Where there are jobs, homes are needed. According to money.cnn.com, the U.S. added more than 2 million jobs in 2016 and the year ended with a 4.7 unemployment rate. Trends in Oregon and Central Oregon are mimicking national statistics and where jobs are created, the need for housing and commercial space follows. Need more proof? These are just three recent announcements confirming Central Oregon’s strengthening economy. The Milken Institute ranked Bend-Redmond No. 1 as the best performing Small Metro Area in the country for 2016, rising from No. 8th in 2015. Reasons for the ranking are improvement in seven of the nine indicators, including No. 1 in job growth, No. 2 in number of high-tech industries, and fourth in wage growth. The organization also cites the employment stability of the health care system and the region’s ability to diversify its economic base through “waves of innovation.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bend-Redmond metropolitan area leads the nation in telecommuters with 12.9 percent of the workforce logging in from home. In fact, Medford and Corvallis round out the top five with 9.3 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively. Damon Rundberg, Central Oregon regional economist for the Oregon Employment Department, said that, while Bend-Redmond doesn’t have the same amount of local industry as other regions, it is easily accessible by air to other major employment centers.
