HEAD OF SCHOOL
Just last week, I sat down to my usual Monday night dinner with our boarders. A ninth grade student who’s been with us for three years landed on the bench beside me. As is often the case in dinner conversations, I asked Alejandro how his day had gone. “Fine,” he replied with his trademark smile and then added, “but I rarely have a bad day at Bement.” It was a simple statement on his part, offered in casual conversation with his head of school. To that head of school, however, it was profound. I was delighted to know that this was his experience of his school life. I was excited to see a fifteen-year-old reflecting so thoughtfully on the quality of that school life. I was immediately filled with gratitude over being in a school where I can so readily have this kind of easy exchange with students. And finally, I realized how closely Alejandro had captured my own experience of Bement. I, too, rarely have a bad day. The string of wonderful days that quickly constitutes a school year is possible because of your support. We have a full and rich program that provides our students with a relevant core curriculum augmented by world languages, art, singing, instrumental music, physical education, and athletics. Too many American schools have lost those essential parts of child development. Because of you, our faculty and staff are compensated at respectful levels that honor their work. Your support creates an international community of young people who have an enviable education in world cultures, made even more meaningful because the lessons are delivered through authentic friendships. Many alumni gifts have allowed us to christen the head’s residence Mary Hawks House; it’s an honor to live in a home that memorializes a legendary Bement teacher, alumna, and Deerfield resident. Because of you, our boarding girls have moved into a beautiful, happy, and safe new dorm whose design and energy-efficiency attract attention from architects throughout New England and beyond. Our list of reasons for why we appreciate your generosity is endless. For now, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your part in the goodness of our days. Look forward to our Bement Bulletin next summer; there you’ll see countless images and read the stories that bear testimonial to all that you inspire. With warmest regards,
‘ Shelley Borror Jackson Head of School

Dear Bement families and friends, Many hands make light work. The Bement School family of donors exemplifies this adage. During these uncertain economic times, it is especially gratifying to know that some 490 generous donors chose to make their beloved Bement a priority in their charitable giving for fiscal year 2012. For that, thank you! Each of you contributed to our exceeding the $310,000 goal. As important as it is to reach our Annual Fund goal each year, it is equally important to remember the “things” made possible because of it. These are just some examples that come to mind: paints and paper for the art classrooms, test tubes and computers for the labs, current resources for the library, lawn mowers and compact fluorescent bulbs to keep our eleven-acre campus green, and funds that allow us to increase financial aid opportunities available to a diversity of students and families. In short, you made it possible for us to keep Bement the family-oriented, facultyrich, and academically-productive school we have come to know and expect. Truly, we couldn’t have done it without you. On behalf of our students — the richest recipients of your generosity— please accept our gratitude. Elsewhere in this report my colleagues, Shelley Borror Jackson and Ken Cuddeback, report on the many other ways in which donors rose to support a host of funding needs during the year. But I want to take this opportunity to thank you especially for supporting the Annual Fund, truly the cornerstone upon which all our fundraising efforts are built. In the coming year, we hope to again include your name in our growing donor report and to report on our goal to add more members to The Phoenix Society, Bement’s expanding bequest program. Just as the Annual Fund provides for the present, Phoenix Society members provide for the future. No matter how you choose to support Bement, please remember you don’t need to be a millionaire to make a difference, to leave a legacy. Thank you for your generosity in 2012 and thank you, in advance, for keeping The Bement School strong and vibrant as we head into our 90th year! Finally, please join me in welcoming my new colleague and assistant, Sheila Loveland. After ten years on staff at Deerfield Academy, she brings her poise, technological know-how, wit, and wisdom to our alumni and development office. With warmest regards,
Diana Stiles

BUSINESS OFFICE
Bement Weathers a Year of Challenge and Change. The past year saw The Bement School deal with the effects of two natural disasters that had significant impacts on our campus. The year also saw our board approve and begin the construction of a second dormitory building on the north end of campus. The year began with the visit of Tropical Storm Irene on August 28th, resulting in flooding of the first floor of Jiayi House, Wright House, and Bement House. October 28th saw the arrival of a freak snowstorm that left the school closed without power for four days and caused additional damage to our campus. Our operations were impacted by the natural events, but our budget planning and the help from FEMA helped us finish the year with strong operating results. Enrollments in both the upper and lower schools remained strong for FY12. Our final operating results for the year ending June 30, 2012, were healthy, resulting in an operating surplus of nearly $300,000. Net Tuition and Fee revenue rose this past year to over $4,580,000. Total Revenue was $5,473,673 with modest growth in most income areas. Overall investment activity was down by over $180,000 as our investment growth slowed. Our Contributions and Gifts were about equal to our fundraising efforts in FY2011. Expenses for the year increased 5.4% to $5,175,547. Our largest increases were in Student Services where a change in accounting procedures resulted in increased revenue and expenses for our tutoring and instructional support. The expense total also included costs associated with the recovery efforts from the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Irene and the snowstorm in October. The Bement School continues to invest in our facilities across the campus. This year saw not only the groundbreaking for a new dormitory, but also repairs to many buildings on campus. We completed projects that include the renovation of the dining hall kitchen, replacement of roof sections on the Keith Building and Bement House, a complete painting of the Mary Hawks House, replacement and improvements to the outdoor basketball courts and playgrounds, sidewalk repairs on the main campus, and new flooring in the Arts Wing and Keith School House. As we begin planning for the 2014 school year, we are feeling the effects of a decline in enrollment during the current 2013 fiscal year. This decline is the result

of a demographic dip in the population of children eligible for kindergarten through grade 3 and a national trend that sees families delaying the start of independent school educations for financial reasons. With 220 students enrolled for the year, our 2012-13 budget carries a very modest projected surplus of $16,800 as we continue to provide the strongest program possible for our students and families. Our plans for 2013-14 are based on a modest increase in enrollment levels and a return to a healthier surplus. Our board of trustees, administration, faculty, and staff remain dedicated to conservatively managing our resources, providing a strong program for our families and students. Respectfully,
Ken Cuddeback

Types of Giving Annual Fund Bement relies on the generous annual support of our community of alumni, parents, families, and friends to sustain our programs. Annual giving supports all of Bement’s programs and is used the year in which it is received. Legacy Giving/The Phoenix Society An investment in Bement through a bequest provision or any other planned gift vehicle is a meaningful contribution that demonstrates a strong vote of confidence in the mission and value of a Bement education. Giving options include a bequest of cash, stock, personal or real property via a will, or beneficiary giving through a trust, retirement plan, or life insurance. Donors are encouraged to discuss their charitable giving plans and needs with their own financial and legal advisors. Our alumni and development office welcomes inquiries and notification of intent in matters of legacy giving. Restricted gifts These gifts are designated for specific capital projects or programs. Please contact our development office for more information. Endowment gifts These gifts are permanently restricted to support Bement’s programs and to help sustain the school over the long term.

The Bement School provides an education based on time-honored school traditions and values for children in kindergarten through ninth grade, day and boarding. From the classrooms to the dorms, we live and learn as a family, while encouraging responsibility for our own work and actions. Bement actively seeks an academically diverse, international, and multi-cultural student body. Students and adults at Bement work together to create a climate of acceptance, kindness and challenge which nurtures each child intellectually, creatively, physically, and emotionally.
