How about checking your production process online? No problem with ERIKS Smart Asset Management!
Employing 6 people for checking 3,000 pieces of rotating equipment continually to prevent your plant from shutting down? Sure, it’s an option. But there is a better option: By means of digitalisation we provide you with control over your plant. Using sensors and data analysis, your systems and installations can be maintained in a smarter and cheaper - way. This is where ERIKS is way ahead of the game. With online condition monitoring, all relevant data, both from your machines and applications and environmental data, can be displayed in real time. Any change in the condition of your machines is detected, and based on all this collected data you will be notified to take action. Then, after processing all the data by means of data analysis and applying algorithms deducted from decades of experience, we take a predictive approach. This means that we proactively inform you about the condition of your systems and give you advice on how to ensure continuity. This way we prevent unexpected stoppages and give you more control over the production process and the maintenance cycle.
Need more info? Contact us!
At ERIKS we have a new service for this purpose: Smart Asset Management. This service is delivered by employees who manage the sensors, hardware and systems as well as data experts and a specialised service team that provides on-site assistance for all kinds of measurements: vibration measurements, power measurements, compressed air detection, thermographic measurements, etc. All this data is collected in the eCloud, allowing you to log in at any time to consult all your measurements 24/7 and consult with specialists when needed. ERIKS will continue to direct its focus on optimizing our processes even further to improve your productivity and reliability.

ccording to the Business Data Platform Statista, the forecast for 2027 reveals a stark upward mobility of active internet of things (IoT) connections in the following industries: automotive with 223 million,
smart buildings with 141 million, tracking with 105 million, and smart cities with 58 million. Compared to 2017, these are extreme contrasts, as all industry sectors did not have more than approximately 40 million active IoT connections. With more time the more likely the active connections of IoT will expand throughout Europe’s many industry sectors.
The industrial landscape is currently right in the middle of the fourth industrial revolution with new technologies such as IIoT, big data, predictive analytics, machine learning and more being implemented at an ever-increasing pace. The combination of IIoT and predictive analytics offers unseen possibilities for maintenance and asset reliability with more diverse and affordable solutions to monitor the condition of equipment and the market while making asset condition data accessible through “the cloud.”
The Asset Performance 4.0 Hybrid Conference & Exhibition offers a unique opportunity to learn how new 4.0 technologies and fundamentals in operations, maintenance and asset management reinforce each other in order to achieve higher equipment reliability and cost performance in asset intensive industries.
AND THEN THERE’S THE LOCATION: ANTWERP Belgium’s second largest city offers you everything on your citytrip checklist, and even more: an intriguing medieval heart, startling architecture and a

In addition to the usual corona measures, such as providing disinfectant hand gel, clear signalling and regular cleaning and disinfection, the venue is also equipped with an extremely high-performance HVAC system that completely replaces the air in the complex 3 times per hour. Did you know that Pfizer, who developed a Covid-19 vaccine together with BioNTech, has its vaccine production unit in the city of Puurs, which is close to Antwerp and Brussels? Belgium is one of the European leading countries in vaccinating its citizens.

M O N ITO R IN G & PR E D ICTIO N DA S H B OA R D Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest oil company. In recent years, Saudi Aramco’s plant has been facing challenges, including equipment tripping and unplanned outages. The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) was low and the maintenance policy they had in place was mainly reactive. Due to the combination of a very high volume of equipment and a limited number of available technicians, they faced a lot of time pressure. Fortunately, over the years Saudi Aramco collected a lot of data, but less fortunately, it was unstructured data. Saudi Aramco decided internally to develop a data-driven Plant Reliability Condition Monitoring & Prediction Dashboard based on the data they had available.

The systems that Sitech Services create serve to optimize plant and machinery for maximum output, with the highest possible reliability and lowest possible maintenance costs. Sitech Services’ highly innovative digital solution enables businesses to apply condition-based monitoring strategies. The inhouse system provides a service dashboard that allows maintenance teams to get all the information they need about the condition of plant and machinery. Initial challenges, such as bad connectivity of IIoT sensors, were swiftly overcome and the Sitech Services team now provide clients with a first-class service that helps them to reduce asset downtime and minimize maintenance costs.
REMOTIVE - REFORM OF REMOTIVE BY DEVELOPING AN APP Remotive decided to ditch their pen and paper method for document inspection and reparation reports. Instead, they decided to embrace digital technology. Remotive decided to develop their own application for this process to improve efficiency and save time. They partnered up with Appwise to help design the app and make it communicate with their ERP/CRM package. As a result, Remotive technicians can now concentrate on their core activities of inspecting and repairing equipment, without wasting time filling out an old-fashioned pen and paper report after every job.

I-Care: Maintenance in the Boardroom Industrial digitalisation will have the same effect on maintenance as computerisation had on processes in the 1990s and 2000s. The effect of IOT on maintenance will be comparable to that of a robot in production. Predictive maintenance will be one of the major axes of industrial digitalisation: we live in a society where risk is no longer acceptable and predictive maintenance allows better control of human, environmental, quality, and financial risks. As these 4 axes are the major preoccupations of the Boards of Directors, predictive maintenance will bring maintenance “in the boardroom”. SKF In maintenance organizations we often talk about Sustainability, but these discussions never seem to refer to sustainability in business, society or the environment. At SKF we think this needs to change. Governments are tightening legislation and society becomes more critical about big corporates and SMA’s. For many this is a world full of threats, to SKF this is a world of opportunity. For almost two decades SKF has worked to reduce its carbon foodprint. We like to share with you how a good maintenance plan can actually help you move from a linear economy to a circular economy and also save up to 90% CO2 emission. n today’s high-tech world of manufacturing, the way in which machines and devices integrate and communicate with each other is increasingly complex.
For this reason, it’s more important than ever to get to a stage where communication protocols and data handling between industrial machines and devices are standardised. The major challenge is to bring open standards into application. To find out how umati is approaching this challenge, we interviewed the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Asso-

There are two main reasons for that. First, there are a multitude of equipment tech companies that create and use different and devices speak different languages. Second, in B2B relationships, data exchange has a very strong impact towards intellectual property. Or to put it the other way round: giving away data freely could foster industrial espionage, disbalancing the global market. viders to embed these security features within their products, or we can take care of it ourselves for the time being. For instance, by relying on appropriate VPN networks to cover the open ends. umati is designed to address these kind of issues. umati also creates a feedback channel between machine makers and users. Rather than going to each machine maker or technology group individually and asking questions, the user can contact umati and say “Look, my machine tool isn’t communicating with my robot - can you help me with your expertise?”. By creating a community of experts and helping to standardise machine communication, umati is making life much easier for the end users, especially the large number of SMEs amongst them. umati can be considered as similar to open source communities. Open source software means that there are unlikely to be backdoors which cause data leaks, as people can spot them and close them easily enough. If you buy commercial software, it’s like a black box - you don’t know what’s in there and whether there are any back doors.

In many ways, industrial companies treat data with more respect than personal tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. In the personal tech sphere, if you get a free service, you pay for it with your data. In other words, if you’re not a customer, you’re the product - and they’ll sell your data on. If you don’t trust Google or Microsoft with your data, you can always use a piece of software as a barrier to protect your sensitive data. This isn’t the case in the industrial sector, as the big players such as Siemens or Mitsubishi do not have the power or scale to create a closed ecosystem like MS, Apple or Google. In the machine industry, plant and machinery must work from day one, unlike personal software companies which can decide on a core functionality, ship a minimum viable product, then expand and develop it over time. This approach would work in manufacturing - you can’t ship a robot with minimal functionality, then say - in 2 weeks we’ll ship the gripper, then in 4 weeks, but only if a majority of users want it, we’ll ship the safety fencing! Businesses need to be careful to protect data and put mechanisms in place to encrypt the data. It is difficult to see whether people have tampered with data at the moment. Technologies such as the blockchain may change this in the future, but right now, trust is the key factor. As umati is independent of individual suppliers, we can help to build trust across the community and give companies peace of mind when it comes to data security.
Communicating Between Machinery And Devices OPC UA defines what type of information devices, tools and machines can transmit between each other. For instance, a robot may need to know the gripper status and position. A machine tool may need to know how many parts have been machined. A plastic machine may need to know the current temperature of the mould input and the closing pressure of the die. This is all standardised and defined in the respective

Therefore, algorithms should incorporate engineering expertise.
For example, you
can correlate a certain frequency with an imbalance in the machine. An IT specialist can write an algorithm to catch that logic, with input from an engineer. If that is the only anomaly, you know you need to balance the machine. For cases with multiple errors, such as electrical breakdown, imbalance and

parallel production lines and all three end up at one machine, then clearly that machine is critical, and you must monitor it. You can then carry out maintenance when it is convenient. If you realise that certain activities recur every month, you can immediately include that machine. Do you really need to apply condition-based monitoring in that case? You need to find a balance.” The same applies to components. “Do you have

mindset towards condition monitoring has certainly changed, because factories also have fewer specialist staff on the floor to carry out preventive maintenance. COVID has also played a role and we are seeing growing market demand for predictive maintenance.”

batch may be destroyed. Someone will have to decide whether to stop the production or continue. Suppliers of hardware and software prefer to sell as many sensors, networks, edge computers and software licences as possible. Cannaerts shared his view on this, “Our specialist Hanno Spoelstra already provided input for a study by PWC and Mainnovation in the Benelux in 2017, for example. The majority of data retrieval for predictive maintenance turned out to be done by people in the field with a measuring device. Recently, an online poll was conducted during a webinar to update that research. It also showed that visual inspections in combination with mobile measuring devices are still the most applied form of collecting data for predictive maintenance.” “I have seen examples of this myself. For example, ERIKS does surveys of steam traps, usually once a year. We looked for sensors

new hose is delivered. In combination with a visual inspection for damage such as cracks or dehydration, you can assess whether the hose is still good or needs to be repaired or replaced. We at ERIKS understand that people remain an important part of predictive maintenance and it doesn’t all have to be digital straight away. “
“Humans remain an important part of predictive maintenance.” Contract monitoring ERIKS provides a contract monitoring service, as predictive maintenance needs to be carried out over a number of years. “Only when you see a trend, you can determine when parts or machines need maintenance or replacement, which requires a longer-term contract. For example, ERIKS has recently acquired a large project for all the valves at a terminal. When they deliver valves, they are assembled, tested and delivered with a test certificate, which immediately provides a baseline measurement on which to base the that could detect whether the traps were

The role of ERIKS ERIKS has set up a separate team for asset management. The reason for this is that they have a lot of knowledge about the solutions and products they sell and are well placed to

Fabrice set up I-Care way back in 2004 after working for Emerson. During his civil engineering degree course he had prepared a thesis on the application of AI to deliver predictive maintenance through vibration analysis. I-care has grown considerably over the years and is now active in 11 subsidiaries outside of Belgium, mostly in Europe, but also in the US
the fourth one which we are living through right now is the application of data over the internet. Back in 2004, many maintenance organisations hadn’t even caught up with Industry 3.0, let alone 4.0. It is unthinkable these days to have
Managers are most interested in the benefits that come from in-depth data analysis. With a digital Industry 4.0 predictive maintenance solution in place, maintenance decisions are based on hard, real-life data and life cycle evaluations, rather than estimates. I-Care has recently completed a study on more than 200,000 assets worldwide and found that 26% have failures running at any time. Of these 26%, the top failure reason at around 16% is bearings. The second most common problem is lubrication, accounting for around 10%. The data results are particularly useful for board members as they help to support investment

bearing replacement schemes, training, etc. In other words, digital predictive maintenance helps managers to make the right decisions and save money over the lifecycle of an asset.
Changes on the shop-floor In most industrial settings such as factories or mills, you have a range of different people involved with machinery and plant - maintenance managers, reliability engineers, technicians, machine operators, etc. For maintenance managers, predictive maintenance helps them to justify the quality of work and ask for budget increases based on real data. They can adapt the maintenance budget each year rather than using linear increases. 42 |
resulting in less people going close to machinery, which in turn reduces accidents. Plant managers should also plan to roll out Industry 4.0 initiatives, especially predictive maintenance, across multiple machines. They should look to implement systems that can be copy and pasted across various assets if it proves to be a success on one. In other words, they should focus on wide-scale implementation.
Now is the time to invest in predictive maintenance solutions Industry 4.0 is in full-flow. The problem is,
For example, one year the budget may go up, whereas the next it may go down depending on predicted failures. This makes budget management much easier to carry out. I-Care data helps companies to improve productivity. For example, one company realised that they were only using a particular asset to 50% of its capacity. The board decided

Climate change and environmental issues are no longer a far-off issue. The unprecedented weather conditions with dramatic consequences that we have seen in Europe this summer, have forced us to face reality and have accelerated the trend towards a more environmentally conscious entrepreneurship. An increasing number of companies started focussing on or are intensifying their approach to sustainability and a more conscious use of energy and materials. Suppliers also play an important role in this process of reaching a more circular economy. SKF, material and service supplier for rotating equipment, is striving more than ever to offer its products and services while reducing its carbon footprint. Oskar Diergaarde, Business Manager Rotating Equipment Performance and Sustainability, elaborates SKF’s vision on sustainability. Clear strategy towards a circular economy
“T
he floods that we have suffered recently in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have made people feel the urge to intervene
and change old ways of working. Climate change has been on the table in boardrooms for a longer time. At SKF, we have been working on it for almost two decades. But now, it’s also seeping through to the levels of maintenance engineers and reliability engineers. Laws are changing, and the European Union’s Green Deal is turning into legislation that companies have to live up to. So whether you believe in climate change or not, the changes are coming and everybody has to deal with it.”, Oskar explains.

“All in all, it makes life easier for technicians
Going mobile means Balta is using the SAP Field Service Management (FSM) functionality of SAP. “ It’s in fact a software suite that SAP acquired two years ago from a Swiss company called Core Systems, and it’s now tightly integrated with the SAP Plant Maintenance and Customer Service solutions and SAP’s more modern Intelligent Asset Management (IAM) cloud solutions. As a pioneer, you know that a couple of things will certainly go wrong,” Geert says. “I will openly share our challenges during my presentation at Asset Performance 4.0. ANTWERP IN A NUTSHELL
T
he Port of Antwerp is home to the largest integrated (petro)chemical cluster in
City Center
Europe with 19 million tonnes of chemical production capacity and 40 million tonnes of refining capacity. The top 10 of every important, global petrochemical company is present in Antwerp, either with their own production plants or by using
it as a distribution centre. With a surface of over 12.000 ha (about 20,000 football fields) and housing 900 companies, it is the biggest port area in the world. The Port of Antwerp has been an indispensable link in world trade since the Middle Ages.
The city center of Antwerp is the perfect combination of authentic and progressive. Quality is key and you’ll find it in every aspect. Whether you go out for dinner, have a drink at the bar or stroll around, you’ll always feel welcome. Start your trip up north at the MAS, one of the most imposing museums, and work your way down alongside the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Rubens House and the beautiful Botanical Garden. You will find more diamonds in the Diamond Square Mile – where international diamond hallmarks originate – than in the rest of the world. And peppered all over the city are dazzling shop windows full of attractive jewellery designs. And of course, don’t forget to taste the famous Belgian beer and chocolates.
Why did we locate the Asset Performance 4.0 Conference in Antwerp? •

What’s in a name? According to the most known legend about Antwerp, a giant called Antigoon exacted a heavy toll from any seafarer crossing the river Scheldt. If the sailors refused to pay the toll, Antigoon mercilessly chopped off one of their hands. A brave Roman soldier called Silvius Brabo killed the giant in a battle, chopped off his hand and threw it in the Scheldt. Eventually the

After a while, this results in an accumulation of sludge, which is ‘thrown onto the river bank’ again and again or is ‘aangeworpen’ in Dutch. Aanwerpen, Antwerp. Less exciting in other words than Brabo and Antigoon. But the only correct explanation for the name of the beautiful city of Antwerp.

It’s a great folk tale, but the city’s name is not derived from ‘hand werpen’.. Sorry to spoil the fun. How did Antwerp get its name then? The Scheldt still plays a key role. It is a tidal river, between low and high
