Texas a 19. század elején egy német-amerikai író szemével1 Berczeli-Nemcsényi Alex The United States reached its continental borders in the first half of the 19 th century. During the expansion it acquired new territories through purchase, treaty or war. In the population of these areas the immigrants from Europe played a significant role. Thousands of immigrants came from the politically and economically divided Germany. Their numbers increased spectacularly from the 1830s. Most of them began their new life in the industrially more developed and more populous cities of the East Coast. But many of them settled in the southern regions of North America, for example in Texas. In promoting this area, the writings of those who had already travelled there played an important role. They tried to report their experiences as positively as possible, because they wanted to justify their decision and to encourage as many people as possible to follow their example. A good example for this is Charles Sealsfield’s novel The Cabin Book. This book is not just a historical novel, but a detailed account of contemporary Texas. In addition to the reasons for immigration, in my paper I will examine the historical context of The Cabin Book and the life of Charles Sealsfield. Keywords: Texas, German-Immigration, German-Americans, United States
