This hilltop site, located in Cincinnati’s historic Mount Adams neighborhood, visually links the urban hub to its west with the rural landscape of Kentucky and the winding Ohio River seen to the east. Re-envisioned as a cultural gathering place for the Cincinnati metropolitan area, the institute functions primarily as an event center and is supported by a culinary education facility. Ground Floor

Vehicular circulation is driven below the complex and a landscaped plaza is constructed above, thereby concealing the loading docks and providing a completely pedestrian environment between the two buildings. Each building’s entry sequence includes a wide stair which pulls visitors away from the automotive environment, up to the pedestrian realm, and into sheltered entrances. These grand steps are also intended to act as a warm and public gathering place to complement the shaded, private exterior spaces to the north.

Taking one hundred similar objects and creating an interesting construct with one connective element was the goal of this assignment. Each of the three iterations had slightly different parameters. The architecture stretched along the crest of the site exists as a gradation of naturalism to formal intervention. Dissolving into a series of terraces and retaining walls in the west and ending in a crescendo of articulation in the east, the forms allows the event center to take the compositional focus. The educational building lies low when viewed from the south or west, but still provides expansive views to the north and a protected and private exterior space for its community of students and faculty.

[re]Energizing the Disillusioned This project began as an exploration of re-appropriation and copy/paste processes. Drawing sections of new york highrise designs, both iconic and proposed, contributed to an understanding of successful strategies and typologies. These sections were subsequently manipulated to create a new section indicative of intended spatial qualities and potential massing or programmatic zones. Remnants of the original constructs exist in the form of equations, barely seen in the lower left corner, but allowing for the Catia / Digital Project possible dissection of the Rapid Prototyping resulting composition. Loss of Hope

The previous section was simplified to create a pattern which could be reinterpreted three-dimensionally. This field of pods will respond to site and programmatic constraints, and can become less dense, allowing a second layer of units to be copied and nested in the z-axis, implied in the right portion of this seciton. Disclaimer: the text below simply serves as a means of constructing a client; it does not reflect my current personal sentiments or beliefs. I don’t understand what I’ve lost. I don’t understand who took it from me. I don’t want to know the cost Everybody plays a part, and this is your part, and why can’t you accept that? You’ve failed. It’s who you are. I am the last in a line of a long line of dreamers. Pray the day arrives that I can make some meaning of my troubles. For now I just accept that what is lost is lost forever. Even worse was making it through, only to relive the pain over and over. As the most educated generation, we experience the most extreme underemployment I distrust the society which conditioned me to follow in their footsteps.

But I have a dream today. Let freedom ring from the dizzying heights of Manhattan. If a man doesn’t have a dream or a vision, he has neither life nor liberty nor the possibility for the pursuit of happiness. He merely exists. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this city will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “something extraordinary would happen any minute, any day.”

New York’s dreamers have not yet found their foothold in Manhattan’s culture of work. They do, however, hold on to some of the city’s energized neurosis. With this, they create their own space. The lack of grounding manifests in a floating environment that inhabits the void above surface parking in Chelsea and explodes into the Hudson. This frenetic creation latches onto The High Line and pulls pedestrians through its tangential paths. As passersby wander atop the incubator, they gain views into the creative spaces below; the pods are occupied by cross-disciplinary collectives. One day, each group will have garnered the attention required to leave the incubator and will take its place among New York’s creative elite. In time the public will see that the dreamers have created a superior urban experience. As they walk along the street, New Yorkers will look up through the light wells and structural glass into the vibrant studios above and envy the energy of their inspired neighbors. The system’s final deployment was featured on SuckerPUNCH daily’s May 6, 2014 post “PseudoVertical”

The site becomes a sculpted, public zone for social interaction. Visitors slip under the folded slab to engage in the more programmed public spaces. The eastern entrance provides access to a retail space, while the southern entrance opens into the hotel lobby and lounge.

The wooded areas create spatial boundaries as well as visual masses on the site. Buildings carve into these masses while upholding the boundaries, thereby creating visually unobtrusive and environmentally conscious residences and studios.

Lynn Feasibility Study | KPF with Elie Gamburg

Providing views to the ocean from each residential unit drove the design of this multi-use development. The study also explores the successful urbanistic strategies of Boston and the ways in which these could be applied to create an inwardly focused but expandable housing development in Lynn, Massachusetts. Emphasis was placed on economic building strategies and real-estate market analysis of the Boston Metropolitan area. AutoCAD - Rhino - Illustrator 3dsMax - Photoshop

Beijing CBD Z3 | KPF with Elie Gamburg

This proposed office tower, located near Third Ring Road in Beijing, makes use of two wall types - a heavily textured, vertical system, and a contrastingly smooth, chamfered corner condition. After completing a bureaucratic review package, the team focused on lighting design, landscaping, and curtain wall detailing. Revit - Rhino - 3dsMax - Photoshop Perspectives by Crystal

Digital Landscapes with Maxine Midtbo

A cross-disciplinary studio taught in conjunction with the school of art brought architects and artists together to explore the intersection of film and space. This short film expresses ideas of spatial collage while also challenging the conventional conception of the screen. View the preliminary film by following the link below. Final films will be shown in an exhibition on April 17th. https://vimeo.com/90267056

Ecuador Photography After viewing a retrospective of Michael Kenna’s work I was inspired to create compositions with light and dark. On a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos in December of 2010, I was able to experiment with this style of photography. http://issuu.com/ben_hamilton/docs/ ecuador_portfolio

Red House to Bauhaus Fifteen architecture students were selected to chart the aesthetic development from the English Arts and Crafts movement to the height of Modernism. Visitting twelve countries, we were able to learn about architectural history and urban from firsthand. A few of the trip’s highlights are listed on the facing page.
