NEWS BRIEF
Back in the day
Deuces Wild Dueling Pianos return to Bemidji Feb. 10
BEMIDJI — Back by popular demand, Deuces Wild Dueling Pianos is returning to the Sanford Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. “Deuces Wild Dueling Pianos is a fan favorite of northern Minnesota and has captivated Bemidji audiences time and time again,” a release said. Lead performers Ted and Dave have been performing together for over 17 years. The duo showcases a mix of music and parodies ranging from country to rap songs. “The two musicians have crafted what has become a nationally acclaimed show of music, comedy and intense audience engagement,” the release said. “Son of a miner from the northern woods of Minnesota, David Charles Eichholz is a versatile, self-taught

musician who plays the piano, guitar, saxophone, harmonica, trumpet and countless other instruments.” He was later recruited by Little Ditty’s, a Dueling Piano Bar at the Mall of America, where he performed four nights a week for five years. “Ted got his start in Deuces Wild by walking out of his day job and demanding an audition. Although he hadn’t previously played in a dueling piano-style show, his amazing showmanship and obvious ability to perform as a world-class entertainer blew away the competition,” the release said. “Since then, he has played thousands of dueling piano shows with performances all over the country.” Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com or from the Sanford Center ticket office.

The waiting game continues for ‘good ice’ A ngling traffic was minimal in the area last weekend. Steady rainfall and warm temperatures persisted, and not many were interested in fishing in the puddles. Some folks did though, and they report that while wet conditions prevented new ice from forming, they didn’t kill the ice on lakes where it had already formed. Lakes that have “good” ice are small, shallower ones and because of that crappies, sunfish and perch got the lion’s share of attention locally. On shallow shorelines and back bays of larger lakes,
Darkhouse spearing for northern pike is getting some attention, too. At Lake of the Woods, overnight temperatures had been getting just cold enough to make some new ice. On the south shore, some of the rental operators are transporting anglers to and from their day house rentals. Most of their landings
have been closed to general traffic though. As of this morning, there are still numerous advisories about sketchy travel conditions. Any off-road exploration of ice conditions should be left to the experts. Conditions for forming ice took a turn for the better overnight on Sunday. Outside my office, the temperature is 9 degrees right now, so lakes that already had good ice will be dry again today. Locally, daytime temperatures are forecast to warm up again throughout the week but will be cold enough
overnight to form a little bit of new ice. Further north, temperatures might not be ideal for a fast freeze, but will be slightly colder. Overnight temps in the teens, daytime highs in the low 30s should be good news for rental operators. Without wild fluctuations in air temperatures, the ice will be somewhat less prone to cracking and heaving, that should make developing trails easier. Personally, I think we should be happy that it rained this weekend and did not turn to snow. That warm spell delayed some
folks from getting out on the ice, but less snow cover means that we could have better ice conditions later this winter. There isn’t much precipitation in the week’s forecast, so by Christmas, I think we’ll be seeing some good reports. Community Table offers sit-down meals
Fun ways to enjoy the start of the winter season METRO CREATIVE SERVICES Winter begins on Dec. 21 and ends on March 19. Many people lament the arrival of winter, perhaps thinking the colder temperatures and shorter hours of sunlight will compromise their chances to have fun. Even though particularly chilly thermostat readings or stormy conditions can hamper some plans, when people dig deeper they may find that even the coldest days present opportunities for enjoyment. When winter begins, the following activities can make for an entertaining way to celebrate the arrival of the season. • Build a snow creation. Use the first significant snowfall of the season to organize a snowman, snowwoman, or snow-animal-making event or contest. Learn how to budget and save for big-ticket items METRO CREATIVE SERVICES When faced with making a significant purchase, or even financing an unexpected emergency expense, consumers are tempted to turn to credit to pay for the goods or services. While credit utilization maintains an important place in building a strong financial reputation, it can quickly put a person underwater financially, and interest fees can increase the price of big-ticket items by a significant amount. The financial resource The Motley Fool says American households carried a total of $17.1 trillion in debt as of the second quarter of 2023. A report from Equifax Canada indicated Canadian consumer debt rose to $2.32 trillion in 2023. Substantial consumer debt can limit financial flexibility, so individuals who are looking ahead to new vehicles or vacations or even home renovations can first try to save for such expenses in lieu of borrowing. Budgeting and saving may not lead to immediate gratification, but it can help consumers avoid debt and ultimately create more financial flexibility down the road. • Know exactly what you have. Too often people take a casual approach to their finances. At any given time they may not know whether the money they’re making is actually covering all of the bills, and how much money, if any, is left over. Spend a few months cataloging all credits and debits to your accounts. Pay attention to times of year when income is higher or when spending increases. • Know your goal and price. Rayhons Financial, a financial services company, suggests identifying

Some simple financial planning can help people save and budget for big-ticket items more readily. exactly how much you’ll need for a purchase. Estimate on the high side of expenses so as not to go over budget. Treat a bigticket item just like a utility bill. • Create a separate expense account. When all of your funds are together in one bank account, it is easier to spend the money on other purchases rather than the larger one in mind. Open a separate account and move your “extra” earnings into that account to save for your large expense. Automating the savings by setting up an automatic deduction
deposited into this account on payday can make savings even easier. • Review your budget periodically. Figure out if there are areas where you can cut back and allocate more money to your overall savings or the special savings for the big-ticket item. For example, you may be able to downgrade to a more manageable mobile phone plan or dine out less frequently. • Time the purchase right. In addition to only buying when you have the money saved, you can look at the calendar to figure out the best time to make that purchase. Does
your state or province offer a sales tax holiday? Some times of year you may get a bonus, tax refund or birthday gifts
that can be earmarked for big-ticket items. Avoid purchasing big items during times when you must pay for other significant
expenses, such as tuition, summer camp fees and insurance payments.

What to know about respiratory syncytial virus METRO CREATIVE SERVICES Winter is synonymous with the holidays, snow and, of course, the common cold. Though colds are not exclusive to winter, they tend to be more common in the colder months of the year, when people typically spend more time indoors, making it easier for cold viruses to spread from one person to another. As cold season hits full swing, it’s important to recognize that the common cold is not always behind those uncomfortable coughs and sniffles. Respiratory syncytial virus, often referred to as RSV, is a serious respiratory virus that produces symptoms similar to those associated with the common cold. Some basic knowledge of RSV can ensure people seek the treatment they need to overcome it.
When is RSV most likely to occur?
According to the ALA, the peak season for RSV is fall through spring. However, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment notes that RSV infections rose sharply in summer 2021. Though that spike was likely due to a relaxation of coronavirus restrictions, it underscores that RSV can strike in summer, even if it’s less likely to spread during times of year when people tend to spend more time outdoors.
What are the symptoms of RSV?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that people infected with RSV typically exhibit symptoms within four to six days of infection. Such symptoms, which usually appear in stages and not all at once, What is RSV? may include: The Mayo Clinic • Runny nose reports that RSV is a • Decrease in appetite virus that infects the • Coughing lungs and respiratory • Sneezing tract. How is RSV managed?
The CDC notes that antiviral medication is not typically part of a treatment for RSV, as most infections go away within a week or two without intervention. Symptoms such as fever and pain can be managed with over-the-counter fever reducers and pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen (the CDC notes that aspirin should never be given to children). Drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and speaking with a physician prior to taking something or giving a child something to treat RSV is recommended.
Is there an RSV vaccination?
The CDC recommends immunization for those most at risk of serious illness from RSV. High-risk groups include infants, toddlers and adults age 60 and older. Parents and older adults are urged to speak to their child’s doctors and their own physicians about RSV vaccination. RSV symptoms mirror those of the common cold, but the virus can be more serious than that. More information is available at cdc.gov and lung.org.
