Mauritius Ecology Center

Heritage and Ecology Center for the Island of Mauritius Undergraduate – Spring 2022

The Ecology and Heritage Center is an adaptive reuse of a historic bunker called the marcello tower. The tower acts as the origin point from which the new construction extends. The design parallels the relationship between the Island of Mauritius and its coral reefs. The center wraps around a central courtyard that acts as an ecological refuge for local flora and fauna. The building makes use of regional materials such as bamboo and basalt stone blocks.

Stainability is a crucial element of this design. As such, the design incorporates passive cooling techniques, rainwater reclamation, daylighting, and a photovoltaic array. The center acts as a symbol of sustainable design and provides a place for future generations to learn about sustainable practices. History and cultural heritage is also of critical importance to this design. As such, the historic structures were integrated into the design.
