B en B ailey Hello!
Education
Technical Skills
I'm Ben Bailey, artist, lover of the outdoors, builder, and urban planner in training. I am extremely passionate about what I do and carry that throughout all aspects of my life. I am lucky enough to have a great deal of experience in landscaping, contracting, physical labor, and hand building. I've worked all of my life, from nannying children to interior demolition all the way to operating heavy machinery. My interests in planning are public transit, horticulture, historic preservation and urban design. Everyday, everywhere I go, I have planning on my mind. Frankly, the state of our world and its physical built enviroment concerns me a lot. There is much work to be done, but I believe we can accomplish what we want with the proper planning. I am here to be a part of that future.

Walnut Hills Neighborhood Inventory The Walnut Hills neighborhood inventory was a semester long, comprehensive look at the historic Cincinnati neighborhood, Walnut Hills. Many site visits, interviews and census data were taken into account during the semester long look at Cincinnati's first suburb. The work shown displays a variety of reasearch including cenus data, historic something,. The entirety of this project was done with a group of three, which collaborated very effectively and improved greatly on consistent graphic work.

Data Indicators This assignment was to explore different types of census data and use it to create an interesting graphical representation. Walnut Hills is a historically valuable neighborhood that faced a lot of urban decay and blight. I created these two graphics to be a part of a larger group poster. I looked at data regarding occupancy rates and tenure, as well as the change in racial makeup over time in Walnut HIlls.

Issues & Visions We as agroup were asked to identify numerous problems and their solutions in the neighborhood. The posters displayed were presented by my group, I contributed greatly upon the graphical representation and concepts displayed.

History Timeline The history timeline was created after investigating the historic backround of our nieghborhood. I believed Walnut Hills rich past was best represented in a dynamic colorful way. I created this timeline with a few elements supplied by my groupmates. I enjoyed the play on perspective in this graphic very much and used it as a jumping point for some future projects.

Postcard I was asked to create a postcard embodying the the character and essence of the nieghborhood. I spent a good amount of time driving around Walnut Hills at all times of the day, observing the physical characteristics and visual appeal. One night the scene of a dark street, illuminated by only a few spotty lights struck me.

Elevations The elevations I created were a part of exploring the neighborhood typologies. We identified multiple districts of Walnut Hills that were defined by different characteristics seen in each of these three areas. Block density, layout, age, market value, and social factors were all taken into consideration when defining said districts. East Mcmillan Street

Farmhouse Table
The farmhouse table has always been a daydream of mine. It wasnt until this summer that I got the chance to finally build it. The wood was in extremely rough condition when I aquired it, containing many splits and imperfections that I chose to carve and smooth. The rough cut, southern pine previously functioned as the floor joist in an 1860's home built on the side of a cliff. In true utilitarian fashion, it is now used for eating, studying, reading, and playing cards.

Topographic Painting Study
For this project I was assigned a painting to interpret and inspire a topographic landscape model. I was assigned "Speed and Sound" by Giacomo Balla, which is full of interesting lines, shapes and color waves. In the process of creating my imaginary landscape, I was very influenced by the intense red curves and cool blue undertones. In the end, the model I created emulates the site at Red River Gorge on which I camped over the summer. The proccess began with different sketches and ideations of the landscape I imagined. The image was cropped and rotated one hundred and eighty degrees.

Land Suitability Study
In the graphic informations systems course, our final project was the topic of land suitability analysis. I have always been very interested in what community gardening and foodsharing can do for a neighborhood. I chose five indicators all together to determine the most hospitable locations in Hamilton County for a community garden. I believe areas close to highway exits are too noisy and busy for gardens. They are most neccesary in dense urban neighborhoods, close to schools for youth outreach and exposure. Lastly, lower income communities with high vacancys are in need of the benefits community gardens offer most.

Writing Sample This is an introduction to a research paper I wrote for an english course my first year of college. The paper was a look into the past, present and future of the Cincinnati streetcar.
Cities are formed by three basic principals. The first is an economic base, second is a form of government and the last, my personal favorite, is transportation. If a population doesn’t have affordable, accessible public transit the city will neither function properly nor expand. If municipalities are not actively investing and working to improve their transit networks, they will regret it in the future. These principals function as a three legged stool, if one leg is weak the other two will not be able to support the stool properly. Each leg is equally as important as the other two. Historically in America there have been many rises and falls our transit systems, and more recently there has been an increased emphasis on systems like light and high speed rail. These changing systems have greatly affected our country all the way down to the neighborhood level, and have a great impact on the future. 14
Site Inventory-History
This semester my studio was lucky enough to establish a connection with an actual client. We, as a studio, were asked to create a site invetory for their organization. I created this graphic independently to illustrate their rich history in the context of their neighborhood. .
