First of all, downtown is populated only during the day, as most of the people come to work and then straight away go back home. As a matter of fact, the city is expensive and due to gentrification, most of the citizens cannot afford to live in the centre. Moreover, there are not many reasons to stay in downtown as it lacks free entertainment. Machili reported that recently most of the parks are bought by private owners which are transforming them into gyms, limiting their access. Another key theme that emerged concerns food. The

To regenerate an area where the population is decreasing and the neighbourhood is deserted at night, there is a strong need of inclusivity. Only if everyone will feel welcomed and get together, the project and regeneration can be successful. Therefore, culture can be the strongest tool to achieve such a goal. Moreover, as there is a vibrant and rich heritage, it is also fundamental to work on the cultural awareness of the population.

the Portuguese fled the city, leaving confusion in the area. The history, especially the colonial decades, had a huge impact on the neighbourhood of Cidade do Cimento. As a matter of fact, it is the oldest and most structured part. On the other hand, the expansion of the newer areas was fast and more fragmented. The result is a contrast in the urban forms that characterize the city of Maputo. Another key event in Kampfumo was the demographic pressure, together with the economic crisis in the 80s. Due to a high rate of unemployment, the sellers started informal businesses and markets on the streets. Furthermore, most of the public soil was occupied and some houses extended their lot towards the streets causing issues to the transportation and vegetation. After the Independence War, 19761992, most of the infrastructures are destroyed, the displaced people are coming back to their homes and the countryside is full of mines. When the war ended, the FRELIMO (party) government launched a program to revive the city’s economy, and to clean up the city by forcibly removing criminals, squatters, and undocumented residents. Since then, Maputo’s economy has recovered and stability has returned, though crime remains a problem. Still today the city has to face some issues: most of the population is living outside of Cidade do Cimento as the rents are becoming more and more expensive due to economic and social development. Most of the new construction are offices, gene

MAPUTO: WHAT TO SEE AND DO

As a matter of fact, the village of Lourenço Marques, founded in 1544, developed from the area of Cidade do Cimento which was a fishermen village in 1502. In 1721 the Dutch East India Company built the Fort Lydsaamheid, but left due do local conflicts. In the mid XVIII, century the Portuguese started establishing themselves and selling ivory. As it was stolen and reclaimed by the

Holy Roman Empire, the Portuguese started building a fort to protect themselves from attacks. The fort near the waterfront was used in the late XVIII and early XIX as a pit stop point by American, French and British wailers. In 1898, Maputo became the capital of Portuguese Mozambique due to the fast growth. The independence in June 1975 marks an important moment also for the neighbourhood of Cidade do Cimento, because most of

DEMOGRAPHICS

Differently from most of the other areas of the city of Maputo, Kampfumo showed a decrement trend in its population. As a matter of fact, in 1997 the population was of 113.234 people and it turned into 109.920 in 2007. Most of the inhabitants of Maputo live outside of the city centre and commute to work to the area every day. Moreover, the new constructions in the neighbourhood are mostly offices. The most numerous age group is of those having between 20 and 29 years old. On the other hand, it is the district with the least number of newborns, from 0 to 4 years old (8.5%). The number of women and men in Kampfumo differs for only 0.2%. The rate of infant mortality is the lowest in the Maputo: around 6% of the infants die before becoming 1 year old. In the neighbourhood, there are 33,787 orphans. The data highlight the life expectancy of 63 years old for the men and of 73 years old for the women, the highest number in the whole city.

couple of years. Due to its colonial history, Maputo’s cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, African, and Arab influences. Mozambique’s endless coastline makes it well known for its seafood, especially prawns, lobster, calamari, and clams. Other popular local dishes are grilled chicken, matapa (cassava leaves cooked in peanut sauce), curries, and samosas. Not to be missed is the country’s famous piri piri sauce, a spicy sauce made of red chili peppers. The city offers options fine dining as well as delicious local experiences: here’s our guide to ten of the best restaurants.

37

GETTING AROUND IN MAPUTO Public transport is organized with Buses and Chapas. Chapas go everywhere in Maputo at an affordable price: often the destination can be explained better from the conductor than from info points, so it’s part of the trip spirit to listen carefully to them! If you want to drive around the city, use the guarded lots when possible, otherwise tip young people on the street to keep an eye on the car: they’ll probably be happy to help. Another option are taxi and tuk-tuks, a very famous option in the African continent. Taxi are mostly situated next to top-end hotels, and the price varies following the different neighbourhoods. Tuk-tuks are less expensive than taxi, but since they’re more an informal way of transport they’re more difficult to be found!

POLANA CIMENTO A

Polana Cimento A is a district situated in the

south-eastern part of Maputo, inserting a great part of greenery, the museums and gallery complex and a great part of the coastal area. It is an expensive area with a great presence of posh residences or hotels, considered by the citizens of Maputo like the classy and chic neighbourhood for art lovers and for people who want to spend time in great locations.

DEAL Espaço Creativo The DEAL – Design, Entertainment, Arts and Literature is a village-cultural and a new concept of culture and design, where various artistic disciplines come together. This space is invigorated by the Sisters Guambe, the Designer Ab Oosterwaal and the writer Mb. Clube Naval This famous building on the coastal area of Polana Cimento A is the most known centre of Maputo as a Sports Club, a swimming pool and a small restaurant for dining time. It has been founded in 1913. Villa Algarve Villa Algarve is a single-family residential architecture, from a Portuguese family, built in the 19th century. Eclectic 2-storey house, with an irregular and symmetrical plan, featuring panels of naturalist tiles from the beginning of the 20th century with a theme alluding to Algarve people and customs. Irregular, symmetrical plan, developing on two floors with the corner area (W) set back in relation to the flanks facing NW and SW, which are delimited by a balustrade, which overlaps the rest of the building. On the ground floor, the corner area is fully occupied by a long porch with a roof covering that is repeated on both floors over all doors. On the upper floor, the rips are arranged symmetrically, with the doors to be marked by three

WHAT TO SEE Museo de Historia Natural The Natural History Museum was founded in 1911 and installed since 1933 in a beautiful building inspired by the Manueline style, built by the City Council. It is undoubtedly one of the most 4 visited places in the city by nationals and foreigners. It started out as a Provincial Museum, then the Dr. Álvaro de Castro Museum, after which it became known as the Natural History Museum after independence. Guarded by the Eduardo Mondlane University, it aims to provide naturalistic and ethnographic information. Naturalistic information is given through the display of specimens of a zoological nature, as a rule inserted in scenarios simulating natural ones. Among its collections, the zoological collection stands out, which has a large variety of mammals (200), birds (10 137!), Insects (176 527 !!!), invertebrates (1,250) and reptiles (150). Among the exhibits exhibited is a collection, probably unique in the world, of elephant fetuses from one month to 22 months. Nucleo de Arte Gallery This long-standing artists cooperative has frequent exhibitions featuring the work of up-andcoming artists (some of which is for sale). There’s also a pottery area and a garden where you can talk with the artists and watch them at work (afternoons are best for this).

In recent times the design of the new Cultural center located next to the Cemetery has created a whole new attention to the theme of sports. The idea of enhancing the sports activity has been supported also from the Municipality, following the idea of the sport as a way of integration for the citizens in Cidade do Cimento.

WHAT TO SEE Vasco da Gama Municipal Market The Mercado Central de Maputo (the Maputo Central Market in English) is a market in the centre of Mozambique’s capital city of Maputo. It is well-known for its design, which dates back to around 1900. A large entrance portal with a small tower formed the central access to a large, covered market hall. Small arched niches provided space for fixed sales facilities. To the north, Mendes designed an adjacent open market space. On 19 September 1903, the 18 stalls of the market, consisting of 6 butchers, 6 grocers, 3 fruit shops, 2 bakeries and a bar, were sold. The building was opened on 30 September as “Mercado Municipal Vasco da Gama” in honour of the Portuguese navigator and explorer Vasco da Gama Jardim 28 de Mayo The garden situated in the western part of Cidade do Cemento has huge variety of crowd and users.
