Bemidji Public Library to host ‘May the 4th: Star Wars Day’
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library is set to host a “May the 4th: Star Wars Day” event on Saturday, May 4, at the library, 509 America Ave. NW.
Attendees can participate in activities all day, including games, costume contests and crafts like a make-your-own lightsaber craft.
There will also be a special appearance by the 501st Legion Cosplayers from noon to 2 p.m. The 501st Legion is an international costuming organization dedicated to celebrating Star Wars. The group will be posing for pictures, showing off their costumes and answering questions, a release said.
The event is free and open to the public.

BEMIDJI — Bemidji’s
Sunrise Rotary Club will hold a Cinco de Mayo holiday fiesta dinner event from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at the Bemidji Eagles Club, 1270 Neilson Ave. SE.
Attendees will enjoy traditional Mexican fare of pork carnitas, a grilled fruit and vegetable medley, nachos and Mexican rice, a release said.
Tickets cost $20 per adult and $10 for children under 12. Participants should enter on the east rear side of the building for the dinner.

Mt. Zion Church to host Family Enrichment classes
BEMIDJI — Family Enrichment classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on select Thursdays, May 9 through June 27, at Mt. Zion Church, 414 Lincoln Ave.
A rosemaling class will be held on May 9 and 23, and June 6, 20 and 27. Participants will use Cand S-shaped brushstrokes to create scroll and flowing lines, floral designs and both subtle and vibrant colors, a release said.
”Scandinavian ancestors brought the art of rosemaling to the United States,” the release said.
“Join us for a fun, relaxed experience into this popular folk art.”
A “learning to draw, drawing to learn class” will be held on May 9 and 23. Participants will explore creative lessons and exercises, allowing them to develop greater skills and confidence in their drawing abilities.
”Everyone at one time used drawing to explore and describe their world,” the release said.
“In our digital world, drawing perhaps is need ed more than ever. Visual thinking skills are best learned through drawing, a critical ability in almost every walk of life.”
A watercolor painting class will be held on June 6 and 20. All sup plies are provided, but participants should bring a painting shirt, the release said.
The classes are for those ages 8 and older. Children must have an adult family member present.

Northern Minnesota’s Women’s Expo set for May 10-11
BEMIDJI — Northern Minnesota’s Largest Women’s Expo will be held on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE. This event will feature numerous vendors, demonstrations, wine tasting, selfie stations, a pop-up thrift store, a panel of women in
business and a keynote speaker, a release said. The entrance fee will cost $5, with 80% of the fee being donated to the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter’s capi tal campaign.
“All donations will go toward our capital cam paign (to build a new shelter),” Michelle Carl son, assistant director of the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter, said in the release. “Building a new shelter offers priva cy, dignity, and a chance to work toward moving on from intimate partner violence for our partici pants. It will also allow us to double the capacity of participants we can help.”

Sonja Larsen to hold printmaking workshop at Watermark
BEMIDJI — Exhibiting artist Sonja Larsen will host an exhibit tour and printmaking workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at Watermark Art Center, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
Larsen will begin by giving a tour of her current exhibit in Watermark’s Lakeview Gallery titled, “Creating Art from Nature.”
Following the tour, Larsen will give a printmaking demonstration featuring her knowledge of making nature prints
from local plants. During the workshop, she will guide participants in creating their very own leaf prints. The event is free and all ages are welcome, a release said.
Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for May 11-12
BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year.
Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including
vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said. Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE. Dates for this year’s clinics are:
• May 11 and 12
• June 1 and 2
July 13 and 14
Aug. 10 and 11
Sept. 7 and 8
Oct. 5 and 6
• Nov. 2 and 3
Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with
all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.
A $40 deposit per animal is required at the time of registration to secure a spot. Those unable to access the website can call (218) 760-1307 to get help with registration.
