EXCITING TIMES AHEAD ON THE BACK OF OUR CONTINUING

INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE AND TECHNOLOGY Welcome to this latest issue of Benefitz News. This is our regular publication highlighting all the interesting things that we are involved in at Benefitz.

So what do we do at Benefitz you might ask, prior to reading through these 60-70 pages? The answer is we provide a wide range of solutions that help entities communicate. Our origins were in design and content. Over the years this has expanded to include manufacturing, and evolved in to a wide range of capabilities, many of which are quite unique. In this issue we profile our growing capability in web development and providing tailored online solutions. We have been in this space for well over a decade and our offering continues to evolve as the internet becomes more important to business. We have a dedicated team of web developers and designers who continue to amaze us all with their innovation and knowledge. This online strength, combined with our design and printing resource really sets us apart from the rest. Recently we have made further investments in our printing technology. In following pages we profile our newest piece of digital printing technology – the

iGEN150 Press. This is our third generation iGEN Press from Xerox. Put it together with all our other printing, personalisation and finishing technologies and you can see why many customers use us as their ‘one-stop-shop’. Our ability to print images for display and signage is well known. With state-of-the-art machinery that can print up to 5 metres wide and virtually any length, combined with the resource of our signage and installation team, there isn’t too much that we can’t tackle. We highlight this capability in this issue. While we have been around since 1988, we remain an agile business that is tackling the future head on. This is demonstrated in the many interesting projects we are involved in that are highlighted in these pages. So sit back and enjoy reading about the special business that is Benefitz. We are hugely proud of our success and the investments we continue to make in both people and technology, and the part we play in our community. – The Benefitz Team

FUSION

YEARBOOKS

With Fusion, Benefitz makes School Yearbooks very easy...

In keeping with our ‘Future Thinkers’ strapline Benefitz introduced the innovative Fusion School Yearbook System into the New Zealand market in late 2012. This is an innovative system, first developed in Australia, that allows schools to create their own yearbooks online and then have them printed and bound in high quality by Benefitz. Fusion has developed this innovative “Online to Print” System over five years and it is now used by hundreds of schools in Australia. Benefitz have been successful in introducing it into New Zealand with a number of schools using it over the past 24 months. So how does the Fusion Yearbook System work? • The system completely removes the need for schools to invest in expensive graphics software to produce the finished artwork for the Yearbook. The artwork is totally produced online using the Fusion Web-based Platform that has been cleverly developed and continues to be refined. • The school can assign its Yearbook Coordinator as the “Administrator” of the system with simple password access. Then access can be provided to others who can make contributions to specific aspects of each Yearbook. For example, each Student can personally upload their own information to the Yearbook. • Like traditional graphics software the Fusion Yearbook System allows users to be creative with the book. The difference is that it is much easier to learn and operate. Photos and images can be uploaded and positioned very easily. • If the school starts early in the year, the Yearbook content can be compiled during the year, eliminating most of the “rush” usually involved in getting it produced towards the end of the year.

Robert Johnson.

What costs are involved in using the Fusion Yearbook System? • The costs of using the Fusion Yearbook System are no more than producing theYearbook by contracting somebody to design and produce the artwork for the book and then contracting a printer to print it. • Benefitz is providing each school with the opportunity to use the Fusion Web-based Platform to design and compile the content for the Yearbook and will then print the Yearbook from a pdf file generated by the system once it is completed. • It is very easy for the school. They receive one invoice for the total production of the book, inclusive of the use of the Fusion Web-based Platform. • This cost includes any technical support needed for the school when using the online system. says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “The making of these videos is quite often viewed as being expensive, but with our Benefitz options this is no longer the case. Our customers now have access to having Video on their websites at a fraction of the cost.” VIDEOS CAN BE PRODUCED FOR LESS THAN $1000. Video advertising will soon be on every website. So if you have been looking for a better way of explaining what you do, or the benefits of your service to your potential customers, you should definitely talk to us. XUPAN JIANG

WEB GURU

Xupan Jiang leads the clever programming team that is a key ingredient in the Benefitz web development offering. Many businesses will outsource this element to others or to offshore businesses. We don’t. We have a great programming team on staff who are always on hand to provide expertise and support for customers. Xupan has been instrumental in developing the Benefitz ‘BWeb’ Content Management System (CMS) since joining the business back in early 2007. Almost eight years on he still loves his work and explains that life has become busy busy busy with the addition of two young children to his life in the past five years. Tell us a bit about your background? XJ: I recieved my Bachelor of Science Degree from Sun Yat-Sen University and worked as network engineer for Agriculture Bank of China before coming to study in New Zealand. I recieved my Graduate Diploma of Science from the University of Auckland in 2003, got certified as a Java Programmer from Sun Micro Systems and obtained an A+ Certificate from CompTIA during study. I then worked as web developer for the harness racing industry portal site harnesslink.com and did some freelance web programming work before joining Benefitz. How did you come to join Benefitz? XJ: After my wife Sharon and I got married, we both left our jobs to experiment working back in China. But we later decided to come back to New Zealand because it is a much better place to live, work and bring up a family that we were planning. At that time Benefitz was advertising for a website designer position on TradeMe, I submitted my CV and got the interview. Everything went well….and I became a Future Thinker. :-)

I like the people here, it’s like a big family. And there are always some new exciting projects to work on.

What do you love about the place? XJ: I like the people here, it’s like a big family. And there are always some new exciting projects to work on. Tell us about the family you now have after deciding to call New Zealand home? XJ: Sharon and I now have two very active boys who keep us very busy! Max and Oscar. Max is five, and Oscar is three and half years old now. What piece of machinery/technology excites you the most at Benefitz? XJ: It’s a little bit away from what I do in the business, but the CNC Router. It can cut to all kinds of shapes once you have set up the templates. Best place you’ve ever visited and why? XJ: Japan. I grew up watching Japanese cartoons and it felt good to be actually in there to experience the culture, and I love the food. Any advice for budding web developers/ programmers? XJ: Try to learn something new every day, even though it looks very simple. It applies not only to programming, it can be anything such as how to cook a perfect hard boiled egg. (Easier said than done, but I am trying hard to keep it up).

BOOK PRINTING

MADE EASY!

With the installation of three key pieces of new technology, Benefitz is making it realistic and affordable for publishers and writers to print their books right here in New Zealand. These machines are the JetSX B2 Inkjet Printing Press, Horizon PUR Perfect Binder and Horizon Hard Case Book Binder. Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Printing Press is the only machine of its type in Australasia and the second installed world-wide. The Benefitz JetSX is the perfect printing machine to print short to medium run books. It is a digital printing press so printing plates are not required. It has a sheet size of 740mm x 530mm (B2), the biggest of any flatsheet digital press in Australasia. The inkjet ink is durable, very similar to offset printing inks. The Press can print black and white and full colour in duplex (2 sides of a sheet at once). A big advantage is books can be printed stacked, meaning no extra costs for collating are incurred. Benefitz Horizon BQ-470 PUR Perfect Binder (pictured) enables the Benefitz team to take the printed sheets from the Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Press and produce finished square spine (PUR bound) books of virtually any shape or size. The BQ-470 is a fullyautomated perfect binder, producing up to 1,350 superior-quality perfect bound books per hour. The BQ-470 binder features a LCD touch-screen and can bind books of virtually any thickness and paging.

For those who wish to have their books with the hard cover finish we are able to do this on our Benefitz Horizon HCB-2 Hard Case Binder. The HCB-2 is the Ideal solution for producing ‘On Demand’ case bound books. The binding system is designed with an ergonomic concept to increase productivity and efficiency. It features simple setup and operation, advanced automation and higher productivity. Complex case binding steps are simplified with easy touch screen operation and advanced automation. This is the perfect solution for short to medium run books to be printed locally. Benefitz can also help with getting books printed offshore should that be the more cost-effective solution due to size, print quantity and time availability. A happy author...

When I finished writing my book, ‘Parenting Yadults’, I was excited with speaking engagements lined up. I wanted to have the book available for my audience and not have to wait nearly three months to get it from overseas. Benefitz turned the book around in a week! Not only were they a dream to work with, the book is stunning quality and I couldn’t be happier. What an awesome service – thanks Aidan and your team. – Yvonne Godfrey (Parenting Young Adults)

During the second half of 2014 Benefitz installed a brand new Xerox iGen150 press, the third generation iGen press that the company has taken delivery of over the past decade. “We decided on the new iGen150 as it is a great machine, but also because it really compliments the other machinery we have in the small format digital and volume offset space,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “We have operated an iGen now for many years, so the addition of a more refined machine was really a no-brainer. It is a great fit with our two Komori offset presses, the B2 JetSX Inkjet digital press and the Xerox Colour1000 press. The combination gives us significant press power and flexibility.” Built on Xerox’s proven, award-winning iGen platform, the iGen150 is a digital cut-sheet colour press built for productivity. Features of the new press include:• A 2400 x 2400 dpi imaging system—the most precise resolution available on an iGen system to date. New line screen delivers refined shape, sharp detail and text quality. • An Auto Density Control System to detect and correct streaks before they occur. • Automated Color Maintenance, which replaces and eliminates manual steps by analysing colour and notifying the operator when the press is ready for production. Xerox’s iGen150 Press is recognised as one of the most productive digital cut-sheet colour printing presses available. It uses patented image-on-image technology and matte dry ink for vivid color digital prints. The use of matte dry ink has achieved print quality comparable to traditional offset printing, and thus expands possible applications to include prints that require high quality, such as catalogues and photo albums. “This new press really is very close to offset printing,” adds Aidan Bennett. “Like any press it has its strengths and the iGen has certainly come a long way since the iGen3 which we installed almost a decade ago. Every new generation machine has seen enhancements that bridges the gap between digital and offset printing. Our real advantage, however, is the flexibility of having three ways to skin the cat – digital (iGen150 or 1000Press), offset (Komori’s) or B2 Inkjet (Truepress JetSX). It really is the full package.”

We have operated an iGen now for many years, so the addition of a more refined machine was really a no-brainer. It is a great fit with our two Komori offset presses, the B2 JetSX Inkjet digital press and the Xerox Colour1000 press. The combination gives a significant press power and flexibility.

At the time of this issue going to press, Benefitz remains the only company in New Zealand to invest in B2 Inkjet Digital Printing, with the installation of the Screen Truepress JetSX during 2013. Since its installation the machine has proven to be a workhorse, opening fresh new opportunities. “We have made a habit of being leaders in technology and we really stuck our necks out with this one,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “But we are thrilled that almost 20 months since we took delivery of the $2 million dollar machine, the advantages of the press are really paying dividends for us. These advantages include the sheet size – being able to print volume B2 digitally – and also being able to print that size as variable data or personalised images. Another advantage is being able to print on stocks up to .6mm in thickness, meaning the machine is great for short run packaging as well.” In the past 12 months Benefitz has moved into being one of New Zealand’s largest manufacturers of photo books. These are being produced on the Benefitz B2 JetSX Inkjet machine and Aidan explains that the inkjet press is a key ingredient of this new business. “It is a real advantage having a sheet size of B2 (740mm x 530mm) as we are able to lay items such as these books up several times for economies of scale. The machine prints photos very sharply so provides a great solution all round.” Overseas, Inkjet is rapidly becoming a serious

T E alternative to offset production for a wide range of applications. The Benefitz Truepress JetSX uses a single pass inkjet head unit and has a feeder and delivery system very similar to that of an offset press. The machine can print a sheet one side (simplex), or two sides (duplex). Aidan says the machine complements the fact that Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of Personalised Printing – or printing unique items from databases. “We have invested heavily in this area of our business. Our powerful solution is achieved by pairing the magical XMPIE Personal Effect software with our printing technology. XMPIE is a product of FujiXerox.” “The neat thing is the machine has also offered fresh challenges and retraining for members of our offset printing team. It is operated on a rotational basis by our printers who also work on our Komori offset machinery. It is no secret that this is technology of the future and through our investment our team are being exposed to this very early.”

And another thing…

Due to the inkjet process – as opposed to toner – the printed images are much more robust, as durable as offset inks. Laminate adheres to the printed sheet in a much better way as well.

JONO GATES

PRINT OPERATOR

Above all else, it’s the people that drive any business and in this feature we share a bit of behind the scenes goss on the people who make Benefitz tick. Next up it’s the turn of printer extraordinaire, Jono Gates. Jono started with the business as a two colour printer and he is now running multiple machines, including the latest inkjet digital technology that has really given Benefitz an edge in the market. How long have you been at Benefitz Jono? JG: I joined the company on April 16th 2007 – so eight years is coming up! What had you done previously? JG: I left school at the end of 6th form, Mum said I had to have a job in order to be able to leave school, so I went full time at my butchery job. I got offered an apprenticeship at that, but it wasn’t for me. I did some plumbing and boat-building and got offered apprenticeships in those too. It wasn’t until my Dad got me an interview in a print shop that I took an interest in printing and started an apprenticeship in offset printing. How did you come to join Benefitz? JG: At the time it was scary, but the print company I worked for was going under and I heard that Benefitz was looking for a GTO operator, so I walked in the door with a portfolio of some of my work and the rest is history! What do you love about the place? JG: It’s been said before, but the people! Also the opportunities that I have been given to drive my career forward with new machinery and technology. It is the technology that really sets us apart.

At the moment I have the satisfaction of operating the Komori 5 Colour Press – a conventional offset printing machine – and then I also spend a lot of time on our JetSX B2 Inkjet Press. Now that is a beast, a digital inkjet machine that’s capable of printing a sheet size and quality pretty much like offset. We are the only business in the country with one of these types of machines. I love the variety of going between the two and helping out in other areas as well. What are your interests outside of work? JG: Anything motorsport! I love a day at the track! And also my family - it’s taken time to realise, but family is everything. Which piece of machinery/technology excites you the most at Benefitz? JG: I’m going to have to favour the machines I run I’m all about the new technology so JetSX B2 Inkjet Press! It’s technology that really does set us apart from the rest. Can you tell us about the best place you’ve ever visited and why? JG: I will always remember going to the Gold Coast for the Indy race in Surfers Paradise – that was an amazing experience. If I wasn’t a Printer I would be...? JG: A chef - I love food and trying new things!

In addition, the accuracy of data and anonymous nature of the customer feedback means the information is trusted throughout the organisations that use it. Aon Home Insurance Renewal With major changes in the home insurance renewal process, Aon, New Zealand’s leading insurance broker, has been challenged with communicating with thousands of customers and providing them with information about their properties. The challenge was that some customers may have multiple properties covered under one facility. The Benefitz web development team have written a script that when combined with the XMPIE software can cater for customers who have one property or those with up to 20 properties. These are all printed on the fly, at normal speed, irrespective of how many properties each customer has.

Benefitz new Fujifilm Uvistar Pro8 eight colour five metres wide grand format printing machine has been a real boost for the business since being installed. This was the first machine of this kind installed in the local market. The machine is made in Israel by Mattan and marketed in partnership with Fujifilm, whom Benefitz enjoys a strong relationship with. “The versatility of the machine has proven to be everything that we thought it would,” reflected Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett when reviewing its first 12 months of operation in the Benefitz XL printing division at 18 Parkway Drive. “It can print billboard skins and banners very quickly in the four colour mode, then in approximately five minutes can be switched to the eight colour option and be capable of printing high quality items suitable for instore point of sale. We got all the bells and whistles with the machine, meaning it can also print rigid materials like a flatbed printing machine.” The Uvistar Pro8 delivers superb graphic print quality using the eight colour print mode which introduces a light colour ink set to great effect. A major technology investment has been made by Benefitz over the past year with the installation of the VUTEk EFI LED GS3250LX Flatbed Printer. This machine was the first of its kind in the New Zealand market, and with its innovative LED ‘cool cure’ ink-curing system, the machine is consistent with Benefitz commitment to green technology as it contains no VOCs, uses less consumables, produces less waste, uses less energy and has the ability to print on recycled and other materials with ease. The lower curing temperatures enable Benefitz to print heat sensitive and thin materials without buckling or head strikes, adding significantly to its portfolio of applications. Additionally, the environmental benefits mean that less energy is required, with the extra benefit of the lamps having a longer life span. “There is the benefit that the LED curing lamps don’t need to warm up before we use the printer, speeding up set-up times,” says Benefitz Director

Mike Nolan. “As well as being able to handle very sensitive substrates, the GS3250LX both increases our capacity while at the same time further reducing our impact on the environment through responsible choices in equipment and supplies. It also offers a leap forward in speed – being two times faster – and quality, over the machinery it replaced.” The Benefitz EFI VUTEk GS3250LX Flatbed Printer boasts innovative digital advancements with significant increase in production speed combined with true 1,000 DPI print capability. This enables Benefitz to quickly achieve consistent print photo-quality images, crisp text, vibrant colours and advanced three-layer white ink printing on an extended range of supported substrates. VUTEk’s innovative LED ink curing technology delivers high quality and high adhesion in order to maximise the visual allure of promotional materials, including signage, retail POS, exhibition, display, billboards and fleet graphics. “We took some time to find the right machine that would future proof our business in this flatbed space,” adds Mike Nolan. “And 12 months on we are thrilled with our choice and we are once again leading the way by being the first to adopt the LED ‘cool cure’ technology in the New Zealand market.” At 3.2 metres in print width capability, the machine also provides the perfect back-up for the Benefitz UviStar Pro8 5 metres wide billboard machine. The Benefitz Mimaki printing machines include three 1.6 metre wide large format printing machines. We also have a Mimaki vinyl cutter and have recently installed a A2 Mimaki UV Flatbed.

The 1.6 metre printing machines all print at up to 1440dpi which is virtually photo-quality resolution. “We understand that our Mimaki 1.6 metre machines are some of the busiest in the southern hemisphere,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “Apparently this is gauged from the ink usage of the machinery. So it is fair to say that the our machines are pretty well worn out when we replace them every two to three years. Most recently we decided to increase our Mimaki 1.6 metre lineup from two to three machines. Now the extra machine is flat out as well.” Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading large format printing operations. We print point of sale and promotional posters, we print exhibition and display banners, we print adhesives for signage and application, we print canvas and PVC vinyl, we print backlit lightbox skins and a whole lot more. For a great deal of these projects we use one of our state-of-the-art Mimaki machines.

Up to 1440 dpi!

R O F K “We work closely with the brand’s New Zealand agents Blue Print Imaging to ensure these machines deliver to their maximum,” adds Dallas Bennett. “We are thrilled with what we have achieved with Mimaki. The machines have certainly played a big part in our success.” “Over the last decade we have been the big movers in producing large images for display, event and architectural applications. This Mimaki machinery has taken the possibilities to a completely new level. Throw in the print quality of our five metres wide Uvistar 8-colour machine and Vutek EFI LED Flatbed and we have the best large and grand format solutions in the country by far.”

And another thing…

A big reason for choosing Mimaki was the lower consumable costs which have resulted in more favourable pricing for our customers. At the time of commissioning the cost of Mimaki inks from Blueprint Imaging was 40% less per square metre than the ink provided by previous supplier for the machines they superseded.

IT’S A BEAUTY

Benefitz has recently installed a new Mimaki A2 flatbed UV printer. This machine has an A2 bed and can print items up to 150mm thick, has multiple ink options and high print quality based in part on its 1800 x 1800 dpi resolution. “This small flatbed can print on to virtually anything,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “We are using it to print promotional products and the like as it can print directly onto 3D objects up to the 150mm height, which can be positioned and held steady by the use of jigs that we make inhouse.” When printing to rigid substrates, Mimaki’s UV-cured ink incorporates CMYK and white, giving vibrant colour and excellent adhesion properties.

Benefitz continues to develop a powerful signage resource with its dedicated facility at 18 Parkway Drive – just a few doors up the road from the main office on the corner of Parkway and Constellation Drive’s. Mark Hobson leads this Benefitz signage division, assisted by long-time Benefitz signage specialist Simon Hill. They have a wealth of experience in the industry, collectively over 40 years. 10 of the Benefitz 70+ team work from the signage division premises. Benefitz grand format printing facility – and a further eight staff – are located in the rear unit of the same building – meaning some of the country’s most powerful large and grand format printing solutions are right at their finger tips. A CNC Router and larger Rolls Roller application table have also been added to the resources that Mark and his team have available. They also have a boom lift signage installation truck that we feature in this issue. “At Benefitz we quite clearly have the best print manufacturing capability in New Zealand for display and signage with our grand format machinery,” says Mark Hobson. “Now, with the resources we have assembled in our signage division, we have a total signage package that is second-to-none. Well ahead of all others in the industry.”

BENEFITZ CNC ROUTER PROVING A REAL CUTTING EDGE

Benefitz Tekcel Enduro CNC Router, has proven to be a real advantage for the signage division, since being installed a couple of years back. This machine – the first of its type in New Zealand – was purchased from Tekcel’s New Zealand agents Blue Print Imaging. The Tekcel Enduro is a powerful CNC Router designed for companies looking for quality and accuracy. Its powerful 3.8kW or 8kW Spindle will router through a wide range of materials with ease and the automatic tool changing system makes multi-tool jobs very easy. “The router has opened up a whole range of opportunities for us,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “We are now able to do all of the cutting jobs inhouse that we once outsourced, such as 3D lettering etc., and the machine is so versatile that we are discovering new things it can do every day. This is a serious CNC Router that is used overseas by cabinet makers, shopfitters and joiners as well as sign makers.” “It does everything you want it to do, and more. It can crease and cut and it heavily supports substrates that come off our flatbed digital printing machinery. It can process card, corflute, stainless steel. All the substrates that, nine times out of 10 are not that easy to cut. It is accurate. For instance, when a sheet feeds through slightly off-square, the router will still cut and follow the correct line. It has a camera that will pick up its point and cut it in the correct place.” Boasting digital servo motors and ball leadscrews on all axis, the Benefitz Tekcel Enduro offers accurate cutting and superb repeatability. The automatic tool length sensor ensures cutting depths are accurate and with user friendly controls means operation is relatively easy.

DESIGN, MANUFACTURE,

INSTALL Benefitz Boom Lift Truck makes it easy!

The team at Benefitz not only design and produce signage, we have the best equipment to install it as well. A key tool for the signage team is the Benefitz Hino Truck, equipped with a 15 metre Snorkel and Elevating Work Platform. This vehicle, purchased brand new in 2012, enables us to install signage and big images more efficiently. The boom extends so work can be carried out at a height of up to 15.80 metres. The fibreglass basket floor extends to 13.80 metres. The basket can carry two people up to a safe total working load of 200kg. The boom is powered by a Honda petrol engine. The Hino 300 truck is powered by a four litre turbo-charged engine. “We have been involved in the installation of our large images that we print for many years,” explains Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “To have our own boom-lift truck has become a necessity due to the growth in this part of our business. We looked at second-hand options but decided that a brand new vehicle was the most desirable due to safety and technology considerations. And of course it had to be black.” Since the truck was introduced it has helped with the installation on a huge number of projects undertaken for customers by Benefitz. The truck was supplied to Benefitz by Hino Distributors (NZ) Ltd and the boom-lift by ‘Snorkel’ based in Levin.

BLAKE DOUGLAS ACCOUNT MANAGER

Yes, Benefitz is all over the design, web, print and signage scene - but who are the people that make it happen? Here we chat to one of our staff stars – Account Manager and MD Aidan Bennett’s ‘right hand man’, Blake Douglas. How long have you been at Benefitz Blake? BD: Since August 2005, so coming up 10 years! What did you do prior to this? BD: I was at Rangitoto College, then did a Sport and Recreation Diploma at AUT on the Shore. After that I worked and did summer camp in California for two winters. How did you come to join Benefitz? BD: My sister (Kelly) was a client of Benefitz and asked if there were any entry-level jobs going for me. So, I got a job as the delivery driver, and that is how I started my career here. I have worked in most areas of the business to learn all aspects before moving into working with our customers which I love! What do you like about the company? BD: I love Benefitz support of the community through the local business associations and local sports teams. It gives me the privilege to go to many different events on the Shore and meet lots of interesting people. The diversity Benefitz offers means my job as an account manager is always interesting, and I’m always learning new things. What are your interests outside of work? BD: I love sports, especially cricket and playing for

the Takapuna (Cricket Club) Pirates. I also enjoy fitness. I train with Selva Thankamani and his Get Fit Fast crew and we also have a great Benefitz group fitness session twice a week with Aaron Kiwara (a trained instructor) who works in our large format printing area. Which piece of machinery/technology excites you the most? BD: Our 5 metres wide billboard and our Flatbed machines are my favourite. It’s amazing how quick they print and the quality they produce at massive sizes. I love seeing our signage team install Large Format / XL jobs - with prints that big. Once they are installed, you see a massive impact and instant improvement. It’s very satisfying. What’s the best place you’ve ever visited in the world and why? BD: Recently I have loved travelling in Asia (Vietnam and Indonesia), and I also loved travelling around the States when I worked at the summer camp in the California, as every place is so different. But, my favourite trip would have to be to Cancun, Mexico this past April to get married... five nights at all-inclusive with resort on the beach with 60 of my closest friends and family. It was pretty amazing! Any advice for budding Account Managers? BD: ‘’Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today’’ - Benjamin Franklin.

WE LOVE PUBLISHING

COVERNOTE MAGAZINE

Benefitz has a strong heritage in publishing that dates back to the launch of the business in the late 80s. A project the company took on then was contract publishing CoverNote magazine, the quarterly magazine of the Insurance Brokers Association of New Zealand. We published the magazine, growing it in content right through from those early days until late 2012 (over 23 years) when the decision was made by the association to hand it to another publisher. It was a thrill when just 18 months later we were approached to once again take on the publishing – a big win! “We love publishing CoverNote, so it was a real disappointment to us when the bombshell was dropped that it was to be moved,” says Benefitz Director Robert Johnson who has been involved with the magazine right from the 1980s. “But that disappointment turned to elation when it was quite quickly discovered that the grass was not as green on the dark side.” “We provide the full publishing package for IBANZ in terms of the magazine and they obviously discovered it was a valuable formula once they had dipped their toes elsewhere. In fact we now provide a much more comprehensive package than we did way back when we first took the project on when I was just a young man!” The full package that Robert mentions includes selling advertising that funds the magazine, working with IBANZ and its members to develop content/ editorial for each issue, designing and laying out the 60 page magazine, then printing it on our Komori offset printing machinery, folding and binding or stitching the magazine and then distributing it to members and a dedicated mailing list. Our web

development team also ensure that the content is available online as well. “We are hugely proud of the fact we provide real value to the project as well,” adds Robert Johnson. “We have grown CoverNote from being around 20-30 pages to be 50-60 pages and it is well recognised that it is a quality publication, with authoritative content, crisp and clean design and it is nicely printed using sustainable materials such as vegetable inks and FSC compliant papers.” CoverNote is published by Benefitz four times a year in March, June, September and December.

When well respected central Auckland based Mercedes Benz servicing specialist Autohaus Auckland were wanting to change their branding they made contact with the team at Benefitz. For many years they had been an authorised Mercedes Benz outlet but changes to the worldwide servicing structure meant they needed to alter their branding to reflect that they were Mercedes Benz servicing specialists. “Autohaus is a hugely respected operation that has been around since 1979,” explains Aidan Bennett of Benefitz who managed the project. “They have a heritage with Mercedes Benz and new owner Byron Martin was keen to emphasise this heritage in the new branding.” After getting the initial brief Aidan introduced Benefitz senior designer Lee Darby to the project and he proceeded to work closely with Byron to provide the new branding solution. “Lee’s initial ideas provided Byron with no less than a dozen logo options to choose from. The predominant device that Lee came up with was a strong ‘A’ that complimented the name (and location) and still represented a style that was not too far away from the existing branding that was strongly influenced by Mercedes Benz. It was also determined that a supporting strap line to reinforce the heritage was important so Lee and I brainstormed and came up with four options. Byron decided that ‘Passionate about Mercedes Benz since 1979’ fitted just perfectly.” Part of the process also involved providing concepts on how the new branding could be applied to business cards and stationery, brochures, building and vehicle signage, email signatures and the existing website.

Designer Lee Darby explains he took great satisfaction from the project. “The strength of our overall Benefitz offering was really demonstrated by the fact that we not only created the new branding that hit the spot, but also that we followed this through to producing printed items including business cards, service stickers, stamps, flyers, presentation folders, letterheads, magazine adverts, and then produced and installed building signage that included a 3 metre high roadside plinth and an 8 metre long by 3 metre high building skin.”

‘OVERLAP’ EXHIBITION STAND

A WINNER FOR SCOTTY DOORS

By Graeme Lietz, Director, Scotty Doors.

Scotty Doors has had a fantastic long standing business relationship with Benefitz. Benefitz currently hosts our website and takes care of all our marketing and printing requirements. The ease of doing business together is enhanced by not only the location of our offices, just down the road from each other, but by the friendly, prompt customer service and follow up we always receive from the familiar folk in their office – Dallas, Ursula, Ella, Aaron, Ryan and Cameron. No project is ever too big or small and the team has always gone out of their way to assist us. Scotty Doors teamed up with Silvelox to introduce the OVERLAP system to the New Zealand market. OVERLAP is the world’s first trackless sectional garage door and embodies quality, design innovation and technology. Designed and manufactured to the highest specification in Italy, Silvelox has a unique patented trackless opening system. This means no unsightly ceiling tracks are required, allowing you to make the most of your space. Hence, Scotty Doors is excited to be the exclusive New Zealand distributor of OVERLAP. We immediately devised our marketing plan which prompted us to book a booth with the 2014 Auckland Home Show. We needed some inspirational ideas to help us introduce and promote our exciting new product line and picked up the phone to speak to Ursula Makasini. Within no time Ursula sent through some concept ideas that were further worked on by Ryan and herself to create some stunning visual 3D concept drawings that won us over. OVERLAP would not have been justified in a traditional boring carpeted show booth and required

a backdrop as exciting and innovative as the Italian product itself. Ursula and Ryan visited our office and shared their idea of an OVERLAP garage door leading into a “Mancave” with no ceiling tracks or rails. The exterior of the Mancave was a printed façade of a white weatherboard house which was so effective and realistic. Wide kwila decking completed the look and the 3 Dimensional OVERLAP logo was literally cutting edge! We stood very proud at our booth and had so many compliments on the presentation from Home Show visitors and exhibitors. We believe with the assistance of a sharp looking booth, updated website and brochures supporting our exciting product – the show was well worthwhile and in time we believe we will have some measured success... I cannot thank Ursula, Ryan and the team enough for all their guidance and expertise in the marketing world to help us prepare for the Home Show. MAKING A STATEMENT AT NEW

TAKAPUNA STORE

By now a huge number of Aucklander’s will have visited the sensational new Lets Get Outside Store in Takapuna. The new destination store opened in July 2014. The signage fit-out for the store was done by the Benefitz team. Lets Get Outside Takapuna is the second store for Nevada Sport, who is the New Zealand distributors of two internationally renowned brands. The store features the full New Zealand ranges of Merrell and Patagonia; which are two of the most innovative and leading Outdoor and Active Lifestyles brands in the world today. Lets Get Outside is essentially ‘two stores under one roof’ and showcases both Merrell and Patagonia brands separately in the one store. The product mix is urban and summer orientated to match the North Shore lifestyle. The Merrell brand is all about living and performing outside with style. Patagonia make stunning summer dresses, swimwear, and Merino garments, as well as rainwear and insulated jackets. Dallas Bennett led the project for Benefitz, supported closely by the signage team. Orange was the predominant colour in the supplied store design – a colour that can prove difficult from time to time. “Our large format printing crew and signage team did a great job within a very tight time frame,” says Dallas Bennett. “The orange was always going to be challenging, but the desired result was achieved through a combination of cut and printed vinyl.” The project involved producing bold facia signage for the outside of the building facing onto busy Hurstmere Road. An oversized facia was created from acm panelling and orange and cut vinyl to tidy up the outside of the building. An under veranda backlit sign fabricated by Benefitz Ian Simpson from ACM with applied and cut vinyl was also produce. Exterior window adhesives were vinyl cut and applied and branded security fence covers were also created for the entrance to the store. Also included for the exterior signage were rear window graphics, a sandwich board, parking signs and ACM store signs for the back of the building.

Inside the store a combination of the orange vinyl, cut lettering and printed vinyl with striking images of scenery and fauna have been used to create a very inviting warmth. All these items were printed and/or cut to shape by Benefitz and installed or applicated by the Benefitz signage team. These included wall and image panels that can be changed out seasonally, branded pelmets, laser cut logos, counter wraps, bold mission statements and extensive scenery images. “There was a requirement to follow the standards of the two leading American brands which meant creating the logos on display in certain ways,” adds Dallas Bennett. “The 3D Merrell logo for example was cut to shape out of steel and painted and then mounted to acrylic. Again, all done in house by our Benefitz team. Merrell shoe display holders have also been made to similar standards for this store and for use throughout New Zealand stockists. The whole project went very smoothly when you consider we started by doing the complete measure once building work had been done and really only had a week-or-so to take the supplied graphics, rework them to meet the specifications, manufacture and install before the store opening in early July.” Suggest you take a look at our handy work for yourself: Lets Get Outside – 11 Hurstmere Road, Takapuna.

A key ingredient of the ‘benefits of using Benefitz’ is our ability to take on a multi-faceted project from design through to all the items required for completion. For that reason we believe we are particularly valuable for those who are organising events. A project that fits into this category was the “Dangerous Duties” Holiday Programme for youngsters and Open Day promoted and organised during 2014 by the New Zealand Maritime Museum in downtown Auckland. The brief from the customer to Account Manager Blake Douglas was for our creative team to come up with the design and feel for the event and then to role this out over a wide range of items to promote and inform customers about the events and for use on site at the venue, the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Benefitz designer Chelsea Johnson came up with a concept that hit the spot for the customer and proceeded to apply this to online and print adverts, posters and flyers as well as lightbox and banner prints.

A WINNING SOLUTION FOR

AMAZON At Benefitz we are proud that we can provide just about any solution when the requirement is to produce items that help people communicate. That is what we do. The Amazon Winning Wheel produced in late 2014 is a great example. The Amazon marketing team tasked us with creating 22 lucky wheels that they could have in each of their surfwear stores around the country. The idea was that customers could have a chance at spinning the wheel and picking up one of the several offers. A great way to interact with the customers. Dallas Bennett and our signage team took up the challenge. A challenge that involved only about a week to 10 days to design and produce the stands and ship them to the stores around the country in time for the Christmas trading period. “I was thrilled with the finished wheels,” says Dallas Bennett. “First of all we had to come up with the overall design and concept and then put this into production pretty quickly. First of all we made the aluminium frame and easel that would hold the spinning wheel. We then routered the spinning wheel discs on our CNC router. We then designed, printed and laminated the graphics to go on the wheel and then put this all together so it was well balanced and included the clapping clicker and spacers that determined the finishing spots.” A prototype was quickly created with a couple of • Design and produce spinning wheel for use in stores. different substrates tested to ensure the balance would • Fabricate aluminium stands. be achieved. In 2012 we purchased one of their All Blacks branded boats. The boat (along with a handful of others) was produced in conjunction with their sponsorship of the All Blacks for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The Benefitz and Channel Magazine branded boat lives in and around Takapuna Beach and is made available for use by local marine-based groups such as Takapuna Boating Club (for yachting events etc.) and for the Takapuna Beach Cup Waka-ama group. It has even been used to rescue those in trouble off the beach. "it is a great promotional boat for sure, but also adds real value to these not-for-profit groups for their events," says Aidan Bennett. "It is a fantastic boat. The technology is amazing and it is very durable. It's great to show off a customer's product while adding value to our community."

Benefitz Sealegs is a star attraction at the annual Takapuna Beach Cup Waka-ama event that brings crowds to the beach for a big weekend every February.

It is no secret that our world is changing. The way people communicate is moving constantly which is why as a business we need to keep evolving. Investing in new opportunities, investing in people and investing in technology are key strategies for facing this moving landscape. An exciting new part of our business has evolved over the past 18 months that we call 'Benefitz Photohub'. In this area we essentially make personal photographs come alive. Benefitz Photohub took 12 months to set up and involved investing in new technology that has resulted in us being a leader in the production of a whole range of personalised products featuring photographs. Most of these products involve producing one-off copies that we are producing for customers of some of New Zealand's leading retailers and photography businesses. "We have essentially set up a facility that enables

us to produce a whole range of products featuring treasured personal photographs," explains Benefitz Managaing Director Aidan Bennett. "The products include Photobooks, Calendars, Posters, Greeting Cards, Canvas Prints, Mugs and other such items such as Mobile Phone Covers and Skins." "In this digital world people now take hundreds – maybe thousands – of photos and often they never leave their mobile devices. What we are doing is working with well known wholesalers and retailers to give their customers loads of options to make these photos come alive by being used in treasured personal momentos or gifts." Aidan Bennett explains that Benefitz Photohub draws on existing production areas of the business to produce these items, but has also included the introduction of many pieces of new machinery that

have been added to ensure these products can be produced efficiently with quality being a key factor. "The Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Printer was a key ingredient of the mix for the Photohub project. The combination of this machine and our existing Xerox machinery means we have a powerful personalised printing capacity for Photobooks, Calendars, Posters, Greeting Cards etc. In addition, for these printed items, we have added a whole range of finishing equipment including a Perfect Binder, a Hard Case Binder, a UV Coater, a Fujifilm Photo Printer, special shape cutting machinery and guillotines. A totally new area for us has been gifting products which feature treasured photographs. We now have machinery that produces printed Mugs, Beer Steins and have also installed a small Flatbed Printer that enables us to print on virtually any item. As a result we can now print such items as Mobile Phone Covers and the potential is endless as this machine is very versatile." "The Benefitz Photohub project also draws on our large format printing resource to produce Canvas Prints as well as Wood and Corrugated Iron Prints. We already had the best printing technology for this purpose but have added more automated finishing gear such as a canvas stretching machine imported from Ireland." Benefitz Photohub went into production in mid 2014. It is particularly busy around celebration events such as Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Christmas. For Christmas of 2014 the company produced thousands of personalised items that were shipped all over the country. "2014 was a steep learning curve for us with this new venture but I was thrilled with what we achieved," said Aidan Bennett in early 2015. "This is an exciting new part of our business that will continue to grow. Particularly pleasing was the way we – our in house web development team – have developed state-ofthe-art online systems that track these projects right through production to delivery. This has made things very easy for ourselves, and our retail and wholesale partners, to track the progress of every item."

Benefitz Photohub Project Coordinator Amy Burgess with members of the Benefitz Large Format Printing crew who produce Canvas Prints, Corrugated Iron Prints and Wood Prints for the project.

columnists in many areas of expertise. Advertising support has been, and continues to be, strong. Aidan said: “Our success has really been a snowball effect. And I do believe we have really established a magazine that locals love reading. And it is free!” People like to see and read about people, and our team can often be seen ‘Out & About’ on the Shore taking photos at local events to share with readers in the magazine’s popular social pages. SEPTEMBER 2012 ISSUE 25

Back in July 2010, the first issue of Channel magazine was published by Benefitz. Managing Director Aidan Bennett felt the Shore needed a positive, quality monthly magazine that celebrated local people and community, and encouraged people to support local businesses. And that original ethos has remained unchanged. Channel has since topped the 50 issue mark and has become a well-read and respected regular feature of Shore life. It has grown in size and distribution, from an initial 17,000 copies, we now have 25,000 magazines reaching homes and businesses each month on the Shore. Our combined December/January 2015 (50th) issue was a weighty 160 pages and celebrated this milestone for the magazine. Hand in hand with the 50th issue has been the launch of a new website for Channel. From day one there has been a website that goes hand-in-hand with the magazine but the 2015 version is something special. Developed by our Web Team it is now used as the “Hub” for collecting content for the magazine. Content goes live online the moment it is ready for the magazine. The website features lots of “behind the scenes” technology that makes publishing a 150 page monthly magazine and website as easy as possible. Channel has become a vehicle for information and advice on a wide range of topics, with quality editorial features, photography and a swell of regular

27TH YEAR

OF GOLF CARDS

Benefitz has moved into its 27th year of producing score cards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand. During this time it is estimated we have printed up to 70 million score cards. The company first got into producing these score cards back in 1988 when Managing Director Aidan Bennett was just a young man and spotted an opportunity to enhance the quality of the score cards being used by golfers at each club. “I was playing golf one day and was scoring on

this shabby single colour card and it dawned on me that score cards could become a powerful advertising vehicle,” explains Aidan Bennett. “So I set about designing an attractive generic score card that could be rolled out across a number of clubs. I approached one of the big sponsors of golf back then – an insurer – and they loved the concept. With 100% sponsorship from that company, we rolled the new full colour Benefitz score cards out across virtually all of the Auckland golf clubs. The concept was

Previously we printed all these score cards monthly, in one run, on our Komori press. Now, with the JetSX, we have the flexibility to print them virtually on demand just as economically. then picked up by the sponsor’s network of agents throughout New Zealand and it went nationwide.” By the early ‘90s Benefitz was responsible for the printing of score cards for over 300 golf clubs throughout the country. From Kaitaia in the north to Bluff in the south. “After quite a few years the sponsor decided to pull back from what they were spending and we reverted to printing directly for the clubs,” adds Aidan Bennett. “Over the last 15-20 years we have been essentially printing for the individual clubs and their locally sourced sponsors and advertisers.” The larger golf clubs in New Zealand use up to 100,000 score cards a year. An average club will use 30,000 to 40,000. Benefitz still prints golf score cards for over 200 clubs from all over the country. The company also works closely as a preferred print partner for DotGolf, a company which has developed an innovative score card system that allows specific details of the individual player to be laser printed at the golf clubs. Benefitz prints most of these cards colour on one side and the laser printing is done on the other side at the clubs.

“The introduction of our B2 JetSX Volume Inkjet press has recently provided us with real flexibility when printing these score cards,” explains Aidan Bennett. “Previously we printed all these score cards monthly, in one run, on our Komori press. Now, with the JetSX, we have the flexibility to print them virtually on demand just as economically.” The longevity of the project is something that Aidan Bennett is very proud of. “To be still going strong in this golf market after 27 years is something that warms my heart,” says Aidan. “This type of longevity with many customers and different projects is what has laid the foundations for the business we have today at Benefitz.” Visit: www.benefitz.co.nz/golfcards

And another thing…

As well as printing the score cards for golf clubs, the Benefitz team also works with the clubs and their sponsors to ensure each score card is designed exactly to their satisfaction. In fact we design 95% of the score cards we print.

CHELSEA JOHNSTON GRAPHIC DESIGNER

There are some great characters who work behind the scenes at Benefitz who make it all happen. Here we have a chat with one of our long-serving employees, graphic designer Chelsea Johnston who not only works her magic on the Mac, but goes the extra mile in organising social events for staff and decking the place out for themed days throughout the year – including organising Benefitz’s recent Pink Ribbon Breakfast. (She is also one of the office’s best bakers, making loads of treats for staff celebrations!) How long have you been at Benefitz Chelsea? CJ: I have been working at Benefitz for just over eight years now. I started in August of 2006. What had you done previously? CJ: Before working at Benefitz I completed sixth form at Rangitoto College. I then spent two months in Canada and when I came home I completed a ninemonth diploma course in Computer Graphic Design at Natcol. How did you come to join Benefitz? CJ: Getting my job at Benefitz was one of the ‘it’s who you know’ situations. My Mum was a client of Benefitz and happened to mention that I was doing a graphic design course. Benefitz kindly offered to have me in for a couple of days of work experience. It was after spending a day there that I realised this was the industry for me and this was where I wanted to work. I sent Aidan a copy of my CV and portfolio when I completed my course and he offered me a position. There wasn’t a design role available at the time, but there was a position in Digital Print Finishing. A few months later I was assisting account managers, and within the year I was doing full time design. I wouldn’t change having worked in the other departments, it taught me so much about the other aspects of the company.

Learn from others around you, and don’t be afraid to start at the bottom. 48

BENEFITZ NEWS

www.benefitz.co.nz

What do you love about the place? CJ: I love the friendly family atmosphere. We have a good laugh everyday. And there is always someone there offering to help you out when you have too much on or are a bit stressed. A colleague and I have picked up the running of social events and it has added another side to the everyday routine at work. Getting involved in charity events such as the Pink Ribbon Breakfast, Buddy Day and Movember have all been well received. What are your interests outside of work? CJ: As many people would probably know I love to bake. I’ve even started bringing this into the work place with regular treats for staff, including a cupcake on your birthday or even a special one of a kind cake if it’s a milestone birthday. I love to spend time with family and friends. I bought my first home three years ago so I have found a real interest in renovating and interior design. And thanks to my Dad and his Kiwi ‘do it yourself’ attitude we have been making some great progress with updating my home. I also enjoy getting outside to keep fit and healthy. What piece of machinery/technology excites you the most? CJ: I find our flatbeds amazing – both big (massive!) and small. How they can print on so many different substrates and items. Literally whatever you want to print on, they can do it. The look of prints on wood is something I find very unique. Any advice for budding graphic designers? CJ: Learn from others around you, and don’t be afraid to start at the bottom. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t started out in Digital Print Finishing. I learnt so much about how the way I do my job affects those doing the printing and finishing. I also gained a lot of respect for those working in finishing and what they have to do to complete a job before it makes it to the client. And if you don’t know something don’t be afraid to ask. I learn so much from the other designers around me. You can learn something new everyday.

sponsorship & the community Benefitz is a keen supporter of the FOR EVERYONE Foundation, the charitable initiative of Ali Williams, Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. Our support includes printing and display items for events and it was also a thrill for the directors to attend their comedy debate and fundraising dinner held in Auckland during the second half of last year. The three All Blacks launched the foundation in 2009. FOR EVERYONE helps good people to help others at the grass roots, community level by providing the resources necessary to get the job done. They fund small projects between $500 and $5000 that are often difficult to find funding for but often mean the most to the people who benefit from them. The priority is to fund projects that can be completed in full with a grant of under $5,000. They also help help supply human resources to assist with community projects through a volunteer network. To date over $200,000 in grants have been provided to community organisations throughout New Zealand. www.foreveryone.org.nz

GIVING TO THE

COMMUNITY Celebrating our community has been a key ingredient of the Benefitz business for most of the 27 years it has been in existence. We do this by providing ongoing support for a range of not-forprofit community organisations and events. "We have become well known as loyal community supporters and this is great for our business," says Aidan Bennett. "People really appreciate it and by default this is great for our team morale as well. Benefitz has a good name in the community through the work that we do and how involved we are with these notfor-profits. It does bring us business as well. Our community magazine Channel is an extension of this." Aidan's leadership of the community focus was recognised with a community award by Takapuna Rotary in 2014. The Arthur Coombes Memorial Cup is presented every year to a person in the community who the Rotary Club determines has made a significant contribution to the community. "It was a thrill and a surprise to receive the recognition," explains Aidan. "It was just as much an award for what we have achieved as a business

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE WITH THE

NORTH HARBOUR CLUB & AIMES AWARDS Benefitz is well known for its support of the community and an organisation that we are very proud to support is the North Harbour Club and Charitable Trust. In fact it is support that now dates back 18 years. The North Harbour Club is a group of 150 community leaders who each have a connection with the North Shore and North Harbour region. Their collective aim is three-fold:- To promote the North Harbour region; for business establishments of the region to meet and network for the good of the region; and for the Charitable Trust to raise funds and present scholarships to the youth of the North Harbour region through the annual AIMES Awards. "I was encouraged to join the North Harbour Club way back in 1997 – a couple of years after it started – by a couple of customers, Bob Jago and Andrew MacKenzie," explains Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett. "It has been a brilliant organisation to be part of and the added bonus for me was being asked to become a trustee around 10 years ago. It is a role I cherish as the North Harbour Club plays a very important role in the community." The highest profile initiative of the club is the annual AIMES Awards. These awards celebrate excellence achieved by young people of the region in the fields of the Arts; IT, Innovation and Science; Music; Education; Sport; Service to the Community. "The club and the AIMES Awards have been going now for 20 years," adds Aidan Bennett. "Each year we raise funds through social events and sponsorship so we can give these awards and significant cash grants to outstanding young achievers in the community. Since 1995 over $1.6 million worth of grants have been awarded."

AWARDS

Recent recipients of AIMES Supreme Awards includes golfer Lydia Ko, musician Ella Yelich-O'Connor (aka Lorde) and novelist Ben Sanders. All three grew up and went to school on the North Shore. The AIMES Awards are presented at a black tie gala dinner in November each year that's is a highlight of the local social calendar. Benefitz has supported the club for 18 years with the supply of web and graphic design, advertising, printing, display and signage.
