INDEPENDENT WOMEN FOR INDEPENDENT FILM
THE INDIEWOMEN MOVEMENT STARTED OUT AS 100 WOMEN DONATING $100 TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FILM AND CONTINUES TO GROW.
Independent Women for Independent Film was formed as a way to strengthen the bonds of leading women in the arts and business and support female indie flmmakers at the BendFilm Festival. Today, the IndieWomen movement—100 women donating $100— continues to grow and expand its support for female flmmakers.

Created in honor of the late Pamela Hulse Andrews, a pioneer of arts and culture in Bend, the IndieWoman of the Year Award carries on Pamela’s legacy. The award is presented annually to a female flmmaker who demonstrates an exceptional passion for independent flm, bravely shares their authentic voice, and makes extraordinary contributions to an independent body of work.

Julia in its world premiere during the Local Focus Narrative Shorts program (page 60).
“When I wrote my frst short flm Julia
, the idea of fully producing the flm seemed impossible. Receiving the Tell Your Story grant through Oregon Made Creative Foundation enabled Julia to launch into pre-production and fnally allowed me to tell my mother’s story of hardship growing up in a South Korean orphanage. After flming, I received BendFilm’s BIPOC Women Film Production Grant, which provided the funding we needed to fnish up post-production. Making this flm would not have been possible without these grants. I’m so thankful for the support I’ve been given to amplify underrepresented voices, and think it is crucial to uplift other flmmakers to do the same through flm grants.”
Grant Panel
This year, fve to ten fnal candidates will pitch their projects live to a panel of industry professionals during the Festival. The panel will decide the winner of the $10,000 production grant and may provide mentorship during the flmmaking process at panelists’ discretion and interest. Find more information about the grant and application process at BENDFILM.ORG
In 2022, BendFilm is proud to present the award to Academy Award-nominated writer and director Tamara Jenkins.

We are what we believe. This was at the heart of the company we built over 50 years ago, and still guides us today. Over the years, we’ve taken great care to bring thoughtful design, forward thinking and environmentally sensitive strategies to the neighborhoods we’ve developed. So that they are more than just a collection of homes. They are communities. It was our vision then, and it’s our vision for the future of Central Oregon. We believe in community. | brooksresources.com
B ENDFILMS IS PROUD TO SPOTLIGHT ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED WRITER AND DIRECTOR TAMARA JENKINS AS THE 2022 INDIEWOMAN OF THE YEAR.
Tamara Jenkins is a rare flmmaker who has a knack for fnding a balance of humor and desperation in characters we instantly warm to. We always feel personally comforted by the fact that her characters exist in this world, and that Jenkins exists in today’s world of indie flmmaking despite working with stars like Laura Linney, Natasha Lyonne, Alan Arkin, Kathryn Hahn, Paul Giamatti, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. For her uncompromisingly independent attitude to flmmaking and ongoing inspiration to us all, we’re honored to name Tamara Jenkins IndieWoman of the Year.
Tamara is the writer and director of the flms Private Life,
The Savages, and
Slums of Beverly Hills as well as several award winning shorts. Her flms have screened at the New York Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, Cannes, and Sundance. Among the honors she has received are an Academy Award nomination, an Independent Spirit Award, a Los Angeles Film Critics prize, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Tamara attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received her MFA and met her husband, the screenwriter, Jim Taylor, with whom she occasionally writes. Jenkins lives in NYC with Jim and their daughter, Mia.
“[Tamara Jenkins’] microscopic looks at human beings in all their complexities and vanities are vital to the cinematic landscape. Her stories are not didactic. They are observational and communal—a hug, not a fnger-point. She is scrupulous not just with the female character closest in age to her; Jenkins takes years to write a script because she wants to walk in the shoes of every character until she gets them right. (As Philip Seymour Hoffman, Linney’s costar in The Savages, once said, Jenkins is ‘not a compromiser.’)”
