2023 SEASON
Welcome
This season is a celebration.
With all the hoo-ha of pandemics and the planet dying and the decline of democracy and the general air of imminent apocalypse, we thought it would be good to offer you a season which cuts an optimistic path through the demented wonderland of the twenty-first century.
Belvoir is your yellow brick road* through 2023. Heart, courage and brains, in theatrical technicolour.
These shows run the gamut of what theatre can offer, from Thomas Weatherall’s exquisite hour-long monologue to the wild three-act fantasia of The Master and Margarita, with its live music and big ensemble cast.
There’s a Palawa tragedy, a Sydney drama, a ChineseAustralian comedy, and a Broadway musical. There’s a concert-show, and a cabaretplay. There’s even a lesbian divorce comedy.
We’re continuing our headlong love of Australian stories - seven of them, most made specially for Belvoir. And as always there are classics, but this year one is a musical and one is an adaptation of a novel. We went looking for joy and we found it in new places. Which is what Belvoir is for.
There’s a lot of music in the 2023 season, including our first ever Stephen Sondheim musical, the delicious Into the Woods. Why is there a lot of music? Perhaps because we’ve all had enough reality in life lately to double down on realism in the theatre. If only life could burst into song like theatre can.
Where the season begins with a monologue it ends with an extravaganza. We dreamt up this adaptation of The Master and Margarita during the darkest days of the lockdown.
It is a celebration of theatre and theatricality, of why we need it in our cities, our lives. Its symphony of stories within stories, exuberant joy, and insistence that love and imagination are the greatest gifts we possess make it the perfect culmination of our dance through 2023.
So we’re asking you all to join us for the whole year by getting yourself and everyone you know season tickets. That’s Belvoir –the whole undertaking is what counts. We keep going, show after show, year after year, through thick and thin, chasing the dream.
Join us.
When Mark moved out of home for the first time his mum started writing him letters - just checking in, staying in touch, keeping a gentle hold on her son. Until one letter brings news no-one wants to hear.
Today, alone in his apartment, on a quiet ordinary morning, Mark needs to try to make some sense of the path of his young life. He needs to work out how to go on with the day, his studies, the fragility of living. He needs us to hear his story, and the story of his family.
A tender, exquisite monologue written and performed by a rising star, Thomas Weatherall, Blue takes us deep into the beauty, and sadness, of a young life at its new beginning.
Blue is a remarkable, genuinely exciting debut. Thomas is a young man wise beyond his years. His writing is sensitive, deeply felt, beguiling. So is his acting. His play unpacks big stuff - mental health, family, loss, how we remember. See it.

Union
Ruth and Judith have been together for a long time.
Long enough to have seen Australia change, for better and for worse. They have two bright and inquiring kids and a manageable mortgage in the Inner West. With love and hard work, they made the political personal and built a family of which they’re fiercely proud. They re-wrote the rules, and their life together is a progressive success story. Why should breaking up be any different?
But even the loftiest ideals can come undone when pesky human emotion gets involved.
A fine new play from the wicked mind of Maeve Marsden, Blessed Union is for anyone who’s looked at their life and wondered if there might be a better way to live it.
Plays about family are as old as theatre, but this is a play about a new kind of family, and it’s brilliant. It came out of our Writers’ Lab and lockdown developments (thank you to everyone who donated to Artists at Work) so we’re elated it’s hitting the stage. And with Danielle Cormack and Maude Davey as Ruth and Judith, it’ll be a treat.
- EamonIn the thirty-five years since its premiere, Into the Woods has become a classic – brilliantly original, dark, funny, absorbing and utterly entertaining.
It begins, of course, with “Once upon a time…” By the end of the opening number not one but six fairytale plots have intertwined, as Cinderella, the Baker and his Wife, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack of beanstalk fame all head into the woods in search of love, happiness, wisdom. Three midnights of brilliant plot twists later they all end up singing
“Happy ever after”. Except this is only the interval…
We all want our wishes fulfilled, but are we prepared to pay the price?
Why now? Because this is the truest and happiest thing I can think of to offer audiences in 2023. I’ve directed Angels in America and The Glass Menagerie at Belvoir and I like to think of Into the Woods as the third in a loose trilogy of masterpieces by the three great gay dramatists of American theatre. It’s about story and storytelling, about how we live for each other. It’s both light and dark, the plotting is as joyful as Shakespeare’s, and the music is sublime. Best of all, seeing this at Belvoir means being in the same room as performers like Esther Hannaford and Tamsin Carroll. Don’t miss it.

At What
Tasmania, now.
Boyd has been walking a tightrope for years – balancing responsibilities to Land and People with the simple business of making a living.
But there’s something happening, he can sniff it in the wind. Every year more and more folk are showing up claiming to be Palawa too. Noone’s heard of them until now… Where has this missing mob been all these years? Are they legit? Or are they ‘tick-a-box’? Who decides? And how?
If Boyd’s going to take everyone forward together, they’re going to have to go back, old mob or new, into the island’s knotty past. And they might not like what they find there.
We’re proud of At What Cost? and pleased to bring it back with the original cast before it goes on a national tour – if you missed out here’s your second chance. Nathan Maynard’s story of Country and competing histories opened some eyes and set off a few arguments. We loved its oomph, and how it asked us all to think about a very contemporary Australian issue.

the Climate Era
We read this and simply had to do it, we haven’t had a script that’s generated quite as much energy as this one. David is a climate expert as well as a playwright, and the sheer dramatic impact of his expertise is thrilling, frightening, invigorating. It’s not a play that wags its finger, it’s terrifically smart and human. If you’re looking for something about the big issues of this era, here’s a piece of theatre for you. – Eamon

A sophisticated new adaptation of Charlotte Wood’s bestselling novel of friendship and the wisdom of age.

Weekend
Based on the novel by Charlotte Wood
Adapted by Sue Smith Directed by Sarah Goodes Cast of four including Belinda Giblin Toni Scanlan Melita Jurisic Composer and Sound Designer Steve Francis Supported by The Group“People went on about death bringing friends together, but it wasn’t true…”
Four women have known each other for decades, and have a friendship that goes with itgood-humoured, caring, and forthright when required. But Sylvie has died, and when the remaining three come together to pack up her beach house, they find maybe they haven’t been as honest – or as good friends - as they thought.
Adele, a once-well-known actress, Wendy, a high-profile academic, and Jude, who ran one of the city’s most celebrated restaurants, learn things they should have learned years ago. There’s a difference between growing old, and growing wise.
And at the heart of it all, an old dog keeps them company, silently bearing witness to the folly of age, and the warmth of true friendship.
Charlotte Wood’s novel really struck a chord with many readers, so when a playwright as fine as Sue Smith approached us about turning it into a play for Belvoir we jumped. This is a special play - moving, honest, thoughtful, and a gift for three of our finest actors. This is heartland stuff.
- EamonLady Day
By Lanie Robertson
It’s 1959, in a bar in South Philadelphia. It’s a bit rundown. You wouldn’t know it, but we’re in a moment of history – one of Billie Holiday’s legendary last performances.
As she sings her set (and it’s the greats – ‘Taint Nobody’s Business If I Do, Strange Fruit, What a Little Moonlight Can Do, Easy Livin’, God Bless the Child, and more) she shares the story of her life - a bit risqué, humorous, political, ecstatic, tragic. Lady Day comes to the fore as she looks back on a life, on an era.
It’s just fantastic we can get Zahra Newman back on our stage – and not just for her charisma and her acting prowess, we get to hear her sing, too. And that’s seriously worth twice the ticket price. These songs blow your mind and move you to tears. It’s Zahra and her band, and it’s great theatre, perfect for a space like Belvoir.

An Australian Songbook
Devised and performed by Robyn Archer
Accordion/Vocals George Butrumlis Guitars/Vocals Cameron Goodall Keyboards/Vocals Enio PozzebonOriginally commissioned by Queensland Theatre
Robyn Archer — icon, legend of the Australian stage, and provocateur — has thrilled audiences with her rich renditions of the great songbooks of Europe and America.
Now, Robyn turns her distinctive and fearless talents to songs that describe the difficult, wonderful place that is Australia. From the music of her upbringing to increasingly complex rhythms and cadences of the present, we are taken on a journey into our beauty and our terror, through song.
After this show, you’ll hear our country through very different ears.
A trio of Australia’s finest stage musicians join Robyn as the Belvoir stage becomes a cabaret: piano accordion virtuoso George Butrumlis, actor and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Goodall on guitar, and the very deft Enio Pozzebon on keyboards.
Robyn’s one of our treasured originals – she’s been part of Belvoir since the first push –so isn’t it great to have her back on our stage after too long away? If you’ve seen her cabaret work, you’ll know just how humorous and ratbaggy it can be, without losing the rigour and excellence songs like these need. It’s a homecoming – in more ways than one.

The Master
Magic, mayhem, and a book that can’t be burnt – a classic of literature lets fly at Belvoir.
An actor enters with a battered copy of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, and begins to read aloud from the opening chapter...
We’re in a city run by fools and mediocrities. Elites protect their power, thinkers squabble over trivia, everyone is consumed by greed and materialism. And sitting on a park bench in this city is the Devil himself. Why is he here?
The story that follows is wild, joyful and magnificent. The tale unfurls from ancient Galilee to Stalin’s Moscow, via a giant talking cat, a mad novelist, a ruthless officer of the secret police… At its centre is Margarita, who has to become a witch in order to save a lost manuscript - and us all.
Written in secret in the gloom of repression, passed around under the nose of the state police, The Master and Margarita became a legend long before it was published. Now it is a phenomenon of world literature, celebrated for its insistence that love and imagination* will always triumph over those who want to shut us down.
In the darkest days of the first lockdown we gathered a group of actors and read aloud from this book. Magic happened. Bulgakov was first and foremost a playwright. Banned from the theatre, he let his theatrical imagination run riot in a secret novel. We’re turning it back into theatre, and we can’t wait to show it to you.

People and stories are our lifeblood. Behind the scenes hundreds of people, most of them freelancers, work across dozens of programs, at Belvoir Street Theatre and out in our city and beyond, to keep the whole undertaking going. Our company, like our society, is all ongoing work. We’re part of a massive cultural and artistic effort across our city and our country to keep opening up space for the many people and communities we all live with. From Counting and Cracking to Barbara and the Camp Dogs and FANGIRLS and on into the future, the ideal we pursue is to make brilliant theatre which tells stories by, with, and for the many communities that make up our society. It’s work that can never be finished. Onwards!
It took me a minute to realise what a rare and supportive opportunity it was to be a writer in residence at Belvoir. Writing feels isolating at times so for me having the space at Belvoir to write, yarn with staff, artists and my dramaturgs, readings of my work that felt safe and just the buzz of creative energy around me was invaluable. No matter what happened in my week I would never give up going into Belvoir, I always leave feeling motivated and full.
Jorjia Gillis Writer under commission & 2021 Balnaves FellowI’m very passionate about Belvoir offering a range of low cost ticket options including $25 tickets for artists, student rush tickets and most importantly, free tickets for Unwaged performances. We get lots of feedback from people who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to see live theatre, and we often get lines forming around the block for Unwaged shows! Season tickets support the notion that our theatre is for everyone.
Aaron Beach Executive DirectorBelvoir has provided experiences that my students learn so much from and will hold for the rest of their lives. You have inspired and motivated my students in the power of the arts. Thank you.
Raymond Manu Teacher, Canley Vale High SchoolWe have always been strong believers that the Arts have the mercurial power to enthral, educate and engage communities and often all at the same time. Since first walking into the Belvoir theatre over 30 years ago we were immediately drawn to how seriously Belvoir took the responsibility of that power. It is that continued commitment to the Arts, artists and to all of us, delivered with collective passion and humanity, that drives our support and continues to draw us in to the Belvoir vision.

We are fortunate to experience every day the power that theatre has on young people’s lives, not just inspiring them to participate more fully in cultural life but also to think of the possibilities of careers in the arts, using the arts to heal and grow and learning transferable life skills through our workshops.
ACCESS
Belvoir Education Access programs work to remove obstacles to young people experiencing and enjoying theatre. Our No Barriers Access Programs are not just about bringing students to Belvoir to see our plays, but bringing Belvoir to students, wherever in the state they live. We offer free and subsidised tickets, school visits, workshops for students and teachers, work experience opportunities and enrichment programs.
Support Education
Belvoir’s Education Program is fully supported by philanthropic giving - you can make a tax-deductible donation at belvoir.com.au or contact our Development Team to discuss ways to help young people break down barriers, build confidence and unleash creativity with Belvoir. belvoir.com.au/education
WORKSHOPS
We run workshops throughout NSW with over 2000 young people participating each year. Our workshops, led by Belvoir artists, give young people insight into theatre making, whether it is a new area of interest or to develop their skills further. Workshops provide practical opportunities to gain industry knowledge for budding theatre-makers through School Holiday or Evening Workshops at Belvoir, or with their peers through our School Workshop Program
YOUNG BELVOIR THEATRE CLUB
Young Belvoir Theatre Club offers young people the opportunity to connect and extend their relationship with our company. Our annual theatre club is for enthusiastic audience members and emerging artists aged 15 to 18. Members attend Belvoir productions with other young theatre lovers, gain an insight into how productions come together, meet actors and artists, get discounted tickets for friends and family and more!
Apply for 2023 in November 2022.

WORK
DONATE TODAY
Whether it’s a monologue or an extravaganza, we’re only able to create and share it because of the generosity of people like you.
If your passion is supporting early career artists and First Nations storytellers, funding the development of new Australian works, or giving school students, community groups and people on limited incomes the chance to dance along with us, a gift to Belvoir will help make it happen.
LEAVE IT TO BELVOIR
You can make a dramatic difference by remembering Belvoir in your will.
Help secure the company’s long-term future, so that new generations can experience the joy of Belvoir St Theatre.
Whatever the size of your gift, a bequest is a wonderful way of sharing your love of Belvoir today with the artists and audiences of tomorrow.
