Child care grants available from NMF
BEMIDJI — The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is seeking grant applications from agencies and organizations in support of early childhood educational programming.
Applicants must be a public entity, tribal nation, community service agency or 501(c)(3) organization having experience in the operation of, planning for, financing of, advocacy for and/or advancement of the delivery of child care services. Applicants must serve populations in the following: Red Lake or White Earth Nation, or the 12
counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau.
Grant funding can be used for training and technology needs, child care business start-up and expansion, facility modifications or improvements required for licensing or assistance with licensing and other regulatory requirements, a release said.
This is a competitive grant and eligible applicants must have local and or/community projects already in development to create sustainable child care solutions.
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Oct. 3: Phyllis Root will present, “Where is the Lost Forest?” Attendees will learn about the impact of old growth forests and how the Lost Forty was spared from logging after it was mistakenly mapped as a lake.
Oct. 8: “Three Old Guys Snowmobile to Alaska.” Rob Hallstrom, a Menahga native, will share stories from a oncein-a-lifetime adventure, including memorable
events and how the guys decided to make the trip.
Oct. 18: “The Twelve Owls of Minnesota.”
Eben Spencer of Itasca County will present on owl spotting techniques, local owl species and his mounted owls. Spencer has federal and state permits to possess mounted owls, and will bring four mounted owls to this program for viewing.
Oct. 22: “The Making of RISING.” Artist and teacher Tiffany Besonen will share her 10-minute experimental art film “RISING,” discuss her filmmaking process and answer questions.

Defensive Driving Course scheduled for Sept. 18
BEMIDJI — A Defensive Driving Course/ Refresher Course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, through Zoom.
The four-hour course is for drivers aged 55 and older who want to receive a discount on their insurance. The instructor for the classes will be retired Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Mike Flatley.
A recent change in the law regarding the Senior Driving Program says participants can now take the four-hour course for their initial course. The eight-hour beginner’s course is no longer a requirement, a release said.
Those who have already completed the beginner’s course can also take this course to continue receiving a discount on their
insurance.

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will host a pedicure foot care clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on two Tuesdays a month, starting Sept. 18, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW. The next dates are Oct. 2 and 23, Nov. 6 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 18.

Prosser will share her personal journey through cancer twice. Churches United of Bemidji to hold volunteer open house
BEMIDJI — The Churches United of Bemidji will host a volunteer open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Churches United offices, 414 Lincoln Ave. SE.
At the event, potential volunteers can see the offices and learn about the importance and impact of their service to the Bemidji community.
Volunteers will receive training, work in a safe environment and may work shifts as often as they like, from a few times a week to once a month, a release said.
“More than 2,600 guests were served in 2023 by providing financial and material support,” added the release.
“Churches United relies on volunteers from 28 Bemidjiarea churches to open its doors from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.”
The organization receives financial support from several churches. In 2023, it received grant funding from the United Way and donations from local businesses for a total revenue of $60,816.
Clergy and other leaders came together to create Churches United in 2002 as a more effective way to best serve people in need in the community, the release said. With support from Executive Director Wanda Yoemans, volunteers welcome guests, assess needs and provide appropriate financial and material assistance. Assistance can include vouchers for food, gas, bus transportation, and clothing, rental, utility and other assistance as well as items like diapers, quilts, personal care and other items.

BCHS to host Brown Bag History, ‘Saving Your Stuff’ programs
BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society will host two programs this week at the History Center, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW.
Emily Thabes, executive director of the Beltrami County Historical Society, will present a Brown Bag History program on the Federal Music Project at noon on Thursday, Sept. 19.
The Federal Music Project, which operated from 1935 to 1943 as part of the New Deal, was an ambitious initiative aimed at providing employment to musicians during the Great Depression while fostering cultural enrichment across the United States, a release said.
Thabes will delve into the purpose of this program, its significant impact on music during the Depression era and its enduring legacy. Participants will also listen to recordings and live performances of music from the period, offering a rich auditory experience that complements the historical narrative.
Attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch and beverage of their choice to enjoy during the event.
Megan Brakob Narvey, outreach conservator at the Minnesota Historical Society, will hold a workshop titled, “Saving Your Stuff: How to Care for Art, Heirlooms and Personal Collections” at noon on Friday, Sept. 20.
The event will begin with a comprehensive
presentation, giving attendees invaluable insights into the “10 agents of deterioration” and offering practical tips on how to preserve and protect their most valued possessions, the release said.
A question-and-answer period will follow.
“Whether you’re a collector, an artist, or someone with cherished family heirlooms, this event will help you learn the best practices for ensuring that your items stand the test of time,” added the release.
This event is organized by Minnesota’s Historic Northwest.

Parks and Rec offers Basic Life Support class
BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Basic Life Support class from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, at the BSU Gillett Wellness Center, 1801 Birch Lane NE.
This class is geared toward pre-hospital providers such as EMTs, paramedics, firefighters and in-facility hospital providers. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.

Important early use of an AED
• Effective ventilations using a barrier device

BEMIDJI — The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is now accepting applications from those interested in serving on its board of directors.
The NMF board is looking to elect new members this winter, with newly elected directors starting their four-year terms in

“The Foundation invests resources, facilitates collaboration and promotes philanthropy to make the region a better place to live and work,” the release said.
The NMF Board of Directors is made up of 12 adults who live within the 12-county region, which includes Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau Counties, and Red Lake and White Earth Nations.
