Easy lawn Sanford Bemidji to alternatives host Boo to the Flu METRO CREATIVE SERVICES A traditional lawn may not be right for every property nor desired by every homeowner. There is no denying that lawns take time and effort to establish and daily or weekly maintenance to thrive. Homeowners who find that a traditional lawn is not practical can explore some low-maintenance alternatives.

Wildflower meadow

Homeowners with wide swaths of property may discover meadows are cost- and time-efficient. Stores sell special wildflower meadow mixes of seeds or homeowners can use wildflower plug plants throughout areas where grasses are left to grow longer. This natural area can be a home to wildlife and an idyllic backdrop to a home. Most meadows only require a spring or summer and autumn cut to thrive and look good.

Ornamental grasses

Partition areas of the property for ornamental grasses to grow. The gardening resource Elemental Green says ornamental grasses tend to be drought-resistant and low-maintenance. They won’t need much fertilizer and are often resistant to pests as well. Ornamental grasses grow in tufts or sprays and will not require mowing. However, they are not ideal for areas that get foot traffic.

Moss

Moss can thrive in shady areas and ones where the soil tends to stay a bit damp. Moss is velvety soft and green, so it can mimic the look of a traditional lawn but won’t require mowing and other upkeep. Because it spreads quickly, moss can take over quite rapidly. You will need to protect areas where you do not want moss by creating barriers to stop spread.

Gravel

Stone and gravel areas can reduce maintenance in the landscape and require very little upkeep. When gravel is installed correctly, weeds may not grow readily. Gravel installation may include laying heavy-duty, semipermeable landscape fabric, which is available in home improvement centers. Gravel is cheaper than pavers and can be just as beautiful.

Artificial turf

If the desired look is a lawn without all the upkeep, there are various artificial grass options on the market. Homeowners who opt for artificial turf can save money and space devoted to lawn mowers and other lawn tools.

Patience, useful tips pay off with crappie fest

T

here’s no way that any one person can know everything that’s going on at any of Minnesota’s larger lakes. So too, knowing what’s happening in any given region is even less likely, and keeping tabs on the whole state; impossible! That’s why I, Cub Reporter, continually offer readers the opportunity to contribute fishing tips that might help their fellow anglers enjoy the time they have to spend fishing. It doesn’t happen as often as I’d like, but it does happen, and this week, reader contributions produced results that I am really proud of. I may be able to share a few of those testimonials provided that I have time to get with everybody and arrange for their permission. But before we get to that, let me share with you how one of those reader contributions helped Mr. Bill and his son, Matt Fromelt, my fishing customers, get in on a really “crappie” experience this week. The Fromelts already had walleyes from the trip to Winnie this past Monday, and on Tuesday, we were searching for crappies. After considering the logistics for a suitable meeting place, I sorted through ideas about lakes that were reasonably close to their cabin and then came up with a short list. There were 4 or 5 lakes that could have worked, so I decided to start with the closest one first, then move to another one if needed. The lake I chose was a good fit for my profile of an ideal fall crappie fishing lake. The size, 491 acres, is manageable, I can scan the entire lake in a few hours. The structure is simple, there are weedy shoreline flats around the entire perimeter and only one mid-lake hole. The maximum depth of that mid-lake basin, 29 feet of water is a hair deep for me, but I’d fished the lake once this summer and knew the average-size crappies. I figured that most of the

again, numerous smallsized perch. By now, it was 11:30 and I was preparing to make a move to the next lake. But remembering an email that came in on Monday, the gist of which was that the reader had found fish fish we could catch would spread out over the flats one day, but the next day be “keepers,” so even if found that they’d moved, we fished in the deepest locating them this time in water, the risk of barotrauma would be manage- deeper water. So, before loading up and moving able. Besides, the crapout, I decided to take one pies we caught on my more look at the deeper past few trips have been hole. I’m the surface water was 48 guessing that it took Mr. degrees. As we moved Bill about 14 seconds to deeper into the center, 51 hook the first fish, and it to 52 degrees was the turned out to be a keeper average. Even though I crappie. Not long afterhad the mid-depth flats ward, I caught one then fishing strategy in mind, I knew that I better check Bill caught another one and then Matt started gig“the hole” before doing gling and then, we poked anything else. I scanned around that hole until the the whole thing, traveled larder was filled. through the center, and Our presentation was then scanned around the nothing fancy, Bill stuck edges. My side imaging with an 1/8-ounce Live did pick up one small pack of fish, but when we Bait Jig and a small minnow. To me, it looked a roaming with the side lot like the old Puddle imaging again. I didn’t see much, but there were Jumpers, and I’ll bet those would have worked a few marks tight to the fine too. bottom, so we tried to Luckily, most of the find crappies there, but fish we caught were nice again, found only smallenough, 11 to 12 inches, to sized perch. OK, well they must still be harvested. Because even though we were not be on the weed edges fishing in super deep then, that’s where they were on my other trip, I’ll water, barotrauma did become an issue. Blowing look there, I thought. When we started working in the fish’s mouth, the trick I shared last week the weed edges, the boys stuck with crappie baits. I for helping release fish worked most of the time, figured that a night but not always. Throughcrawler might help me out the day, there were locate some sunfish, and they’d be a suitable alter- temptations to sort out only the largest crappies, native to crappies. I saw but we had to keep some some fish in the weeds, smaller fish that could but the only ones we not be revived. I agreed to caught were a couple of keep 5 of the smaller fish, pike, a few walleyes and

allowing the crew to have their limits on larger ones. The extra 5, the ones I could have harvested, but didn’t, were counted in my imaginary bag limit. Throughout the day, I used worms periodically because I thought there may have been sunfish in the neighborhood. I can’t explain why we only caught 1 bluegill all day long but that’s what happened. I don’t know if I just couldn’t find them, or if I did, but they just weren’t biting. There are some lakes where sunfish don’t activate until the sun goes down and for all I know, this lake is one of them. I don’t have enough experience with it to know for sure. By day’s end, we were all happy, but I wonder what would have happened if I’d given up at 11:30 and gone somewhere else? I don’t know if those crappies, at first were holding so tight to the bottom that I couldn’t see them on my graph. Or maybe if they were on an early morning feeding run, riding too high in the water column to be spotted. And I can’t say that they weren’t somewhere else either, I only know that if I hadn’t recalled the reader’s email, and the account of his recent crappie fishing experience, I might not have taken that last chance look at the midlake hole. I might have given those boys a ride to somewhere better, or maybe somewhere worse, I don’t know. I do know that it’s better to be in a boat than in a truck, so whenever I can avoid switching lakes, I do.

How to support local agriculture this fall METRO CREATIVE SERVICES The global pandemic that has upended daily life has exacted a toll on many industries. Businesses have been asked to close or temporarily scale back operations, while organizers of recreational gatherings have been tasked with reevaluating the practicality and safety of annual events. Throughout the United States and Canada, autumn fairs, exhibitions and activities provide revenue for many people. But due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, many of these annual events have been postponed, adversely affecting local agricultural industries as a result. Governments in certain places have responded to the cancellations and offered assistance to local farmers and agricultural industries. The general public can pitch in to help offset some of the financial losses accrued by local farms. • Check for virtual events. Some fall fairs or livestock events have been moved to the digital realm. That means competitors who were entering livestock or even home crafts into competitions can still participate. • Support local farms or orchards. Fall is harvest season in many areas, making this a popular time of year to visit

nearby farms and to purchase fruits and vegetables directly from the source. Many farms have implemented safety protocols that align with COVID-19 health recommendations to safely welcome visitors. Things may look a little differently at orchards and farms, but smaller crowds and wearing masks should not compromise the fun of picking your own foods. • Explore farm-to-table. Private individuals as well as restaurant owners can develop relationships with area agriculture producers to increase the availability of farm-totable offerings. Restaurants can revamp menus to include a greater share of items sourced from nearby farms. Individuals also can rely on produce stands and farmers’ markets to stock their pantries. Some farms may offer delivery and mailorder as well. • Offer financial services. Financial advisors can help farmers who are struggling with finances work through their options. Institutions may be able to extend the terms of loan repayments, refinance loans, restructure debt, or get credit extensions.
