Teen Recommended Reads
Topic: Braille Use
World Braille Day
Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.
Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion.
Come into the library to complete the UNESCO Writing Peace braille page and learn more about how the written code came to be OR learn braille with our Lego Braille Bricks!
Each month, Teen Recommended Reads explores a central theme or topic of discussion. Teens are encouraged to find an age appropriate novel that shares this topic and discuss how this novel relates to the theme and general questions. In recognition of World Braille Day, we are choosing from books that allow readers to experience how other people live everyday for this month's Teen Recommended Reads. Choose a book from this theme and let us know what you think.
More information can be found at un.org/en/observances/braille-day We recommend
More book suggestions can be found at tinyurl.com/5bsx8634
Braille is not a language, but rather a code representing letters, numbers, and symbols. It can be used to write any language, including English, Spanish, French, and Chinese. DID YOU KNOW?
