Coats for the Community distribution set for Oct. 7

BEMIDJI — Donations from United Way of Bemidji Area’s annual Coats for the Community drive will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 7, at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N.

Any person in need is welcome to collect winter items.

The coat drive is one of United Way’s community impact initiatives aimed to help meet the basic needs of those who may otherwise have to go without, while also helping families become more financially stable, a release said.

Donations of items will continue to be collected through Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Lueken’s Village Foods and Dress Club Cleaners.

The annual coat drive is supported in partnership with Paul Bunyan Broadcasting, Paul Bunyan Communications, Dress Club Cleaners and Lueken’s Village Foods.

Senior Center to host acrylic painting classes

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will offer acrylic painting classes taught by Kathy Sanders at 1 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

Space is limited and

pre-registration is advised, all classes are free to members and $10 for non-members.

Class registration forms are available at the Bemidji Senior Center.

Parks and Rec to hold fall kickboxing classes

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will offer fitness kickboxing from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 5-26 and Oct. 2-24, at Bemidji City Park.

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will host National Coffee with a Cop Day from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

“This free event is open to the whole community,” a release said. “We will have local Bemidji police, sheriff department staff and state troopers here to answer your questions or to share your concerns with.”

Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

Oak Hills to host variety of homecoming events

BEMIDJI — Oak Hills Christian College will host Homecoming 2023 activities on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the college.

The day will kick off with a Run for the Hills 5K Fundraiser for the Student Grant Fund with registration at 8 a.m. and the run starting at 9 a.m. All participants will receive a T-shirt and medals will be awarded for first, second and third place based on age and gender categories.

Preregistration can be completed at www.oakhills.edu/alumni/events.

Cost is $20 per person or $30 per family. Registration the morning of the race will increase to $25 per person. Brunch will follow the 5K. The afternoon will include inflatables, games and outside activities as well as opportunities to visit with Oak Hills President Martin Giese and other staff. Other activities will include a scavenger hunt, face-painting and workshops with more details becoming available on the Oak Hills

website. The day will finish with an outside barbecue buffet followed by s’mores around the fire pit.

Attendees are encouraged to bring an old piece of Oak Hills Christian College apparel for display during the day, which qualifies someone to be entered into a drawing for an item from Oak Hills’ bookstore.

Gonvick CreateIt Studio to host Pumpkin Days art walk

GONVICK — The CreateIt Studio in Gonvick is set to host an art walk during the 30th annual Pumpkin Days from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Clear Waters Life Center, 226 Elm St. in Gonvick.

During the art walk, area artisans will demonstrate diverse forms of art, a release said.

Featured artists will include Nikki Besser demonstrating paper quilling, Connie Nunemaker creating wire-wrap jewelry, Ann-Marie Newman exhibiting handpainted kitchen towels, Rick Paulin showing painting with acrylics and Janie Walker demonstrating leather carving.

The event is free and open to the public and artists will have items available for purchase.

Bagley Legion Auxiliary to host Fall Harvest Festival

BAGLEY — American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 16 will host a Fall Harvest Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Bagley American Legion Auditorium, 112 Main Ave. N.

The auxiliary members will be serving soup and sandwiches, baked goods, and an assortment of “new to you” items that are looking for a new

home, a release said.  Vendors who would like to sell can rent a space for $20 each, with or without a table. Spaces are first come first serve. Produce is welcome.

All proceeds will go toward helping veterans, their families, children/ youth and the community and nation, the release said.

Dial-A-Ride to host fall color ride fundraiser

BEMIDJI — Dial-ARide of Minnesota will host a fall color ride fundraiser starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Lueken’s South parking lot, 609 Washington Ave.  Riders will make their way to Federal Dam State Park, where there will be an at-will donation picnic. They will then travel to Dairy Queen in Walker where there will be a 50/50 raffle. The ride will conclude at the Cenex South parking lot in Bemidji, making for a 110-mile round trip.

All donations will go to Dial-A-Ride Minnesota with the goal of purchasing a motorcycle trailer for the organization, which aims to make sure bikers get home safe when incapacitated.

Anyone interested in participating in the ride can register starting at 10 a.m. the morning of the race with a $15 entry fee, a $10 fee for any passenger riders, and a $25 fee per car load.

Bemidji Senior Center to offer line dancing classes, book club BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will offer line dancing classes and a book club this October at the center, 216

Third St. NW.

The center will host line dancing classes at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 3-24. During the Oct. 24 class, participants will join the center’s Halloween Dance.

After-school clubs available through Parks and Rec BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department is now offering two after-school clubs for youth.

The Silly Sports Club will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Oct. 19, at City Park. Cost to participate is $45 for the whole series.

Gallery North seeks artists for Summer Sampler Season

BEMIDJI — Gallery North recently announced its first-ever

Summer Sampler Season, a program that will feature artists’ work at the gallery through September.

Gallery North is inviting artists who have never shown at the gallery to display and sell their work for the summer.

2D artists will be limited to displaying two works of art at a time, with a size limit of 20 by 16 inches. JPEG images and a description of the medium and size of the artwork can be submitted by emailing deedeeminn@yahoo.com.

3D artists will also be limited to two works of art displayed at a time. Artists can stop in at Gallery North to show samples of their 3D artwork during regular business hours. Pieces sent by artists will be juried.

All artists selling at the gallery are required to fill out a W-9 for IRS reporting purposes. Gallery North will keep 20% of the price on sold items.

The Summer Sampler Season will run through September. There is no deadline but space is limited so artists are welcome to participate as space allows. To learn more, visit gallerynorthbemidji.com.

Watermark to offer book marketing support group

BEMIDJI — Watermark Art Center is offering a

book marketing support group where authors can learn how to market their books on the third Thursday of every month starting in September.

The monthly membership club will offer authors the opportunity to focus on necessary marketing tasks, have accountability to get their marketing done and receive tutelage from an expert book marketing coach.

The group is for serious authors of all publishing paths, a release said. Authors will learn from Emily Enger, founder of Good Enough Book Marketing, and spend time working on the marketing strategies they choose.

The club will hold meetings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month starting in September and running through April 2024, at Watermark’s education studio. Preferred participants are authors of creative genres.  Due to limited space, participants must submit an application prior to registration, the release said. If accepted, applicants will receive further instructions to complete the course registration. The application process is free. If accepted, the cost for the course is $500. Baking Challenge Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Monday, Oct. 2, at Bemidji City Park and costs $15 per participant.

LEGO Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 20, at Bemidji City Park and costs $15 per participant.

Natural Choice Farmers Market open each Saturday

BEMIDJI — Bemidji’s Natural Choice Farmer’s Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through the end of October, in the parking lot in front of Frizzel Furniture at Second Street and Beltrami Avenue in downtown Bemidji.

The vendors, all from the Bemidji area, offer naturally grown produce and flowers, homemade baked goods, jellies, jams and pickles, meats and a variety of crafts. Local musicians will provide entertainment while customers shop.

‘Quasquicentennial: A look back 125 years’ at NELL

BAGLEY — Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning continues its fall series with historian

Tamara Edevold presenting “Quasquicentennial: A look back 125 years” at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 36021 County 7.

“The year 1898 was an extremely busy one in the area that would soon become Clearwater County,” a release said. “New towns were popping up, speculation was the word of the day.”

In her presentation, Edevold will describe the events leading up to the formation of Bagley and Shevlin, share the lives

of some of the leading characters and recount the push for a new county to be carved off from Beltrami County, the release said.

Edevold has been the executive director of the Clearwater County Historical Society for 33 years and is a lifelong resident of Clearwater County. She has a degree in History from Minnesota State University Moorhead and studied Museum Studies at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Her parents, Milo and “little” Ruthie Anderson, were well known to the Clearwater County community.

Doors open at 9 a.m. with the program starting at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

Comedian Jeff Dunham to bring ‘Still Not Canceled’ tour to Bemidji

BEMIDJI — The Sanford Center is set to host comedian Jeff Dunham on his “Still Not Canceled” tour at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, at the center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.

One artist, five characters, Dunham is returning to the Sanford Center after almost a decade.

Great River Rescue announces Pet Fixers clinics

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year.

Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.

Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.  Remaining clinics for this year are: Oct. 7 and 8 Nov. 4 and 5

Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.  St. Theodore’s to hold fall home goods, bake sale

Sanford Health to host annual Walk to Remember

BEMIDJI — Sanford Health will host its annual Walk to Remember at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, 1300 Anne St. NW.

The event brings families together to “reflect, share about and remember” children lost to early pregnancy, stillbirth, newborn death and sudden infant loss syndrome, a release said.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow the walk. A silent auction will also be held. There is no cost to attend and all attendees will receive a free T-shirt.

Proceeds from the walk will benefit the PETAL (Parents Embracing Time After Loss) program, which provides mementos and support information to every parent who experiences a loss of a baby or infant within the Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota Region.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR and AED courses set

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will hold Heartsaver First Aid CPR and AED courses from 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 9, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4, at Bemidji State’s Gillett Wellness Center, 1801 Birch Lane NE.

The class is geared toward anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for their job, regulatory, or other requirements, or anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting, a release said.

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.

The course will teach:

First aid basics.

Medical emergencies.

Injury emergencies.

Environmental emergencies.

Preventing illness and injury.

Adult CPR and AED use.

Opioid-associated lifethreatening emergencies.

Optional modules in child CPR AED and infant CPR.

The cost is $105 per

Defensive Driving Refresher Courses scheduled BEMIDJI — Defensive Driving Refresher Courses will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, through Zoom.
