WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to BTC’s production of Wicked;
we are incredibly proud of this production. Wicked successfully pays reverence to a beloved story, while also challenging the public’s perception of it: what does it mean to be ‘good’ or ‘wicked’? In an eloquent examination of societal division and perpetrated by a corrupt government, this story reminds us that divisions are alive and well in our society. In an age dominated by ‘fake news’, this show has never felt more relevant. The time and resources it takes to mount a production such as Wicked should not be underestimated. It takes hundreds of people, and thousands of volunteer hours in all areas of production, construction, and administration. It is important to acknowledge this work because it is often unseen. Congratulations also to the entire cast — you are exceptional, and your passion and talent takes my breath away every time I walk into the rehearsal room. On a personal note, this production has occupied the majority of my time for over 12 months. I was appointed Production Manager in late 2018, and was tasked with the responsibility of bringing this show (the largest we have produced) to fruition.
I am so proud of what we have achieved together. I am particularly thankful to Ken Wells and Jenni Clohesy who have been instrumental in making this production a success. I am so grateful to have been on this ride with you both. Thank you. A special thank you to the BTC Committee for your commitment to positive leadership of this vibrant company; your knowledge, dedication, and generosity is truly admirable. To our wonderful creative team — Paul, Matt, Kristie, Lisa — your commitment to excellence and your passion for this project has been astounding. Thank you for your time, skill, and dedication. I hope you are as proud of this show as I am. Finally, I would like to thank you — our audience — for your continuous support and patronage. Sit back, relax, and enjoy Wicked; this is one you won’t forget anytime soon. Abe Watson Production Manager President, Bendigo Theatre Company
DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to Wicked!
Thank you for your ‘wonderful’ support. When I was approached to direct a regional Wicked, far, far away... I wanted to create something extra special. I focussed on not re-creating Broadway here. I was fortunate to sit next to Tony Award winning Director, John Tiffany and watch Wicked, we shared what we would change and twist, elements that we’d love to explore and what we felt the core was. I’ve had fun exploring this production and must thank cast and creatives, collectively, for buying-in and allowing us the ‘courage’ to find ‘Our Wicked!’. Witch hunters, animal oppression, character growth, time-line switches, protagonist handballing, pace, flow, choreography, underscore, staging, traffic organics have all been focussed on... There is a lot of ‘heart’ here I’m excited to share. The show is political and dark, which is such a juxtaposition to its ‘family-friendly’ delivery. Morality plays often are. The show and it’s characters are all about juxtaposition. What we think is wicked, is correct, at least morally. Popularity stems from bullying, delicateness creates wickedness and the celebrated breed corruption! Adapted for stage from Gregory Maguire’s novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch...’, a text based on the question ‘Are people
born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?’ The story goes that instead of writing another book on current or historical political world villains, Macguire surveyed Americans asking “Who is the most ‘popular’ villain?” the overwhelming response was The Wicked Witch! Oh America! So the Wizard Of Oz became a vehicle for a contemporary discussion on modern political themes such as discrimination, oppression, intolerance, corruption, racism, bullying, greed, elitism through to friendship, family, morality, education, freedom, acceptance, truth... it’s heavier than just lions, tigers and bears... Oh my!!! We set about stylising the show differently. Aesthetically, Wicked sits in Steam-Punk patterns which lends itself to the Victorian era. We’ve pushed it towards a Machine Age/Mid-West. Baum published The Wizard Of Oz in 1900 and the references to the Mid-West are many. It’s a slight twist to honour the original. I hope you enjoy! It’s an honour to pilot this balloon, floating through weather changes; to hopefully touch down gently in Bendigo with a suitcase full of green glasses! Paul Watson Director
SYNOPSIS ACT 1 The citizens of Oz are celebrating the death of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. As Glinda the Good appears to reassure the people that goodness has prevailed over evil, she admits that she and Elphaba were once friends, and tells the story in flashback of how they met. Elphaba is the daughter of the governor of Munchkinland, and was born with green skin. Her father shunned her, and showered his affection on her younger sister, Nessarose, who is confined to a wheelchair. The two girls go together to Shiz University, where the pretty and popular Galinda is also in their class. Elphaba and Galinda take an instant dislike to each other, exacerbated when they are roomed together and when Elphaba inadvertently shows magical powers, which causes the headmistress Madame Morrible to fawn on her. A handsome roguish prince, Fiyero, arrives at Shiz, and Galinda is charmed, oblivious to the fact that another student, a munchkin Boq, is smitten with her. At the Stardust Ballroom Dance, Galinda has eyes only for Fiyero, and persuades Boq to ask Nessarose to dance. Nessarose immediately falls for Boq and is full of gratitude towards Galinda. Elphaba turns up at the dance wearing a black hat which Galinda had given her as a joke. As people laugh at Elphaba, Galinda’s guilt makes her try to help Elphaba and a new friendship is born.
ACT 2 Elphaba is now known as ‘The Wicked Witch of the West’. ‘Glinda the Good’ has become the smiling public front of the Wizard’s regime, with Fiyero by her side as her reluctant fiancé. Elphaba pays a visit to Nessarose, who is now the governor of Munchkinland following the death of their father, and is desperately trying to keep an unwilling Boq by her side. Elphaba tries to help by giving Nessarose the power to walk, which Boq sees as his means to freedom and attempts to leave. In desperation, Nessarose tries to cast a spell to make Boq stay and fall in love with her. However, the spell backfires, shrinking Boq’s heart, and to save his life, Elphaba works another spell, one which leaves Boq as a man made of tin without a heart. Elphaba returns to the Wizard’s palace to free the monkey servants, and comes across the Wizard himself. Upon seeing Dr. Dillamond who has lost his power of speech, she vows to fight the Wizard until the end. Fiyero and the guards enter, followed by Glinda. Fiyero helps Elphaba to escape, and decides to go with her, leaving Glinda behind and broken hearted, while Elphaba and Fiyero admit their love for each other. Glinda and Elphaba meet again at the site where Nessarose has been crushed during a tornado by a house with a girl named Dorothy inside. Fueled by the rivalry over Fiyero, the two have a heated argument.

NESSAROSE
Since joining the company in 2017, she has already played two witches and a fairy godmother, but is excited to explore the uniquely dark complexity of Nessarose, the Wicked Witch of the East. Despite having never watched the show until a few weeks before auditions, Cedar is rapidly falling in love with the otherworldly movement, industrial aesthetic, and intense layered music of Wicked’s Oz. She looks forward to the twin challenges of bringing empathy to a character easily perceived as dull or needlessly callous, and of course, the constant arm workout of manoeuvring Nessa’s antique wheelchair throughout the show. Cedar-Rosie urges the public not to miss the biggest production of the year, brought to you by 40 hard-working cast members, a wildly talented cast and crew, and just a little bit of magic.
DR. DILLAMOND
Dan would like to thank his wife Claire and his sons Oliver, Tobias and Elijah for their support.

AUTHOR OF THE ORIGINAL NOVEL Published a dozen novels for children before writing his first adult novel, Wicked. A devotee of children’s fantasy, Maguire’s subsequent novels for adults are variations-on-a-theme: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister considers Cinderella as a seventeenth-century maid from Haarlem; Lost evokes the ghost of Charles Dickens’s Scrooge; and Mirror Mirror features a High Renaissance Snow White daunted by the wickedest stepmother, Lucrezia Borgia. Maguire’s novel Son of a Witch, a sequel to Wicked, is followed by volume III of the Wicked Years, A Lion Among Men, and concludes with the final novel in the Wicked Years, Out of Oz. He lives in Massachusetts and Vermont with his husband, the painter Andy Newman, and their three children.
