about me: My name is Ben Basaran. I recently graduated with a master of landscape architecture degree at the University of Minnesota. My undergraduate degree was completed at Purdue University where I graduated with a bachelor of science in landscape architecture. I also spent nearly a year working as a landscape architect intern with the Purdue University Office of the University Architect. Landscape architecture excites me because it is constantly looking at new issues ranging from public health to climate change. I am always trying to grow my base of knowledge and learn new things in the field, whether it be new programs to visualize my designs, sketching, or reading the latest literature. Thank you for taking the time to read through my portfolio.

activate penn The concept for this project was to use the bus rapid transit investment to create a place for healthy living and community building along the Penn Avenue corridor and this could act as a catalyst for the rest of North Minneapolis. The approach was to design 3 different sites along this corridor to accomplish these goals. The sites will design for fitness and recreation (play), for job growth and education (grow) as well as a civic space that will foster creativity, collaboration and gathering.(activate)

internship work From 2010 to 2011 I spent 10 months working for the Purdue University Office of the University Architect as a landscape architect intern. During this time, I worked on numerous projects that ranged from planning to site scale projects. The final project to emerge from my Purdue internship culminated in the stadium mall crosswalks. I chose to present this project because I was designated as the lead designer. The objective of this project was to follow the program identified on the Purdue University master plan. The goal was to design a space which created nodes of seating areas and bike parking along a major pedestrian corridor on the campus of Purdue University. paver layout plan

move north North Minneapolis is an underserved urban area just outside of downtown Minneapolis. Plans are in effect to bring a light rail to this community and connect it to the rest of Minneapolis. My proposal was to create a transit village on existing city owned vacant lots. The site would be an active, retail lined corridor to serve the community. The design also included pedestrian streets and plazas for community gathering as well as mixedincome housing. process sketch

duluth Duluth, Minnesota is a rust belt port city located on Lake Superior. Many of the former great rust belt cities have had their economies fail after businesses leave. Duluth was no different, but they decided to invest their time into rebranding the city into an active city. The beginning studio focused on finding our specific interests in Duluth, whether that be recreation or re-use of dredged material from the shipping channel. Morgan park is a small city in the Duluth metro; it was formerly a planned model city for US Steel. After US Steel left Morgan Park the city fell on hard times, with many businesses leaving the city. The goal of this project was to create a ‘model city 2.0,’ bringing back services and creating Morgan Park into a walkable vibrant community with a grocery store, community garden and a community lawn space as well as a redesign for recreation opportunities along the riverfront.
