BEMIDJI, Minn. — Travis Winter fired a shot through heavy traffic and past the Black Knight goaltender with 3:12 to go in the game to break a 1-1 deadlock and lift the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Army at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The win broke the seal on the Beavers’ 52nd season of hockey and helped BSU improve to 3-0 all-time versus the Black Knights. The Beavers found themselves down 1-0 before most of the 1,382 in attendance had time to get situated in their seats. The Black Knights took a failed BSU trip into the zone and beat the Beavers back up the ice. Owen Meyer placed the first shot of the 2007-08 season over the left shoulder of BSU senior goaltender Matt Climie just 32-seconds after the drop of the puck. BSU would return the favor at the 11:47 mark when Jake Bluhm buried a one-timer from newcomer Matt Francis to level the score. Army looked to have taken a 2-1 lead midway through the period on a shot off the stick of Luke Flicek, as Climie was taken out. But the referee quickly waved off the goal and after a brief discussion between officials and explanations to both benches, the goal was disallowed due to a Black Knight player being in the crease. The event was a shot in the arm for the Beaver attack as the team would pepper Josh Kassel with 12 shots in the period with Winter’s first point of the season finding its way into the net. Brandon Marino was credited with the first assist while freshman forward Matt Read earned his first collegiate point with an assist on the play. After the first-minute stunner caught everyone on their heels, Climie compose himself and turned away 21 shots, including nine to finish the first period, to collect his 32nd career win in net for the Beavers. The 2-1 victory served as the prefect start to the Beavers’ 52nd season of collegiate hockey. BSU improved to 38-12-2 in seasonopeners all time and is 4-2-1 to open a new season under head coach Tom Serratore. The 2007-08 meeting between BSU and Army was the first headto-head battle since the teams met to kick off the 1999-2000 season. The Beavers also won that contest, 5-2, garnering its first win at the NCAA Division I level. BSU would post a 3-0 shutout the following night to complete the series sweep in West Point.

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team got three third-period goals and goaltender Orlando Alamano turned away all 22 Army shots as the Beavers completed the two-game series sweep over the Black Knights with a 3-0 victory. Alamano and his corps of defenders turned in a superb performance. Aiding in the goaltender’s first collegiate shutout, the Beavers blocked another 10 Army shots and created havoc for the Black Knights all evening. Freshman Jamie Ruff netted his first goal wearing the Green and White, giving BSU a 1-0 lead over Army early in the third period. Chris McKelvie and fellow rookie Ian Lowe were each credited with assists on the play. The helper was also the first collegiate point for Lowe. Matt Pope and Blaine Jarvis each added empty-net goals during the final 25 seconds to secure the victory. During the first period, BSU out shot the Black Knights 12-3. BSU had multiple quality scoring chances during the period, but each time Jay Clark came up with the save. During the 12th minute, Riley Weselowski generated a turnover as the Black Knights attempted to skate the puck into the BSU zone. He hit Pope in stride, who had beaten the defense, who returned the pass only for Weselowski’s shot to be stopped by Clark. Later in the stanza, Brandon Marino used his speed to break away from the Black Knight defenders for a 1-on-1 with the Army goaltender. Clark again stymied the BSU opportunity as the teams went into the first intermission locked at 0-0. The second period was a 360-degree switch from the first 20 minutes. Army came out as the aggressor peppering Alamano with 13 shots against just three for BSU. But the BSU backstop would keep the Beavers in the game stopping all 13 second-period attempts to keep the score even at 0-0. The third period belonged to BSU. The Beavers fired 13 shots on goal during the final 20 minutes with Ruff’s lamplighter making the difference 4:11 into the period. Alamano, now 4-2-0 on his career and 1-0-0 in 2007-08, posted his first win since a Jan. 6th victory versus Wayne State (Mich). It was the first BSU shutout since Matt Climie posted 21 saves in a 1-0 win over Wayne State Dec. 1, 2006. Army’s Clark stopped 25 BSU shots falling to 0-1-0 on the year. The win extends the Beavers’ winning streak over Army to four games as the team is now 4-0 versus the Black Knights all-time.

BSU’s late comeback attempt came up short as the Warriors held off the rally to secure the one-goal victory. Merrimack built a 1-0 lead in the first period as John Goebel netted his first goal of the season for the Warriors at 16:01 of the period. Bemidji State’s Tyler Scofield was dismissed from the contest with just 17 seconds left in the first period for checking-from-behind. The penalty gave the Warriors nearly five minutes oln the man-advantage to begin the second period. In the second period the Warriors came out and pushed their lead to 2-0 on its first of two power-play goals on the night. Bemidji State cut the lead to 2-1 when Brandon Marino fired a wrist shot that trickled off the goaltender’s glove into the net for his first goal of the season. Bemidji State scored the game-tying goal just 56 seconds into the third period. Blaine Jarvis scored his second goal of the season with help from Matt Pope. The score did not stay tied for long as Merrimack once again took advantage of a Beaver penalty. BSU was called for too many men on the ice at 1:38 of the third period and the Warriors would turn that into a lead in just 38 seconds.. Francios Ouimet scored the eventual game-winner with help from Rob Ricci and Grant Farrell. Late in the third period the Beavers seemed to have scored a goal that would have tied the game up at 3-3, but a quick whistle by the referee ended play early. Despite out shooting the Warriors 36-11 on the night the Beavers pushed just two pucks past Merrimack goaltender Patrick Watson. Watson stopped 34 of 36 shots faced improving his record to 2-0 on the season. Bemidji State freshman goalie Matt Dalton recorded his first collegiate start in netstopping eight of 11 shots faced allowing all three Warrior goals. Merrimack and Bemidji State combined for 13 penalties for a total of 37 minutes. BSU garnered seven penalties for 25 minutes and Merrimack committed six minor penalties for 12 minutes. BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University hockey team fell behind 2-0 for the second consecutive night and was unable complete the comeback as the Beavers fell 2-1 to Merrimack College. The Warriors used a short-handed goal in the first period and a goal midway through the second to complete the sweep. Bemidji State out-shot Merrimack 6-4 in the first period but the Warriors held the advantage on the scoreboard at 1-0 going into the first intermission. In the second period, the Warriors applied as much pressure as they had all weekend generating 12 shots on goal. Just over the midway point of the frame, Justin Bonitatibus potted his first goal of the season to push the Warrior’s lead to 2-0. Bonitatibus picked up loose puck in front of the Beaver net and was able to fire a shot that beat the BSU goaltende. Matt Jones and Pat Kimball were awarded the helpers on the eventual game winning-goal. Bemidji State cut the lead to 2-1 before the period was over. Merrimack’s Grant Farrell was called for hooking at 16:53 of the third period to give the Beavers their fifth power-play of the game. BSU took advantage netting its first power-play goal of the season to bring the score within a one goal. Cody Bostock fired a shot on goal from the point that the goaltender kicked aside. Travis Winter picked up the loose puck and buried his second goal of the season. Bostock and Ryan Cramer assisted on the power-play goal. BSU applied plenty of pressure as the period wound down but the combination of the Warriors’ defense and solid goaltending by Andre Brathwaite allowed the MC to garner a weekend series sweep of the Beavers. The sweep marked the first time the Beavers have been swept at home under the tutelage of seveth-year head coach Tom Serratore. The last time BSU swept at home was on Nov. 10-11, 2000 when Miami (Ohio) took two stright from the Beavers at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Climie stopped 19 of 21 shots faced suffering his first lost of the season for the Beavers. Brathwaite stopped 28 of 29 shots in net for the Warriors seeing his record improve to 1-0 this season. With the loss the Beavers fall to 3-3 all-time versus the Warriors and 2-2 at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse versus Merrimack. The Warriors are currently on a three game winning streak versus the Beavers. The last four meetings between the two teams have been one goal games with the Warriors winning the last three games.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Despite a tremendous performance by Bemidji State University defensively, the team’s struggles to score continue as the Beavers out shot St. Cloud State University 40-29 in a 2-1 loss to the Huskies front end of a two-game non-conference set at the National Hockey Cente. The Beavers blocked 22 SCSU shots and Orlando Alamano saved 27 of 29 shots faced including a pair of superb SCSU shorthanded scoring opportunities. But, despite multiple chances on the St. Cloud State doorstep, the Beavers managed only one goal as the SCSU goaltender, Jase Wesloski, made 39 saves to single-handedly keep SCSU in the game and earn a victory. The Beavers looked to have taken a lead during the 15th minute of the period when Matt Pope scored a one-timer in front of the net. But further review of the goal showed that Pope kicked the puck into the net and the goal was disallowed. The Huskies also had their chances in the first. SCSU had four quality scoring opportunities, the best of which came a man short. The SCSU defense came up with the puck and Nate Dey took a long pass up the ice off the boards and looked to have Alamano on his back, but goalie swept the puck off the line to stop the short-handed opportunity and keep the Huskies out of the scoring column. Garret Roe broke the 0-0 deadlock with a shot from the top of the left circle with just over nine minutes to play in the second. Tyler Scofield evened the score at 1-1 seven minutes later when he stepped between a pair of SCSU defenders to steal a pass and fliped the puck over the Huskies’ goaltender for an unassisted goal. Entering the second intermission, the game seemed to be in the hands of the Beavers despite the 1-1 score. BSU was out shooting SCSU at a two-to-one clip (32-16) and had 17 quality scoring chances to the Huskies nine. But the Huskies would come out of the break and change their own fortunes. SCSU shrunk the shot differential by out shooting the Beavers 12-3 eventually leading to the game-winning goal. Michael Olson took a pass from Dey and Ryan Lasch and fired and a wrist shot between the pads of Alamano to put the Huskies ahead for good. With 1:26 left on the clock, BSU head coach Tom Serratore called a time out to rally his team and attempt to formulate a strategy to take the Huskies to overtime, but in the end the Beavers came up short dropping their third straight game by a single goal, 2-1.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Special teams play and stellar goaltending made the difference carrying the St. Cloud State men’s ice hockey team to victory over Bemidji State at National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies totaled four power-play goals--with three coming in the first period--and a short-handed tally in the second while freshman goaltender Dan Dunn stopped 35 BSU shots for his first win of his career. A Cody Bostock power-play marker was all that BSU could manage despite out shooting thier oppoent for the fourth straight game (36-30). SCSU got the scoring started 30-seconds into its first power-play opportunity of the night. Garrett Roe and Garrett Raboin found Ryan Lasch for a goal during the eight minute. The talley was just a sign of things to come as the Huskies would capitalize on four of eight power-play chances and Roe would earn the first star of the game by netting two goals and an assist. Less than 30-seoncds later, Matt Francis was whistled for one of BSU’s nine penalties and it would take SCSU’s Roe just 79-seconds to find the net with the eventual game-winner. Bostock added a power-play goal, at the 11:51 mark as Matt Read and Tyler Scofield found the open defender who fired a laser past Dunn to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. The Huskies took a 4-1 lead in the locker rooms for the first intermission after Nate Dey notched SCSU’s only even-strength scoring play of the night. Bemidji State made a change in net for the second period sending senior goalie Matt Climie to the crease in relief of the freshman Matt Dalton. Climie made 10 saves in the stanza and helped to successfully kill a pair of SCSU power-play chances, but the Huskies would go up 5-1 before the frame expired. SCSU added another power-play marker during the sixth minute of the third period to push the score to the final 6-1. Dalton made six saves during his stint but allowed four goals to slide to 0-2-0 on the season. In relief, Climie managed 18 saves with two goals allowed playing the game’s final 40 minutes. The loss is the 13th straight to St. Cloud State and the eighth in as many tries for BSU at the National Hockey Center. SCSU improves to 35-42-3 in the all-time series dating back to the 1948 season.

BEMIDJI, Minn. — No. 18 Niagara University extended its unbeaten streak versus Bemidji State University to five games using a third-period, short-handed goal to hold off the Beavers and gain a 3-2 victory in the College Hockey America opener for both teams. After playing to a 1-1 tie to finish the second period, the Purple Eagles posted a pair of goals during the first 10 minutes of the final stanza to make the difference in the contest and claim two points in a race to defend their CHA championship. The Beavers came out of the gates strong to dominate the first period and held a 12-4 advantage on shots on goal but failed to score despite creating several quality scoring opportunities. Between the strong BSU offensive attack and the play of its defenders, BSU’s goaltender Orlando Alamano didn’t face a shot on net during the first 12:21 of play. Entering period two locked in a scoreless tie, it was the Beavers that first lit the scoreboard when Blaine Jarvis scored his team-leading third goal of the season, dragging the puck across the slot and sliding it just under the open glove hand of the Niagara goaltender. Sophomore Joey Moggach and second-year defender Chris Peluso each recorded their first assists of the season to help put BSU up 1-0. But before the time would expire on the period, Niagara’s Egor Mironov would net the equalizer with help from Vince Rocco and Bryan Hacyk to send the teams to the locker rooms with the score knotted at 1-1. Niagara broke the tie just 5:26 seconds into the final stanza when Trevor Foster came out of traffic in the corner to feed Ryan Annesley on top of the right face off circle for a slap shot that beat Alamano. During the tenth minute NU would build a two-goal lead, 3-1, short a man. With 8:16 on the clock, Tylor Simpson was whistled for tripping a BSU player in front of the Niagara net to give the Beavers their third power-play chance of the evening. One-minute, 28-seconds into the BSU man advantage, Rocco would come up with the puck and feed Haczyk to finish the 2-on-1 short-handed play. Sophomore John Vadnais reeled NU to withing a goal, 3-2, with 9:10 to play but that is as close as the Beavers would get. Alamano made 15 saves in the loss. Niagara’s Pagliero finished with 34 saves in the Purple Eagle win.

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team got multiple-point efforts from three players while senior goaltender Matt Climie stopped 31 shots en route to his eighth career shutout as the Beavers salvaged a series split with No. 18 Niagara, 3-0, at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The victory, BSU’s first since Oct. 13th, ended the Beavers’ longest losing skid since they lost five straight in the final month of the 2002-03 campaign, snapped a five-game winless streak versus the Purple Eagles dating back to Oct. 27th of last season and a put to rest a strand of three straight losses at the Glas. In a first period of play dominated by the Beavers, senior center Matt Pope got the Beavers on the board during the 11th minute. Blaine Jarvis drug the puck into the zone and centered it to the slot. Joey Moggach took a swipe at the puck sliding it across the front of the net to Pope, who was on the left door step. Pope put a shot on goal that was blocked by the Niagara goaltender, but the rebound bounced right back to the senior who found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner and the first of his two goals on the night. BSU skated into the first intermission up 1-0 having out shot the visiting Purple Eagles 15-8 during the first 20 minutes. In a cleanly played second stanza during which the penalty box doors were never opened, the Beavers added to their lead 6:49 in when Jarvis scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Climie turned away all 12 NU shots to give the Beavers a 2-0 cushion heading into the final period. Bemidji State was out shot 11-5 in the third, but the Beavers made good on one of those shots as Pope recorded his second career multi-goal game beating the NU goaltender with just under 12 minutes to play. Senior forward Jake Bluhm and Moggach were credited with assists on the play. Moggach finished the night having a hand in each of the Beavers’ three goals marking a new career-high for the sophomore. In the shut out, Climie turned away 12 NU shots in the first, 11 during the second and five in the final 20 minutes of play. He improved to 2-1-0 on the season working 59:51 between the pipes and holding he Purple Eagles without a goal for the first time since Robert Morris blanked NU January 29, 2005. In addition to Climie’s’ solid defensive effort, the Beavers blocked 20 Niagara shot attempts and the BSU penalty kill held the NU in the check for the second consecutive night stymieing all three opportunities.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Bemidji State University goaltender Matt Climie stopped 36 University of Alabama-Huntsville shots en rout to his second consecutive and ninth career shutout at the Von Braun Arena in Huntsville Alabama. The senior’s flawless performance gave the Beavers their second win in as many contests in a rare, Friday evening, College Hockey America victory at Alabama-Huntsville. Climie turned away 15 shots during the first 20 minutes, 11 in the second and 10 in the third in a 60-minute blanking of the Chargers. Climie joined BSU greats Blaine Comstock (1967-71) and Jim Scanlan (1978-82), who sit atop the BSU all-time shutouts list with nine goose eggs apiece. It took some time for the Beavers to shake their travel legs as UAH opened the game with more spark than BSU. The Chargers out shot Bemidji State 15-7 during the first 20 minutes but the BSU goaltender would get the Beavers into the first intermission with the score tied 0-0. Travis Winter would get BSU on the board just 2:36 into the second stanza when he got help from Brandon Marino and Matt Read to beat the UAH goalie for the first BSU power-play marker in three games and just the third tally on the man advantage this season. The goal would stand as the game-winner. Entering the third period with a one-goal advantage, Matt Francis added his first goal as a Beaver for good measure during the fourth minute of the third period. Captains David Deterding and Winter would be credited with assist on the play. Winter’s 1-1=2 points in the game stands as the 10th multi-point contest of his career. The Beavers fired 24 shots on goal during the second period, just four shots shy of a BSU school mark set versus Lake Forest in 1994, to assist the team in pulling ahead of the Chargers in the shots on goal category. BSU has not been out shot in a single game this season. Bemidji State finished the contest 1-for-3 on the power-play while it held UAH scoreless on six power-play opportunities--marking the third consecutive game in which BSU has kept is opposing powerplays silent. The Beavers improve to 20-26-2 all-time versus UAH and are now 6-17-1 when facing the Charges on their home ice. BSU has won eight of its last 10 meetings with Alabama-Huntsville.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - On a night in which special teams were major contributors for both teams, it was an even-strength goal by sophomore Chris McKelvie late in the third period that would get the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to overtime and out of Huntsville, Alabama with three points after a 3-0 victory Friday and a 3-3 tie in the first series of the season versus University of Alabama-Huntsville. Of the six goals that were recorded in the contest, three came on the power-play, one was a short-handed and two came with the teams playing five-on-five hockey. Special teams scoring should have seemed a bit foreign to the Beavers as they went into the game ridding a streak of more than 134 minutes without allowing a power-play goal and Chris Peluso netted the first BSU goal on the man advantage, and the first of his career, on a bullet through traffic with 6:26 gone in the first period. Eight minutes and six seconds later, the Chargers evened the score, at 1-1, just 21-seconds into a 5-on-3 situation. UAH would add another power-play tally before Travis Winter could escape from the box to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. UAH gave the Beavers their second power-play opportunity of the game at the 5:01 mark when Tyler Hilbert was be whistled for interference. Winter netted his fourth goal of the season before Hilbert could return to play to even the score, 2-2. On the scoring play, UAH’s Brandon Roshko was sent to the box for hooking to put BSU up a man again, but it was the Chargers’ special teams that would come up big as Matt Sweazey posted his second goal of the game finding Matt Climie’s five-hole. Before time would run out on the second stanza, McKelvie would knot the score at 3-3. The sophomore pushed a rebound past the UAH goalie. A scoreless third period would force the teams to decide the game in extra time marking the first overtime contest of the season for either team. Both BSU and UAH would have one power-play chance in the extra session and Bemidji State managed to out shoot the Chargers 2-0, but neither team would find the back of the net settling for the 3-3 tie.

DETROIT - Bemidji State University rookie Matt Read helped generate the Beaver’s first period game-winning goal and scored his first collegiate marker during the final 20 minutes as the Beaver men’s hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over Wayne State University at the Michigan State Fairground Coliseum. Matt Pope got the Beavers on the board just 93 seconds into the contest as BSU made good on its first power-play opportunity. Graham McManamin and Joey Moggach were credited with assists on the play. The Beavers’ fifth power-play goal of 2007-08 moved Pope into a tie with Travis Winter and Blaine Jarvis for the team lead with four while recording his sixth assist on the play, Moggach now leads the team and the league in assist scoring. The Warriors evened the score during the 15th minute. Tyler Ruel netted the first goal of his career on a play involving Jordan Inglis and Matt Krug. Read assisted the Beavers to move back into the lead in the final minutes of the first stanza. He would find the puck on the red line and skate it into the zone finding Winter who got the puck to the stick if Cody Bostock for a one-timer in the slot. Bostock’s first goal of the season would stand as the game winner as the defender and his teammates would hold the Warriors without a goal and to just 10 shots on goal during the final two periods of play. After a scoreless second period, Read would take out an insurance policy on the BSU win picking off a misplayed puck, skating it into the zone and making good on a one-on-one situation with the goaltender. Matt Climie made 18 saves in 60 minutes of play allowing just the first period tally to move to 4-1-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in league play (3-0-1). On the other end of the ice, the WSU goalie Kyle Funkenhauser fell to 1-4-1 overall turning away 20 shots, including 10 during the first period, and allowing three goals in 58:40 between the pipes. The Beavers were 1-for-4 on the power play. After struggling to generate scoring on the man advantage, the Beavers have now netted a power-play goal in each of their last three games going 3-for-11 during those contest (.273). Meanwhile, the BSU penalty kill continued to roll. Shutting the Warriors out on six opportunities.

DETROIT - The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team saw its four-game College Hockey America unbeaten streak come to an end as Wayne State University handed the Beavers a 5-2 loss at the Michigan State Fairground Coliseum. Bemidji State struck first, but three Warrior goals during a 12:12 stretch to end the first period and begin the second, would put the Beavers in a hole from which they were not able to dig their way out. Although BSU cut the deficit to a goal, 3-2, with 4:36 to play in the second stanza, the Warriors responded with their second power-play goal of the night to regain their two-goal cushion and preserve the win. WSU added an empty-net goal in the game’s final minute to take the game, 5-2, and garner a series split. BSU freshman Matt Read scored his second goal in as many nights to get the Beavers on the board just 3:44 into the contest. The goal on the man advantage extended BSU current special teams scoring streak to four games. The Beavers were 5-for-15 (.333) during that span. Bemidji State would see WSU’s Jon Grabarek even the score less than seven minutes later (10:27) on the Warriors’ first chance up a man. He gave WSU its first lead in the series during the 17th minute propelling the Warriors to the first intermission clinging to a 2-1 lead. As the second stanza got underway, Matt Krug netted his first tally of the campaign to put the hosts up 3-1. Joey Moggach helped BSU close in on the Warriors netting his first goal of 2007-08 with a one-timer from Tyler Scofield and Matt Pope. The goal helped Moggach match Read and Pope for BSU’s scoring lead with seven points (1-6=7). The goal came at the 15:36 mark of the second period as the Beavers were in the midst of their second power play of the evening. Less than three minutes later (18:07), WSU’s Jared Katz dashed Bemidji State’s comeback effort netting an even-strength goal. BSU’s goaltender Matt Climie stopped 16 WSU shots and allowed four goals in 57:33 between the pipes. The senior saw his own fourgame unbeaten streak come to an end falling to 4-2-1 on the season. With the Wayne State men’s hockey program dissolving at the 2007-08 season, the affair closed the books on the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum for the Beavers.

NIAGARA, N.Y - Although it had been nearly eight months since Niagara University had been defeated on their home ice, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team left little doubt, decisively snapping the streak with a 5-1 victory in College Hockey America play. Beaver special teams shown brightly as BSU stopped Niagara’s home unbeaten streak at 22 games--the fifth longest streak in NCAA Division men’s hockey history. The specialty unit extended its streak of contests with a power-play goal to five while on the penalty kill, the Beavers accounted for a short-handed goal and snuffed out three of NU’s four chances on the man advantage. BSU jumped out to an early lead taking advantage of its first two chances on the man advantage. Just 91 seconds into the game, Tyler Scofield netted the first of his game-high two goals. Less than two minutes later (3:31), Cody Bostock gave the Beavers a two-goal cushion, netting his third goal of the season on the power-play tally. The score would remain 2-0 through the first intermission and well into the second period, but when BSU captain David Deterding was whistled for hooking a the 15:01 mark, it set the Purple Eagles up for their third power-play of the contest. But it was BSU that capitalized on the opportunity as Matt Pope potted the Beavers’ first short-handed goal of the season. Bostock was sent to the penalty box for interference with with 4:27 on the clock supplying the Purple Eagles with a three-on-five advantage for 1:26 and NU would find the net. Rocco Vince scored the goal with help from Chris Moran and Matt Caruana to propel the hosts into the second intermission trailing BSU 3-1. The Beavers squashed any momentum NU had going into the break coming out in the third to regain their three-goal advantage just 1:04 into the stanza. Jarvis scored the goal on a pass from Joey Moggach. Scofield added another goal during the 16th minute to seal the victory for BSU. Ian Lowe and John Vadnais assisted on the play. Matt Climie was again superb between the pipes for BSU. The senior turned away 30 of 31 NU shots in 59:55 on the ice. He improved to 5-2-1 on the season with the win and is now 7-1-2 in 11 starts versus the Purple Eagles. As with every other game this season, win or lose, the Beavers out shot their opponent, 34-31. BSU now holds a 410-315 (+95) advantage in shots through 13 games.

NIAGARA, N.Y - The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team earned a 2-2 tie with College Hockey America foe No. 17/19 Niagara University at Dwyer Arena in Niagara, N.Y. in a well-played, pure hockey game. The Beavers rode the strength of their penalty kill and a hot goaltender through regulation and overtime to earn the tie and skated out of Niagara with three crucial points in the league standings. The Beavers scored first and held the lead for 52:12 minutes, but when Matt Caruana fired the puck past Matt Climie to knot the game at 2-2, Bemidji State hunkered down and managed to salvage the tie. Matt Read got the Beavers on the board during the seventh minute of play netting his third goal of the season with BSU down a man. The unassisted goal marked the second consecutive night BSU had recorded a short-handed goal after playing the first 12 games of the season without one. Riley Weselowski put BSU up 2-0 in the final seconds of the first period when he converted a one-timer from the slot. The goal was the first of the season for Weselowski putting an end to a personal 17game scoreless streak for the defenseman. With four points on the weekend, including a Cody Bostock game-winner in the opening game of the series, the BSU defense has accounted for 6-10=16 points on the season extending its streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 11 games. Niagara would come back in the second out shooting the Beavers 13 to 10 with one of those shots sneaking past Climie to cut the NU deficit to one, 2-1. BSU would hold off the aggressive NU attack for the remainder of the second, stymieing three Purple Eagle power-play opportunities to get to the second intermission clinging to a 2-1 lead. That advantage would hold up until Caruana connected with the back of the net during the 19th minute of the third period. BSU was out shot in the five-minute overtime period, 4-1, but the teams failed to score settling for a tie. Climie gave up a goal during the second period and the game-tying goal with 1:26 remaining in regulation, but turned away 23 Niagara shots in 65:00 minutes of play. Bemidji State improved to 13-17-8 versus Niagara since the series began in 1999.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Two goals from Tyler Scofield and a strong defensive effort powered the Beavers to a 4-1 College Hockey America victory over long-time rival Alabama-Huntsville. Beaver defenders blocked eight shots in the contests and the squad never really let the UAH get comfortable in the zone. After netting a goal 1:44 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1, UAH recorded just four shots on goal during the remaining 38:16. In all UAH recorded eight shots on goal. The total equals a school mark for fewest shots allowed in a contest matching a mark set Jan. 14, 2005 versus Robert Morris University. A lethargic first period of hockey that saw just nine total shots on goal and play whistled dead for three penalties less than 45 seconds into the game, was capped with a BSU power-play marker by Blaine Jarvis at the 17:31 mark. With less than ten seconds to go on the Beavers’ second power play of the game, Jarvis came from behind the net to stuff his team-leading sixth goal of the season past the UAH goaltender. The Chargers evened the score 1:44 into the second period on a Kevin Morrison even-strength goal. But the tempo of the game would change as the third period got underway. The Beavers claimed the ice as their own and dominated the final stanza out shooting UAH 15-2 and netting a trio of goals. Scofield got things started 4:26 in tallying his fourth goal of the season to extend his scoring streak to four games. Graham McManamin was credited with his third assist of the season when dug the puck out of the corner and fed Travis Winter for the eventual game-winner. At the 7:48 mark of the period, Winter and McManamin would again team up to find Matt Read who converted a tough angle into his fourth marker of the season. The goal extended his lead in the CHA rookie scoring race to five points and solidified himself as the top scorer in all of league play increasing his season totals in CHA play to 4-4=8 points in the 19th minute of the third when he feed Scofield for the Beavers forth goal of the night. The junior also continued his own trend of playing well versus the Chargers. In 11 career games versus UAH, Scofield now has 7-6-=13 points--that is nearly one-quarter (.240) of his career points accounted for in just 11 games. BSU goaltender Matt Climie was called upon to face just eight shots in the contest allowing only the UAH second period goal. He equalled a career-low seven saves in the decision matching a Jan. 14, 2005 win over Robert Morris.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University goaltender Matt Climie may have faced just 12 shots, but a shutout is a shutout and Climie’s 12 saves helped the Beavers garner a 2-0 victory over University of Alabama-Huntsville to compete their first College Hockey America series sweep of the season. The blanking of the UAH also helped the senior solidify himself among some of the greatest to man the nets at Bemidji State as he surpassed both Jim Scanlan (1978-82) and Blane Comstock (1967-71) to sit alone atop the BSU career shutouts list with 10. In a defensive battle with the always physical Chargers, BSU prevailed riding the strength of its goaltending and special teams units. BSU not only eliminated seven Charger power-play opportunities, the team also took advantage of its own chances up a man netting a power-play goal midway through the second period that would stand as the game-winner. The selfless Beaver skaters did their share to keep UAH off the scoreboard. The Beavers sacrificed their bodies to block 13 shot attempts and killed off all seven of the Chargers’ power-play opportunities, including a brief 3-of-5, holding UAH to just three shots on the man advantage. The 0-for-7 put up by the BSU penalty kill unit extends its streak to 10 periods since it last allowed a power-play marker. Climie stretched his unbeaten streak four games with the victory recording 12 saves in 59:54 of work. Now 3-0-1 over his last four starts, Climie improved to 7-2-2 on the year and is 6-1-2 with a 1.31 goalsagainst average and .942 save percentage against CHA foes. Junior Travis Winter got BSU broke the 0-0 deadlock in the seocnd period pounding the shot home to extend his streak ofconsecutive games with a point to four games. Later in the second period, Matt Francis, who assisted on the Winter goal, was again in the mix of things when he was hauled down in the act of shooting on a break away. The junior made his best attempt at the rare penalty shot, but was unable to beat the Charger netminder. UAH would pull its goaltender during the final minute in an attempt to send the game to overtime, but Chris McKelvie took out an insurance policy on the win adding an empty-net goal with 46 seconds on the clock to put the Beavers ahead 2-0. The victory helps the Beavers to close the UAH advantage in the all-time series to 26-22-3 while the Beavers have dominated the series as of late posting a 10-1-2 record versus the Chargers since Mar. 3, 2006.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Down 4-1 to Minnesota State University, Mankato after two periods of play, the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team scored a pair of goals during the first 10 minutes of the third period, but was unable to match the Mavericks before time ran out dropping the non-conference match up 4-3 at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The Beavers came out of the second intermission a different team dominating the final 20 minutes of play, but four early goals by MSU would prove to be too great a deficit for the Beavers. Mike Berge opened the scoring for MSU 4:46 in, taking the puck off the stick of a BSU defender just outside the crease and beating Matt Climie for an unassisted goal. The Mavericks built a 2-0 lead during the 11th minute when Joel Hanson shoveled the puck across the crease and onto the stick of Trevor Bruess forr the goal. It looked as though momentum was swinging in BSU direction as the second period got underway. Just 1:23 into the stanza, Tyler Scofield Scofield netted his sixth marker of 2007-08 flicking the puck over the shoulder of the MSU goaltender Mike Zacharias. But the Mavericks faught back tallying two even-strength goals in just 39 seconds to extend their lead to 4-1, silence the BSU crowd and end Climie’s night. Freshman goaltender Matt Dalton came off the bench for his third appearance of the season. The rookie made seven saves during the final 35:45 and kept the Beavers within striking distance by holding the Mavericks scoreless. The Beavers owned the third period. The team beat the visitors to the puck and had plenty of opportunities, out shooting MSU 12-4 during the final 20 minutes. Read reeled the Mavericks to within two goals, 4-2, at the 4:11 mark. Just over six minutes later Matt Pope one-timed his sixth goal of the season. The Beavers battled the rest of the period with an obvious spark but BSU would fail to capitalize falling for the first time since a 5-2 loss at Wayne State University, Nov. 17th.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Minnesota State University, Mankato netted a thirdperiod power-play goal to earn a 1-0 victory over the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team and complete the non-conference series sweep at the John Glas Fieldhouse. the MSU netminder Mike Zacharias was stellar in net setting aside all 22 of BSU shot attempts to earn his third shutout of the season. The teams used the first period to feel each other out. A total of 18 shots, 11 for BSU and seven for the Mavericks, were fired on net, with the Bemidji State defensive unit blocking nine shots. The Mavericks had the best scoring opportunity during the first stanza when Zach Harrison picked up a BSU turnover and skated into the zone with nothing other than Orlando Alamano between him and the net. Alamano met Harrison at the top of the crease, made the save and pushed the puck off to the left side of the net for one of his 22 saves in the contest. The second period was more of the same, but it was BSU this time that had the best opportunity to light the scoreboard. With 7:50 to go the period, the Beavers took a 3-on-2 into the Maverick zone. Matt Pope snapped a shot off the leg of the MSU goaltender. Joey Moggach cleaned up the rebound and neatly placed into the back of the net from just outside the right pipe. But while the celebration ensued, the officials gathered and the goal was disallowed citing Moggach for a kick in. The teams entered the third period locked at 0-0, but Geoff Irwin recorded the difference-maker with 7:27 on the clock. The power-play marker snapped a 15-period streak during which the BSU penalty kill unit has held opponents scoreless on the man advantage. Since the string began, the Beavers successfully squashed 19 consecutive power-play chances. One goal was all the Mavericks would need, thanks to Zacharias who played his second consecutive solid game in the net for MSU. The shutout of Bemidji State is the first since a 4-0 loss to University of Wisconsin, March 25, 2006 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal game--the third longest streak of the sort at the school, spanning 50 games. With the victory, Minnesota State not only sweeps BSU at home for just the second time since the beginning of the 2001-02 campaign, it also closed the gap in an all-time series to 44-31-13.

DULUTH, Minn. - Two third period goals made the difference as the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team dropped the first half of a non-conference home-and-home series with the University of Minnesota Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, 5-3. Despite scoring first, netting a pair of power-play goals and keeping pace with the Bulldogs through two periods of play, the team ran out of gas down the stretch and came up short for the first time in five meetings. Bemidji State capitalized on a five-minute major penalty to UMD’s Trent Palm netting the game’s first goal at the 13:17-minute mark. Despite failing to score on a 55-second, 5-on-3 opportunity, senior forward Blaine Jarvis broke the 0-0 tie on a pass from Graham McManamin and Matt Pope. The Bulldogs responded with a power-play goal of their own before the teams would skate off for the first intermission. Just 1:17 into the second period, Travis Gawryletz was whistled for a penalty and the Beavers again took advantage of the extra player. McManamin netted the first goal of his collegiate career, 42-seconds into the power-play. The Bulldogs again evened the score in the sixth minute of play. Justin Fontaine recorded the first goal of his career on assists from Andrew Carroll and Sharpe. The marker was followed by a go-ahead goal by Cody Danberg just 65-seconds later (6:26). A barrage of BSU shots resulted in the Beavers’ third goal of the night. After two rebounds, junior Matt Francis slipped the puck behind Alex Stalock from just outside the left post for his second goal of the season. Ian Lowe was credited with an assist along with Emil Billberg who recorded his first collegiate point on the play. Six minutes into the third stanza, UMD’s Jordan Fulton checked the Beavers off the puck and Michael Gergen picked up the loose puck and fired it over the left shoulder of Matt Climie to put UMD up for good. With 1:37 to go, the Bulldogs secured the win when Nick Kemp took a pas from Gergen and Fulton and beat the BSU goaltender giving the hosts a two-goal lead and the 5-3 victory

BEMIDJI, Minn. - A Rock-solid defensive effort and a pair of collegiate hockey first led to a Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey 2-0 victory over non-conference foe University of Minnesota Duluth at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Beavers used a pair of third period goals and the first career win and shutout by freshman goaltender Matt Dalton to salvage a split in the home-and-home series and retain ownership right to the “Blue Ox” traveling trophy for the third consecutive season. Each team had a pair of power-play opportunities in the game’s first 20 minutes with UMD possessing a four shots to two advantage up a man and nine to seven in shots on goal during the period but each team would come up dry. The Beavers spent over seven minutes of the second stanza on the penalty kill as the team was whistled for four penalties. Typical of the night and the defense the team was playing previous to the three-week lay off, BSU successfully killed each of the four Bulldog power-plays including an brief 5-on-3. The teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 through two periods, but as the third period got underway, momentum began to turn in BSU’s favor. Blaine Jarvis netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 2:47 into the final frame to give the Bemidji State the first lead of the night, 1-0. Brandon Marino won a battle in the corner and shoveled the puck behind the net to senior centerman, Matt Pope Pope fed Jarvis who was streaking down the slot and the senior sealed the deal flipping the puck over the right shoulder of the UMD goaltender. The goal would stand as the game winner, Jarvis’s first of the season. Next it was Dalton who helped continue the momentum flow stymieing a Jordan Fulton one-on-one shot attempt with 9:04 to play to preserve the BSU one-goal lead. Less than a minute later, Matt Francis took a rebound off the stick of Dalton and moved play in the other direction. He found Tyler Lehrke who fired a nifty pass across the ice to Emil Billberg. Billberg buried the puck in the back of the net past the beaten Bulldog goaltender. The goal was the first of Billberg’s career and marked his second point in as many nights. In just the third appearance of his career and second start this season, Dalton turned away a total of 25 shots in the contest to earn his first collegiate win and to log the inaugural shutout of his career.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Two goals from junior defenseman Cody Bostock and a 25-save, shutout for Matt Climie powered the first-place Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 4-0 College Hockey America victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. Climie turned away six shots in each of the first and second periods and 11 in the third to blank the Chargers for the third time this season, the fourth time in his career and stretch his school-record career shutouts mark to 11. The victory also moves him into a tie with Grady Hunt (20002004) for BSU’s Division I era goaltending wins mark as he improved to 39-26-10. Bemidji State was first to light the lamp when Bostock corralled a loose puck at the top of the left circle and fired his fourth goal of the season threw the five hole of Blake MacNicol with 8:14 gone in the first. The goal, assisted by Matt Read and Travis Winter stood as the game winner as Climie would take care of the rest. Tyler Lehrke was the beneficiary of being the right place at the right time to put the Beavers up 2-0 just 2:13 into the second. Lehrke came up with a rebound off of MacNicol from a Matt Francis shot, and rolled it over the shoulder of the Charger goalie for his first tally of 2007-08. The goal snapped a streak of 31 games without a goal for the sophomore. With 6:31 gone in the second, Bostock would add his second goal of the night to make good on the Beavers’ second of three power-play opportunity on the night, just nine seconds before it expired. The Beavers would skate to the locker room for the second intermission grasping a 3-0 lead. Despite getting out shot 11-4 in the final period, sophomore forward Chris McKelvie added an insurance goal during the seventh minute pushing the score to 4-0. BSU special teams play was again solid as its penalty kill squashed all four of the Chargers power-play opportunities while the power-play was 1-for-3. Earning his first victory since a 2-0 shutout of the same UAH squad Dec. 8, Climie improved to 8-4-2 this season with a 6-1-2 mark in league play. MacNicol matched BSU’s goaltender’s 23 saves but was tagged with the loss allowing four goals. The win marked BSU’s 11th over the Chargers in the last 14 meetings (11-1-2) while the Beavers reeled UAH to 26-24-4 in the all-time series.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Junior Tyler Scofield and freshman Matt Read each netted three points aiding the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 7-1 College Hockey America victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville in the Chargers own Von Braun Center. The victory helped BSU complete the series sweep over UAH marking the first time Beavers have registered a road sweep over the Chargers since the teams made the jump to the major college hockey in 1999-2000. Ten BSU players tallied at least a point in the victory with seven finding the score sheet in the four-goal, third-period explosion to break the game open. Bemidji State built a 2-0 lead before the first frame came to an end scoring a pair of goals during the final 2:30. Scofield put the Beavers on the board when he netted a 5-on-3 goal with 17:45 on the clock. Matt Francis corralled his second point of the weekend with just 40 seconds left in the stanza taking an odd-angle shot from the goal line extended that found its way into the net. The goal, assisted on by Riley Weselowski, stood as the game-winner. It was the first of the season for Francis. The Beavers got caught on their heels as the second frame got underway. Matt Sweazy took scored to cut the BSU lead to 2-1 just 55 seconds after the drop of the puck. The goal snapped Matt Climie’s shutout streak versus the Chargers this season at 140:55. Matt Pope stretched the Beavers’ lead to two goals before time expired in the second netting his seventh goal of the season with help from Blaine Jarvis. In one of the strangest moments of the BSU 2007-08 season, the Beavers and Chargers were sent to the locker rooms for the second intermission with 52 seconds remaining on the clock. The teams took the early break due to a segment of the boards and glass that needed to be repaired. The Beavers turned the intensity up a notch in the final 20:52 lighting the lamp four times to extend their lead to six goals, 7-1. Ian Lowe capped the scoring for the night, recording his first collegiate goal, the Beavers’ second 5-on-3 goal of the game, with 18:47 gone in the third. Weselowski and Bostock were credited with helpers on the play. The Bemidji State penalty-kill held the Chargers scoreless on seven powerplay opportunities whle the BSU power-play posted its first three-goal game of the season going 3-for-7. The performances aided the Beavers units to improve to 56.8 percent efficiency to rank first in all of NCAA Division I hockey.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Bemidji State University sophomore forward Chris McKelvie recorded the first pure hat trick at BSU in more than 50 years, but it was not enough as No. 3 Colorado College erased a 4-2 deficit with a trio of third-period goals to escape with a 5-4 victory. The loss may have come to one of the elite teams in college hockey, but the Beavers didn’t make the trip to Colorado to concede wins and see how they measured up to the nationally-ranked. They made the trip with the intention of gaining wins. The last time the Beavers faced the Tigers was just a year ago. BSU split with the then-ranked No. 8 Tigers. However, there was a bright spot in the game for the Beavers. Heading into the second period, the Beavers trailed 2-1, but 5:31 into the stanza, McKelvie would net his fourth goal of the season to kick-start the three-goal outing. He would add two more before the 19:19 mark of the second to record the fastest pure hat trick in BSU hockey history since Rich Budge scored three goals in a span of 11:25 Jan. 30, 1966. From the opening drop, BSU showed it wasn’t backing down from CC. In fact, the Beavers set the tone early. Aided by a pair of early CC penalties, the Beavers held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal through the first 10 minutes of play. Emil Billberg that got the Beavers on the board netting an even-strength marker, with 10:32 gone in the period. Tyler Lehrke and Matt Francis were credited with assists on the play. The helper extended Francis’s scoring streak to five games. The Tigers bounced back quickly as Andreas Vlassopoulos found the back of the net with 6:45 on the clock. CC’s leading scorer, Chad Rau, put the Tigers in front for the first time with 1:58 to go in the period sliding his 18th goal of the season past BSU freshman goaltender Matt Dalton. With 5:31 gone in the second, Cody Bostock managed to direct the puck toward the net and McKelvie tipped No. 1 on the night passed Drew O’Connell to knot the score at 2-2. McKelvie scored again to put the Beavers ahead, 3-2, with just over five minutes to go in the second and put himself in select company. The No. 3 Tigers came out in the third with something to prove. The team was a perfect 9-0-0 during the regular season on their home ice. They responded well, netting three unanswered third-period markers to claim the victory.

DENVER, Colo. - Tyler Scofield and Blaine Jarvis each scored goals but the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team ran into a tough University of Denver squad falling to the fourth-ranked Pioneers, 4-2 at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. BSU started out strong taking a 1-0 lead just 6:19 into the game. Scofield got the Beavers on the board when Travis Winter found his speedy linemate streaking beyond the Pioneer defense. Scofield found the five hole for his team-leading ninth goal of 2007-08. Unfortunately that was the only offensive surge the Beavers would muster during the first 20 minutes. The team was out shot 15-6 in the stanza as they spent a good portion of the period at least a man short. On the other hand, Denver controlled the final ten minutes of the period getting a pair of unanswered goals from Tyler Bozak and Matt Glasser. The Pioneers got their fourth power-play opportunity when Matt Francis was sent to the penalty box just two minutes into the third and the fourth time was a charm for DU capitalizing on a defensive breakdown in the Pioneer zone. The Beavers cut the DU lead to 3-2 at the 12-minute mark when Matt Pope found Jarvis standing alone at the back door for the Beavers’ lone power-play marker on six opportunities on the night. Four minutes later, Chris Nutini earned five minutes in the box and a game misconduct for checking from behind setting BSU up with a power-play for the remainder of the period. However, the Beavers were unable to generate any push and finished the stanza trailing the hosting Pioneers 3-2. The third period was evenly played, but when the Beavers turned the puck over at the blue line during their forth power-play chance of the night, the Pioneer’s leading scorer Brock Trotter slid the unassisted, short-handed marker past Orlando Alamano at the 7:38 mark to stretch the lead to 4-2 and put an end to the momentum swing. Despite pulling Alamano to use the extra attacker for most of the final two minutes of the game, BSU was unable make up any ground and fell to the Pioneers 4-2. In all the BSU penalty kill was effective killing seven of DU’s eight opportunities, but time, effort and energy spent a man down caught up with the squad in the long run. Alamano allowed four goals in the loss falling to 1-4-0 on the season. He turned away 28 DU shots in 57:59 in net.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Matt Pope registered his second two-goal game of the season, but College Hockey America’s leading scorer, Ryan Cruthers potted a pair of his own in the third period to force a 2-2 stalemate in the opening game of the conference series. In a two-game set that could have major implications in the race for the 2007-08 conference championship, a tie was most certainly not on the first-place Beavers’ list of goals for the weekend. Although the Colonials, currently in third, didn’t make up any ground and second place Niagara is locked in non-conference play this weekend, the draw is still tough to swallow. The feeling is compounded due to the fact that the team let a third-period lead slip away for the second time in as many weeks. Pope sent the Beavers into the third period up 1-0 after he potted his first goal of the night with 1:05 remaining in the second. Cruthers locked the score at 1-1 just 2:39 into the third chipping the puck past BSU’s Matt Climie from the right doorstep. Midway through the period, Pope would again spark the Beavers offensively. Marino took a shot from the slot that was kicked to the side by Christian Boucher. Pope was there to clean up the loose puck recording his ninth goal of 2007-08 to put BSU up 2-1. But the lead would be short-lived. Just 2:16 later, Cruthers would strike again with help from Berkstresser and Towsley. The Beavers held off a late RMU charge a man down late in the game to force overtime, but both teams struggled to generate any potential scoring chances during the extra frame and the teams would settle for the draw. The tie stretched BSU unbeaten streak in overtime games to 11 games--a mark that reaches back to a March 11, 2006 victory over Alabama-Huntsville. BSU is 3-0-8 during that run. Pope’s power-play marker helped the Beavers to go 1-for-7 on the man advantage while for the CHA’s best penalty-kill unit posted its 15th shutout of the season holding the Colonials scoreless on four powerplay opportunities. BSU peppered the RMU goaltender with a season-best 42 shots on net in the game to own a 42-30 advantage in shots on goal. Through 25 games of the 2007-08 campaign, BSU has out shot its opponents in 21 and holds a 779-610 (+169) lead in shots on net. Climie turned away 28 RMU shots in 65:00 minutes played while allowing two goals. He moves to 9-4-3 on the season. Boucher recorded 40 saves in the tie stretching his record to 10-5-2 overall.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Through the clutter of 24 penalties whistled for a total of 83 minutes, Matt Climie’s school-record 12th career shutout propelled the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 4-0 victory over College Hockey America foe Robert Morris University in front of 1,618 at the John Glas Fieldhouse. For BSU, eleven different players had a hand in the scoring on the night, but Matt Francis’ fourth marker of the season was all the Beavers would as Climie turned away all 19 RMU shots to match Jack Horner’s Beaver Hockey record for shutouts in a season with five. Horner set the record during the 1976-77 season. The Beavers and Colonials spent most of the first period feeling each other out, but when RMU’s David Boguslawski and BSU’s Brandon Marino were sent to the box for roughing at the 19:42 mark of the period, the ice opened up and the Beavers took the early 1-0 lead. The Beavers went up 2-0, 12:41 into the second period when Graham McManamin netted his second marker of the season finding the back of the net on a slap shot form the point as the Beavers were cycling the puck around the zone. BSU held the lead and skated into the second intermission with a two-goal advantage over the visiting Colonials. The game was physical from the opening face off, but during the final 20 minutes, the level of physical play was elevated. Sixty-five minutes were served in the box for 11 penalties between the teams. Robert Morris took the brunt of the calls as four players received 10-minute misconduct penalties including a game misconduct to Kyle Frieday for checking from behind. The Beavers made the best of their time on the man advantage. Both Matt Pope and Travis Winter potted power-play goals with Winters’ team-leading fourth power-play marker of the season coming in a 5-on-3 situation. In all, BSU was 2-for-8 (.250) on the man advantage while holding the Colonials scoreless on five attempts. Combined, the Beavers’ special teams units lead the nation clicking at a 56.2 percent efficiency rate. Climie improved to 10-4-3 on the season with the win and is a scorching 9-1-3 in league play. The blanking of RMU not only extends his own career shutout mark at the school, it also vaults him past Grady Hunt (2001-2004) and into sole possession of the top spot on BSU’s Division I-era wins list with 41. Making 19 saves on 19 shots, he climed to eighth in the nation in save percentage (.930) while is goals against average dropped to 1.69 to place him third among all NCAA Division I goaltenders this season.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - A trio of unanswered goals during the final 40 minutes by the Wayne State University men’s ice hockey team propelled the Warriors past Bemidji State University at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The CHA loss was the first for the Beavers since falling to the same WSU team, 5-2, in the finale of the series in Detroit Nov. 17th. The Beavers netted two first-period goals, one even-strength and one on the power play, to head into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead, but a quick score by the Warriors to open the second seemed to snuff the Beavers’ spark and the team never recovered. Bemidji State opened the scoring at the 17-minute mark of the first period when Tyler Scofield skated the puck into the zone and behind the net before finding the backhand of Cody Bostock on the left post. With just 19 seconds remaining in the period, the Beavers did it again. Bostock and Scofield were credited with their second points of the game as junior defender dug the loose puck out of the far corner and fed Scofield. Scofield escorted the puck into the zone and spotted Matt Read for a one-timer in front of the net. BSU’s 2-0 cushion would last just 34 seconds as the second period got underway. Stavros Paskaris potted his eighth marker of the season to get WSU on the board during the fist minute of play in the second. Derk Bachynski and Ryan Bernardi each tallied assists on the goal. The trio of Paskaris, Bachynski and Bernardi teamed up again before the period was over to level the score at 2-2. This time Bachynski was on the receiving end of passes from Paskaris and Bernardi. The game-tying, power-play goal came with 17:06 and just a second left on a BSU penalty. With the score even entering the third, Wayne State seemed to earn the momentum and its pesky attitude would win the game midway through the stanza. Dylan Exton fired the puck past Matt Climie with just over seven minutes remaining in the game and despite a solid flurry of shots with an extra attacker during the game’s final minute, BSU was unable to extend the contest. Climie made 21 saves in 58:50 between the pipes as the loss drops him to 10-5-3 on the season. BSU saw its ten-game home unbeaten streak versus the Warriors come to an end in the loss as WSU earned its first victory at the Glas since a 5-0 victory over the Beavers Feb. 23, 2003. The Warriors also closed the gap in the all-time series to 9-22-5.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - It may have taken five periods, but Bemidji Stateawoke from its slumber and it could not have happened at a more opportune time. Senior center Matt Pope scrapped for a loose puck in front of the net and pushed it past the WSU goaltender Brett Bothwell to give the Beavers a 4-3 overtime victory. Down 2-1 entering the final period of regulation and falling behind 3-1 just 1:55 into the third, BSU came charging back out shooting the Warriors 14-3 during the last 20 minutes While scoring a pair of unanswered goals to tie the game with 12 minutes to go and adding the game-winner 2:57 into the overtime stanza. The extra-period marker extended BSU’s unbeaten streak in overtime games to 12, while it snapped the Warriors longest winning streak of the season at three. The Beavers netted the first goal of the game to break the scoreless tie at the 7:27 mark of the second period. The play was started by sophomore defender Chris Peluso who chased down a puck dumped into the far corner of the WSU offensive zone. He found Graham McManamin who, in turn, hit a streaking Blaine Jarvis with a pass as he entered the BSU zone. After a fake put the Warrior goaltender out of position, Jarvis tapped the puck into the back of the net with one second remaining on the Beavers’ second power-play of the evening. But before time would expire on the period, Wayne State stole the lead with a pair of even-strength goals. Chris Kushneriuk deflected a Tylor Michel shot from the point out of the reach of the screened BSU goaltender Matt Climie at the 10:38 mark and Jordan Inglis matched the goal 61 seconds later to put WSU up 2-1 heading into the final period of regulation. The Warriors added to their lead 1:55 into the third period on Inglis’ second goal of the game. Jarvis began the BSU comeback 4:13 into the period when he netted his his second power-play goal over the night, with help form Matt Read and Cody Bostock. With 12:46 to play, Tyler Scofield knotted the game at 3-3 with his 10th goal of 2007-08. The teams skated to a 3-3 tie as the third period final horn sounded despite an barrage of BSU shots fired on net during the period’s final four minutes. The Beavers managed only one shot on goal in the overtime period, but that shot was all they would need as Pope’s game-winner gave BSU a 4-3 victory and allowed it to salvage a series split with the Warriors.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Robert Morris University netted three evenstrength, second-period goals en route to handing the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team a 4-1 loss in College Hockey America play at the Island Sports Center in Moon Township, Pa. The Beavers were the first to light the lamp, and they did it in typical, BSU blue collar fashion. The tandem of Matt Francis and Matt Pope corralled an errant RMU pass and found Blaine Jarvis who netted his teamleading 12th goal of the season at the 11:20-mark of the first period. The teams would skate off the ice at the end of the period with the score at 1-0 in favor of the visiting Beavers despite RMU owning a 12-5 advantage in the shots category. The second period got messy for the Beavers. Although BSU killed three penalties, RMU out shot BSU 18-7 and netted three goals to take a two-goal lead. The Colonials knotted the score 7:37 into the second period. Logan Bittle tipped a shot past BSU’s Matt Climie. RMU took its first lead of the game 5:06 minutes later when Climie made a save on a Dave Cowan shot, but Sean Berkstresser gathered the rebound and flipped it over the right shoulder of the BSU goaltender. The hosts would dig the Beavers a two-goal hole with 49 seconds left in the period. Dave Biondich fluttered the puck over the left elbow of Climie to give RMU 3-1 lead heading into the third period. The Beavers struggled to generate any offensive momentum in the third and the Colonials would add a short-handed goal at the 12:28 mark of the third stanza to put the game out of reach for BSU and claim the 4-1 victory. Robert Morris finished the game with a 35-23 advantage in shots on goal. Each team was held scoreless on three power-play opportunities. Climie stopped 31 RMU shots in 57:38 in net allowing four goals in the loss falling to 11-5-3 on the season. RMU’s Christian Boucher allowed the BSU first-period goal but held the Beavers scoreless during the final two frames collecting 22 saves in the win. He improved to 14-7-2 on the season. The loss drops BSU’s all-time record versus RMU to 9-6-1 while the team is now 3-4-0 versus the Colonials on their home ice.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - With their backs against the proverbial wall and the 2007-08 College Hockey America regular-season championship banner hanging in the balance, the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team responded with an offensive explosion. The boys from BSU scored four first-period goals and would not look back taking a 7-2 victory to manage a series split with second place Robert Morris University and hold the five-point lead in the race for the title. After falling behind 1-0 just 90 seconds into the contest, BSU bounced back netting three goals in a matter of just 4:46 to erase a deficit and go up by two, 3-1. The Colonials went through all three of their goaltenders trying to find an answer for the BSU attack. The Beavers netted goals on their first three power-play shots, went 3-for-4 on the man advantage, and posted a season-high seven goals on the night as 15 players recorded their names in the box score. Robert Morris did its best to take BSU out of the game early. Before the squad would even break a sweat, Kyle Burton slid the puck passed BSU goaltender Matt Climie to give the Colonials the early lead. The goal served as a wake up call for the Beavers who netted three goals during the next five minutes and scored again before time expired on the first frame. The teams played even hockey for the first six minutes of the second, but when Graham McManamin’s blue line shot through traffic found its way into the back of the net, it would put BSU up 5-1 and knock Boucher out of the game for good. Midway through the period, freshman Ryan Cramer scored his first collegiate goal with help from Tyler Lehrke and Dan MacIntyre. The assist also stood as MacIntyre’s first collegiate point. Before the second period expired (19:31), the Beavers added a third power-play goal off the stick of Winter, who netted his second power-play marker of the game to record his first multi-goal game of 2007-08. The goal put BSU up 7-1 with just over 20 minutes to play RMU stole a goal in the third, but BSU held off the charge to take the game 7-2.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The No. 2 University of North Dakota men’s ice hockey team netted three-first period power-play goals and did not look back dropping Bemidji State University, 5-1, in non-conference play in front of a capacity (11,842) crowd at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. Bemidji State was whistled for four penalties in the first stanza opening the door for a potent Fighting Sioux power-play unit to get the home team on the board. UND got three goals in 91 seconds to put it up 3-0 with over five minutes to go in the period. The teams used the first 10 minutes of the game feel each other out, but when BSU’s Cody Bostock was sent to the box for crosschecking at the 12:12 mark and Matt Read earned five minutes and a game misconduct for checking from behind 20 seconds later, it put the Fighting Sioux on a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:40. The Sioux capitalized on the opportunity. Twenty-seven seconds into the two-man advantage, UND’s Robbie Bina was on the doorstep to cleanup the rebound sliding the puck past the BSU goaltender. The goal opened the floodgates for UND. The Fighting Sioux would add two more goals during the next 1:31 building a 3-0 lead before the Read penalty expired. UND dominated play for a majority of the second period out shooting BSU 18-4 with 11 shots coming on four Fighting Sioux’s power-play chances. BSU would, however, claim a power-play goal of their own in the second. Travis Winter found Riley Weselowski with a pass from behind the net and the blue liner banked a slap shot off the left pipe and into the back of the net for his second marker of the season. But UND would reclaim its three-goal lead before the end of the frame when Ryan Duncan potted UNDs fourth power-play goal of the afternoon. The Fighting Sioux would add an empty-net goal in the game’s final minutes (18:52) to push the score to 5-1 where it would stay. Matt Climie was stellar in net for BSU. Despite allowing the four UND power-play goals, he recorded 36 saves in 58:19 between the pipes. UND’s J.P. Lamoureux posted 17 saves as he improved to 208-2 on the season.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team had the No. 2 team in the country on the ropes for 55 minutes, but an Andrew Kozek goal late in the third would give the University of North Dakota a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Beavers. In athletics it has often been said that in big games, great players find ways to win. With the nation’s longest unbeaten streak on the line, T. J. Oshie single-handedly willed the Fighting Sioux a victory setting Kozek up for the game-winner. The win kept UND’s streak alive stretching to 13 games without a loss. The teams played the first 20 minutes to a scoreless tie. Each squad had its chances but was unable to light the lamp. It took UND 9:06 to register a shot on net and although the Fighting Sioux out shot the Beavers 13-3 in the period, it was BSU that had the two best scoring chances. Through 40 minutes of play, the score was still knotted at 0-0. UND accumulated eight shots on net to the Beavers’ six, but set the tempo for the period. As third period time ran off the clock, the urgency in the building became more apparent. Every possession of the puck brought the 11,043 in attendance to the edge of their seat and Oshie and the gang came through with just under five minutes to play. Despite pulling goaltender Orlando Alamano in favor of an extra attacker on two occasions during the final minutes, there would BSU no BSU comeback on this afternoon as UND held on for the win. Just 24-hours removed from yielding a season-high four powerplay goals, the BSU penalty kill not only stifled each of North Dakota’s three opportunities today, it held the Fighting Sioux without a single shot on goal. In just his sixth start of the season and first since a 5-4 loss to then third-ranked Colorado College Tigers, Alamano was sharp. He recorded 31 saves. He totaled 58:50 between the pipes for BSU and kept one of the top teams in the country off the board of over 55 minutes. On the other end the of the ice UND’s Aaron Walski posted the 13-save shutout in his first career start. The game also mark just the second time this seasons the Beavers have been held scoreless. The victory extended UND’s handle on the all-time series versus BSU to 15-1-1 and is unbeaten versus the Beavers since the 1969-70 season--a streak spanning 15 games.

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team found a way to win Friday but not without first taking the Beaver faithful on quite a roller-coaster ride. Despite taking a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest, BSU found themselves down 4-3 after 40 minutes of play and needed four third-period goals to skate out of the John Glas Fieldhouse with a 7-5 victory over Wayne State University. With the score knotted at 5-5 and the clock in its last 10 minutes, the Beavers urgently skated the puck into the zone. Matt Pope fired a shot form the right face off circle that was saved, but Brandon Marino bounced a second attempt off the leg of the WSU goaltender before Riley Weselowski found the rebound at the top of the crease and slid the puck into the back of the net. The goal would put the Beavers on top 6-5 and they would not look back. The game would start in a flurry for BSU. Before five minutes ticked off the clock, the Beavers had a 2-0 lead on goals from Tyler Scofield marker. Ian Lowe. But the BSU offense would hit a lull as the first period moved on and although the team held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal, WSU bounced back with an even-strength goal at the 17:35 mark to head into the locker room down 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. After BSU took a 3-1 lead early in the second frame, WSU bounced back on Stavros Paskaris’s second marker of the game. The tally sent the Beavers into a tail spin. During the next 10 minutes, BSU would fail to register a shot on net. Meanwhile the Warriors took the lead, 4-3, collecting two more goals by the 16-miniute mark of the stanza. Down a goal entering the final 20 minutes of play, Jarvis brought the crowd to its feet 6:12 in when he locked the score at 4-4. But just as BSU began to regain momentum, the team put the visitors on a 5-on-3 situation and WSU capitalized on the opportunity. Matt Francis evened the score at 5-5, 42-seconds later setting the table for Weselowski’s heroics. Orlando Alamano made 12 saves earning the victory in relief marking the third time he has come off the bench to lead BSU to a win.

Bemidji, MInn. - The Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team clinched the 2008 College Hockey America regular-season crown Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Wayne State University. The Beavers bounced back from an early 2-1 deficit in true team form. Nine skaters recorded at least a point in the game while freshman Ryan Cramer netted a pair of goals to pace the Beavers and post the first multi-goal came of his career. Skating into the second frame with the score knotted a two goals apiece, Cramer gave BSU the boost it needed. He potted the go ahead goal at the 4:42 mark and added another, which would proved to be the game winner, less than five minutes later (9:19). In one of the best individual efforts of the Beavers’ season, Cramer dug the puck out of the far corner, skated in front of the net and down the near side boards. Once he crossed into the BSU offensive zone, he cranked up and unleashed a laser that left the WSU goaltender frozen and sent his water bottle to the boards. BSU was first to get on the board. Tyler Scofield scored his 12th goal of the season on a pass from Matt Read just 5:31 into the game. But the Warriors would come charging back netting a power-play goal midway through the period and going up 2-1 on an unassisted goal by Jared Katz at the 17:30 mark. But BSU’s Kyle Hardwick leveled the score before the teams left the ice for the first intermission recording his first collegiate goal on a beautiful pass in front of the net by Brandon Marino as he charged down the slot. After Cramer’s double in the second, the Beavers entered the third period with a 4-2 lead and just 20 minutes of hockey separating it from the championship. Travis Winter put the Beavers up three goals, 5-2, 9:19 into the third when he tipped an odd-angle shot off the stick of Cody Bostock into the back of the net. The Warriors would add another goal late in the game, but it was too little too late as the Beavers completed the sweep and sent their seniors out in style with the win. BSU’s Matt Climie turned in another solid performance gaining the win to improve to 13-7-2 on the season turing away 25 WSU shots in 59:56 of work.

NIagara, N.Y. - With a 4-1 victory over the No. 4 seed Wayne State University Saturday afternoon, the top-seeded Beavers advance to the 2008 CHA Championship game for the fourth time in five years. Tyler Scofield led the Beavers with a goal and two assists while Matt Read and blue liner Cody Bostock each posted a goal and an assist. The game described by both BSU head coach Tom Serratore and senior goaltender Matt Climie as ‘weird,’ a total of 21 penalties were called for 54 minutes. The Beavers were whistled for nine, including a five-minute major and game disqualification, while WSU was sent to the box 12 times. Climie made10 saves in the win to move to 14-7-3 on the year and extend his BSU Division I-era record for career goaltending wins to 45. Special teams were a difference for the Beavers. A total of seven penalties were served by the teams with BSU getting whistled for four. The Beavers were 2-for-3 on the power-play, while the team’s penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4. Matt Pope got the Beavers on the board four minutes in when he tipped a Chris Peluso slap shot past the WSU goaltender on BSU’s first power-play chance of the game. Graham McManamin was also credited with an assist on the play. BSU’s second goal of the tournament came 12:26 later on the team’s second opportunity on the man advantage. Scofield and Read cycled the puck around to Bostock who fired a bullet that found the back of the net. His goal would stand as the eventual game-winner marking his team-best fourthof the season. The teams would skate off the ice after 20 minutes with BSU holding a 2-0 advantage. The Beavers pushed their lead to 3-0, 3:19 into second period when Read notched his ninth goal of the season on an assists from Travis Winter and Scofield. Each collecting their second point of the game on the play. Nine minutes into the stanza, BSU captain David Deterding was called for hitting from behind, sending him to the locker room early and holding him out of the final while it put the Beavers down a man for five minutes. The Warriors would seize the moment scoring a power-play goal three minutes into the opportunity. The score remained 3-1 until Scofield put the puck in an empty Wayne State goal with 32 seconds to play.

NIAGARA, N.Y. - Two goals in the final four minutes of the second period lifted Niagara University past the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team Sunday, in the 2008 College Hockey America Tournament Championship game. The 3-2 Niagara victory ends the Beavers’ campaign while it punches the Purple Eagles’ ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Beavers held a 2-1 lead with 12:33 gone in the second period, but Chris Moran forced the puck past BSU goaltender Matt Climie at the 16:28-mark only for Kyle Rogers to follow with a power-play marker two minutes and forty-seven seconds later it put BSU behind, 3-2, heading into the final 20 minutes. The Beavers battled until the end, but failed to capitalize on solid scoring opportunities in the third and, in turn, saw the season come to a close. Just as in the Saturday’s semifinal game, the Bemidji State powerplay proved to be an early spark for the Beavers. Before three minutes rolled off the clock, BSU was up 1-0 on a Brandon Marino goal. Chris Peluso started the play with a shot from the point and was redirected by Travis Winter who was parked in front of the net. Although NU’s goaltender Juliano Pagliero stopped the initial shot, Marino was there to clean up rebound, potting his third goal of the season. BSU blue liner Graham McManamin was whistled for tripping at the 9:42 mark, putting the Beavers a man short for the second time in the game and it would take NU just 32 seconds to take advantage. Ted Cook tied the game at one goal apiece at the 10:19 mark. The McManamin penalty offered the Purple Eagles a huge swing of momentum. In addition to getting NU back in the game, the Beavers struggled to regain their aggressive attack and registered just one shot in the final 10 minutes of the frame as the teams skated off the ice at the end of one period with score tied 1-1. Tyler Lehrke put the Beavers back on top midway through the second frame neatly placing a goal in the upper left corner of the net. Matt Francis was credited with the lone assist on the play. In the final seven minutes of the period, BSU would not only see Niagara level the score at 2-2 on a Moran even-strength goal, but when the penalty bug bit BSU again with 55 seconds to play in the stanza, it stung, as Rogers fired the eventual game-winning slap shot past Climie to put BSU in a one-goal hole with a period to play. The third period provided ample opportunity, but Bemidji State was unable to reel in the hometown Purple Eagles. In the period, the Beavers had a delayed penalty, five-on-three opportunity for 1:31, out shot the hosts 9-5 and received an extra surge when what would have been Niagara’s fourth goal was called back with 4:16 to play, but the Beavers could not break the seal Pagliero had on the goal.

College Hockey America

Birth of a Conference

College ice hockey’s continuing development and expansion received another boost during the summer of 1999 with the formation of College Hockey America. The seven charter members of the CHA were the United States Air Force Academy (Colo.), University of Alabama-Huntsville, United States Military Academy (N.Y.), Bemidji State University (Minn.), University of Findlay (Ohio), Niagara University (N.Y.), and Wayne State University (Mich.). “Hockey at all levels is experiencing unprecedented growth and popularity,” said storied BSU head coach and former CHA Commissioner R.H. “Bob” Peters. “The advent of College Hockey America is a monumental and historic event evidencing this growth at the collegiate level. To quote the late Bob Johnson, legendary college, Olympic and National Hockey League coach, ‘It’s a great day for hockey’.”

Leadership

In its inaugural season, the CHA coaches brought a collective 95 years of coaching experience, 1,754 wins and 33 postseason appearances to the conference. R.H. “Bob” Peters, who accepted the role of CHA Commissioner after retiring from coaching, was the dean of CHA coaches with more than 740 wins. The CHA was fortunate to have the guidance and leadership of WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod for its first two years. McLeod worked with the seven league coaches and was instrumental in establishing the conference in 1999.

Something Old, Something New

The CHA encompasses programs steeped in tradition, such as former small-college powers Alabama-Huntsville and Bemidji State, to up and coming programs like Niagara, to college hockey newcomer Robert Morris. Bemidji State and Alabama-Huntsville competed for the Division II national championship six times in the 1990’s with the Beavers winning four times and the Chargers winning twice, and the two teams have now carried that rivalry to Division I. Bemidji State, which began playing hockey in 1948, had won a total of 13 national championships at the small college level before making the jump to Division I. Bemidji State (.678) and Alabama-Huntsville (.677) have the two highest all-time winning percentages amongst the 58 teams which currently comprise Division I hockey. Niagara began its Division I hockey program in 1996 and posted a winning season each of its first four years, culminating in NCAA Tournament berths in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Robert Morris which enters its fifth season of college hockey competition, posted eight wins during its inaugural 2004-05 campaign and posted its first season of .500-or-better in 2007-08 going 15-15-4 overall and clinging to a race for the regular season championship into the final three weeks of the season..

Evolution of CHA

Three founding members of College Hockey America remain with the conference - Ala.-Huntsville, Bemidji State and Niagara - while four have since departed. Army departed CHA for the MAAC, now Atlantic Hockey, following the league’s inaugural 1999-2000 season. Findlay competed in CHA for five seasons before folding both its men’s and women’s ice hockey programs due to budgetary reasons in 2004. Air Force competed in CHA for seven seasons before departing the conference for Atlantic Hockey following the 2005-06 season. The 2007-08 campaign was Wayne State’s last

as a member of the CHA as the institution folded its collegiate men’s hockey program. Robert Morris has been the only new addition to CHA since the conference was founded. The Colonials joined CHA when the school added Division I ice hockey as a varsity intercollegiate sport for the 2004-05 campaign.

CHA Regular-Season Schedule

The departure of Air Force and Wayne State in the last three seasons has left College Hockey America with four members beginning with the 2008-09 campaign, forcing the league to play an unbalanced, 18-game conference slate for the league’s members. In prior years, CHA has played a four-game round robin regular season schedule, with two games home and two games away against each of the league’s other teams. This year, the round robin is intact - each CHA program will play the others home and away in two-game series - but each program will also play one additional two-game series against each of the other three CHA programs. Bemidji State will play home series versus Ala.-Huntsville and will pick up extra road series with both Niagara and Robert Morris to bring the season series with each team to six games.

CHA Championship

In addition to a challenging non-conference schedule and its regular conference slate, College Hockey America will conduct a postseason championship tournament for the 10 consecutive year. This year’s tournament will take place March 13-14, 2009 in Bemidji, Minn. The CHA Tournament champion will again receive an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament. BSU has made the championship game in five of the last fix seasons and won the tournament crown in 2005 and 2006.

NCAA Tournament History

CHA programs have made seven trips to the NCAA Tournament, posting a record of 1-7. Niagara earned an at-large bid to the 2000 NCAA Championship after the CHA’s inaugural season. Niagara stunned New Hampshire 4-1 in Minneapolis, Minn, then fell to eventual national champion North Dakota, 4-1. Wayne State fell to Colorado College, 4-2, in the first round of the 2003 Midwest Regional. Niagara made its second NCAA trip in 2004, falling in the first round, 5-2, to Boston College. Bemidji State was CHA’s first back-to-back participant in the NCAA Tournament (2005, 2006), and was defeated by the eventual national champion in each of its appearances. BSU took Denver to overtime before losing 4-3 in the semifinals of the 2005 Northeast Regional, and fell 4-0 to Wisconsin in the semifinals of the 2006 Midwest Regional. The 2007 CHA representative in the NCAA Tournament was Alabama-Huntsville. The Cinderella ride through the CHA Tournament for the No. 5 seed was ended when it faced Notre Dame in the Regional Semifinals. The Fighting Irish defeated the Chargers 3-2. Last season, Niagara was the league representative in the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Eagles fell to Michigan, 5-1, in the East Regional Semifinal.
