their unwavering perseverance. “I am a 32-year-old graduate student,” Reeves began.

“About 28 years ago, I graduated from a similar preschool program. The Early Intervention and preschool services I received gave me a firm foundation to build my life upon,” she said. “If you ask me what my secret to a happy life is,” Reeves continued, “it would be to first know your strengths and build on them. Second, keep trying toward your goals. Last, appreciate the people who make it all possible,” she said. This last piece of advice rang true for Joana Ayala, a graduate from the Class of 2003 and the recipient of this year’s St. Elizabeth Seton Children’s Foundation Alumni Award. Ayala shared sentiments of gratitude for the teachers, therapists and staff at both the Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center who helped transform her into the courageous and successful person she is today. Ayala will be attending Manhattanville College in the fall. “Graduation is such an important day for us,” said Maureen Tomkiel, Executive Director of the Coleman School. “It’s a day to celebrate the achievements of our young graduates and recognize their family members and our team here who helped them reach this milestone,” she said. “We know that there will

Phelps celebrates grand opening of new lobby PAGE 24
September, 2016
A milestone celebration was held recently at Phelps Hospital to mark the official opening of its new main entrance and beautifully appointed lobby. State Senator Terrence Murphy presented a congratulatory proclamation, and one was also received from State Senator David Carlucci. Guests included local community leaders and residents, donors, physicians and hospital staff. High above the grand entrance, on the façade of the hospital’s medical services building, an eyecatching sign displaying the Phelps Hospital/Northwell Health logo drew much attention. Northwell is the health system that Phelps joined 18 months ago, and Phelps was the first Northwell hospital to have the system’s sign installed on one of its buildings A special guest at the celebration was David Rockefeller, representing his family, whose steady support of Phelps dates back 125 years, when his great uncle William Rockefeller funded the opening of a single-room, three-bedded facility known as Tarrytown Hospital. In 1906, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller,

Sr., made the first major pledge to support local healthcare, and his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., became active in the affairs and finances of Tarrytown Hospital and another small hospital that opened in Ossining around 1907. In 1949, in response to increased demand for hospital services, David’s brother, John D. Rockefeller III, led the initiative to build a new, larger and centrally located hospital. The Rockefeller family ultimately donated $1,225,000 for the new hospital, with the condition that the amount be matched by the community. Over the next two years, area residents, businesses and physicians gave the matching funds – demonstrating their strong desire to have the new community hospital, which opened in 1956 as Phelps Memorial Hospital. As Phelps Board Chairman, Richard Sinni, expressed during his presentation, “The Rockefellers have been very important partners of Phelps. Without their contributions, this hospital would not exist.” Mr. Sinni also thanked the Villages of Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Ossining and the Town of Mount Pleasant for
their continued support, and he saluted the hospital volunteers and Phelps Auxiliary for their immeasurable contributions to the hospital. A seating area in the lobby was dedicated to one long-time auxilian and volunteer, Eva Marie Dahling of Sleepy Hollow and her late husband, Gunther. The hospital’s dramatic lobby and modern signage herald a new era; bridging the stand-alone hospital that opened 60 years ago with the Rockefellers’ backing, to Phelps Hospital today, which continues to fulfill its mission as a community hospital with the enduring support of local residents as well as Northwell Health. “Together with Northwell, Phelps is sending the message that it will be here for generations to come,” said Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett, who attended the ceremony on behalf of County Executive Rob Astorino. The importance of community hospitals was highlighted by Dennis Connors, Sr. VP, Regional Executive Director of Northwell Health, who noted that in addition to providing easily accessible medical services, community hospitals produce an economic benefit locally.

Thousands of adults and children are expected to participate in the 20th annual Family Health & Fitness Day USA (FHFD) held on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Families will participate at locations throughout the country. Events will take place at community sites including hospitals, health clubs, YMCAs, state & county health departments, park districts, houses of worship, and schools. Organized as a public/private partnership by the Health Information Resource Centersm, Family Health & Fitness Day USA was conceived, in part, as a response to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health. This landmark report made it clear that health benefits can be obtained from moderate physical activity on a regular basis. In addition, the Surgeon General's Report stated that the majority of Americans, and especially children from 12 to 21, are not exercising nearly enough. This year's programs will include exercise demonstrations, health fairs, family walks and more. Most programs involve family activities as well as education and information about health and fitness topics. "We are now entering our 20th year as a national family health and fitness event," says Pat Henze, FHFD director. "Our goals for Family Health & Fitness Day are to emphasize the importance and fun of regular physical activity and to encourage families of all ages to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in their communities."

Montefiore Einstein Physician-Researcher awarded $4.2 Million National Institutes of Health grant to advance asthma care
New research program aims to increase the use of national asthma management guidelines and improve health outcomes for kids
Marina Reznik, M.D., M.S., attending pediatrician, Division of General Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, (CHAM), and associate professor of Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine has been awarded a $4.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to launch a five-year research study to increase adherence to national asthma management guidelines and improve clinical outcomes for children with the chronic illness. “Asthma disproportionately affects low-income, minority children living in inner cities such as the Bronx,” said Dr. Reznik. “The use of national guidelines by healthcare providers reduces asthma-related complications by 70 percent, yet these guidelines are not used consistently. The goal of this effort is to elicit an indepth conversation between providers and patients/families that will enable us to more effectively manage children’s asthma and curb care inconsistencies.”
The new NIH grant will allow Dr. Reznik to lead a rigorous randomized trial in 20 Montefiore Medical Group outpatient sites to find out why national asthma management guidelines aren’t being used. The goal is to improve clinical outcomes of children ages 2-12 years old with persistent or uncontrolled asthma. The study, which launches this month, will use new Electronic Health Record software to alert doctors, through enhanced computer prompts, to ask a nationally recognized set of questions to assess asthma severity and control. The prompts will also guide physicians in their decision-making process on how to best address and control the patient’s asthma. In addition, caregivers of children with persistent severe asthma will receive enhanced education, care coordination and support to overcome barriers to guideline-based care.
“Dr. Reznik is an exceptionally talented physician-scientist who excels in both her clinical and academic roles,” said Philip O. Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., chief operating officer at Montefiore and professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology & Population Health at Einstein, who has served as a mentor throughout Dr. Reznik’s career. “We are privileged that she continues to advance her career at Montefiore and Einstein.” The team-based project aims to help providers adopt asthma care guidelines more effectively and efficiently. The project will also assess whether a practical system change might help children and caregivers in urban areas adhere to the guidelines. This meant a great deal to me for my Mom and Aunt. How to provide compassionate and competent home care for my aging Mother and Aunt began to take over more and more of my life and time. In this trying time, I wanted and needed was a way to provide them with home care (I promised I would never put them in a nursing or old age home and they would stay in the home till the end). After searching I found a way to do IT! They did, Stay in the home that they loved until the end… with compassionate caring attendants, we selected and with all the nursing care they needed. The other challenge was to do all this while protecting their hard earned assets of a home, and savings, and other assets from retirement and pensions earned over a lifetime of work and protect those savings from government claw backs.
And we didn’t have five years to wait it out. No, the need was then not down the road. I found a good solid legal way out for us and I can help you do the same for your family. In the end, they had compassionate care with people we chose, who were paid a salary, who got vacation pay, health insurance and other benefits, all paid for by Uncle Sam. And there was no five years “lookback”, as with certified nursing homes, only thirty (30) days from setting up the plan for qualified home care. As a lawyer dealing in Elder Law and Trusts and Estates, let me help you to find the way out of your woods for your elders and your family. Why Buy Whole Life Insurance for your Dependent Children…? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC
Many of my clients often ask me if they should buy life insurance on their newborns and small children. The answer is unquestionably… yes. If the client has the foresight and extra dollars, it is a great idea to establish these policies early on in your child’s life, especially since there is limited or no medical underwriting depending upon their age at issue. Once children start to visit doctors, medical records may have to be collected. People forget that life insurance is all about the long haul and the sooner you buy these contracts and the longer you fund them, the better they perform financially.
The vast majority of carriers refuse to issue term insurance policies taken out on small children due to the lack of insurable interest. Most will only issue permanent products such as whole life, universal life or variable life. Since a term insurance policy is designed to cover a specific need or temporary financial liability, carriers cannot rationalize the purchase of this type of policy for a child since determining that liability is virtually impossible. There are a great many advantages of your children owning permanent Whole Life insurance: 12345-
You the parent or guardian control the policy until such time that you decide to transfer ownership. You are purchasing the life insurance at the most competitive rate due to the child’s age. You are establishing your child’s insurability immediately in case they become chronically ill. You can pay these policies up in 20 years so your child does not have to pay the premiums forever. You are buying a policy that your child can own and utilize for the rest of their lives.
A s k A n
Let’s look at an example of how a policy purchased for a young child compares to a policy purchased by an adult:
Annual Premium
Cumulative Premium in 20 years
Initial Death Benefit

Other benefits to your child owning permanent Whole Life insurance: 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3

$100,000
$124.3491
A permanent lifelong death benefit to age 120. A Whole Life insurance policy locks in the premium and ensures the child has coverage, even if they get sick. A Waiver of Premium Rider guarantees premiums are paid to age 60 if child becomes permanently disabled. The buildup of a tax-deferred cash value savings vehicle inside the insurance policy. Discretionary access to tax-free income before age 59½ without a credit check or lender approval2. Most policies are established as tax-free private pension plans with no IRS reporting ever. The death benefit is paid to beneficiaries triple tax free, most likely your grandchildren by the way! The policy can be collateralized at any time, like when your child is buying a car or even purchasing a home. In most states, the cash value of a juvenile life insurance policy is protected from creditors and lawsuits.
Please note that many insurers have requirements that parents and/or custodians own the same or several times the amount of life insurance coverage on themselves before polices will be issued. The rationale is that the parent or breadwinner of the family has an insurable interest that supersedes the child’s need for coverage3.
For more information about Juvenile Life Insurance planning please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free 877-676-9900. PAGE 35
More than 600 people were on hand for the 37th Annual Westchester Medical Center Gala to benefit Westchester Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Behavioral Health Center, all members of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network. The Gala was held earlier this month at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. The evening’s highlight was the surprise appearance of Taylor Rose Clark, 19, of East Rockaway, New York, during the presentation to Physician Honoree David Spielvogel, M.D., Westchester Medical Center’s Program Director of Heart Transplantation. With her heart failing, Clark spent four months at Westchester Medical Center earlier this year awaiting a transplant. When a heart became available, Dr. Spielvogel led the team that performed the procedure, saving Clark’s life. She was home less than two weeks after her transplant and Clark’s appearance at the Gala came just seven weeks after the procedure. NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital receives Get With The GuidelinesStroke Gold Plus and Target Stroke Honor Roll Awards American Heart Association Awards recognize NYP/Lawrence Hospital for quality stroke care Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated
N e w Yo r k - P r e s b y t e r i a n / Lawrence Hospital has received the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. Hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive, 12-month periods and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The GuidelinesStroke Quality measures to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. “It is important for our community to have a hospital that is nationally recognized for treatment of stroke here in lower Westchester, minutes from home, and for the public to know that we are here,” said NYP/Lawrence Hospital President Michael Fosina. “I commend our Stroke Team for its dedication and congratulate them on this recognition.’’
To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability. NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams follow the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. “The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize NYP/Lawrence Hospitalfor its commitment to stroke care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines
at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program.” For more information, please visit www.nyp.org

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature
September, 2016
Healthcare News - Westchester
After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”
At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
