The photographs in this portfolio were taken during my time studying abroad and traveling throughout Sri Lanka in the spring of 2013 and over the past six years I’ve studied, lived, and worked in Maine. You will see elephants and dragonflies, stunning New England autumn foliage, a moth which mimics a wasp, and the famous lotus flower (see if you can spot the frog in the lotus picture!). I was fortunate to be able to travel around Sri Lanka while studying Buddhism and sustainability with the ISLE program and to work on a fully organic dairy and papaya farm for my independent study. Visiting Sri Lanka proved to be a transformative experience and shifted my frame of reference for the levels of biodiversity I thought possible, given New England was all I had known. Photographs in Maine arise from a summer internship I held with the Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission between my junior and senior years at Bates College and from the two consecutive summers I lived and worked on Cliff Island, a beautiful rocky island in Casco Bay.
I took these photographs for a variety of reasons. Some were quickly snapped to share a glimpse of beauty with friends and family while for others, I patiently waited to capture the perfect moment. I don’t intend to send any message or statement with my photographs, rather, for me, photography has become a means to capture and convey the beauty I see in the natural world.
Landscapes, wildlife, and plants have evolved over millennia to take the form they currently do while us humans are fortunate enough to find beauty and take pleasure in these forms. This is my attempt to convey the beauty which I see in the world.
The last two slides are informational posters I’ve made in the past few years—one for my senior thesis and the other for my job on Cliff Island, Maine. I paid close attention to spacing, color, and format in order to make the posters visually appealing and easy to read. *Photo annotation key: Title. Location. Date. Camera.
