Catches hypothermia and infections early in low weight newborns at home
5
The Problem The Solution
Low weight newborns are at high risk of Hypothermia and infection, leading to poor weight gain, high care costs and even death.
The BEMPU TempWatch monitors the newborn’s temperature continuously for one month. If the baby is ever hypothermic, it alerts the caregiver with an intuitive audio-visual alarm. This enables the them to perform Kangaroo Care to prevent hypothermia-related illness or death.
Regular temperature monitoring is impractical in low-resource settings by parents who lack the tools or training to screen for Hypothermia. Each year 22 MILLION babies are born Low Birth Weight
Nearly 2 . 5 MILLION newborns die within the ďŹ rst month of life

The alarm prompts mothers to give more Kangaroo Care to their newborns resulting in increased breastfeeding
TempWatch prevents prolonged cold stress and ensures the newborn maintains a healthy temperature, promoting weight gain and healthy growth
As many as 42% of newborn deaths are related to Hypothermia

Device to manage apneas and auto-stimulate the foot to restart breathing
9
The Problem Almost all preterm newborns under 34 weeks of gestational age experience apneas, or a cessation of breathing. If not resolved immediately, apneas can lead to irreversible injury or death.
3.3M
Preterms in India per year are at high risk for apnea
Needs rapid intervention
Attention is delayed/ absent in lowresource settings
The Solution Using pulse oximetry and an auto-stimulation mechanism, ApneBoot is a foot worn device to prevent apneas. It “flicks” and vibrates the foot sole of the newborn stimulating the nervous system to restart breathing in the event of an apnea. The device also creates an audio-visual alarm to get the caretaker’s attention. It empowers nurses and mothers to rapidly intervene before any injury can occur.

Personalized online health support for new parents
The Solution
BabyOnTrack Barely! I think the cold is getting worse. She is irritable and cranky.
BabyOnTrack Good morning, Roshni! How is your baby doing today?
BabyOnTrack What diet should I follow to increase my breastmilk supply?
Okay. Please send a 2 minute video where her breathing can be clearly observed.
VACCINATION REMINDER: Hib 2 Rotavirus 2 PCV 2 dose is due this week. Please schedule an appointment with your doctor. Thanks! My baby has some red rashes on her neck today… it’s right under her chin. Should I be worried?
Her breathing is fast and noisy. Try giving steam to relieve nasal congestion. In addition to you diet, the best way to increase milk is avoiding stress and mainaining a calm and restful state of mind. We also suggest warm breast massaging and Kangaroo Care.
It looks like there isn’t much to worry about. Apply coconut oil on her neck once a day and note any changes over the next 2 days.
What is Kangaroo Care?
BabyOnTrack is an online home support platform for parents of newborns. Through calls and messages, it connects parents to an in-house clinical team that provides personalized counselling and advice on common newborn concerns. For high risk babies, proactive monitoring is conducted through frequent follow-ups and videos to monitor daily behaviours. Content is designed to educate parents on health-promoting behaviours at home, such as breastfeeding, KMC, maternal nutrition and hygiene. If an anomaly is detected, parents are guided by our clinical team on appropriate home-based care, or are advised to seek medical attention. In addition, parents are sent reminders for vaccinations, well-baby check-ups and screening of developmental milestones at home. Personalized care and follow-ups help us improve parent engagement and compliance.
The Problem Quality of private healthcare varies across India and particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, there is a disconnect in information flow between doctors and new parents. Parents leave the hospital with minimal training on best practices and healthy behaviors to follow at home, thereby feeling unprepared to make informed decisions about their baby's health. They struggle with not knowing "what is normal". Information available online is fragmented and generic, and taking a baby back to the hospital is expensive and inconvenient.

Helps parents provide prolonged Kangaroo Care to their newborn 13
The Problem Regular Kangaroo Care has shown to have signiďŹ cant positive health outcomes for babies. However, it can be uncomfortable over long periods of time. Further, in communal home settings, mothers resume household activities and they often lack privacy, which leads to reduced motivation to provide Kangaroo Care to their babies.

Tracks quantity and quality of Kangaroo Care received by newborn at home
Carelet is a Kangaroo Care (KC) monitoring bracelet that tracks the quantity and quality of KC provided and prompts parents to improve compliance thereby improving health outcomes for babies. Carelet records the number and duration of KC episodes and 1) gives visual feedback to parents either showing them they need to correct or continue KC and 2) enables the data to be accessed by Health Workers and updated in a hospital-based tracking app.
A smart tool to promote Kangaroo Care amongst all family members
Kangagrow is a behavioural design tool to promote Kangaroo Care (KC) amongst all family members. The tool measures the amount of KC given to a newborn and subsequently offers a real-time emotionally motivating audio-visual feedback. Kangagrow is a smart sleeve that can be attached to any existing sling or wrap to augment it into a smart sling to encourage KC.
A wearable jacket to enable safe transport through Kangaroo Care
Kangubator is a low-cost inatable jacket to enable Kangaroo Transport, allowing any adult to act as a human incubator during transport of preterm and LBW newborns. It enables safe and effective Kangaroo Care and mimics in-utero conditions to prevent transport-induced hypothermia and noise-vibration stress. Kangubator ensures safety of newborns and reduces clinical 16 morbidities and mortalities related to transportation care.
Maternal Care Innovations 17
Low-cost postpartum hemorrhage management tool
The UBT-Kit is a low-cost, easy-to-use and safe intervention designed to enable management of uncontrolled Postpartum Hemorrhage. The uterine balloon tamponade system is assembled using simple components- foley catheter, condom, string, syringe, and clean water. This kit can be used by health providers to reduce the risk of maternal mortality due to PPH.
A simplified screening tool to detect postpartum depression in Mothers
BHappy is an app and paper-based tool used by health providers to screen mothers for Postpartum Depression at discharge and key neonatal follow-up visits. Based on a mother’s responses, BHappy will categorize the mother as healthy, at risk, or needs immediate attention, after which mothers and their families will be connected to appropriate clinical assistance and also be 18 counselled on proper maternal and newborn care.
