Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5

BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times best-selling author, Emmy-winning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE. Berens was last in Bemidji at the Sanford Center in November 2022, where he performed to a soldout crowd with his humor and uniquely hilarious Midwest comedy, a release said. He began his career working for MTV News’ Choose or Lose. In 2012, Tribune Media tapped him to host the comedic news show Nightcap. In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water”

while reporting for KDAF, a television station in Dallas, Texas. Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than 16 million views.

In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to view his content. He currently has over 2.6 million Facebook followers. After garnering millions of views, he’s toured the United States selling out venues within minutes.

In 2020, Barens paired up with Horseshoes and Hand Grenades alum Adam Greul to release the music/comedy album, “Unthawed.” The album, which is a mixture of

bluegrass, country and Charlie’s comedy, hit number one on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and number six on the Bluegrass Comedy chart. His first book, “The Midwest Survival Guide,” was released in November 2021 and immediately became a New York Times Best Seller, the release said. Berens also hosts the Cripescast podcast where he interviews musicians, artists, comedians, creators and more to talk about their stories and connections to the Midwest. Guests have included Jeff Foxworthy, Nate Bargatze and Roy Wood, Jr. “We are so excited to bring Charlie Berens back to the Sanford Center,” Bobby Anderson, general manager of the Sanford Center, said in the release. “Charlie has a way of connecting with

Dan Sherman to hold

‘Zone 3 Gardening’

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library, in partnership with the Beltrami County Master Gardeners, is set to host a Zone 3 gardening event with Master Gardener Dan Sherman at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the library, 509 America Ave. Sherman has been gardening since he was 12 years old and will share his experience with gardening in the area, a release said.

Participants will learn about selecting seed, soil and containers, dates to start, lighting and heating, disease prevention and preparing for transplanting. The event is free and open to the public.

50th annual Festival of Nations set

BEMIDJI — Bemidji State University’s international students will celebrate the traditions and cultures of their home countries on Saturday, April 13, at the 50th annual Festival of Nations.

The Festival, hosted by BSU’s International Student Organization, will begin at 4 p.m. in the Beaux Arts Ballroom of BSU’s upper Hobson Memorial Union. The

event is free and open to the public. The Festival of Nations is BSU’s longest-running multicultural festival. This year marks the return of the event following the pandemic. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy free international food and refreshments prepared by international students on campus and participate in engaging cultural activities such as an Afro dance performance, open mic sessions, musical performances, games and more, a release said.

Additionally, guests can look forward to exciting giveaways and entertainment provided by DJ Micah. “We believe that events like the Festivals of Nations serve as an opportunity for fostering cross-cultural appreciation within our community,” International Student Organization President

Watermark Art Center to host springthemed art classes

BEMIDJI — Watermark

Art Center will host a variety of spring-themed classes this April, from a mosaic glass workshop to a basket weaving course.

Participants can sign up to create a stunning stained glass mosaic bird from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Watermark Art Center, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.

JoAnn McFarlin will teach attendees various techniques, including glass cutting, proper adhesive use, grouting and color composition, a release said. This class is geared toward adults and the cost is $65 plus $10 for materials.

Registration is required. The finished piece will be approximately nine inches by four inches and ready to hang.

Local artist Shannon Lucas-Westrum will lead a two-day basket weaving course from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Watermark.

Participants will create their own large farmers market basket while they learn the making of a filled woven base, weaving with flat and round reeds, twining, wrapping handles and making their own accent cordage from locally harvested grasses and leaves, the release said.

Attendees aged 16 and older of all experience levels are welcome. Registration is required. The cost is $60, which includes both days and materials.

Intercultural creative circles

Participants are invited to drop in for the next series of Watermark’s

intercultural creative circles, scheduled for Wednesdays, April 17 through May 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The six sessions will focus on embellishment techniques from both Woodland and Scandinavian traditions including Indigenous ribbon applique arts (Osage and HoChunk style), painting with natural dyes on hide, embroidery and woodland applique, the release said.

Nancy Kingbird will lead this round of sessions with special guests such as Rick Kagibe, Wendy Roy and Karen Goulet. There is no charge or registration required for the creative circles. Parks and Rec to hold book drop-off, swap BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will hold a book drop-off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 18-20, at the Tourist Information Center, to collect books for a book swap from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at the Historic Carnegie Library, 426 Bemidji Ave N. Those who have books

to donate can drop them off April 18-20 and receive a voucher to use at the April 23 book swap. Adult and children’s books will be accepted. Headwaters to host spring pottery classes in April

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host a Pottery and Pints class and Porch Pottery series this April at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

Adult participants can enjoy a relaxing afternoon of glazing pottery pieces at a Pottery and Pints class from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Attendees have the opportunity to bring their favorite beer to enjoy with provided light appetizers as instructor Tom Daly walks them through the process of glazing two pre-made pieces, such as a beer mug, wine mug, plate or bowl, a release said.

Participants can also try out the pottery wheel or other basic pottery techniques. There will be plenty of breaks for

socializing and enjoying beer and food. No art experience is required. ”Come learn in a fun and supportive environment surrounded by friends,” said the release. The cost is $45 and this class is for participants age 21 and older.

Porch Pottery

Participants of all ages can create their own porch pots to give as a Mother’s Day gift or enjoy all summer during the Porch Pottery class series.

Attendees will be given up to 25 pounds of clay to make one or more planters from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21. Participants will glaze their pots from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the last day of class on Saturday, May 11, participants will come to pick up their finished pieces and choose vegetable and flower seedlings to bring

home and plant. A light lunch will also be provided.

Applications open for Artists Engage Community Grant

BEMIDJI — Applications for Region 2 Arts Councils’ new Artists Engage Community Grant are due by Monday, April 15.

Artists Engage Community grants support the creation, production and presentation of

high-quality arts activities that help instill the arts into the community and public life in the region. Arts activities proposed for funding must be artist-led, accessible by the public and connect with community members through the arts.

”Eligible grant proposals must connect and engage with audiences, participants, students, and/or communities to

provide new and/or expanded arts programming to residents of our region’s counties and/or remove barriers that audiences may have to access arts activities,” a release said.

The maximum award is $6,000.

Eligible applicants must reside in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods or Mahnomen Counties. To apply, visit r2arts.
