Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager I have been recapping on the last 3 years that I have had the privilege of being manager of the local Browns Bay Business Association and have started making a list of things we have achieved. You may not be aware, but all the businesses in Browns Bay up to our Glen Rd boundary, are members of the business association as we run a Business Improvement District style association. So the achievements I am going to list are a reflection on everyone of those businesses.
Street Scape
Over the 3 years all your businesses have contributed over $45,000 of streetscape improvement to make your town centre a better place. These projects include: • Lighting trees in the Main Street and the Plaza - and on-going maintenance • Our giant 7 metre Christmas tree in the Plaza - installing, dismantling and paying for storage annually • The new green fence around the tree, installed this year • New flags for Christmas and summer in the Main Street this year • A marque for shelter on windy days on the Plaza stage in 2014 • Digital signage screens for community notices in key pedestrian through fares installed recently
Promotions
We have established a program of promotions as fun events and a way to reward local customers for their support of our local businesses. They vary in value, but what has given me the most pleasure is the humbleness of our local citizens when I present them with the prizes. It is a highlight of the job. Interestingly, I am yet to have a previous winner, win a second time and in fact, many winners have never won anything before. This makes giving them their prize even more special. We enjoy thinking up new ideas for prizes and our current 'Classic Kiwi Holiday' promotion is just that. What could be more 'Kiwi' than time away with family and friends at a holiday bach of your choice. As always with these promotions, we
have fabulous support from local businesses and suppliers. This promotion is no different - New World and Browns Bay Liquor have jumped on board as major sponsors and bookabach have given us a great deal on the gift vouchers. Please support these and our other sponsons as we run our promotions, because without them, the prizes would not be nearly as good.
Browns Bay Magazine
We now have your only local magazine coming to your door 6 times per year rather than quarterly. With local North Shore company, Benefitz taking over the whole operation, we believe we are producing a magazine that can grace your coffee table for sometime with lots of wonderful articles on people and activities in the bays.
a half. It was wonderful to see the talent that we have right here in the Browns Bay town centre. David took us on a tour of the school recently and I'd have to say it is impressive. But apparently not many students are local - so if you have a child that has a creative streak, I would suggest you check out this outstanding local school. Certainly the students I spoke to were really lovely adolescents who said they loved the environment that allows them to develop their creative talents.
New Businesses/Refurbishments
In the last year we have had 21 new businesses come into Browns Bay and a number of businesses refurbish their premises or in the case of New World, rebuild on an old site that had become an eyesore. All of these businesses have helped to improve the shopping environment in Browns Bay, and customers have come back in their droves. So much so, that your favourite Town Centre is the No.1 Town Centre on the Shore in terms of sales and has an unbeatable vibrancy that makes it a great place to live, work and play.
Partnerships with local key stakeholders
We are fortunate to have a strong local board, ably lead by Chair Julia Parfitt. They are well aware of the character of Browns Bay and work hard supporting local initiatives. Sally Cargill, from the East Coast Bays Project is a real gem. I have not met a community co-ordinator who accomplishes as much as Sally packs into a year. It is truly a pleasure to work with her and support events and activities she runs which shape the fabric of the Browns Bay community.
Christmas Tree Lights Event
It was great to see hundreds of children and their parents at the 2nd annual Christmas Lights event where one young local child gets to switch the lights on for the current Christmas season on our enormous tree. This years lucky child was Callum who is seen in the picture performing the task. A massive thanks to David and the students from Corelli School of Fine Arts in Anzac Rd who put on a fantastic concert for the first hour and
New Businesses
We’re thrilled to welcome Michael Hall and his company Advantage Air Conditioning Ltd into the Browns Bay Business Association. Their company specialises in the supply and installation of heat pumps as well as commercial ventilation and air conditioning. After many years living in West Auckland, Mike and his wife Trudy have now called Browns Bay home for nearly four years. They love the vibe, community atmosphere and gorgeous beach that Browns Bay has to offer. It’s great to see people settling here, running their business and creating the Kiwi lifestyle for themselves - and we enjoy supporting them to do it. A big welcome also to Yay Splash – Bikini’s & Swimwear who have moved into their Beachfront location of 77 – 85 Clyde Road (Beachside). Yay Splash is all about making woman feel great in their swimwear. By sourcing the best fabric, and by spending hours of love getting shapes and fit customized they are able to bring quality like no other. They’re always bringing new styles to suit different body types so it’s worth calling in to see what they have for you. We’re very excited to have such a unique business here in Browns Bay!

Out & About in the Bays
Browns Bay Christmas Tree Lights On Friday 6th November the Browns Bay Christmas tree lights were once again ceremoniously switched on. We were treated to wonderful performances from the talented students at The Corelli Academic School of the Arts – everything from story telling, cellist, pianist and ballerinas! It’s always fantastic to see the talent we have in Browns Bay! The mischievous elf Charlie got bundles of laughs and was a great hit with kids! The man in red himself was also spotted handed out treats to children! A big congratulations to the young man Callum who was the big winner on the night and got to switch on the lights for the very first time this year! A thanks also goes to this year’s sponsor of the Christmas tree: Augensteins Jewellers, Browns Bay Liquor, Barfoot and Thompson Browns Bay, Murray McCully – East Coast Bay Electorate Office, Forrest Funeral Services, Harcourts Cooper & Co – Browns Bay. Glimpse Photographic: Browns Bay Photography: With Glimpse Photographic
Our studio may be new, but we’re not! We’ve lived in Browns Bay for 15 years and have been creating unique images for businesses and families for over ten years now. Our extensive portfolio reflects the wide variety of companies and people that we have worked with in this time. We were excited to open our studio in Inverness Road in October and bring some of our clients over the bridge to show them just how good we have it in the Bays! Pop in and check us out for yourself. If you’ve been considering getting some family portrait photography, we’re proud to say, we have no hidden costs. ‘Like’ Glimpse Photographic on Facebook for updated info of our latest packages, or come in to see us.
WE GET THE BIG PICTURE We all know Christmas is a time for giving but why not treat yourself too? Book a family photo shoot and use your pictures to create personal, fun or artistic Christmas gifts for all your loved ones. Plus you’ll get to treasure all those wonderful photos for a long time to come. As an extra sweetener, all one hour portrait packages booked between now and Christmas come with a free gift for you. Choose from personalised Christmas cards, an A4 calendar or two 10”x8” prints – all options will be created with your choice of photo from your shoot. This package includes at least 10 professional edited electronic images from your photo shoot to use however you wish – create jigsaw puzzles, mugs, photobooks, playing cards, clocks, phone cases and so much more. Or simply have your images enlarged and mounted to create beautiful wall art. These are your pictures to have printed wherever you like, but we are happy to provide advice and recommendations. For the art lover on your Christmas list check out our own photographic artworks. We have some stunning samples of this beautiful country on our walls, or peruse our books and website for inspiration. Artworks can be produced in a variety of sizes to suit all spaces and budgets. Don’t forget to make the most of having your family and friends around in the holidays and enjoy those moments together.
Get your camera out and snap away so you can look back at your sunny, relaxed selves over the winter months. If you’d like to be in the photos yourself, call us and we’ll capture those memories for you! It’s also the time of year to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. Our kids might be saying goodbye to some of their best friends as they start a new school, or may be leaving home for the first time. Parents enjoy celebrating these milestones and our special ‘express’ portrait package suits these occasions perfectly. This half hour sitting for up to 3 people (children or adults), allows best friends or family a chance to make some smiles together to treasure while they’re apart. The cost can even be split between 2 or 3 people and make for a very affordable special experience. This package includes one print per person and at least 5 edited electronic photos to use however you wish. Finally, we’ve had a few enquiries during the past month regarding photography tuition and will be offering photography workshops in our studio from early 2016. If you are keen to find out more, please pop in or email us and tell us which area of photography interests you and your current level of expertise. That way we can tailor our workshops to suit. Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and fantastic holiday season with family and friends!

Cam Calkoen: Bending Perceptions, Inspiring Change
Tidings of Comfort and Joy In Charles Dickens’ story A Christmas Carol only one carol is named: “God bless you, merry gentleman! May nothing you dismay!” Scrooge’s response to these lines causes the singer to flee in terror. Thankfully he is eventually transformed and enjoys Christmas. And he becomes generous! The carol mentioned is also known as Tidings of Comfort and Joy. It is not surprising that people struggle to find news that is comforting and joyful. Recent events around the world make that difficult. On the day that I heard about the attacks in Paris, I walked past a lady in a car at a shopping centre. She looked serious and gloomy, but a smile from me brought about a delightful beam in return. It doesn’t take much to bring some cheer to others. Simple kindness can make a difference. Ordinary good deeds can bring comfort and joy.
It doesn’t take much to bring some cheer to others. Simple kindness can make a difference. Ordinary good deeds can bring comfort and joy. The Christmas tree down in Browns Bay cheered me that day. It was a reminder of our hope for the future. The angels’ message announcing the birth of Jesus in the Bible have these words: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people” (Luke 2:10). In Handel’s Messiah the words Comfort ye, comfort ye my people from Isaiah 40 ring out too with a message of comfort and hope. At Christmas we celebrate again the birth of Jesus who is also called the Prince of Peace. I encourage you to visit your local church this Christmas and hear the story again. May we find comfort and joy in the good news of what God has done in Christ once more. Have a blessed Christmas and receive His peace. Rev Robin Palmer – Browns Bay Presbyterian. www.bbp.org.nz
Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.
Take the leap! Opportunity… it’s around us every moment of everyday. It’s in how we look, how we think, how we do and how we be. It may be small, it may be huge, it may be a massive action with minute results or a tiny action that could change our world. In some of my speeches I give people the opportunity to take a bungy jump, that’s right a bungy jump! It even sent shivers down my spine. But having done it and realising it’s a perfectly safe opportunity that can significantly change ones life I realised the risk was a figment of my imagination and the process I went through clearly identifies a common thought pattern for determining what we do when presented with any opportunity. The first thought that may pop into ones mind when presented with an opportunity is; I’ve already done it! I’ve already heard that speaker. I’ve already read that column. I’ve already been to the gym… and it’s not working! Do it again, the only constant in this world is change and each time we do something we’ve had different experiences which means we’ll have different learning’s. The second thought that can come into ones mind when presented with an opportunity is “I’m scared”. We were scared doing exams, learning to drive, asking our significant other on the first date, leaving “home” to explore the world. But those ‘scary’ things build the foundation to who we are. The difference between those who are good, those who are great and those who are awesome is that they’re prepared to do what others are not, they’ll step that little bit further, jump that little bit further, make that phone call, send that e-mail. The third thing that can go through our mind when presented with an opportunity usually begins with the words “I’d rather…” The risk with I’d rather is that we don’t know what it takes to do something different or be someone else. Beneath every beautiful opportunity is a mountain of admin, processes, development that is required. So I’d rather, should be, I'd rather be all I can be and in order to find out how great we can be we may need to detach ourselves from the ego we’ve created to become all that we can be. What is the opportunity you have for shifting the way you look, feel, do and be?

Yay Splash! Bikinis & Swimwear
Splash Landing! New swimwear store is the culmination of a dream for a Shore girl who has come back home from Bondi... Sunshine, beaches and bikinis...the epitome of summer! The story of Yay Splash! is one of those homegrown, feel good tales we love at Channel. Shore raised Lara Blomfield has recently returned home - from Bondi - to make a dream of hers come true. Working in the film and television industry on costume design has provided an exciting career for Shore girl Lara, who has travelled widely with her work. But this super stylish, super friendly woman has had a long-held dream of starting her own fashion label and is now back home having done just that. Yay Splash! opened on the beach front - 77-85 Beach Front Lane - in Browns Bay last month. The store is next to the beach, and is like stepping off the beach, into another beach, with its full length wall photos of sunny shorelines, and simple sunshine-like lights. Sea scenes and actual seaside merge in the view out of the large windows of Lara’s new workplace. “It’s a dream come true! I feel like it’s a great time now. I’m so pleased to have my own label; to be designing swimwear that is made locally, and sold right here next to the beach, which has always been my first love! “The name Yay Splash! is a bit different; it came from my brotherin-law, accidentally. I’m known for saying ‘yay’ quite a lot and one day he just jokingly said the words ‘Yay! Splash!’ and it stuck.” Lara is a ray of sunshine, not only with the vibrant yellow outfit she is wearing on the day we meet, but her endless smiles and boundless enthusiasm for what she is doing, and for the Shore. She recently moved to Milford, but has also lived in Greenhithe and Beach Haven before jetting around the world and settling in Bondi Beach for work. She said: “I am a Shore girl, I love this place! It’s good to be back. I’m loving so much about Shore life, like walking my dog on Milford Beach. “The welcome I’ve had here in Browns Bay has been wonderful,” Lara’s store is situated underneath East Coast Bays MP Murray McCully’s office. She says the local MP and his team are great welcoming neighbours to have and have been full of support for her new venture. “It feels like Browns Bay is a great place to be right now. It has a really good community feel and it’s attracting quite a wide range of people and a lot of new businesses, cafes, restaurants and bars. It seems to be one of the fastest growing areas at the moment. And it’s
10

Lara Blomfield.
not surprising - it’s a beautiful destination!” “I love making people feel comfortable in what they’re wearing, and trying out very different looks. Swimwear is quite hard to find, so I’ve created designs that I think are really fun in styles that I feel are very flattering.” All Lara’s swimwear is made from high performance material, with clasps plated in 22 carat gold. This is stylish, bespoke swimwear that’s built to last, and to wow! The bold and the brave bikini wearers amongst us should check out the dazzling gold two piece she has in store. This super-statement piece wouldn’t look at all out of place in Lara’s temporary home of Bondi, or on the beaches of California or Rio! This one is guaranteed to make eyes pop - wear if you dare! Rosealee - helping people in need to shine Rosealee Wells works for community group Shine, which is situated at the North Shore Policing Centre in Mairangi Bay. She has a postgraduate degree in Psychology and has worked as a Youth Worker in both the North Shore and South Auckland, and volunteered as a telephone counsellor for Youthline. Rosealee has always had a sense of community and felt strongly about feminism and that’s what attracted her to her current role at Shine, where she has the opportunity to educate women about relationships and advocate against violence. Courtney Bennett: Explain to readers what Shine is all about? Why is it situated at the police headquarters? Rosealee Wells: Shine is about supporting victims of domestic violence, both women and men. However, because the large majority of domestic violence victims are women, I mostly work with women. Shine provides advocacy and connects people with supports, including counselling, safety upgrades and other necessary services like Child, Youth and Family, Police and lawyers. Our most important role is to help increase the safety of our clients and their children. We also have a national helpline, a No Excuses men’s stopping violence programme, provide education to professionals and have a Kidshine programme working with children who have witnessed domestic violence. I work remotely at the North Shore Policing centre, it is an innovative and collaborative way of working. It enables Shine to be on the pulse of what’s happening with our clients, enables me to respond quickly to referrals, access necessary safety information and offer education to other professionals about the complex dynamics of domestic violence. We also have other advocates located at Child, Youth and Family and a Family Works worker at our main office. CB: What does your day to day job involve? RW: My job involves responding to crisis, which means that everyday is different. I attend call outs with the family violence Police officers where I offer support beyond the capacity of what Police can offer. I make contact with victims from police reports and offer first-aid safety advice, deliver Ministry of Justice safety programmes for people with protection orders. The programmes allow me to work with clients on a more long-term capacity to ensure safety, work on boundaries, assertiveness, confidence and educate people about domestic violence, what is involved in reporting a breach of the protection order and any upcoming related needs of the client. CB: Have you always been involved in the community? RW: I became involved with the community while I was at University studying towards my psychology degree. I wanted to gain experience beyond my academic study and apply what I had learnt to a community setting. Personally, I value giving my time and skills, engaging people and where possible helping others. CB: If you could have one wish for Christmas, what would it be? RW: That everyone has the opportunity to feel safe and uninhibited by the actions of others. No one deserves to feel fearful of another individual. CB: Why is it important that we have organisations like Shine in the community? RW: Shine provides an amazing service, without such services victims
of domestic violence would be alone and it would be harder for them to access specific safety information. Everyone at some point needs support, especially if you have experienced constant manipulation, fear, put downs, financial abuse, physical or sexual violence. It puts people in a very vulnerable position where support is essential. CB: How can the North Shore community help Shine? RW: North Shore locals can make donations via our website and specify that you want the donation to support people on the North Shore. Because Shine is not fully funded we currently only have the capacity to help one out of every four referrals we receive. It is awful to think that others miss out on the service due to a lack of funding. CB: What other community groups or charitable organisations do you admire and why? RW: I really admire the work of the Red Cross providing aid to Syrian refugees amidst a time of their absolute desperation. I think that New Zealand needs to do its bit, acknowledge our privilege as a western nation and dramatically increase our refugee quota. I also admire charitable organisations in India that aim to prevent female infanticide. India has one of the highest population disparities between men and women partly due to high rates of female infanticide. Such organisations educate people in rural communities and provide practical support to poorer families when a female is born. They provide the family with means to create a livelihood by providing them with coconut plants and a goat to support the family and generate an income. CB: What do you like most about working in Mairangi Bay? RW: I like the accessible views of Rangitoto. I have always enjoyed being in nature and after a hard day at work it reminds me of the beauty in the world that unfortunately dealing with violence on a daily basis is often lost. CB: Anything you feel we could better as a community? RW: I think the community does a good job at calling the Police but please if you see someone being verbally abusive to a partner, someone taking advantage of someone who is intoxicated or being physically abusive, please step in if it is safe to do so or call the Police. We are all apart of the same community and our actions effect others. CB: In my next life, I am going to come back as… RW: A world leader and make serious changes to policy that works towards equality and redistributing concentrated wealth of others to people in need. "Not only do we have fun as a team we pride ourselves on achieving the best outcomes for our customers," says owner Claire Knapp. "This maybe as quick and simple as having an eyebrow shape or as relaxing as having a two hour pampering session. What ever your concerns or desires we are here to help you achieve them."
Something very new and exciting was also introduced to Skin Deep this year, a new medical grade skin care range called Osmosis.
Members of the Skin Deep team – Celia, Raechel and Claire.
To make it easier this Christmas Claire and her team have some amazing packages available as either a gift voucher or you can book yourself or someone you love in for one their divine packages before Christmas. But be quick as space was filling up at the time of publishing. Something very new and exciting was also introduced to Skin Deep this year, a new medical grade skin care range called Osmosis. Osmosis allows the skin to exfoliate naturally and focuses on the delivery of active ingredients into the dermal layers where the majority of skin tissue originates. Osmosis achieves remarkable results by addressing skin damage through increasing collagen and elastin, remodeling scar tissue, increasing skin's nutrition and growth factors and actively repairing DNA damage ie; Sun damage. All the ingredients in Osmosis are Chirally Correct which means they have a duty to ensure potentially harmful ingredients do not get into the skin. The molecules undergo a purification process in which only the positive effects of the ingredient remain. Inquire today about the skin care range and facials we have available. "We want to say a thank you to all our wonderful customers who have supported us this year," adds Claire. "We wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year. We look forward to your continued support in 2016." Skin Deep Face & Body Studio, 81 Clyde Rd, Browns Bay, Auckland. Phone 4789900 or visit: www.skindeepstudio.co.nz www.brownsbay.org.nz

East Coast Bays Community Project: Summer Fun
Striking new “ToyVan” hits the roads, reserves & beaches Thanks to the team at Benefitz you are certainly not going to miss it! In early November the new East Coast Bays Community Project “Toy Van” hit the road, bringing fun to the beaches and parks of the East Coast Bays over Summer. “We’ve had a Toy Van doing this fun work over summer for over a decade or more but our old van was getting tired so we managed to get funding to purchase this newer van,” explained East Coast Bays Community Project manager Sally Cargill during November. “We then asked Aidan and his team at Benefitz to come up with some fun graphics and what they have done is very special. The van has always been a hit with the kids and is even more recognisable now with the striking new graphics.” The van has the number plate ‘TOYVAN' and is driven around by the East Coast Bays Community Project ‘Summer Fun Coordinators’ who this year are Kirsten and Sarah. The van is overflowing with fun toys which are taken around the reserves and beaches from November through until the end of March each year. These toys include trampolines, sports equipment, hoola hoops, moon hoppers, preschool toys and more. Something for kids of all ages. Sally says the programme has been going for over 20 years. They started by using the boot of Sally’s car, then a trailer and then to a van. “This Van is by far the best we have ever had. A big thanks to Benefitz for the support with the signage graphics and also to Paul Claney at Hillside Automotive who is servicing the vehicle and keeping it in good running order for us at no cost. Fantastic!” Look out for the Toy Van this summer! For more details visit: http://ecbcp.co.nz/summer-fun/
The van is overflowing with fun toys which are taken around the reserves and beaches from November through until the end of March each year.
NOTE: The East Coast Bays Community Project (Inc.) is a community-based-not-for-profit organisation which has charitable status. The organisation began in 1989 as a group of people in East Coast Bays who wanted to see a Community House established in their community. In 1991, a community worker was employed to assist with this initiative and the society was incorporated in 1992. The Bays Community Centre was opened in May 1992 and for six years the Project also ran a Youth Centre. Today the Project operates from the Bays Community Centre and provides a wide range of community events and activities as well as managing both the Centre and St Annes hall for community use.

CAB BROWNS BAY
It is well known that the CAB services are FREE & that we value client confidentiality. Services are provided to anyone in the community, whether a resident or passing through the area. The Browns Bay volunteers of the CAB assisted 8,611 members of the community from July 2014 to Aug 2015 with advice & interventions. We are fortunate to be able to assist the community with a wide variety of issues. This may range from Tenancy & Housing issues, education, employment disputes, consumer matters, family issues & relationship breakdowns to JP services. Vulnerable members of the community such as women, children, the elderly & people facing financial difficulties have also benefitted through referrals to the appropriate agencies for assistance. Where required, food parcels & financial budgeting advice are arranged for clients in need. We are grateful for the relationship we have built with the Justices of the Peace. A JP is in attendance most week days for 2 hours – Phone to check times. The paperless era of internet based information has seen a change in the availability of free brochures & pamphlets. Information that is not available in printed form will be downloaded to clients, or if possible, it can be emailed to clients. Browns Bay CAB continues to provide settlement information to new migrants & welcomes walk-ins & appointments. Our volunteer base consists of people from different nationalities, such as UK, South African, Chinese, Korean, Malaysian & Israeli to name but a few. Registrations are also available for a series of FREE workshops from Feb to Nov each year. Enquiries for volunteering are always welcomed.
Please note we are closed for the Christmas period from 24 Dec until 4 Jan. We reopen on 5 Jan. Best wishes to all East Coast Bays & Albany residents for a joyous holiday season.

FUN ON THE RAFT AT WAIAKE RESTORE DEEP CREEK
Go to www.TOKO.org.nz/petitions/restore_deep_creek & sign the petition to remove mangroves & mud from Deep Creek. This will increase flushing &remove smells from rotting seaweed. Why is this important? Photographs of 1910 (see below) show that Deep Creek was a beautiful lagoon of at least 4m deep at high tide. Today it is cluttered with mangroves and mud, & smells badly with rotting seaweed debris. The creek exits on to the very popular Waiake Beach, Waiake means ‘Healing waters’) & flows beside a pleasant beach park. A waterfall lies hidden at its headwaters

CELEBRATING BROWNS BAY: Browns Bay People
Celebrating Summer, reflecting on 2015, looking to 2016 and Santa… Christmas is a very special time right across the world. It’s particularly special in Browns Bay with the decorations up, the whole place buzzing and The Plaza and beachfront coming alive. The big Browns Bay Christmas Tree in The Plaza has added a great deal in the past couple of years as well. As we celebrate the festive season we thought we would ask some of our prominent locals a few probing questions about summer in Browns Bay, they year we’ve had and the year ahead and what they’re looking forward to from the big fella when he comes down the chimney...
Shan Moulder, Owner of
The Meat Room in Anzac Road
What do you love about Browns Bay in the Summer? The hum of the village. There always seems to be something happening that makes Browns Bay such a vibrant place to be – all year round actually. What did you really enjoy about 2015? Reaching our fist birthday – the anniversary of The Meat Room. We love being part of the Browns Bay community and locals have embraced us. What are you looking forward to in 2016? A busy year head. Looking to build on all the hard work we have done in 2015 and keep delivering for our loyal customers. What are you wishing for from Santa? Another dog to join our family.
Craig Bidois, Managing Director, Unique Education
What do you love about Browns Bay in the Summer? Browns Bay is such a dynamic and multicultural area – a rich blend of people who come out and enjoy the sunshine, beach, restaurants and shops. What did you really enjoy about 2015? Buying the Unique English Language School in Browns Bay would be by far the high light! What are you looking forward to in 2016? Being in business I think the economic factors are looking encouraging for all – low interest rates, falling New Zealand dollar and increased tourism and migration. If businesses are doing well then everyone can enjoy the benefits What are you wishing for from Santa? Anything from Santa would be nice, but the best gift is that some of our international students will be helping at the City Mission this year, wrapping presents and helping out on Christmas day. 26

Julia Parfitt, Chair of the
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board
What do you love about Browns Bay in the Summer? I love in all seasons of the year walking along Browns Bay beach, then sitting down at one of our many wonderful cafe’s supping a coffee and enjoying the relaxed laid back atmosphere What did you really enjoy about 2015? I really enjoyed travelling to the UK this year to see my oldest son Steven who grew up and was schooled in the Bays, graduate with his PhD. I was so proud of him and what he’d achieved. What are you looking forward to in 2016? In 2016 I’m looking forward to seeing so many of our Bays local board projects finally being completed so that everyone can enjoy them. These include our new Robin Hood themed playground at Sherwood Reserve, our sportsfield complex at Ashley, the replacement wharf at Murrays Bay – with its new toilet block and additional reserve area – and of course the removal of the last house on the Mairangi beachfront allowing the creation of our new beach reserve area there. What are you wishing for from Santa? I’m hoping Santa will deliver a sunny Christmas Day which everyone can enjoy. Including me. Given the tragic events that have happened this year worldwide I hope that the Christmas period is a peaceful one for everyone
Gerhard Augenstein,
owner Augenstein’s Jewellers & Watchmakers in Clyde Road

My girlfriend has convinced me to get into paddleboarding this summer… I’m hopeful Santa will help indulge this new passion (if only to laugh at me falling over off Browns Bay beach!!)
Why does group exercise work??? A common reason given for quitting an exercise program is boredom. A variety of class formats will keep you motivated and interested, you will experience different instructor styles and music selection. Beachside offers 30min – 60min workouts suitable for everybody at any fitness level. Time goes by very quickly when there is music playing and you are being motivated throughout your workout by one of our REPS certified trainers. People stay interested because of the social atmosphere provided by group exercise. This offers camaraderie and accountability among participants, as well as between participants and instructor. As kids, we loved to get together to play with our friends. As teenagers, our world revolved around our friends. As adults, we still enjoy being active with our friends. Sometimes we don’t always feel like we have the time or opportunities to do so. Group exercise provides us with that opportunity to feel young again and to reap the health benefits of exercising in a group environment which can benefit you, your friends and your family. Here at Beachside we pride ourselves on the experience associated with the fun and fitness you get out of our classes... We have the largest selection of group exercise classes in the area, including circuits, kickfit, step, pilates, yoga, abs butts and thighs, zumba, stretch, kettle bell, H.I.I.T training, power bag and battle rope workouts. We asked Liam a few royal questions BB MAG: How did you react when you knew the letter was from Prince Harry? LIAM: It said he was happy that I took the time to write him a letter. BB MAG: What do you like about Prince Harry? LIAM: He’s cool because he has the same colour hair as me and I like his palace! BB MAG: What would you cook him for tea if he was in New Zealand for Christmas? LIAM: Roast chicken and some beef with carrot, potatoes and onion. Anxious About Family Dynamics These Holidays...?
Vivienne Kelly.
Well, here we are a few weeks from Christmas! People are buzzing about enjoying and cursing the weather, squeezing in extra activities, preparing ... It all sounds exciting and fun. But there is a lot of stress and anxiety about that good ol’ family dynamic... (If the family dynamic problem isn’t yours – still read on and adapt this article to your specific needs.) What makes a perfect Christmas; people can be set in their ways; certain personality blends can be explosive; there may even be a tradition of discord with a parent / in law / other person. Based on previous years, it’s predictable it’ll be that way again – leaving you with a secret dread secretly buried deep in the pit of your belly! Just one of the many factors in dealing with the parent / child dynamic, is that everyone forgets to update their age! Often the parent sees the ‘child’ as if they are still that rebellious teenager, and the ‘child’ (who’s actually onto their mid-life crisis already) hasn’t updated their view of the person in front of them either. Oooo, that’s a breeding ground for buttons to be pushed! The bad news is you can’t make that other person be different. The good news is, you can choose how YOU want to BE this time. You are different to the last time you saw that person – physically, mentally, emotionally, you have grown! Let’s have a closer look at that updated version of you: How would you describe the strengths and qualities of that older, wiser you? How would you like to feel in the company of that other person? Where in your life are you already that version of yourself? Wow, what would it be like to feel like that over the holidays this year? Hang on – not that easy. We all have great intentions of being a certain way and then, in a flash, you are triggered and it goes up in smoke. That’s predictable, so your preparation isn’t done yet! What will serve as a reminder, in that moment of ‘danger’, of your chosen state? For example, you could wear a certain colour / item of jewellery that centres you, or drink camomile tea as an intentional trigger to shift your thinking back to who you want to be. Now go have a wonderful, connected, light, fun, relaxed time together!

Rangitoto Swim School
Browns Bay Tennis Club
Rangitoto Swim School in the Heart of Browns Bay Rangitoto Swim School is now into its 15th year of operation. Started by husband and wife team, Peter Simpson and Jane Geldard in 2001. Both have years of experience in the Aquatic industry, so it was only a natural transition to move into owning one of the Top Swim Schools in the heart of the Shore. The Swim School has the reputation for being “The Friendliest Swim School” on the shore. That’s because the swim school is run by a family, for families. The main objectives are what is best for the children and for them to enjoy their swimming experience. Location is key for families, and parents find the parking right outside the door invaluable. Classes are kept small, 4 children is the maximum number in the Learn to Swim Programme, meaning teachers are able to spend a lot of time with each child, encouraging them, improving their technique, and boosting their confidence. Each child also receives their own special Swim Passport which records their progression through each level. The pool is heated to 33 deg to facilitate the baby and toddler groups. Water testing is recorded every 2 hours and the pool equipment is kept in optimum condition. The Swim School changing rooms and main areas of the swim school are heated through the winter months, adding to our families’ requirements. The Swim School also sells googles, caps, boards and swim accessories. If you would like to know more about the Swim School check out our web site, call us on 09 476 2223 or if you are in the area call in and check us out. Our physical address is 444 Anzac Road, Browns Bay.

Cardio Tennis!
On a Thursday in November it was Lights, Camera Action for the coaches and players for Cardio Tennis at Browns Bay Tennis Club. Browns Bay was approached to include our Cardio Tennis sessions within ‘Whānau Living’ – a TV series airing in February 2016 that is filming a segment focusing on alternative ways to keep fit. Our cardio sessions are set up for up to 12 players to compete in an exciting, high-energy interactive workout. The sessions consists of three parts; a 10-15 minute warm up, 30 minute Cardio drills and a 15 minute cool down, all concentrating on maintaining constant movement. Within the 60 minute workout women can burn up to 500 Calories and men up to 800. Specific workout mixes are used within the sessions, with each track having between 120-150 beats per minute to match the intensity of the workout and keep players motivated. Prior to participating within the session all participants were sent consent forms, and filled out key personal details such as their gender, age and weight. This helped to determine their maximum heart rate, that is a key factor within the session as players are expected to work within 70-90 per cent of their maximum heart rate to achieve optimal calorie burn. Each participant wore a HR monitor, which is synced up to the Polar Team app on the iPad, which tracks the heart rate of each player throughout the session. This helps the coach tailor the session to different fitness levels. Within the sessions participants are expected to target different training intensities optimising their work out. Maintaining most of their work out in the Cardio (70 – 84%) and fat-burn zones (50-69% of HRM) and sometimes reaching their peak zone when competing in short duration high intensity exercises reaching over 85% of their maximum HR. After completing the session each player was emailed his or her statistics, e.g. heart rate through out the session. This helps to identify their fitness levels and how to improve for next time. We are currently looking to introduce these New Cardio sessions into our programmes very soon!

Ginger Snap Browns Bay
Ginger Snap The retirement industry has taken advantage of the fact that sons & daughters are now too busy to look after their parents in their later years. They use this fact to drive a business model which asset strips parents who have built up a lifetime of savings. This in turn leaves their children and grand children with little inheritance once the parents have gone. Gingersnap offers an alternative to this business model. If you are thinking about moving to a retirement village call us first. Call Joe on 09 889 2224 or 027 289 2000 to arrange a coffee and a chat at our new premises at…. Even though New Zealand won most of the divisions, sadly, Browns Bay lost its most famous “New Caledonia v New Zealand Squash Challenge Trophy” to the New Caledonian clubs. The result of total games played against New Caledonia was:
BROWNS BAY 14 v 20 NEW CALEDONIA
The competition features players of all ages, from 8 years to 70 years! “We had a huge number of entrants for the competition this year and it was encouraging to see so many young players competing in this international competition. We welcome players of all abilities and ages to join the club and be a part of this marvellous opportunity. Sharing sporting and lifestyle cultures with the New Caledonian players, is greatly helping our younger players”, said Ajay Marwaha, Club Squash Captain. “We need the help and sponsorship of community businesses to encourage more young players to join the club and participate in these types of competitions. Next year, we expect Browns Bay to retrieve the trophy from New Caledonia and we look to YOU to make it happen. Do we have your support?”, said Ajay. The best place to kick off November is in your kitchen garden.
Get your summer vegetables and herbs planted now and enjoy the benefits all summer long!
It’s the perfect time to make sure that your favourite summer vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, sweet corn, spring onions, watermelon and celery are in the ground. Planting basil in amongst your tomato plants will boost the flavour of both plants, as they are perfect companions in the garden as well as on the plate! Tomatoes will benefit from feeding with Thrive Flower & Fruit or Tui Tomato Food, staking and regular watering. You can sow your favourite seeds directly into the garden now, such as pumpkin, courgettes, parsnip, radish and sweetcorn, and for continuous harvesting over the coming months, sow at two to three weekly intervals. Be sure to spray veges with Copper Oxychloride or sulphur to guard against fungus and mildew diseases, and drench all vegetables with Ocean Organics Liquid Seaweed for good growth from the start. Feed your citrus trees with Palmers Citrus Fertiliser - and other fruit trees with Palmers General Garden Fertiliser – and be sure to hang Codling Moth traps in any apple trees to trap the moths and prevent the larvae entering fruit. The most effective control is to spray with Yates Success Ultra Naturalyte every 14 days, as soon as the petal blossoms have fallen. For a lush green lawn even when it’s dry, apply Palmers Lawn Fertiliser when rain is due or water it in with a sprinkler. And remember not to cut the lawn too short from now on, and keep up with weeding using Turf Clean for broad leaf weeds and Prickle Weedkiller to control Onehunga weed for a prickle-free lawn all summer long. And once that lawn is looking good, pop into

Palmers Planet to grab everything you need for the perfect summer backyard. We have a huge range of new seasons furniture in store now including bar settings, capsule hanging chairs, outdoor dining suites and more! And why not treat your family to a new spa pool this summer? We have a great range to choose from ranging from 2 seats up to 7. In the flower garden, plant your favourite summer flowering annual seedlings like Lobelia, Impatiens, Phlox, Larkspur and Portulaca, and place a decent layer of mulch – think compost or bark - around the base of your perennials, trees and shrubs to help conserve moisture during dry spells. All Chrysanthemums and Dahlias are good to plant now, along with colourful water lilies and other pond plants. It’s also the perfect time to add new season’s Hibiscus plants for a real tropical flavour in your garden. You can’t beat the sunny cheer of a colourful hanging basket or terracotta pot, but be sure to invest in Tui Pot Power mix and Saturaid to help them stay moist, as they can dry out very quickly in the hot sun. Using Waterwise Water Storage Crystals mixed in with the potting mix will help retain moisture, and be sure to water all pots daily, preferably in the morning. There’s loads going on this month in the garden and in store! Check out our website: palmers.co.nz/ whats-on to view our upcoming workshops, taste testings and demonstrations. People in the Bays: Anete Smith
A Proud Pink Dragon! Anete Smith is a proud member of the ‘Pink Dragons’ dragon boating team based in Browns Bay. A breast cancer survivor who, after her diagnosis and treatment, wanted to do something positive with her life. She stopped drinking alcohol, changed her diet and joined the dragon boating team. Anete was awarded Team Member of the Year last year. The team have won numerous medals over the years she has been involved, including one very precious gold for the 2km race in 2012. Anete is the recruitment officer for the team. She say it’s always a challenge to find at least 22 women who are breast cancer survivors, reasonably fit and active, and who want to paddle a dragon boat but says they manage it! Her aim is always to have enough paddlers to fill the boat. We had a chat to Anete about her team. Courtney Bennett: Your dragon boating team is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary, how did the team form? Anete Smith: My team 'Pink Dragons' formed out of the first Auckland breast cancer dragon boat team, 'Busting with life'. Too many paddlers meant we could set up a new team and so the 'Pinkies' began. We are still close to 'Busting' but, on race day, they are our competition and we both do all we can to win! CB: Have you always been into sport? AS: No, definitely not. I did the usual school sport but never enjoyed it. Whilst being a Venture Scout in the U, I did kayaking and loved everything about it. I love being on the water and the speed you can get to. Recently my partner and I kayaked the Whanganui river for five days. That was brilliant. CB: What skill is needed for dragon boating? AS: No skill needed at all - just energy and enthusiasm (and perhaps a bit of coordination) We have a fantastic coach, Sooupu Perese, and he teaches everyone what to do. Newbies get great training from him. Even us veterans need reminding now and again. CB: What sort of events do you compete at? AS: We compete at local and regional regattas all through the season; there is usually one a month. We compete against mixed teams, women's teams and breast cancer survivors' teams. It keeps us performing well and hones our competitive edge. We also have fun regattas - the next one is on Milford Beach on the 12th December - where we usually get very wet. CB: Tell readers about the work you do for hospice… AS: I am the Manager of the Milford Hospice Shop on Shakespeare Road. We have just celebrated our first year of trading with a 'Pink Party' where we all wore pink to match our new branding. I love my job. It is so varied, each day is different. We get such great support from the local area with fantastic donations and wonderful volunteers. My background is visual merchandising so I really enjoy

making the shop look as beautiful as possible - all for a great cause, Hospice North Shore. CB: If you had to play another sport, what would it be and why? AS: If I had to, I think I would like something involving kayaks. Maybe racing or slalom. I like the idea of my strength providing the power to speed through the water. But I would rather stick to dragon boating if you don't mind! CB: Does the team have an annual event that you guys look forward to? AS: We always look forward to our regionals and nationals. Our regionals are held at Lake Pupuke and we get to race so many types of teams. Nationals are being held at Ashburton this year and that is the pinnacle of the season. The competition is fierce between the Breast Cancer teams, but we hope to come back with some medals. CB: Aside from winning events, does your team have any other goals? AS: Our main goal is provide inspiration to other women who have had breast cancer. To be a visible display that proves that there can be life after what is always a devastating diagnosis. CB: You’re recruiting for new members for the team, how do local people get involved? AS: If you have had breast cancer, can swim 50 metres, are reasonably fit and are keen to join, call me (details at the end of article). We practice on Tuesday and Thursday nights and also on Sunday mornings after Auckland Anniversary weekend. CB: What’s the best part about being part of the Pink Dragons? AS: There are so many things I love about it: The camaraderie of the team, the fact that we all have had a shared experience that unites us but doesn't define us. I also love the fact that I get to keep fit without having to go to a boring exercise class. CB: In 10 years time, I’ll be… AS: Stronger, fitter and still dragon boating but with more gold medals hanging on my wall. Post-Auction Sales Continues Drive Recent legislation changes to tax residency and investor deposit were headline news in Real Estate. Despite the advance notice, purchasers have taken time to reflect and adjust their strategy. Auction has always been a 3 stage process, allowing opportunity to sell pre-auction, at auction or post-auction. It is still the most popular method and some purchasers are choosing to enter into multi-offers after the auction. The average selling price has continued to increase with a conflicting decline in the median. The Auckland housing boom is rippling to other towns, as sellers are choosing to move to Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington and Nelson. Reducing their loans in the process and upsizing their properties! Auckland is now comparable to other International property markets. The indications are that prices are likely to hold and could be driven by increasing demand of net immigration. It is the job of the market to turn the base material of our emotions into gold ~ Andrei Codrescu Contact: Geraldine Zareian, Barfoot & Thompson, Browns Bay. Dental Hygienists along with other team members are your first line of defence against dental diseases. They are the prevention specialists who are professionally trained to work within the Dental team. Dental Hygienists play an important role in showing patients how best to care for their oral health at home. In people who have bleeding gums - bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream and stick to platelets, which can then form blood clots, interrupting the flow of blood to the heart and triggering a heart attack. Writing in a recent online issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association, they report a study that shows how improving gum health is linked to a clinically significant slower progression of atherosclerosis, the process where plaque builds up in arteries and increases a person's risk of heart disease, stroke and death. Regular cleaning and in some cases deeper scaling (cleaning under the gum) helps prevent tooth decay, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and bone loss (periodontal disease). Having a clean mouth will help you keep your teeth, improve appearance and give you fresher breath. After your visit, teeth will feel cleaner and may appear whiter. A key factor in keeping your mouth healthy is regular attendance. Patients who attend regularly tend to need the least amount of work carried out due to the fact that the mouth remains in a healthy state and problems are picked up early. We are currently offering a discounted price on our already low fees for both dental hygiene appointments and our “Take home whitening” kits, for appointments scheduled with one of our experienced dental hygienists, Annatjie van den Berg or Kazuha Eketone. Education: Long Bay College
Oh, the Places You'll Go! - Dr. Seuss Students at Long Bay College have just returned from a two week trip to Greece and Italy to further their learning in Classical Studies. Year 12 and 13 students Tyla Lorimer, Annie Osborne, Amelia Burgisser and Lucy Waddingham visited Europe along with Head of Classical Studies Dean Thompson. The trip was a co-joint effort with ten students and two teachers from Waitakere College. The group began their travels in Athens, Greece where they visited iconic spots such as the Acropolis and the Agora. Students also marvelled at the masterpieces in the Acropolis Museum and National Archaeological Museum, and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. A short flight took the group to Rome. Students visited many sites including the Colosseum and the Pantheon. There were also day trips to Pompeii and Tivoli. The Long Bay College students also enjoyed trying out many Greek and Italian dishes. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all and it is hoped that another trip will run in 2017. Also over the September school holidays, 16 Long Bay Dance Students travelled to Los Angeles to perform at Disneyland and on Hollywood Boulevard.
