Women’s Hockey 2006-07 BEMIDJI STATE 2006-07 OUTLOOK
The 2005-06 season is one that the Bemidji State women’s hockey team will be looking to build on, finishing the season with a 11-23-2 overall record and a 1018-0 mark in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The 10-18-0 mark in the WCHA was good enough for sixth place. The ten wins was the most wins the Beavers have garnered in the WCHA in its seven year history. Along with the ten wins the Beavers beat the University of Minnesota for the first time in school history with a 2-1 victory over the Gophers on January 7, 2006.
Bemidji State will have a new look this season with the hiring of Steve Sertich to take over the Head Coaching position. Sertich is the fourth coach for Bemidji State since the program began in 1998. Along with sixteen letter winners there are nine newcomers joining a squad that retains 80% if its scoring (146/182) from a year ago. With two newcomers having played for the Minnesota Lightening U-19 team and one playing for the Minnesota Thoroughbreds there is reason to be optimistic about the up coming season. Bemidji State has six true freshman coming in and will be looking for those freshman to step in and contribute right away.
Forwards
BSU’s returns ten out of its fourteen forwards from a year ago; as they lose Aimee Collins, Carly Napier and Melissa Schaeffer to graduation the Beavers also lose Allison Johanson from a year ago. Bemidji State will add two forwards to a talented group of forward for next season. Bemidji State will have to improve its scoring output from a year ago. BSU netted seventy-two goals last season which was good for sixth in the conference. Improved scoring output will be necessary for BSU to improve in the conference this season. BSU returns its three leading scorers in Kelly Hart, Nikki Eckebrecht, and Helena Tageson. Hart lead the BSU scoring charge for the third straight season as she put up a career best with thirty points. Nikki Eckebrecht garnered twenty-three points on the season and lead the team in goals with thirteen and Helena Tageson produced twenty points during the 2005-06 season for the Beavers. After leading the team in scoring for the third straight season with 30 points (822) in 2005-06, Kelly Hart will be looked upon to lead the offensive charge for the Beavers. Hart was the only Beaver to score at least two points in seven games last season. Hart also had two multi-goal games and three multi-assists games during the 2005-06 campaign. Hart has seventeen multi-point games in her career along with four multi-goal games and eight multi-assists games.
Defensemen
The defense is also an area that needs some improvement from a year ago. Although, BSU improved by two goals from 2004-05 they still need to improve these statistics. The Beavers let in 119 goals in 2005-06, which amounted to 3.3 goals per game. The Beavers lose two of its defensemen from the 2005-06 season. The Beavers lost one of its top defensemen in Sarah Zuelke to graduation and defensemen Whitney Sears who played in eight games for the Beavers a year ago. Zuelke was the second leading scorer among defensemen from a year ago as she netted two goals and had eight helpers on the season good for ten points. With five defensemen returning from last years squad and adding three newcomers to the team should add a lot of competition for playing time this season. Sophomore Brooke Collins will be looked upon as a key ingredient to spark the play for the Beavers this season. Collins in her freshman season scored the most points among defensemen with sixteen points (2-14). She was the only freshman to play in all 36 games for the Beavers last season and was one of six players who played in all 36 games last season. Collins was a WCHA All-Rookie Team member. Junior Haley Balcom (1-7=8) was one of two defensemen to appear in all 36 games last season. Junior Nina Ziegenhals (o-4=4) will be expected to bring experience and leadership to the blue line in her senior season. Sophomore Wendy Bergh will also be expected to bring experience to the defense for the Beavers. Redshirt freshman Ashley Leopold will be looked upon to step in and be a solid contributor on the blue line for the Beavers. Mandy Bambrough will return to help out the defense after having to sit out during the 2005-06 season because of a back injury. Bemidji State welcomes three freshman defenders in Lexy Parenteau (Chisago Lakes, Minnesota), Jacqueline Robertson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), and Casey Irving (Okotoks, Alberta). Parenteau was a three-time all-conference selection at Chisago Lakes high school and has played for Wisconsin Wild AAA U-19 club team, Minnesota Elite AAA team, and the Minnesota Lightening U-19 team. Robertson has been an all-conference honorable mention selection twice at South St. Paul high school and was a part of two state AA championship teams. Irving is a team Alberta finalist and has participated in the Team Alberta Camp.
Nikki Eckebrecht finished second on the team in scoring for the Beavers last season with her 23 points and will be looked upon to be a leader on the ice this next season. Echebrecht is a more physical offensive threat for the beavers ending the season with thirteen goals and ten assists in 2005-06. She lead the team in penalty minutes with 80. She also had four power-play goals and one game winning goal during the 200506 season. Eckebrecht was second on the team in multi-point games with six, which put her up to a total of twelve multi-point games in her career. Helena Tageson was third on the team in scoring in 2005-06 netting eleven goals and adding nine helpers good for a twenty point season. Tageson led the team in power-play goals with six. Tageson had five multi-point games this season and she also had her first multi-goal game of her career during the 2005-06 campaign. Tageson garnered WCHA offensive player of the week once last season. Junior Jessica Pullar obtained WCHA offensive player of the week after her two goal performance in the Beavers 2-1 victory of the University of Minnesota on January 7th. Bemidji State welcomes two freshman forwards in Nicole Rawlings (Maplewood, Minn.) and Kailee Jaeger (Devils Lake, N.D.). Rawlings is the sister of current Bemidji State sophomore hockey player Monica Rawlings and is a three-time all-conference selection at Hill Murray high school along with participating for Walser U-19 and the Minnesota Lightening U-19 teams. Jaeger is a three-time all-state selection at Devils Lake high school and was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year (Miss Hockey) for the state of North Dakota during the 2005-06 season.
