Minors
Majors ACCOUNTING, B.S. The bachelor of science in accounting gives students a solid foundation in business with a specialization in accounting, so they’ll have the educational background to excel in any type of business position. Further, students will find themselves in the desirable position of having the financial expertise to rise to the top in an increasingly complex business environment. The bachelor of science in accounting program begins by students taking a core set of business, economics, and accounting courses giving them an understanding of all aspects of a business or organization. Students then go on to a more in-depth study of accounting, exploring the world of professional accounting. Courses include a mix of theory and practice to give the preparation students need for a successful career.
ACCOUNTING, B.S. – ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS (AIS) EMPHASIS This emphasis is geared toward enhancing student’s ability to use and audit accounting information systems and technology. By studying management information systems, systems analysis, and data modeling and design, the student will learn how to implement, use, and evaluate information systems. With a background in AIS, the student will be preparing for work as an internal or external auditor, for a role implementing and evaluating technology systems within an organization, or a career in information assurance, examining that proper design and controls that protect against fraud are in place.

FRAUD EXAMINATION
Available to any non-major, the minor in accounting is a useful addition to any career path in private industry, government, or non-profit sectors. Students will study basic accounting concepts and practices and tax preparation, giving them tools that can be applied to any major field of study. Taking the minor is an excellent way to enhance an individual’s studies. It provides a concentration of courses that can complement a chosen major and provide an understanding of the financial systems of an organization.
This minor offers an interdisciplinary field of study in accounting, business administration, and criminal justice. Students will gain the skills needed to detect, investigate, and prevent fraud and embezzlement, criminal financial transactions, money laundering, and other types of illegal activity. A student may work in investigation or litigation support, being called upon to testify in court proceedings. Individuals will also have the skills to help companies identify areas of risk, implement internal controls on financial systems, and reduce their risk of fraud. Upon graduation, a student may sit for the Certified Fraud Examination.
Student Groups VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) Through the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, accounting students who have completed the Tax I and passed the IRS certification tests, donate 40 hours of community service during spring semester. They use their tax knowledge to provide free tax assistance to other students, including international students with special treaty requirements, in addition to low income, and elderly individuals in the area who are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with tax law and filing requirements. VITA offers not only free tax preparation, but also free e-filing for those who qualify. ASSOCIATION OF ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONALS
ACCOUNTING, B.S. – CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTING (CPA) EMPHASIS By choosing the CPA field of emphasis as an accounting major, students will go on to the study of advanced accounting, which will prepare them to sit for the CPA exam. Our program of advanced accounting courses is an intensive five-day-a-week program of study that is designed to prepare the student for each section of the exam. Our graduate’s passage rate of the CPA exam is excellent, and above the state average.

The purpose of this organization is to increase accounting interest and education among accounting and business students and to promote professional growth. This is accomplished through social activities, field trips, guest speakers, tutoring, networking, and community service. ACCOUNTING AND AUDITING STUDENT CONFERENCE Annually, Bemidji State University accounting majors attend this Twin Cities conference allowing them to network with prospective employers, faculty, and other students. At least 50 employers provide information and recruit interested students for internships and entry-level positions.

Students begin their study of business administration by gaining a broad and comprehensive background in all areas of business practices with a required set of core courses. ONLINE The online bachelor of science in business administration is offered entirely online. It provides students with a comprehensive background in business and offers a range of emphasis options allowing them to further specialize their studies. COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CIS), B.S. The computer information systems major at Bemidji State University combines the best of the business administration and computer science majors into a unique hybrid information technology (IT) major. Students get a solid technical education in computer science, while at the same time receiving classroom and real-world experience in business and management. As an MIS major, students will acquire a unique set of integrated skills combining cutting edge IT practices with applied business methods, through a cohesive blend of business, management, and business information systems courses. MARKETING COMMUNICATION, B.S. Marketing communication is an interdisciplinary major that combines critical advertising and public relations courses from the Department of Mass Communication with essential marketing courses from the Department of Business Administration. This hybrid major targets those students who desire a career in the promotional area of the universal marketing mix. As a Marketing communication major, students will receive a balanced mix of business and communication foundation, theory, and skills courses. They will study the art of crafting messages in a variety of settings and learn to design, develop, and implement effective marketing strategies. Students will also learn research methods that develop their skills in collecting and analyzing market potential. In this program students study public relations, advertising, and campaign planning.

COMPUTER FORENSICS In this interdisciplinary minor, students will study business applications, information systems, application development and data modeling, computer forensics, and criminal justice. Students will learn procedures for discovering and preserving evidence, types of computer and Internet crimes, and methods of searching for and retrieving evidence using software tools. The demand for computer forensic professionals is on the rise. Those who have skills in data recovery are being sought by law enforcement, as well as by businesses and organizations. MARS is a faculty-directed, student-run center uniquely serving the northwest Minnesota business community while providing Bemidji State’s marketing students with hands-on learning experiences. MARS research services include feasibility studies, Internet and exploratory research, focus groups, group interviews, telephone surveys, mail surveys, and strategic management analysis (SWOT). MARS has completed projects for area businesses and organizations, including a variety of BSU departments and offices.

OMICRON DELTA KAPPA (ODK) Membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society is regarded as one of the highest collegiate honors that can be awarded to an individual, along with Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Most circles limit membership to less than the top one quarter of one percent of students in a class.

THE ADRIAN PROJECT
(SIFE)
The Adrian Project is a one-day program that turns college accounting majors into “special agents” for the day. This unique program places college students into groups, assigned to solve hypothetical financial crimes. Some of the hypothetical investigations involve business owners skimming from their company, a bar owner with a second set of books, a multiple-filer scheme, and a drug trafficker. Each student group has an experienced special agent or retiree who coaches them and provides learning points along the way. It’s up to the students to follow the paper trial.

Our curriculum recognizes the convergence of media with the lines blurred between print, electronic, and promotional media. Therefore, our aim is to prepare all students to communicate meaningful messages successfully, utilizing print, still and moving images, audio and multimedia technologies. THE NORTHERN STUDENT
As a mass communication major at BSU, students will be prepared for careers in the news, information, artistic, and entertainment sectors. Students will learn the basics of media theory, criticism, and research, in addition to applied skills for communicating in print, still and moving images, and multimedia formats.
The marketing communication major prepares students for a career specifically for the business sector. As a marketing communication major, students will receive training in theory and research, in addition to applied skills in a variety of media.
BSU’s FM 90 radio station plays top-40 hits and is one of the most popular radio stations in the Bemidji area. Being part of FM 90 radio means students act as a live DJ during their on-air shift. Students will also have opportunities to create their own shows and select their own music.
The Northern Student has been the campus newspaper at Bemidji State University since 1926. The studentrun newspaper, which is published on Wednesdays, is located in Hobson Memorial Union. Students contribute editorial opinion, news stories, and information about campus events and activities. They also sell advertising and do design and layout for each issue.

Applied engineering at Bemidji State University is a “2 + 2” degree program available to individuals who have an interest in engineering-related career fields. The degree builds directly upon an individual’s past education if they possess a certificate, diploma, or 2-year technical degree. Individuals who do not have prior college level education will also be able to complete degree requirements, but may need to complete some technical courses.
Design technology students are able to choose between three specializations: digital design/electronic, digital design/print, and exhibit design. Coursework in design technology adheres to real-world design and production standards used by working production managers. Our students are challenged to be innovative, while completing projects on time and on budget. Students gain a strong foundation in the principles of art and design with courses from within the Department of Visual Arts.
The engineering technology program offers a strong foundation and technology core, coupled with a selection of electives in the professional core that draw from the fields of industrial engineering technology and manufacturing engineering technology. This major focuses on the application of engineering principles in production environments. As a graduate, students may pursue a career in a variety of work from manufacturing and processing to technical services.
Our highly interactive lab courses allow students to ask questions and seek feedback from faculty and peers. Ongoing critiques and discussions help students develop critical-thinking skills in assessing design solutions and build strong communication skills.
INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY, B.S.
Course work is relevant and practical to a wide range of workplace settings connected with engineering activities. The courses build upon a persons technical expertise as well as past and current work experience to enhance their competencies in engineering related activities found in a wide range of business and industry. Completion of the degree will open doors of opportunity for professional advancement and leadership positions. With a “2 + 2” track, this means that students are able to apply many of the credits they have earned in a 2-year A.S., A.A.S., diploma or certificate toward a four-year degree. If students do not possess a technical college degree, they will need to complete at least 26 technical courses either at Bemidji State University or at a technical college.
We maintain strong industry ties with an advisory board that helps keep the University current on design and communication trends, challenges, and technologies. Our board represents about 45 design-related companies from throughout the United States, including a strong contingent of regionally based companies.

The industrial technology program includes three areas of emphasis: construction management, manufacturing technology, and manufacturing management. All students pursuing a degree in the industrial technology program will acquire a foundation of knowledge in technical and managerial concepts, which enables students to seek employment in a variety of industrial areas.

Construction Management This emphasis consists of a broad-based industrial, technical, and professional core of industrial technology courses supplemented with construction management applications of building theories and practices. Students are exposed to other influences such as professional business courses, technical education, and manufacturing and design technologies, which help broaden their understanding of the modern construction industry.
Manufacturing Technology Coursework in manufacturing technology focuses on problem solving advanced technological subjects, quality issues, and processes. Supplementary courses in math, physics, or chemistry strengthen graduates as they work with engineers making decisions related to the complexities of modern day production methods. Students learn to organize, plan ahead, and work in a team-oriented industrial setting.
Manufacturing Management The manufacturing management emphasis develops a student’s abilities to manage, while preparing graduates for leadership positions. Management is part of leading. Students in this emphasis area often enjoy careers in management and supervision. Regularly, other students add this emphasis to supplement their background. For example, students with a construction emphasis frequently obtain a manufacturing management enphasis since a large part of their responsibilities will be working with and leading people.

CONSTRUCTION SITE MANAGEMENT, B.A.S. Bemidji State University is partnering with Northwest Technical College and other Minnesota State Colleges and Unviersities to offer a bachelor of science in construction site management. This major is for the student who desires employment in the technical areas of the construction industry. Although it is not applicable to a teacher licensure program, the degree is ideal for students who wish to transfer a technical block of construction-related credits, such as courses from a carpentry diploma, plumbing or residential/HVAC diploma to obtain a B.A.S. in construction site management from Bemidji State University. PROTOTYPE ENGINEERING B.A.S. This major is for students who desire employment in the technical fields of the model making industry. The program is ideal for students who wish to transfer from Northwest Technical College (NTC), particularly the industrial model making program, and obtain a four-year degree in prototype engineering technology at Bemidji State University.
TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT, B.A.S. Technology management at Bemidji State University builds primarily upon an individual’s past technical education and related work experience. However, individuals do have the option to complete this program without prior college-level education or related work experience. This degree enhances student’s management, supervisory, and leadership skills to open doors for professional advancement and leadership positions. CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION, B.S. – ONLINE
B.S. in Career & Technical Education - Secondary Education Track A degree program designed for those who would like to use their expertise to teach in high school.
B.S. in Career & Technical Education - Post-secondary Education Track A degree program designed for those who would like to use their expertise to teach at a technical college or other postsecondary educational institution.
Teacher Education Series (Endorsement) A set of classes designed for those who want to teach at a technical college.
Work-Based Learning (Endorsement) A set of classes designed for K–12 licensed teachers who would like to develop their skills in supervising and directing students in work-based learning.
TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION, B.S. The technology education curriculum is planned primarily for prospective 7th–12th grade teachers. The program leads to a bachelor of science degree. Graduates work in middle school and high school technology departments. Some of our graduates also pursue training positions in industry. The Technological Studies department alters its curriculum to reflect trends in education licensure requirements.

THE DESIGN GUILD
SOCIETY OF MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS (SME-STUDENT CHAPTER)
The Construction Management Club (CMC) was formerly the Student Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors Club (ABC Club). In Fall 2005, the student members voted to change the organization’s name and take on a dual affiliation by also forming a chapter of the Associated General Contractors. Both organizations are nationally recognized, professional management associations for the construction industry, which is comprised of general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers. The CMC provides students with valuable construction industry contacts and opportunities, such as field trips and guest speakers, along with tips on internships and the job market. Students also participate in community service projects, state and national conferences, and fundraising activities.
The Design Guild, an extension of the undergraduate and graduate education art training program, expands student members’ knowledge in the fields of graphic design, multimedia, and other forms of art. Through the experience and interaction with peers, the Design Guild expands the knowledge base of club members in a variety of artistic mediums. Members display work, build personal portfolios, and gain information in a multitude of collegiate fields.
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, founded in 1932, has more than 80,000 members and has chartered more than 300 senior chapters and 200 student chapters. The purpose of the society is to advance scientific knowledge in manufacturing engineering, provide the means and methods of applying such knowledge both in practice and education, and to promote and engage actively in research, writing, publishing, and disseminating knowledge within this field.
EXHIBIT DESIGN CLUB
Meeting monthly, the student chapter schedules educational tours and events. We also discuss plans for projects and internships. SME conducts tours, introduces students to professional manufacturing contacts, and provides an environment in which to increase and enrich their knowledge of the manufacturing industry while having fun.
The Exhibit Design Club is a student organization open to all students majoring in or interested in exhibit design. The purpose of this organization is to help students gain a better understanding of the exhibit design industry. The Exhibit Design Club also plans special activities that include guest speakers and field trips. The club also seeks to build strong relationships with corporations that exhibit designers would be interested in and to keep the club informed of information pertaining to the industry. 360° has developed the 360° Seamless Career Pathway for manufacturing careers, which shows individuals that manufacturing offers a career with no dead ends, and has aligned existing curriculum at the member institutions to the 360° Seamless Career Pathway. 360° is developing curriculum in partnership with member institutions, business and industry, and workforce development to meet the needs of today’s dislocated worker and start the individual on the Seamless Career Pathway. 360° has provided more than $2 million in funding to member institutions to invest in capital equipment recommended by industry partners in order for students to be trained and educated on the latest technology used by today’s advanced manufacturing companies.
