GCSE JOY!

Despite more demanding GCSEs this year, the quality of the grades remain fantastic with over 20% of all grades awarded were at the new 9 or 8 grade (equivalent to A*) and 43% of all of the grades were at 9-7 (equivalent to A). The girls, their parents and all of the staff at Belvedere should be really pleased with themselves.

Well done to all of our Year 11 students on achieving an outstanding set of GCSE grades.

It was wonderful to see so many happy faces in school on Results Day. We are all looking forward to working with the vast majority of this cohort of students in the Sixth Form. Well done to all of you and you can really relax now for the last part of the holidays!!

Dementia UK assembly Miss Foster and Mrs Brown were delighted to welcome to the academy Mrs Green from Dementia UK and Admiral Nurses for our assembly in June. The Year 10 students of IT were honoured to have been approached by Dementia UK & our local Admiral nurses to help them with a real life investigation into what secondary aged students know about Dementia. This project fitted perfectly with their GCSE work for Citizenship and, as the first secondary school to be asked, we were keen to give it 100% and showcase the fantastic ideas and ICT skills of our students in making a real difference to lives. During this academic year, Year 10 students designed surveys in their IT lessons and asked Y7 and Y8 suitable questions to analyse what they needed to know more about regarding Dementia. They also produced presentations and animations and shared this work with Mrs Green and her team at the Cooperative who are sponsoring the project. The students in Y7 and Y8 were asked to complete the online survey designed by the Year 10s in their IT Computer Science lessons. The Year 10 classes then analysed the survey results and shared some of their key findings with Dementia UK.

At Belvedere, 34% of responses from Y8 and 30% of Y7 said they had the experience of supporting someone, which shows us that dementia not only affects the person’s life but the friends and family surrounding them. Mrs Green visited the assembly to see some Y10 students present their findings to Lower School students and share with them a presentation of key information they wanted to know about Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Mrs Green described the IT lesson work sent by the Y10 students to Dementia UK as “absolutely brilliant” and explained how they would now use it to create videos and animations with their sponsors, the Cooperative. Our work at Belvedere with Dementia UK is ongoing and Miss Foster is happy to share that two Year 7 students will even have their voices used on the animation being produced by the IT department at the Cooperative for Dementia UK. Watch this space for more news on the excellent work our IT and Computer Science students are doing with Dementia UK. If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend, or finding out more please visit https:// www.alzheimers.org.uk/ or https://twitter. com/DementiaUk. Mrs Green has requested to feature our assembly on Twitter!

Chinese Dragon Masks At The Belvedere Academy Chinese joined forces with the Art Department and jointly planned a lesson that taught a group of Year 7s how to create ferocious Dragon masks. The Chinese Dragon Dance (舞龙) is a famous tradition that features in various Chinese festivals, especially Chinese New Year. Dragons (龙) are the symbol of the emperor and through performing the dragon dance it is believed that this will bring good luck to the people. A team of dancers manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles positioned at regular intervals along the length of the dragon. The dance team simulates the imagined movements of this river spirit. The students really enjoyed the novelty of learning more about Chinese Culture through Art and this hands on activity, which required them to work together as a team. The masks they have created will decorate the Chinese classroom. Hopefully we will be able to work together in the future on wonderful projects like this.

Charities gain from lab coat payments Once again, several charities have benefited from your 20p. This year £164.00 has been shared between various charities some of which were; Children in Need, Sports Aid, Cancer Research, Autism Society, Claire House and, at Christmas, selection boxes were bought to send to Alder Hey. So a big thank-you to all the girls who paid 20p to borrow a lab coat. Well done!

Paris Trip Going to Paris was one of the best experiences ever. Although I was apprehensive going to a different country without my family, I do not regret going. I was able to use the French vocabulary that I already knew as well as learning new phrases. Visiting the Eiffel Tower was one of my most enjoyable moments as well as visiting Park Asterix where we had the chance to bond with one another and go on the fun rides. I have made so many memories with my friends that I will not forget. Millie H, Year 8 We had the most amazing time in Paris. We started the trip very early in the morning but travelling through the night was worth it. Getting the opportunity to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Le Louvre and doing a Seine river cruise were all amazing experiences, but what I loved most was going to the top of Paris at Montparnasse Tower. Seeing the sunset and all the iconic buildings from so high up was incredible. On the final day, we had two options. To take the steps to Montmartre or to take the funicular. It was a race to the top but we won!!! I definitely want to return to Paris in the future. J’ai adoré la visite - c’était incroyable! Jasmine P, Year 9

Meet your new Head Girl Team... Hello everyone, we are your new Head Girl Team 2018/2019 and we would like to introduce ourselves to you all. As a Head Girl Team, we aim to do more school events such as the ‘Great Get Together’. What we want is for you all to enjoy your time at Belvedere as much as we all have so far and to create lifelong memories. We want to listen to what the students here at Belvedere have to say. It is ultimately your school experience that we want to enhance in any way we can, while providing you with support and opportunities that will make your time here both useful and enjoyable. We will ensure that all students have the confidence to take up any opportunity that

10

comes their way. We want to connect and collaborate with the school community to create a positive learning environment where all students feel welcome and accepted and hope to do this by reaching out to the pupils themselves to find out what we can do to improve life at Belvedere. We aim to support and encourage all years at Belvedere to ensure that they strive for excellence. My name is Alex McCaldon-McNally and I am currently studying History, Sociology and Psychology. I really enjoy all three of my subjects as even though they are similar in the fact that they are all essay and evaluative topics they all have different perspectives on society in modern day and the past. I have always had a keen interest in sport ever since I was little, so after Year 13 I am hoping to study Sport and Exercise Psychology at Loughborough University.

Therefore, in the future I am aiming to get a PhD in Sports Psychology and become a fully qualified Sports Psychologist. As well as my studies, I want to carry on with my Lacrosse and hopefully progress to the Senior England team. Most of my hobbies include sport in some way. My parents encouraged me to play as many sports as possible when I was younger until I found the right sport for me to really progress in. I have taken part in: tennis, golf, cricket, dance, gymnastics, netball, athletics and then I found lacrosse. My only party trick is my death drops that many of my friends enjoy! My favourite food, by far, is definitely katsu curry, especially from Yo Sushi. If I could be anyone for a day I would be a Year 7 because then I would have the chance to go back to the beginning and relive what it was like, even if it was for only one day.

helping create lifelong memories My name is India Mavers and I study English Literature, History, Physics and Art at A-Level, and I hope to continue studying English Lit at degree level in university. Outside of school activities, I go to ballet and yoga classes a few times a week, but I spend most of my time reading. My favourite food is definitely bread. Bread is always there for you. I don’t think I have any hidden talents so making my tongue into a flower shape might be my only party trick. Celebrities definitely take their audience for granted, so if I could be anyone else for the day, I would just be anyone famous and use the platform to talk about something important. Hello, I’m Mariam Omar and I take Biology, Chemistry and English Literature for A Level. After I leave the Belvedere Sixth Form, I would like to study Medicine at university so that I can become a psychiatrist. Outside

of school, I volunteer as a Young Leader for my local Cub Scouts group and manage a writing/book reviewing blog. I also love to sew and hope to design and make my own prom dress. My favourite food would be my grandmother’s couscous dish because it’s absolutely delicious! If I had a party trick, it would be my accent impressions (my friends say that they’re good but I’m not too sure). Finally, if I were to be anyone for the day, it would probably be Ahlam Mosteghanemi (a renowned Algerian novelist/poet) because despite all the setbacks she faced, she remained resilient and her beautifully written novels reflect this.

greatest football team and I think it would be interesting to see how a football club of that stature is run. My name is Abi Kain. I am currently studying Chemistry, Biology and Sport BTEC. I thoroughly enjoy my subjects. After life at Belvedere I hope to study Physiotherapy at the University of Liverpool. You could describe me as an outdoors person. I think being brought up on the dusty streets of South Africa probably has something to do with it. My hobbies include star gazing, hiking and several sports such as swimming and hockey. I do love travelling and exploring new places and cultures.

My name is Emily Hagan, I am studying Biology, Chemistry and History, and after Belvedere I want to go to university and do Medicine to become a doctor. I am enjoying coaching swimming on Sundays and I love watching football and supporting Liverpool FC.

I adore all kinds of fruit, a Sunday roast, and ice-cream, especially cookie dough. My party trick is a walking handstand. Lastly, if I could be someone for a day I would want to be Heidi Baker who is like a modernday Mother Theresa in Mozambique. She has housed, clothed and fed thousands of orphans and seen miracles.

My favourite food is either chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream; I can’t decide. My party trick is that I can touch my nose using my tongue. If I could be anyone for a day, I would be Jürgen Klopp because I would be the manager of the world’s

My name is Lauren Evans and I am currently studying Spanish, French and Chemistry. I am interested in pursuing a career in translating or interpreting. I enjoy playing sports and going out with my friends. My favourite food is anything with ketchup

Hi, I’m Lily Davies and I study English Literature, Biology and Drama for A Level. After Belvedere I’m hoping to study English Literature and Language at university, maybe afterwards becoming a teacher or a journalist. I love Performing Arts and love performing in theatre productions!

Hi, I’m Isabella Byrne and I am currently studying four A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Music. After Belvedere I’m hoping to study Chemistry at university, and hope to eventually enter a career in the Biochemical industry. Outside of lessons, I have a huge passion for music (as many of you already know!)- I enjoy playing the clarinet, singing in the academy Chamber Choir, and teaching myself how to play other instruments. I also love to read, explore different genres of music, play with my pets, and volunteer as a young leader at my local Brownie/Guide unit. My favourite

My party trick is that I can recite the entire periodic table from memory, but things start to get fuzzy around Einsteinium if I don’t think about it for a while! And if I could be anybody for a day, I would choose Ada Lovelace because I admire her incredible analytical mind, but also her determination to build her reputation in the field of Mathematics during a time when women had very little in the way of a scientific education and a respected intellectual status.

food is probably blueberry pancakes (and that’s totally not because I’m craving a Tavern breakfast as I write this).

Emily

My favourite food is a tricky one, but I think I’d have to say either pasta or cheesecake. I don’t really have a party trick, but I can tie a shoe lace in under 3 seconds, so I guess

that’s kind of impressive. If I could be one person for the day I’d probably be Beyoncé.

The Belvedere Academy’s first Royal Navy Cadets: All aboard! At the beginning of the year, following a very robust application process, Belvedere was given funding to start the first Belvedere Academy Royal Navy Cadet Force. This was a fantastic achievement as only 25 schools have been chosen nationally to do this through the Cadet Expansion Programme. Led by Ms Speed, Ms Parker and Miss Cooper (who have all taken part in officer training, gaining the rank of Sub-Lieutenant) the unit will begin in September 2018, with the official opening being in January 2019. One of the first jobs was to recruit the required number of cadets and, following an exciting launch assembly led by Taff Urie, our Area Instructor, we were overwhelmed with applications from students wanting to break the statistic (that has existed for over 50 years) that only 11% of all Royal Navy jobs are taken by women. Once the 28 cadets were chosen and measured up for their uniforms, their training quickly began with a Swim Test and an Experience Day at Southport Waterside Lodge where they learnt basic sailing skills and built up their team working skills through group kayaking. We’re very excited to see the cadets make their first appearance in September in uniform and hope that this will be a chance for them to consider what the armed forces can do for them in the future.

Edge Hill University’s Art Competition The Belvedere Academy has been entered for Edge Hill University’s Art Competition this term. Students at the academy had to research a traditional Chinese festival and create an image that depicts a scene at the festival. The pictures and paintings that the students created truly showcased their artistic talents. It was incredibly difficult to choose the three pieces that would be selected to enter the competition as the quality of all the submitted pieces was very high and I would like to thank the Art Department for their support. The three pieces that were sent to Edge Hill University to be exhibited and compete against pieces created by students at other schools in the North-West were created by the following artists: Isabel Burke, Erin McStraw, Millie Dickinson.

A selection of pieces of art that were also of outstanding quality and unfortunately not submitted to the university but won runner up in the school’s inter-tutor Chinese Art Competition were created by the following students: Jemima Ross-Williams, Ayesha Hyder-Burney, Ashtyn Barlow, Amakai O’Brian, Phoebe Jones, Farah Bakkali A selection of students who also demonstrated their creative talents in this competition are as follows: Amiee-Jo Sanderson, Anna O’Brian, Raine Vickers, Cara Tompson , Anna O’Brian, Eve Wilkinson. Thank you to all of the students who took part in the competition and for the time you invested in your artwork! Your pieces are inspirational!

Trip to the Beijing Chinese Restaurant All of the students who entered the recent Chinese Art Competition at The Belvedere Academy were invited to attend an allinclusive reward trip to the Beijing Chinese Restaurant in the heart of Liverpool. This was an excellent opportunity for students to try authentic Chinese dishes, most of which they had never tried before and through this trip they also found out more about Chinese dining etiquette, customs and traditions. The students on the trip aspired to speak as much Chinese as possible with the owner and waiters at the restaurant. The restaurant owner praised them for their confidence and communication skills. Furthermore, all of the students persevered and succeeded in using chopsticks and tried all of the delicious foods that were in front of them. Some of the dishes we ordered included: 宫宝鸡丁 - Kung Pao Chicken 鱼香肉丝 - Yu-Shiang Shredded Pork 蛋炒饭 - Egg Fried Rice 西红柿炒鸡蛋 – Stir Fried Tomato with Eggs 锅贴 – Fried Dumplings

14

‘I loved today it was so much fun eating with chopsticks and having Chinese food culture explained to me. I have used some Chinese phrases such as Ni Hao, Xiexie and Zai Jian.’ Ashtyn Year 8 ‘I really enjoyed today’s trip. I loved all the food; especially the spicy noodles. I learnt how to say whether a meal was good and also ordered water in Chinese.’ Isabel Year 7 ‘It was very resourceful and useful to learn about Chinese culture and to speak Mandarin in the restaurant. I have learnt new sentences such as 我不喜欢吃猪肉 and 请问,这是什么肉.’ Farah Year 9 ‘This was the best experience I have had in ages, and it was free because of Swire’s funding! I have learnt how to say Dui Bu Qi which is means sorry, Xie Xie Miss Behrens and Swire.’ Georgia Year 9 We would like to thank Swire for funding this reward trip as this was a fantastic experience that would not have been possible without their support.

Visit to the Terracotta Warriors The Terracotta Warriors, 兵马俑, have come to Liverpool for the first time in 30 years and we were very fortunate to take 30 of our students to the Exhibition on Wednesday, 14th March 2018. The tickets for the students and the staff were generously funded by Edge Hill University’s Confucius Institute and we are very grateful to them for securing these for us. The students at Belvedere have previously learnt about the history concerning the first emperor of China 秦始皇 and the vast army that he created to protect him in the afterlife. Additionally, the exhibition that students visited also showcased objects from one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries and gave students an insight into almost 1,000 years of Chinese history. Comments from the students who attended: ‘Thank you Edge Hill and Swire for the wonderful experience. I loved it. I loved seeing the real Terracotta Warriors. How exciting!’ Frankie ‘I learnt about the history of the warriors and enjoyed seeing all of the statues and how they were made. Also it is amazing to know how special they are in Chinese history.’ Erin ‘I enjoyed the Terracotta Warriors exhibition the most because of how interesting and mysterious they were and they are.’ Raine ‘Thank you Edge Hill and Swire for the wonderful experience. I enjoyed learning the history of the Terracotta Warriors and I have taken lots of pictures to show my friends and family.’ Izzy ‘I enjoyed learning about all the different things that were buried amongst the soldiers.’ Ella ‘I enjoyed seeing the Terracotta Warriors the most because they are so old and tall, as well as they were under ground for over 2000 years.’ Jemima I would like to thank Edge Hill University for their tickets, Swire for their support and funding, as well as all the staff and students involved. 石老师 (Miss Behrens)

World Book Day This year’s World Book Day celebrations saw our students demonstrate their brilliant baking abilities with Belvedere’s first Bake a Book Competition! Students from all year groups were invited to create some sort of edible baked good that represented one of their favourite books and our students did not disappoint! We saw cake representations of many of our beloved literary classics, including Lewis

16

Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many more. Not only did the cake creations look fantastic and demonstrated the creativity of our students, but they were also incredibly tasty. Not only that, but many of the bakers also kindly donated their cakes to the Spring Wellbeing Fair the next day and helped us to raise lots of money for important charitable causes.

Spelling Bee Belvedere’s annual Spelling Bee saw our Year 7 and 8 students in another nailbiting competition. In Year 7, the crowds witnessed the marvellous efforts of their fellow students as they demonstrated their exceptional spelling skills. In the final round, it was Poppy Armstrong who came out victorious as Year 7 Spelling Champion after beating some tough competition! In Year 8, we also saw some tense rounds, but in the end Bella Axworthy demonstrated her incredible spelling skills and defeated the other superb spellers in her year group to claim her title of Year 8 Spelling Champion. This year we also witnessed some our staff go head to head with their spelling ability. It was Mr Woolley who managed to beat the other staff members and took the crown of Staff Spelling Champion. A massive congratulations to our spelling champions and a huge well done for all of the other students who demonstrated their spelling prowess in this year’s Spelling Bee.

The Eagles have landed… Year 8 students participating in the Wildlife Art Enrichment enjoyed a flying visit from Stephen Green and his Birds of Prey earlier this term. They had the opportunity to get up close to the birds and photograph them for their work. “It was very informative and good to be able to take pictures of the birds and then draw them in Enrichment. I learned a lot and had fun taking pictures of all the different birds.” Georgia “It provided us with an opportunity to do accurate paintings on our own photos.” Hope

“I loved learning about the birds of prey and it was a fantastic opportunity to take photographs of them to draw! It was really fascinating viewing (and stroking) these really special birds and owls.” Erin “I really enjoyed the day, as I was able to take lots of great pictures and learn lots about the birds!” Izzy Photographs taken during the visit inspired students to work in a range of Art materials to create these beautiful artworks. The artworks were entered into a competition to win a set of watercolours.

Something fishy is going on in the Art room Earlier this year, students took inspiration from the work of artist, Jason Scarpace to create their own beautiful, tropical fish paintings. Students were challenged to analyse the colours, patterns and brushstrokes of Scarpace, to create their own imaginary fish designs. Here are some of their paintings and sculptural outcomes.

“We have more in common than that which divides us. On Friday 22nd June, staff and students at the academy held a picnic in memory of Jo Cox, MP for Batley and Spen. At lunchtime the whole school, staff and students alike went out into Princes Park for a big picnic armed with blankets and of course, lots of delicious food.

There were various activities taking place including football, relay racing and sack races. These games brought people together and it was fantastic to see girls from all years playing together, sharing food and chatting. There was also a big cake sale organised by staff and students.

18

The event encouraged everyone in the Belvedere community to come together and it was a great way to raise money and to honour Jo’s legacy. We thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it is fair to say that everyone else did too. We would love for this to be a yearly event at Belvedere. Thank you to our teachers for organising it. Staying Safe Online

Go to internetmatters.org/controls for step-by-step guides

15 hours a week Children’s internet use has reached record highs, 5-15 year olds spend 15 hours a week online

If using a smartphone, check content lock is set

‘Social media is part of the fabric of children’s lives. Every moment, every experience is something to be captured online. Posts on social media aren’t just a catalogue of ‘real’ life, they are an integral part of it.’(NSPCC July 2018) Children’s use of the internet is becoming more mobile and interactive offering young people more opportunities to interact and meet new people, so it’s never been more important to make sure you are helping your daughter stay safe in the digital world. At the academy, we spend a lot of time educating the girls about staying safe online. At each Parents’ Evening, there are resources that you, as parents, can take away with you to help you remain vigilant when it comes to your daughter’s online ‘footprint.’ If you would like any further information regarding online safety, please speak to Mr. Jamieson who has overall responsibility for this at the academy.

Managing privacy settings on apps

WHATSAPP

SNAPCHAT

INSTAGRAM

YOUTUBE

Set parental controls on your home broadband

20

Make the games console safe and secure

Use safety mode on YouTube and Google

If using social networks, check privacy settings

Get familiar with regular conversations Check they know the rules Start a conversation when your children will be more receptive and engaged, such as on the way to or from school Ask them for advice on how to do something online and use this as a conversation starter Make sure they know they can come to you if they’re upset by something they’ve seen online Be sensitive and encourage them when they share their online experiences with you If your child talks about an issue with you, stay calm and listen without judging them

Don’t share personal information like their phone number or email address online Only talk to real life friends or family if they are on sites with a social media element Explain that people they meet online might not be who they say they are Tell them to be a good online friend and not to say nasty things even if it’s just a joke Use secure and legal sites to download music and games Make sure they check with you before downloading any programs to avoid viruses

Key issues you may want to discuss

CYBERBULLYING

11-15 year olds use on average 5 different websites and apps to communicate with friends at home, the most popular being Instagram (60%). If your child is using these networking sites and respective apps, get up to speed on how they can manage their privacy settingsby visting: internetmatters.org/back-to-school to download their “How to guides”.

Control app downloads and purchases

SEXTING

Prevention is always better than the cure when it comes to this issue. Help your child understand the consequences of what they share online and encourage them to be “kind online”. If they are the target of cyberbullying, be sure to keep all messages as evidence and block the bullies on social networks. For more advice about cyberbullying visit internetmatters.org/ issues/cyberbullying

There are many reasons why young people get involved in sexting; exploring sex and relationship or pressure from a partner or friends. Having an open and honest conversation about it can help them understand the implications of sending a nude image and highlight that it is illegal. If your child has sent a nude image and it has been put online; report it to CEOP and contact Childline who can help you get all known copies removed from the internet. internetmatters.org/issues/sexting

Year 7 trip to Conwy Castle As Year 7 gathered in the canteen on 19th June, the coach arrived to take us to Conwy Castle for our history trip. Everyone sat down on the coach for the long trip to Wales. After an hour and a half, the coach arrived, however we were a little bit early, so we were given our activity booklets. At Conwy, our tour guide led us on a tour of the castle, where we were able to see the well, the gateway, the chapel and much more. Furthermore, we learned lots of interesting facts , which meant that we could answer the questions in the activity booklets. The trip to Conwy Castle was a very fun and educational trip. We got to see the

whole castle and learn about its heritage. I really enjoyed the visit as it helped me understand more about medieval castles and how they functioned and were built. It was great fun learning about the different elements of the castle and what they were used for. I especially liked the ice cream at the end. Daisy C, Year 7 When the tour had finished, we had a chance to do some souvenir shopping because most of us had bought some spending money. We were all hungry so we went to a nearby playground to have lunch and had pictures taken by the teacher, of us all together. After lunch we had all bought an ice cream, we gathered on the coach to go home again. Overall, the trip was not just educational, but enjoyable too because we were able to see what castles were like in the Middle Ages. Polly N, Year 7

A Night at the Musicals: Review Our cast, orchestra and crew of over 100 wowed a sell out audience for three nights with an amazing production showcasing both the talent within the academy and the best of Musical Theatre from the West End and Broadway. The final week of Belvedere’s Spring Term 2018 closed in the most spectacular way. Since being recognised with an Educate Award for being the best in offering ‘Outstanding Arts in a Secondary School’ across the North West back in 2015 with ‘Oliver!’, Belvedere’s quality productions have become increasingly popular and the highlights of the academy calendar. As one event comes to a close, the next begins, and each time we feel we raise the quality whilst endeavouring to get as many of our talented pupils involved as possible.

22

With almost 100 students involved, this was definitely our biggest in-house production and, judging from the audience feedback, the most crowd pleasing so far! The Drama and Music departments’ staff were overwhelmed with comments applauding the success of the production pieces, and the talent of the pupils with many likening it to West End quality rather than a school production; Music and Drama love collaborating for this very reason as our pupils are so talented. As always, Belvedere prides itself on creating the full package when it comes to its production with our students at the heart of everything – the amazing music was produced by the 40+ piece Orchestra, the choral were sung by our 30+ strong Show Choir, the singing and dance was performed by Principal and Junior Ensembles, and the soloists were made up of students from Year 7 to Year 13. It must

also be noted that it was our student Tech Team who operated the 50 lanterns and 30 microphones involved in the production. The production was a celebration of Musical Theatre performing the greatest show stopping numbers from the West End and the boards of Broadway. The evening took the audience on a journey through Victorian England through the work of Sondheim and Bart with Sweeney Todd and Oliver!, across the water to the French Revolution with Les Miserables, followed by a rewind to the American Revolution with Lin Manuel Mirranda’s global award winning Hamilton. A short trip along the yellow brick road with The Wizard of Oz led us to Broadway where we performed songs from The Lion King, Billy Elliot, Chicago, Rent, Grease, Avenue Q and Ghost The Musical. As always, the performance was a three night sell-out, and honestly, our favourite so far!

Wirral Speech and Drama Festival The Drama department wanted to share some success of our Drama Company at the Wirral Speech and Drama Festival which was held at The Birkenhead High School Academy. There was very tough competition in lots of classes (sometimes made up by just ourselves) and extremely stoic adjudicators; they did very well!

Dance and Speech. (Patron: Her Majesty The Queen.)

We ‘cleaned up’ during the day and were placed 1st/2nd and 3rd in the Mime, Solo Prose, and Duologue classes in all age catagories we entered. All of our girls, in all entered classes, got a mark of 84+ which is considered a ‘Commended’ or ‘Distinction’ Grade by the Official Adjudicators of the British Federation for Festivals for Music,

A very special congratulations goes to Charlotte Flynn who gained first place, and the highest mark overall in all of the Monologue and Reading Prose Competitions (with some very interesting competition and extremely posh accents), and was awarded the very prestigious and large ‘Wirral Festival of Music, Speech and Drama Cup’.

Special congratulations should be given to Margaret Saunderson, Sadie Rietdyk, and Erin Murphy who won trophies for coming first in their class, as well as getting a Distinction grade of over 85.

GCSE and A Level Drama Performances This year the talents of our GCSE and A Level Drama and Theatre students were showcased to the External OCR Examiner. These performances were of a professional level and left audiences wowed as well as our examiner, hopefully! These performances make up 30% of the qualification mark.

A journey to find new perspectives on Art Year 10 Art students enjoyed a trip to our local gallery, Tate Liverpool, on 2nd July. Students were welcomed to the gallery by friendly staff, and were given an interesting and informative tour of the varied work in their current exhibitions on Floors 2 and 3. Afterwards, students explored the gallery’s collections more freely; examining

their favourite artworks in a little more detail. Following this, they were given photography and drawing workshops in the Royal Liverpool Albert Dock area, exploring the theme of perspective to enhance their coursework sketchbooks. It was a beautiful day for some observational drawing ‘en plein air’.

‘Watch out!’, ‘Wow! I can see the sea’, ‘look over there, there’s a massive seagull’... just some of the phrases shouted out by students who had become fully immersed in the world of virtual reality - one of the new features at the MMU show, and certainly one that was of great interest to the students and also Graphics staff. Both virtual reality and augmented reality are booming areas and ones that Mr Dykeaylen is keen to get the Graphics students to explore and become more involved in. 3D printed imagery also was more dominant this year and clearly shows how technology is being used in universities; one hopes that such tech can filter down in to the school arena also (unfortunately without the sort of funding that universities benefit from!) To help prepare for their Personal Investigation coursework in Year 13, Mr

28

Dykeaylen was pleased to be able to take his Y12 Graphics students to the Manchester Art School Degree Show (Manchester Metropolitan University). With such an array of exciting, vibrant and experimental work, he was confident that the students would be inspired and also gain an appreciation of the wide range of subject disciplines and qualifications they could apply for going forward from their A Level Graphics course. As mentioned, there was modern tech in abundance but the students also got a great deal of inspiration by looking through the graduates’ sketch books - as these are often the staring point of their bigger projects and gaining a clearer appreciation of how ideas can develop and be eveolved, but also how the design process works and how to document their own thought processes. The MMU show covered such a wide range of disciplines: Graphics, Fine Art, Film

and Media Studies, Textiles, Architecture, Multimedia, Photography, Three Dimensional Design, and Interior Design. It’s often good to look outside your core subject and get inspiration from other design areas. The students commented: ‘I enjoyed seeing the work produced by both the graduating students and current students at MMU. This trip opened my eyes to the industry of Graphic Design and has inspired me to look into specialising in Illustration at university. The sketchbook rooms make you realise how much thought process and planning is behind the final pieces, and it has inspired me to show more of my planning in my work.’ EP ‘I really enjoyed being able to see the work of students not much older than ourselves,

taking courses that we are aspiring to take ourselves. Being able to look around the degree show has filled me with excitement about my own university career starting in 2019, prompting me to place MMU as a possible option for my studies.’ RT ‘I really enjoyed looking at all of the students’ sketchbooks and their thoughts throughout the course. It was interesting to see how they came about their ideas from documenting their meals everyday for a year to drawing their favourite buildings. It gave me inspiration for both my Graphics Personal Investigation as well as my EPQ research.’ KC It was a very inspiring trip, and we hope this will filter in to our students’ work.

Y13 RAF Cadet represents the UK At the moment, I am a Flight Sergeant in the RAF Air Cadets. I’ve been a member for around 5 years now and the opportunities I have been given have been second to none. From meeting Kate Middleton, learning how to paraglide solo and receiving my Gold DofE award from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palcace; I thought nothing else could be done. However, on the 14th of April, I was chosen to be 1 of the 11 cadets to represent the UK at the RAF 100 celebrations in Washington DC. I was and still am overwhelmed but honoured to have been given this opportunity. On the first day we helped the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), who are the equivalent of the UK Air Cadets, at the Udvar Hazy Air Show. The best part of the day was when I was chosen to greet the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, who is the head of the RAF. I had to open his car door, salute and shake his hand. This was a big thing as not many air cadets get a chance to do this, hence the staff got me to practice so I didn’t mess up. In the end though the Chief of Air Staff decided to open the door himself; all the fuss for nothing!

Danielle Turner, Year 13

During the week, we stayed on Joint Base Andrews, which is where the president’s plane lives. This meant on the second day we got a chance to take a look at all the different stations on the base. We watched working dogs sniff out drugs and had a go on a Hueyi helicopter flight simulator. I think it is safe to say I won’t be a helicopter pilot anytime soon, as I crashed 3 times trying to land in the White House Garden. We had a look around a KC135 which is a huge plane used to refuel other aircraft, and we even watched President Trump take off in Air Force 1. In the evening we went to watch the RAF Band at DAR Constitution Hall. Once again, we met the Chief of Air Staff along with other RAF dignitaries. On the third day we visited the Air Force memorial and the Pentagon memorial before going to Arlington cemetery to visit the tomb of the unknown graves. After this we had a tour of Capitol Hill and a tour of the British Embassy. We finished off the sightseeing with a trip to the White House and then, we were straight off to the cocktail party at the Smithsonian museum. I got to meet and greet officers from the

top of the armed forces from all over the world, from Australia to Greece to Germany. We got to watch the Dambuster squadron reform which was a once life opportunity for all of us. The last two days included a tour of Lockheed Martin which is the company that makes the F-35 jets; these are the really, really fast ones. I had a go on the F-35 simulator and turns out I’m a natural at it; much better than I was at flying a helicopter anyway! We finished the week off at the Lincoln memorial where we watched the end of the RAF baton relay before it went back to the UK. The week was honestly amazing, and I am never going to forget it. If you haven’t already I would definitely encourage you to join the air cadets or another similar organisation. They provide once in a lifetime opportunities like this one, as well as help you grow into a well-rounded person.

Everyone arrived at Manchester Airport excited by the sights we were about to see. Walking boots were packed, coats and jumpers were at the ready and the land of ice awaited. After a short two-hour flight, we arrived in Iceland, greeted by glorious sunshine and fabulous views. First stop was the Blue Lagoon; the temperature was freezing so after a quick dash to the lagoon, we then bathed in the warm waters; it was lush! We also visited various features including Solheimajokull glacier, Iceland’s famous geyser, as well as mighty waterfalls cascading from various heights. We were treated to the delights of the Black Beach, where the waves crashed down before us, and basalt columns decorated the coastline. The girls also met a few very cute horses before we visited Pingvellir National Park, with its spectacular views. We arrived back to Manchester the following morning, very tired but all agreeing that Iceland really was the trip of a lifetime.

The Blue Lagoon After our first day of travelling and sightseeing, we got to experience the Blue Lagoon. We arrived around 7.30pm and had 3 hours of complete luxury and relaxation. To prepare for the lagoon we were shown the deluxe changing rooms; nothing like the swimming baths! The short sprint

32

from the changing rooms to the lagoon was a rather icy experience; however the gorgeous toasty water soon warmed us up. The lagoon was picturesque, the night sky was illuminated by the glowing spotlights around the lagoon. The Blue Lagoon was a fantastic experience and nothing like anything I had seen before. Everyone was treated to a facemask and a drink, and then we had a swim and then headed back to the changing rooms. It was definitely my favourite part of the trip. Maddie A, 9M

Solheimajokull Glacier We were lucky enough to visit one of the many glaciers in the country, Solheimajokull. The views we got the chance to witness were breathtaking and it was definitely the highlight of my holiday. We were told how the glacier formed and I thought it was incredible how you could clearly see how the snow had crystallised to become the glacier that is there today. Our tour guide told us the snow was extremely clean and fresh, and reiterated this by actually picking up a piece and eating it! Overall the experience is one I’ll never forget. Alanis M, 9M

Strokkur Geyser On the third day, we were lucky enough to visit the Strokkur Geyser as part of the famous Golden Circle tour. Geysers are vents in the earth’s surface that regularly erupt jets of water and steam.

The geysers are one of the most popular sites to visit when in Iceland and we could see why – the tension built whilst waiting for the explosion, and then when it came it surprised us all and covered the whole area in steam making it hard to see. It was one of our favourite places that we visited even if it didn’t smell particularly amazing – (rotten eggs)! Anisha S, 12S and Eve M, 12MC

Year 10 Geography Fieldwork Year 10 were delighted to discover that they were lucky enough to be out on fieldwork on the hottest 2 days of the year; 25th and 26th June. Suncream packed, Liverpool One was the first stop to complete land use maps and questionnaires about Liverpool’s heritage and culture. The girls even managed to squeeze in a little bit of shopping on their lunch break.

The second stop was Formby Beach for another scorcher – 27˚C. Year 10 investigated the beach profile (angle of the beach) as well the wind speed and longshore drift. They used new fieldwork techniques and equipment admirably despite the heat, and were a real credit to Belvedere. Luckily, the ice cream van at the end of the day provided them with their reward; Mr. Whippy all round!

Year 7 conquer Moel Famau On 19th June, 69 Year 7 pupils travelled to Mold in North Wales to take on the task of climbing Moel Famau. When we arrived the weather forecast didn’t look too positive but Year 7 showed resilience and determination by making it to the top, despite the rain.

The views on the way up and down were amazing and Year 7 particularly enjoyed seeing the farmer and his sheepdog at work herding the sheep on the hillside. A fantastic day was had by all!

Year 13 Leavers’ Assembly Friday 25th May was our opportunity to give our Year 13 students a fantastic send off in the form of their leavers’ assembly. It was also heart-warming to see the girls thanking their form tutors for the support they’ve received during their sixth form journey. The assembly included a trip down memory lane, some singing, poetry, eating and drinking, tears (in some cases),

and was a lovely celebration of the girls’ sixth form experience. We hope our Year 13 girls enjoyed their assembly and that it contributes to them having fond, amazing memories of Belvedere. We wish them every success for their futures and hope that they had the best summer ever - they certainly deserved it after all their exams! Miss Palin and the Sixth Form Team Our gift from Megan Bankier, who designed this image herself using her IPad

Tour of new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Following an inspiring assembly to Y10, 11, and 12, Laing O’Rourke invited a group of students for a tour of their city centre site; the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The sun was shining as we donned hard hats and high visibility jackets, whilst the steel toe capped boots proved a little trickier to get on! Once we were fully protected, project manager Charlotte and engineer Helen gave us a tour of the site, explaining the many different jobs and skills along the way.

This was a rare opportunity to get on site and hear more about their roles and all

34

of the jobs involved in the construction industry, it was a real eye opener. The visit certainly gave our pupils a range of options to consider, especially when students heard about the vast range of skills necessary to make a huge project like this run to plan. Laing O’Rourke are committed to supporting women in the construction industry, and Helen and Charlotte were amazing role models for our students. They have already invited us back to see the site at the next stage and we look forward to working with them again in the future.

Graphics trip to Blackpool I really enjoyed it and think we all developed skills in drawing for purpose and working quickly. JO I found the trip really interesting because it allowed me to experiment with different kinds of media, and gave me an insight in to the design process that is required to build a brand. It allowed me to see that it is possible to create something from nothing in a short space of time if your creativity is used. CA The Blackpool trip helped me to gain skills and produce designs of a logo in a way that I wouldn’t have experimented with before attending the workshop. Being in a university environment gave me an insight into graphic design uni life and made me feel more inspired and determined to apply for an Illustration course at university. EP Personally, I think that the Blackpool trip to The Fylde College was very beneficial as the information I gained about graphic design gave me a wider understanding of the subject and the other aspects of graphics there are, such as learning how to use a press. As a group we created our own logos, mine was “rocking skateboard, then everyone sketched out ideas of what it could look like, producing a mind map of different themes behind the two words. Then we transferred the final piece onto a foil card with a scalpel by tracing over our original drawings, possibly taking off the top layer of the foil, which I did, this was so

that the oil based black ink could fill in the gap to add colour and to fill dents put in the card. Then the excess ink was cleaned off of the card making sure it was clear, then it was placed face down onto a damp piece of paper which sat on a press. Placing the soft carpet like materials over the top of the card, the press was then rolled in the opposite direction so that the ink placed on the foil transferred onto the paper. These final pieces were then put onto Photoshop where we coloured, outlined and produced our logo name in a font that fitted the image, which was so much fun to devise. I`d recommend this to another graphics student as it expands your knowledge of graphics. I had never used a press before then, yet I found it to be extremely helpful in producing abstract work. The day was really exciting but we still obtained new information and developed our understanding of what our GCSE and possible A-level offers. HH

Mr Dykeaylen took his Year 10 and Year 12 Graphics students to Blackpool to experience what a workshop at degree level would entail. The Graphics and Illustration Subject Leaders took the students through a series of fast and fun activities - and our students responded with some great design outcomes!

It was a very interesting trip. It allowed me to experiment with new techniques and to develop my creative making skills. GN A great opportunity that I felt benefited my A Level course. It gave me a better understanding of the development behind design as well as gave me a chance to try out new printing techniques. KC The trip was really good. It allowed us to practise with different methods of creating pieces of work. GT

Chamber Choir Tour to Venice and Padua

Singing at The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, The Basilica of St Anthony of Padua and St Mark’s Basilica The Chamber Choir tour to Venice this year was a huge success, supported by nearly 30 family members and friends from the UK. The choir gave compelling performances in all three concerts during their four day tour, each one in awe inspiring and beautiful venues. However, the highlight of the tour was performing a cappella during Mass in the Basilica di San Marco; an incredible honour and privilege. 54 girls and 5 staff met early in the morning (3am!!) of July 16th to board a coach bound for Manchester Airport. Following a relaxing flight, we were soon in the beautiful city of Venice, where we had the first of many fine authentic Italian dishes, before checking into a lovely hotel. When I looked back and considered the sheer success of the tours to Barcelona and Prague, I knew that this Venice tour had a lot to live up to. It did not disappoint! As you already know, Venice needs no introduction. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. Millions of visitors lose their heart to it every year, mesmerised by its network of canals and skyline of domes and spires. I

36

can safely say that we all fell under its spell immediately.

looked around at the beauty of the interior, covered in artwork.

On the first day, as the pupils took the vaporetto or walked the Venetian streets, they were left in awe, as round each corner was yet another canal or bridge or beautiful building. The choristers were astonished by the immense size and beauty of the venue for their first performance; The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore.

The Church of Gold was a sight to behold. This was a truly inspiring church and it was reflected in the quality of the singing and music produced by all the choristers. This service was led by the newly crowned Head and Deputy Choristers; Lily Sucliffe and Alessia Lotto (both of Year 10). To say it was an emotional performance would be an understatement. Singing Mass at St Mark’s Basilica is an experience that no choir ever forgets. Personally for me, it symbolised the journey that the choir have been on over the last five years, and a testament to all of the hard work put in by the pupils. To start from very humble beginnings in S27 (Music Room) on a cold, rainy September afternoon in 2013 with the first rehearsal and just 19 choristers, to then arrive at such quality in just five years of singing, in arguably one of the most beautiful churches in Europe, fills me with the utmost pride. It is easy to forget sometimes that this is a school choir!

It was wondrous to hear their first note echo around the cavernous building for longer than seemed possible. The acoustic was just incredible and an appreciative audience were transported by the choir’s heavenly voices. The choristers performed exquisitely at all of their prestigious concert venues and were met with rapturous applause and even some tears from the audiences. The following day saw the choir perform mass at the Basilica of St Anthony of Padua to a full congregation. Our final performance was in the iconic St Mark’s Basilica. The sound of gasps and wonder filled the air, as the choir entered for the first time and

The impact on our group has been immeasurable. To step onto such a prestigious international stage and hold our own as a

belvedere performance group is a bonding memory that will last a lifetime for each member. It wasn’t all work and no play however! The girls enjoyed and deserved a lot of relaxation time in Venice, whether it was swimming in the beautiful hotel pool, shopping, or just enjoying time together. The pupils found lots of time to explore Venice’s famous sights, including Rialto Bridge, which spans the Grand Canal. Many even enjoyed a gondola ride! The staff certainly did! After the performance at St Mark’s Basilica, the girls also had fun in what is said to be one of the best waterparks in the whole of Italy; “Aqualandia - A Caribbean Adventure”. The wave machines and the slides were awesome! I think I still have the bruises to prove it! If our last day couldn’t get even better, the girls let their hair down and boogied the night away at our own private disco in the hotel.

Rome or Florence. Anybody is welcome to audition for the Chamber Choir. We have many more adventures ahead of us and are always on the lookout for new choristers. A huge thank you must go out to the eversupportive parents and families of the choristers and the four other members of staff who helped make this tour so successful. Thank you to Mr Deakin, Ms Speed, Mr Hill and Miss Scott.

“Venice was the third Chamber Choir tour they have been on, but in my opinion it was the best! It was such an amazing experience to sing in some of the most amazing venues in the world

with my friends, and it was such an honour to get the opportunity of being Head Chorister to an amazing choir. So far, this has been the highlight of my time at Belvedere and I will never forget it.” LS “The Chamber Choir trip to Venice was the best possible way to end my time at Belvedere. The highlight of the trip for me was performing in St Mark’s Basilica as it is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I am so grateful to Mr O’Keeffe and Mr Deakin for providing me with an amazing opportunity to discover a new culture and perform in such stunning venues.” ET

There’s no doubt that the busy concert schedule, with the promise of touring and exotic sightseeing has been key to our recruitment and retention over the last four years. For our next international tour in 2020 we will be flying back to Italy to sample the delights of

Serving up a great Wimbledon trip On the 4th of July, 40 Belvedere Girls had the pleasure of attending the Wimbledon 2018 Championships. We spent the full day soaking up the atmosphere of the games, watching outstanding tennis, doing people watching on Murray Mound, celeb spotting, eating strawberries and cream, buying lots of merchandise in the shops and much more. We watched some very exciting and competitive games; they included Katie Swan V Mihaela Buzarnescu, Paolo Lorenzi V Gael Monfils, Thomas Fabbiano V Stan (the man) Wawrinka. Some pupils were extremely lucky and met some famous tennis players and got autographs and selfies with them. We were very fortunate to get access to Centre Court for photographs at the end of the day. It was amazing to see the professionalism and tennis etiquette from the players, umpires, and ball boys and girls. On Day 2 we travelled to Windsor to have some time for lunch, shop for souvenirs, see Windsor Castle and the changing of the guards. All staff and pupils really enjoyed the trip and were excited to watch the rest of the Championships on TV. Some pupils are dreaming of playing there some day soon! Bring on next year! Miss Scott “I enjoyed the Wimbledon Trip this year because it was an opportunity to watch world class tennis players perform to the best of their abilities. I would say that the best part of the trip was being able to watch the players compete and to enjoy

38

the traditional strawberries and cream. My experience of tennis before Wimbledon was very limited seeing as I had only played tennis in PE lessons and watched Wimbledon on television in previous years. During the trip I watched two tennis matches which were played by Thomas Fabbiano vs Stan Wawrinka and Paolo Lorenzi vs Gael Monfils. On the second day of the Wimbledon Trip we travelled to Windsor. During this time we had the option to watch the changing of the guards or to go shopping. My friends and I chose to watch some of the ceremony and also go shopping for souvenirs. If I had the opportunity to go on this trip again I would definitely consider it and certainly recommend it to my friends who didn’t go on the trip this year.” Isabelle, Year 8 “Having the opportunity to go to the Wimbledon Championships this year with school and even go onto centre court at the end of the day was an amazing experience. We were able to see many professional tennis matches including watching the Grand Slam Champion Stan Wawrinka on Court 3. As well as watching the tennis matches we also went to the practice courts and were lucky enough to get autographs from many professional tennis players including Kyle Edmund and we even got an autograph and picture with Novak Djokovic, the 12-time Grand Slam champion. I hope that the younger girls have the same opportunity as we did in the coming years. “ Anisha & Emily, Year 12
