Finally a new stor y about

Lion!

© Sebastian Hoppe

Lion has helped countless children who didn’t know how to write get interested in the alphabet. Now all those who have trouble with numbers can look forward to a new story.

Martin Baltscheit, born in 1965 in Düsseldorf, studied Communication Design at the Folkwangschule Essen. Since then the multi-talent has worked as a comic artist, illustrator, author of children’s books, prose, audio plays and for the theater, as an actor and as audio book narrator. Martin Baltscheit has received numerous awards, including the German Youth Literature Prize last year. He and his family live in Düsseldorf.

The beautiful lioness is kissing someone else! The lion with the sharp teeth can roar as loudly as he can – it doesn’t help at all. Those who can’t count to three are in trouble. Therefore the lion sets out to solve the mystery of numbers and a bit of calculating helps him to win back the beautiful lioness’ heart … Martin Baltscheit has succeeded in creating the ideal sequel about the well-loved bigmouth.

A fantastic animals’ carnival frolics through town …

© Markus C. Hurek

To the delight of the town inhabitants and to the amazement of readers, these hilarious animal figures parade through the streets. Cartoonist Peter Menne presents a wonderfully peculiar picture book debut.

Peter Menne was born in 1962 as a Westphalien, without much effort on his part. His professional career began in the art room at college in Bielefeld, where every top model became a cartoon through his pen. Today he lives with his wife and two children in Potsdam. He does illustrations for magazines, school books and children’s books and designs posters, advertising and cartoons.

Unbelievable, what tricks the dogs perform on their unicycles or the zebras on their rollerskates! Those who don’t see the cool city rats ride by on their motorcycles have really missed a spectacle. Next the fire brigade snails come by – and what did those elks think up now? Simply hysterical! This book teeming full of figures tells tales without words, and yet you will hear all sorts of booms and bangs, cackling and giggling, moos and meows when gazing at the pages.

A poetical snowstorm

Lilli is sitting at the window. And whereas the world outside is getting whiter and whiter, visitors start to arrive – a horse, a bear and a dragon with a long scarf come by, and a snow girl in a carriage, a spirit of the air and many more. Lilli’s snow figures become snow stories – and finally, for Lilli and her readers, a whole world is created out of snow. Heinz Janisch’s poetic texts tend to linger quite a while before readers feel like turning to the next page. Søren Jessen’s strong brush strokes invite you to follow Lilli’s tracks in the snow and to continue spinning her tales. A wonderful picture book for quiet hours in the winter season!

A pack of thieves lives in the forest of Toulouse

Katrin Stangl, born in 1977, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where she was a student of Volker Pfüller’s. She received numerous awards for her illustrations, including the Design Award from the Büchergilde Gutenberg and a grant for picture books from Troisdorf. She lives and works as a freelance artist with her family in Cologne.

Thieves are a big topic for small children. And »The Thieves of Toulouse« is the classic book read in daycare centers throughout Germany, a book children simply can’t get enough of. Katrin Stangl has found impressive illustrations with intense colours to go with the story, which still leave enough room for children’s own imaginations. Day after day the song about the Thieves of Toulouse is sung and played in daycare centers (also called »The Forest of Toulouse«) – a wild bunch of thieves is hiding among the trees, waiting for people they can steal things from. And finally someone comes along, on a high horse. »Give us your purse, or we will kill you!« And at the same moment the police arrive – and take the thieves with them. »There are no more thieves in the forest of Toulouse …«

As a partisan and member of the »White Rose«, Sophie Scholl (1921–1943) became a legend. Her courage and dauntlessness are even more amazing considering that she was an enthusiastic Hitler Youth leader just a few years beforehand. New sources reveal that Sophie Scholl was more complicated and enthralling than previously known to be.

Y Ideal to present as a gift

The Scholl family was split in two after 1933 – whereas the parents regarded Hitler as a dangerous »rat catcher«, their children were fascinated by the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädchen). However Sophie Scholl also believed in freedom and altruism and felt more and more disgusted by the contempt shown by the NS regime. Her boyfriend, a young officer named Fritz Hartnagel, with whom she had a close, but difficult relationship, told her about his gruesome experiences on the East front. Shortly before her arrest on February 18, 1943, after handing out leaflets on the White Rose with her brother Hans at the Munich University, she said, »So many people are dying for the Regime – it is time, that someone does something to stop it.« She was executed at the age of 21. A portrait showing Sophie Scholl from various angles, making her come to life as a person and not just concentrating on her role as a partisan. Maren Gottschalk evaluated many documents, and also letters and diaries that were previously not available for viewing. She was able to receive valuable information from talks with Sophie’s sister Elisabeth Hartnagel.

Maren Gottschalk, born in 1962, studied History and Political Science and lives and works as a freelance journalist and author in Leverkusen. She has published highly praised biographies on Nelson Mandela, Astrid Lindgren and most recently a biography on Frida Kahlo entitled Die Farben meiner Seele (The Colours of My Soul) with Beltz.

When I turned 18 and was released from the youth center, I moved back to Prenzlauer Berg and found that my mother’s restaurant had been turned into a shoe store. One day I entered the rooms of the former restaurant, and decided at that moment to write about my parents’ life.« Klaus Kordon on his new novel

When the two meet, they both have lived half their lives already. Lisa Gerber, a waitress who always has had to be there for others, and in the meanwhile has her own restaurant and two children. Bertie Lenz, who grew up in an orphanage and works as a mason, living as a lodger. When he runs into trouble with the SA, Lisa helps him flee. Then one day he is standing on her doorstep – and refuses to leave. But they don’t have much time for romance when the war begins in 1939. Bertie is called to serve and has to go to Russia. A time of waiting begins for Lisa, and her only memory of Bertie is a baby boy, Manne, and a small, colourful tin merry-go-round that can be wound up …

Klaus Kordon, born in 1943, lives in Berlin. He is amongst the most renowned authors of children’s and youth books whose work has received numerous awards. His latest novels are Kiko and the historical novel Im Spinnennetz (In the Spider’s Web).

You can do it yourself! An unconventional, surprising book for girls with directions for all kinds of things. There are many ideas and instructions describing what is possible and how to go about it. Whether it be planting a vegetable garden, hooking up a hi-fi system, repairing a bike, mending holes, putting a blog online, doing volunteer work or cooking for more than ten friends – you will find out how to do it in this book. You need not do everything, but it doesn’t hurt to know how. And it’s really not so hard to attach the shelf to the wall when you have good instructions. Or to record a radio show, or to get a band together, or to bake party invitations. You can also read how to grow a potato plant and organize a birthday party or to do volunteer work for those less fortunate than you. Sometimes you just need directions and the encouragement to start doing something – alone or with your girlfriends.

Every child can join in a conversation about food. Why do I like certain things? What does it taste like? What kind of foods do I dislike? But it really starts to get interesting when, together with children, a closer look is taken at the subject and what is going on in the kitchen. That’s what this book is all about – finding out what kinds of foods there are, where they come from and how they are best prepared. There are practical tips for a healthy diet, for shopping and buying ahead and what kind of kitchen utensils are good to have on hand. And there’s even more, such as basic information about the effects of combining certain foods plus extraordinary experiments from the kitchen lab, recipes to try out and lots of encouragement to change recipes and create your own combinations. At the end of the book you will find a small kitchen glossary with all the methods, utensils and ingredients you need. Colourful, entertaining and full of vitamins!

Anke M. Leitzgen is both a journalist and author. She was the chief editor of miss VOGUE and a writer for the SZ-Magazin and ZEIT-Magazin. She has worked writing screen plays and filmed documentaries. But her favorite thing to do is to write books for children and youths. www.anke-m-leitzgen.de. Lisa Rienermann is a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. She loves to mix categories – when typography and photography hold hands, text turns into images that tell stories... Her work has already been published internationally and received awards as well. www.lisarienermann.com.

Children have lots of questions. What do the subway drivers do when they have to go to the bathroom? Do cobras poison themselves if they bite their tongues? What is Barbie’s last name? Jürgen Brater listened to kids and collected the most quirky questions about science, everyday problems, idioms or comics – and provided answers that are easy to understand and entertaining to read. Let’s assume it is raining cats and dogs. How do you stay drier – by running as fast as you can, or just walking slowly? Or when doing arts and crafts – why does super glue make everything stick together, but it doesn’t stick inside the tube? And in the summertime at the lake – are there tides? Answers to these and 77 other extraordinary and amusing children’s questions are provided by Jürgen Brater in this book. As a passionate collector of the bizarre, it’s only natural that he can explain things precisely. Oh, and by the way – this is the answer to the rain question: No matter how fast you move, the same number of raindrops will hit your head, chest, stomach and legs. If you stand perfectly still, then only your head will get hit, so you won’t get as wet. But then again, it depends on how long it rains …
