Vice President’s Message On behalf of Bendigo Theatre Company, I would like to welcome you to our production of “The Boy from Oz”. Giving an insight to the life and love of famed Australian performer Peter Allen, “The Boy from Oz” follows his dazzling career and features phenomenal music and songs which will leave you with your toes tapping for weeks to come. More importantly, the show also provides a vital message to audiences. The script explores themes of love, tolerance and acceptance – values which are plentiful throughout the storyline, critical and yet (at times) rare, in today’s society. Bendigo Theatre Company would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person involved in making this production a reality. To our musicians, set/costume construction teams and backstage crew – we thank you for your tireless efforts. Thank you to our cast, our incredible BTC family, who have given over three months of their lives to telling this important story. To my fellow committee members: Alicia Barker, Kristen Beever, Gael Emond, Maureen Fleiner, Loretta Kingston-Brown, Charlie Munday, John Murray, Trella O’Loughlin, Stania Tresize and Vern Wall. While the work you do is not always seen by everyone, it is integral and valued. Of course, a special thank you must be given to our inimitable creative team: John Murray, Cynthia Holsworth and Shantelle Rathbone, who have had the drive, patience, expertise and vision to skilfully and cohesively work to successfully mould the spectacle you are about to witness. Finally, we would like to thank you, our audience for your continued support and patronage – it is you, that allow us to do what we do. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy “The Boy from Oz”, we hope you love it as much as we do. Abe Watson Vice President Bendigo Theatre Company
BTC Patron’s Message I have fond memories of watching Peter Allen on stage, and he will forever go down as one of Australia’s most successful performers. His story is one of heartache, triumph, and success, and I am so pleased that we get to share his incredible biography with Bendigo audiences and the beautiful Capital Theatre. An enormous amount of time has gone into preparing this wonderful show and I take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of everyone involved. So a big ‘well done’ to the behind the scenes crew who in the lead up to and during the production have and will work hard to ensure that the performers can take to the stage to give and look their best. Congratulations to the costume and set designers and builders; make-up artists and hair dressers; sound and lighting technicians; the orchestra; the backstage production crew and props; choreography and dance teachers and the publicity team – you are all a crucial part of the production. Thanks also to friends and family who help out the cast and crew and provide much needed support. All of these people play an important role in the production of any theatrical work and all deserve our thanks and congratulations. Finally, I want to thank all of the performers who will share their amazing talent and allow us to escape our normal lives for a few hours to enjoy some fantastic music and dancing. I hope everyone enjoys this terrific production of the ‘The Boy From Oz’ by the Bendigo Theatre Company. Cr Rod Fyffe Patron Bendigo Theatre Company
THE CREATIVE TEAM
Director John Murray
As well as teaching drama, John has been involved with theatre for nearly 30 years. John’s background covers a broad spectrum of theatre, including professional, community, school and travelling productions. John debuted at Bendigo Theatre Company in 2005 with a trilogy of successive plays; ‘The Old Selection’, ‘The Real Inspector Hound’ and ‘Cahoots Macbeth’. He directed ‘Into the Woods’ (2006), ‘Les Miserables’ (2008), ‘Inheritance (2009), ‘Don’s Party’ (2010), ‘The Removalists’ (2011) and ‘Chicago’ (2014). As President of BTC in 2016, John is excited to lead the company into another season of theatre. He especially looks forward to discovering more of the exceptional emerging talent in Bendigo. John works with the Academy of Creative Arts team at Bendigo South East College, and is currently directing the BSE 2016 production of ‘Beauty and the Beast.
Musical Director Cynthia Holsworth
The theatre is Cynthia’s second home, where she has played in countless orchestras, led many school productions and performed on the stage since her first role at 7 years of age in BTC’s production of ‘The Kings and I’. Her passion for theatre and music has extended to a professional career as a teacher, musician and her current role as manager of the Academy of Creative Arts (ACA) at Bendigo South East College. Cynthia is a busy working mum and didn’t really have time for this show but the amazing persuasive powers of John Murray won her over eventually. Cynthia has thoroughly enjoyed working with a new team to present this rousing musical journey for the enjoyment of our audiences. She is immensely proud to take her position once again in the best seat in the house and lead another fabulous cast and talented orchestra. ‘The Boy from Oz’ takes pride of place for 2016 in Cynthia’s list of Musical Director credits which include ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Into the Woods’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Chicago’ and the highlight of 2015, ‘Mary Poppins’, where she proudly supported her youngest son Oliver as he starred as ‘Michael’ in the classic and magical tale.
THE Choreographer Shantelle Rathbone
Shantelle grew up with a passion for dance. Training as a child in Bendigo under the guidance of her mother, she then continued in Melbourne completing her Teaching Diploma at the age of 18. Shantelle has been teaching and sharing her love of dance ever since. Opening up her own dance studio, ‘Start Studio’, in 2013, Shantelle continues to work alongside her mother, Julie Ackland and sister, Tiffany, along with a fabulous team of dedicated teachers. As a child, Shantelle loved the community theatre environment, enjoying roles in ‘Sound of Music’, ‘Hans Christian Anderson’ and ‘Babes in Toyland’. Recently, she had the opportunity to work with BTC in their ‘Kid’s Christmas Concert’. Shantelle is thrilled to be working with this talented cast and wonderful production team, in ‘The Boy From Oz‘. She would like to thank her teachers at Start Studio, for their support and dedication to the Studio, allowing her the time to take on this role as choreographer. She would also like to thank her students, who are always such a joy and inspiration, and her beautiful family at home, Robbie and Ava, for all their support and encouragement to follow her passion of dance.
MAN PETER ALLEN played by Jason McMurray
Originally from the A.C.T, Jason made his stage debut at age eleven in a local production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. After relocating to Bendigo at fifteen, Jason was awarded ‘Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role’ by The Music Theatre Guild of Victoria for his portrayal of ‘Amos Hart’ in BCT’s ‘Chicago’. He studied VET Dance through Bendigo Senior Secondary College, and continued to perform in dance showcases throughout Victoria including the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and locally through Zfit Studios where he was formerly a cabaret and couples pole dance instructor. He was lucky enough to be selected for a musical theatre grant in 2004 which allowed him to study stage craft and performance technique with some of VCA’s top lecturers, which put him on the path as a vocal/ performance coach. Jason has continued being challenged by his roles in productions such as ‘Les Miserables’, ‘The Mikado’, ‘Call Me Madam’, ‘Cats’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum’, ‘Oklahoma!’, ‘Annie’, ‘Chicago’, Gary LeJeune in ‘Noises Off’, Valentine in ‘Mary Poppins’, Jeffrey Bowen in an independent production of ‘[title of show]’ and most recently showcasing his talents onstage and off in ‘The Addams Family’ as the charming Gomez Addams, and kooky costume designer. Now, he turns his attention to the fabulously talented ‘song-n-dance’ man, Mr Peter Allen. He is loving the challenge of bringing this larger than life Aussie icon to life. “This is literally a dream come true for me and I love that I get the chance to share this experience with the most supportive group of creatives I’ve had the pleasure of working with,”.
THE
LIZA MINNELLI played by Saari Frochot-Ryan
With Bendigo Theatre Company, you might remember Saari as Velma in ‘Chicago’ or Brooke in ‘Noises Off’. She also played Lucy in ‘Avenue Q’ for Three’s A Crowd, for which she was commended by the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria. In addition to this she has played many roles with CT Productions – Adelaide in ‘Guys and Dolls’ being her favourite. Outside of Musical Theatre Saari has performed as an international guest artist with her Burlesque work in Paris at La Manufacture. She is also the owner of Z Fit Studios, a local dance and fitness community. Saari’s first solo vocal performance was back in high school whilst studying the film ‘Cabaret’. As an assessment task she sang ‘Maybe this Time’ in the style of Liza Minnelli for her teachers and peers. She remembers being afraid of how much volume she could produce, and visiting her elderly neighbor to practice performing the song, and also to gain confidence from her kind words after each performance. Saari loved singing for Patsy, and Patsy loved to listen. With this fond memory, Saari dedicates her performance to the memory of her now deceased neighbour, Patsy Kane, who became like a grandmother to Saari over the years.
STARS
JUDY GARLAND played by Kerry Lorenz
As a young baby, Kerry would quietly sleep in her bassinet in the wings while her father, Ferdi Lorenz would rehearse on this very stage. It is no wonder that the theatrical life and The Capital Theatre would call her back. And so, after 52 years, Kerry has finally come home to perform the role of a lifetime….Judy Garland. Kerry began performing at the age of 5, beside her father in the Production of ‘The King & I’. and decided at the age of 13 that “the stage” was her career of choice. Kerry then entered The Melba Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne, attaining AMEB Honours in Theory and Associate Teaching in Singing. In between classes she worked in TV and Radio and travelled with a Music Hall Theatre Company, singing and dancing her way around the country. Kerry then went on to full-time employment with Tikki+Johns and Draculas Cabaret as a singer/ comedienne for many years. Looking for a change of scenery, she bid ‘Bon Voyage’ and set off on the high seas, working as a Social and Assistant Cruise Director and Entertainer. And now Kerry finds herself, once again, under these old and familiar stage lights.

Amy McMillan

Laura’s love of performing saw her take to the stage at an early age. She has studied dancing and singing for many years, as well as acting with The National Institute of Dramatic Art.

Her proudest achievement would be winning CCB’s 2015 Musician of the Year, and Audience Award. MARION WOOLNOUGH
Macklin Wellard is 15 years of age and is performing in his first BTC production. However, he was ‘discovered’ in the background of his sister’s dance lesson at the age of 5, and has been on stage in theatrical dance competitions ever since. Macklin takes lessons in Tap, Jazz Ballet, Classical Ballet, Musical Theatre and Acro at Start Studio in Bendigo, and attends Year 9 at Eaglehawk S. C, where he played Emmett in ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’. Macklin also plays Trombone with the Eaglehawk Brass Band, Bendigo Youth Brass, Bendigo Colleges Symphonic Band and the Victorian State Youth Brass Band, as well as being an avid soccer player with Epsom. He would like to thank everyone at BTC for the chance to be a part of this show, and also his dance teachers Shantelle Rathbone, Julie Ackland and Claire Sexton for their amazing direction and unending support.
Kristie’s love of singing has seen her involved in several choirs and musical productions since attending Kilvington Grammar School, where she received a year of classical voice training and achieved excellent results in Solo Performance: Voice. Her musical theatre performances include ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Carousel’ , ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Chess’ and ‘Mary Poppins’. As a former chorister of the Australian Girls’ Choir and Monash University’s Viva Voce, Kristie values her experiences as a member of large vocal ensembles and is currently singing with the Gisborne Singers, who are preparing for their upcoming performance in Carnegie Hall, New York City. Kristie will also be performing in Victorian Opera’s production of ‘The Pied Piper’ in November. Kristie is a classroom teacher of Science, Drama and Music and has directed two school productions; ‘Peter Pan Jr.’ and ‘Aladdin Jr.’. She most enjoys her time as a private singing teacher. ‘The Boy from Oz’ marks Kristie’s debut performance in a lead role and she is thrilled to be performing alongside such a talented cast. Kristie is eternally grateful to her husband, Craig, whose never-ending love and support has enabled her to “live the dream”.

THE CAST
Kristie Woodward
GREG CONNELL
CHRIS BELL
Paul Waldron
Charlie Munday
After a long hiatus from acting, Paul returned to theatre in 2014 as the three-foot puppet of Princeton in ‘Avenue Q’. From there it was Bert in BTC’s ‘Mary Poppins’ 2015, a mute dwarf in the pantomime ‘Snow White’ in January, the Polish immigrant Leon Czolgosz in ‘Assasins’ in April and now Greg Connell. Each role has come with a new challenge and different connections with other characters: a drunken love with a monster, a timeless platonic love with Mary, an infatuating love with Snow, a deluded love of a Russian anarchist and now a deep unending love of Peter Allen. Paul aspires truth in both his real life friendships and in his theatrical performances. Ego vere amo te (I honestly love you).
Charlie’s passion for theatre has led him to enjoy shows such as ‘Annie’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘The Music Man’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Shrek: The Musical’ and ‘The Addams Family’ to name a few. Recently, Charlie received a scholarship from the American Musical & Dramatic Academy to study a BFA in Musical Theatre in New York City beginning the week after ‘The Boy From Oz’. After 6 years with BTC, sadly, he is saying farewell to many incredible shows, friends and memories. He extends his deepest gratitude to friends and family who have always supported and nurtured his ambition for theatre.

Sally Long
Performing in Bendigo Theatre Company’s recent production of ‘The Addams Family’ was a watershed moment for Steve. The opportunity to be involved with another Bendigo Theatre Company production was an opportunity too good to be missed. Steve is delighted to be back on stage with yet another passionate, talented and fun-loving cast in ‘The Boy From Oz’.
A passionate love of theatre and dance led to Sally’s first involvement with BTC as ‘Cinderella’ in 1989. Since then she has been fortunate to return to stage to participate in a wide variety of shows with BTC and CT Productions. Her favourites include Guinevere in ‘Camelot’, Hodel in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, and Sarah Brown in ‘Guys and Dolls’. Ben’s other passion is guitar and heavy metal music. She feels it has been a privilege to spend time getting to know and understand more about this incredible entertainer, Peter Allen. “It’s not a particularly complex story, but the messages are profound chase your dreams, anything is possible, love who you love, live life to the full, and perhaps most importantly of all, get on the phone and call your mum!”.
