Steve Sertich enters his first season at Bemidji State. Sertich comes to Bemidji State University after spending the last 13 years as the head varsity coach at Roseville Area High School. He coached the Roseville boys’ team from 1993-2003, leading it to a 156-71-11 record and two Minnesota State tournament appearances. Under Sertich’s guidance, Roseville finished third in the 2002 tournament and second in 2003. He led Roseville to Suburban East Conference Championships in 2002 and 2003. Sertich earned four Coach of the Year honors, as he was named Section 3AA boys’ Coach of the Year in 1999; Section 2AA Boys’ Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003; and Class AA Coach of the Year in 2003.
In 2003, Sertich moved to head coach of the Roseville girls’ varsity team and in three seasons lead the program to a record of 62-21-2. The Roseville girls finished fourth in the 2006 State tournament and captured Surburban East Conference titles in both 2004 and 2005. Sertich was named the 2004 Section 2AA Girls’ Coach of the Year. Sertich began his coaching career in 1976 as the head boys’ varsity coach at Northfield (Minn.) High School over the next 20 years he would hold a variety of head and assistant coaching positions at the high school, college and national levels. After one year at Northfield, he moved on to Virginia (Minn.) High School as head boys’ varsity hockey coach for one year, was an assistant with Team Midwest in the U.S. National Development Program at the 1979 Olympic Sports Festival, spent one year as an assistant at Colorado College in 1982-83, and served three years as an assistant coach at Palmer (Colo.) High School from 1983-86. He returned back to Minnesota in 1987 as the assistant boys’ varsity coach at Blaine (Minn.) High School and later served as an assistant at Richfield (Minn.) High School. In 1997, he was an assistant for Team Minnkota with the U.S. Development Program Select 17 program. Sertich also has extensive camp coaching experience, starting as the director and head coach of the Minnesota Hockey Satellite Training Program in Roseville from 1995-2003. In addition, he has been the director of the Roseville Summer Hockey School since 2000 and the director and head coach of the Roseville Hockey Satellite Training Program since 2003. Sertich began his playing career with the Colorado College Tigers in 1970 assembled a standout four-year career, during which he played 125 games and scored 75-87=162 points. He had 28-25=53 points as a junior in 1972-73 and 25-36=61 points as a senior in 1973-74. Sertich was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1973-75, and played on a team which trained in Bemidji. He was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, which finished fifth at the Innsbruck, Austria games. The U.S. team recorded wins over Finland and Poland in route to a 2-3 finish in Group A. He also played two years in the German Professional Leagues, spending the 1974-75 season as captain for Fussen and two seasons from 1978-80 plany for Nurnburg. Sertich is a 1974 graduate of Colorado College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and humanities. He received a master’s degree in elementary education from Minnesota State in 1999. Sertich’s son, Marty Sertich, played for Colorado College from 2002-06 and scored 61-121=181 points during a stellar four-year career. He won the 2005 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given to the most outstanding player in college hockey, and was a finalist for the award in 2006. He was First-Team All WCHA and WCHA player of the year in 2005 and was a second team All-WCHA selection in 2006.

Jim Ingman enters his sixth season behind the bench for the Beavers bringing stability and a keen eye to recruit with the best. Ingman was part of the most successful season in the history of the Division I program (12-13-8 overall and 7-11-6) in 2001-02. The past three years Ingman has run the event management program at BSU along with his duties as assistant coach. This season Ingman will focus on Hockey at Bemidji State.
Paulsen begins her Third season as an assistant coach at Bemidji State. Paulsen will also begin her second year as head softball coach. Prior to her hiring at BSU, Paulsen served as a student assistant coach and assistant goalie coach for the University of Wisconsin last season. Paulsen’s most recent coaching stint came in the summer of 2004 with the USA Hockey Girls Select 14 team, where she was co-head coach.
Ingman coaches the goaltenders and several of the netminders he has coached have made their mark in the record books at Bemidji State. Anik Côté ended her career as the school’s all-time leader in goals against average (3.50) and save percentage (.893), while Jill Luebke finished her career third all-time in goals against average (3.77) and fourth in save percentage (.880). Ingman has also coached junior Emily Brookshaw for the past two seasons who currently sits first with a (2.93) goals against average and a save percentage of (.910). Brookshaw was named to the WCHA all rookie team in 2004-05. She was also a member of the 2005 WCHA All-Star team and was a member of the 2006 U.S. Women’s National U-22 Team.
Paulsen has also served as strength and conditioning coach for Acceleration Madison (Wis.), a skill development program designed to condition athletes in a variety of sports.
Before joining the staff at Bemidji State, Ingman helped former BSU coach Jason Lesteberg build the Wisconsin-Stevens Point program. Ingman developed the Stevens Point club program, organizing the club in 1998 and helping prepare it for its eventual rise to varsity status. Ingman’s first team finished 3-17, but improved to 22-3 in 1999 in its final season as a club program. The club team was elevated to NCAA Division III status for the 2000-01 season. Ingman handed head coaching reigns of the Stevens Point program over to Lesteberg upon its NCAA elevation, but stayed on staff as an assistant coach. Ingman and Lesteberg guided Stevens Point to a 13-13-1 record, including a 10-0-0 mark against other first-year programs. Ingman held responsibilities for goaltenders, helping develop eventual First-Team All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association goalie Diane Sawyer. He also helped out with recruiting and the following year Stevens Point compiled a record of 26-1 in the programs second season.
Hailing from Eau Claire, Wis., Paulsen graduated from Wisconsin in 2004 after playing for the Badgers in 1999-2003. A three-year captain and four-year letterwinner, Paulsen is the all-time leading scorer among Western Collegiate Hockey Association defenders with 42 goals and 88 assists. Paulsen finished her career as Wisconsin’s third all-time leading scorer with 130 points and tied for third in games played at 136. In addition, Paulsen was a first-team All-WCHA pick in her freshman year (1999-00) and a second-team All-WCHA selection as a senior (2002-03). The 2000 Wisconsin Most Valuable Player also earned team honors as Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. Paulsen took over Co-Head Coaching duties last season with Jim Ingman after Bruce Olson resigned half-way through the season. Ingman and Paulsen led the team to a 7-11-0 record and a 11-23-2 mark overall with a 10-18-0 mark in the WCHA. Paulsen received a bachelor of science degree in human development and family studies in May, 2004.
Paulsen will work closely with BSU’s defensemen and its power-play and penalty-killing units. Ingman took over Co-Head Coaching duties last season with Sis Paulsen after Bruce Olson resigned half-way through the season. Ingman and Paulsen led the team to a 7-11-0 record and a 11-23-2 mark overall and a 10-18-0 mark in the WCHA. Ingman received a bachelor of science degree in soil and waste resources with an environmental law emphasis in May, 2001.

SUPPORT STAFF Brian Conroy Troy Berneking Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Northern Illinois University ‘06 First year at Bemidji State
Brian Conroy begins his first year with the athletics department at Bemidji State as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. Conroy comes to BSU after graduating from Northern Illinois University in 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training. At NIU Conroy served as a student assistant working with the football program and did out reach work at DeKalb High School. In addition to his duties at Northern Illiinois, Conroy also worked at the Kennedy Space Center and helped out with summer camps at the University of Notre Dame and Northern Illinois University.
Melissa Schaeffer Student Equipment Manager First year student manager Former BSU hockey player
Melissa Schaeffer will serve as student equipment manager for her first season. Schaeffer skated with the Beavers during the last four season. Last season Schaeffer was a senior captain for the Beavers and recorded one goal and two assists good for three points. Throughout her career at BSU Schaeffer played in ninty-three games recording four goals and five assists for nine points. Schaeffer is in her last year at Bemidji State majoring in physical education.

Graduate Assistant Sports Information Director University of Minnesota, Crookston ‘04 Second year at Bemidji State Troy Berneking is in his second year as Graduate Assistant Sports Information Director at Bemidji State, serving as the women’s hockey media relations contact. He is also the contact for cross country. A 2004 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Crookston, Berneking earned a bachelor of science degree in sport and recreation management, business management with an emphasis in marketing and a minor in coaching. In addition Berneking worked in the sports information office at Minnesota, Crookston.
Bonnie Hanson Student Equipment Manager First year student manager
Bonnie Hanson will serve as student equipment manager for her first season. Hanson is a 2006 graduate of Waconia High School in Waconia, Minn. While at Waconia she was the manager for the Waconia track team. Hanson is undecided in her major at BSU.
