Visitor Information Centre

Do you love meeting people? Have customer service experience? Want to share your local knowledge, not just of Benalla, but the surrounding region as well? Why not think about volunteering at the Visitor Information Centre. Our volunteers play an important role as ambassadors for our region, sharing their local knowledge and enthusiasm and helping visitors get the most out of their stay. Volunteers assist with visitor servicing, accommodation enquiries, as well as administration and sales and there are opportunities to participate in familiarisation tours and consumer shows.

Benalla Art Gallery

The Benalla Art Gallery is one of Australia’s premier regional art galleries renowned for its permanent art collection that spans three centuries of Australian art.

Offering public workshops, talks and events designed to bring art and people together, the Gallery attracts more than 75,000 exhibition visitors each year.

Gallery volunteers play a vital role assisting staff with administration and research, public programs, special events and social functions.

Cinema

Volunteering at Benalla’s Cinema is a great way to stay connected with film and screen culture, while also meeting like-minded movie enthusiasts.

Volunteering at Benalla’s Cinema includes assisting with front of house activities for film screenings; greeting patrons, collecting, and checking tickets; and assisting patrons with special seating requirements.

TAC L2P Learner Driver Program Mentors

The TAC L2P Program is a community-based program developed to assist young learner drivers who may have limited access to vehicles and supervising drivers. The program helps learner drivers gain their minimum of 120 hours of driving experience and to become safe and confident drivers.

Driver Mentors undertake training to confidently provide a minimum of one hour per week supervised driving with a young person using the L2P program vehicle.

Benalla Botanical Gardens

The heritage-listed Benalla Botanic Gardens and its iconic Rose Garden (first established in 1959), features more than 1,000 rose varieties.

Garden volunteers assist with a range of maintenance projects throughout the year, including meeting twice a week in the cooler months to ‘dead head’ the roses (removal of finished blooms).

Litter Gatherers

The Benalla Litter Prevention Program is a group of local volunteers who assist with rubbish collection, helping to keep Benalla beautiful.

Volunteers with Litter Gatherers give two hours per week or fortnight patrolling litter hotspots around Benalla.

While helping keep the town tidy, volunteers help provide a safer and cleaner environment, while enjoying fresh air, exercise, and community spirit.

Events and Festivals

If you’re keen to volunteer but cannot commit to regular activities, become an event volunteer, and help at our annual Benalla Festival in November or other Council-hosted civic and community-run events that need assistance throughout the year.

You will be part of a team helping in the leadup to events, making sure that these events run smoothly and that visitors have the best experience possible.

Youth Programs

Are you aged between 12 and 25 and interested in volunteering with youth programs and events?

We have a range of programs that passionate young volunteers can assist with, including FReeZA, Engage! and Live4Life Benalla. These programs give you the opportunity to organise events and activities for young people in the community like live music, skate park events, film nights and youth awards.

These programs are accessible and inclusive to all young people in the community.

Age Friendly Benalla

Council is committed to ensuring Benalla Rural City is an age-friendly community that supports older people to live safe, purposeful and healthy lives. Council’s Age Friendly Benalla Reference Group meets regularly to implement priorities from the Age Friendly Action Plan 2023-2025.

Accessibility Reference Group

Members of Benalla’s Accessibility Reference Group is a crucial voice for local access and inclusion priorities. The group meets every second month on a weekday to discuss current issues and progress actions and priorities to improve access and inclusion in the community.

Applying to volunteer is easy.

1. Fill out an application form online at www.benalla.vic.gov.au

2. Attend an interview.

3. Complete necessary background checks.

4. Attend an induction and sign the volunteer agreement.

5. Get started!

Volunteering and Centrelink payments

To be considered for Centrelink approval, volunteers must complete a Verification of Voluntary Work form to meet mutual obligation requirements.

All volunteers must have current background checks prior to starting and will undergo volunteer induction, with training and support provided.
