EDUARDO BENAMOR DUARTE (b. Lisbon 1975)

Education 2002 Master of Science in Advanced Architecture Design / Columbia University New York 1999 Bachelor of Architecture and Urban Design / Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa 1998 Facolta di Architettura / Politecnico di Milano

In 2009 I opened my studio Benamor Duarte Architecture in NY to focus on the design and production of objects, and spatial environments at large. Recent architecture, design and installation commissions, include group exhibitions at the Cite’ de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, Institut Francais d’Architecture in Paris, Salone Satellite - Milan Furniture Fair, Temporary Museum for New Design, and Made Expo in Milan; Wanted Design NY and Soho Digital Art Gallery in NY; Bienniale Design in Saint Etienne and Experimenta Design in Lisbon.

Several institutions such as the Ministério da Cultura de Portugal– Direcção Geral das Artes and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation have awarded my studio work. Recent projects have been published widely in a number of international architectural and design magazines and books such as AD France, AD Italia, Abitare, Domus Magazine, Ecologik, Interni, Elle Decor, Frame or Vogue Italia, or the publishing houses Gestalten and Links Books. My work is focused on design methods that combine the recurrent proliferation of digital design generative processes with a disciplinary body of knowledge. For a long time I have been interested in geometry as form, in many versions and always in its most abstract content such a drawing or in any procedure that enables the making and adaptation of form and space: From the repetition of a limited number of abstract procedures in a systematic mode; testing the capacity of a flexible configuration to be adaptable in any location; altering the material properties of a spatial element driven by users’ interaction; or by physically constructing the prefiguration or transformation of a spatial typology. Current on-going projects span the contexts of domestic and public space in constructs ranging from the production of ceramic block stacking structures to alternative energy systems in the design of Darrieus landscape Wind turbines. Since 2011 I am an Assistant Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design where I lead courses on topics engaging adaptive environments in public and domestic space through spatial installations and prototypes or computation and theory seminars in the Department of Interior Architecture.

RAPIGATTOLI

Chair Limited Edition Photography: Pedro Bettencourt

Rapigattoli Birch Plywood 450mm x 650mm x 600mm

Rapigattoli chair is an original design aiming to investigate the idea of adaptation and scale by transposing on the registers of the figurative and geometry drawing techniques on the materiality of a chair. Rapigattoli chair is generated from a single profile configuration encasing the seat and back, the primal profile is arrayed along the perimeter of a circumference creating the necessary surface for use. Four legs are added strategically by mirroring the first profile 45 cm above the floor. Rapigattoli chair’s plywood flexion and rib structure enhances the chair softness and lightness while changing the framing of the surrounding space: A new type of transparency is constantly created while the perception of amount of surface material is permanently altered.

FIJIJI BLOCKS

Vase / Installation

Fijiji Blocks Author in collaboration with Larry Bush

FIJIJI blocks is an installation featuring the stacking of octahedral ceramic polygons vases. Fijij blocks are born out the passion for geometry interpolations. They’re use can be limitless. The exploration of the technique of Ceramics Slipcasting , commonly used in the mass-production of pottery ,required the production of a series of plaster moulds for the pouring of liquid clay on their inside. The forming of the cast layer, drying and consequent coloring and firing searches to create objects and spaces engaging the passion for abstract geometrical repetitive processes and the hand manufactured material processing.

FIJIJI vase: A ceramic accessory for a single flower. A vase born out from the passion for descriptive geometry interpolations and the tradition of porcelain slip casting: A process driven from the slow transformation of a circle into a tridimensional octahedral polygon cast in a single porcelain form. The 16-face porcelain vase is the first prototype from a series of objects revisiting elementary ceramic manufacturing processes and the generation of form supported by a grant from the Rhode Island School of Design.

TACTILE STARS

Kinectic Wall Paper Educational project at the Rhode Island School of Design Photography: Andrew Filmore

Tactile Stars Professor Rhode Island School of Design Laser cut acrylic, rivets and suction cups Salone Satellite, Milan Furniture Fair

The piece is three-dimensional wallpaper exhibited at the Salone Satellite, Furniture Fair designed in the Graduate studio I taught at RISD. The students, Aarti Kathuria & Srikirti Sreedhar designed a piece that could be applied to a blank wall, a blank glass or hung in space to change the visual rhythm of the space. Process of exploration involved abstracting the five points of the five petals of a block fan into a pentagon and applying the process of fractal growth to the pentagon.

PORCUPINE

Bench for Hotel Lobby Limited Edition Photography: Sebastiano Pellion

Porcupine Author In collaboration with Caterina Tiazzoldi Studio Porcupine is an abstract adaptable chair inspired from the fractal growth of a shell. Realized with felt and fiber glass, the design for the porcupine seat is processed through the iteration and transformation of a common seat component. In response the warmth and malleability of the felt produces a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers. These fibers are produced by recycled residual waste processed in a sustainable manner into felt. Generating it with a parametric logic allows for reconfiguration in accordance with the user’s inputs and location. Customers can control the form, the level of proximity between the different seat and height modulation. This Porcupine, commissioned by the design Biennal Experimenta Design, is realized with 40 sheets of felt realized by Pastofo, supported by a fiber glass skeleton realized by Polotrifa. The sheet’s height varies from 68 to 30 cm while their spacing shifts according to the pressure of the body’s weight or the proximity of a group of sheets.

LIC

Chair Limited Edition Photography: Pedro Bettencourt

LIC Laser cut steel, 490mm x 650mm x 600mm Digital fabrication: João Monteiro & Filhos Support by: Ministério da Cultura – Direcção Geral das Artes – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – João Monteiro & Filhos – Caixa Geral de Depósitos LIC chair is designed from a two-dimensional profile that minimizes surface area required for support. This steel profile is constituted as a unit of construction to be laced and multiplied by the geometric operations of copy and rotation around a vertical axis. LIC chair´s 90º degree (seat and back) relation between each rotation axis for the construction units´ assemblage is oriented perpendicular to its pressure points: altering the relationship between volume, density and weight in constant counterpoint to the visual perception of space in which is viewed from. LIC chair is fabricated from 108 construction units in steel laser cut through a computer control numeric machine, and aggregated according to a disposition determined by equilibrium between the points of strength and flexibility in adaptation to body weight.

ERMELINDA

Chair Limited Edition Photography: Pedro Bettencourt

Ermilinda Multiple colors, Fiberglass, 450mm x 92mm x 650mm CNC Fabrication: Norcam Fiberglass Prototype: Poliexport Support by: Ministério da Cultura – Direcção Geral das Artes – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – Caixa Geral de Depósitos Ermelinda chair is a fiberglass double surface resulting from a structural skinning adapted to the weight of the beholder: morphing the copy, translation and scale of a single closed profile encasing seat and back; generating simultaneously surface and vacuum. Ermelinda chair’s volume stresses the performative efficiency of the object, enhanced by the impact of the user as a form factor generator: extracting mass from the body adaptation to a seating surface, and the minimum support to balance its weight. Ermelinda chair’s complex surface curvature is developed in an iterative process, through the application of advanced digital design and manufacturing tools in a two phase fabrication: an initial prototype cut by a robotic hardware numerical machine and a final mould in fiber glass.

SWIRLS IN TRANSITION

Installation Educational Project at the Rhode Island School of Design

Swirls in Transition Installation Educational project at the Rhode Island School of Design This installation is part of the Layered Worlds project, a three-month long educational project confronting the incorporation of the Palรกcio Pombal conservational constrains with the spatial dynamics of CDAP community. Swirls in transition was constructed during week-long residency program at Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa where 6 RISD Grad Students constructed Micro Architectures in context. Swirls in transition was designed by the graduate student Harshitaa Mocherla inspired from nature and derived from the Baroque patterns seen in the tile work and stucco existing in the Palace. The swirls are constructed in paper and are clustered together and scattered across the space inviting visitors to view a contrast between artificially created nature against a real one.

[IN LIGHT] [IN HABIT] [IN FLUX]

Ceiling / Installation Educational project at the Rhode Island School of Design Photography: Ernesto Aparicio

[In Light] [In Habit] [In Flux] Co-Intructor with Liliane Wong and Lee Boronson The monumental technical textile intervention to the National Landmark Newport Congregational Church is the result of the work produced by the Interior Architecture MA class of 2013 in a cross disciplinary studio co-taught by myself, Liliane Wong (Professor, Interior Architecture) and Lee Boroson (Senior Critic, Sculpture), This work was a funded investigation into the concept of “soft interventions” in which adaptive reuse brings new meaning and new use to existing structures through non-invasive means, as mandated by the Standards of the US Department of the Interior. The project was uninstalled without a trace from Newport and reinstalled at the National Academy during the show, “Projects in Contemporary Art and Architecture: Between Vision and Function,” .
