This month the nation has turned its attention to football as host to the FIFA U-20 World Cup. This tournament, which is being described as 'the biggest celebration of global football that New Zealand has ever seen', is deserving of our attention with lots of the action, including the final, right on our doorstep at QBE (North Harbour) Stadium. At SBA we are big football fans, especially since my nephew Deklan Wynne is in the New Zealand squad. I hope you get the chance to observe and enjoy these talented players of the future… which is where SBA comes into play. Our goal is to free our clients up to do the things that matter to them, such as following their favourite sports and enjoying leisure time with their families. We also work with our clients to free them up to focus on managing and developing their businesses instead of working on their accounts and back office functions. Our clients frequently tell me that they want feedback and information from their accountant regarding their options. They want their accountant to be accessible as an extension of their businesses, rather than just annual visits. SBA’s speciality is ‘mum and dad’ companies in this country of small business owners who want a comprehensive, informative service with cost-effective compliance. We use MYOB BankLink and Xero for monthly and annual accounting, and also provide payroll services and company formations. It is crucial that start-ups and small businesses get certainty about fees upfront, giving them some peace of mind. For our standard services we offer fixed prices for all entities and structures - rentals, contractors, sole-traders, companies, partnerships and trusts, ensuring that the meter doesn’t keep running. Call for a consultation or pop in to our Clyde Road office to make an appointment. With over 700 clients in East Coast Bays you might even meet someone at the stadium who uses our services and recommends us! Enjoy the football. SBA Browns Bay – 105 Clyde Road. Phone 478 0202.

Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager
Changing face of Browns Bay Town Centre The last few months have seen the most change in Browns Bay for some time. We have had nine new businesses open on top of the major upgrade to the New World with the opening of its new supermarket in Anzac Road. We have also seen a huge increase in the number of people deciding that Browns Bay is their shopping centre of choice – over 110,000 extra customers came here in the first three months of this year. As one of our senior citizens commented recently, it's nice to see so many families enjoying shopping together in Browns Bay – it's just like our radio jingle says “We’ll always have a good time in Browns Bay”. Yet another developer has confidence in Browns Bay and has plans for another smart apartment complex on site currently occupied by the Beachside Gym and doctors rooms. I am sure we will see even more apartments in the town centre basin due to the exceptional lifestyle on offer. Mothers Day Promotion Winners A BIG thanks to all those customers who took part in our 2015 Mothers Day Promotion. Thanks also for the support of all the businesses who donated the prizes. A Royal day to remember at AUT Millennium A Royal visit was certainly a day to remember for some lucky shore residents as Prince Henry of Wales known as Prince Harry, ventured to the AUT Millennium in Mairangi Bay on Saturday May 15th. Prince Harry's visit was due to his interest in High Performance Sport and he was keen to meet some of New Zealand’s top athletes. High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) has its national centre at AUT Millennium. Welcoming the Prince to this amazing facility were 300 local members of the public, along with the Minister of Sport and Recreation Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman, Sport NZ CEO Peter Miskimmin, HPSNZ CEO Alex Baumann and AUT Millennium CEO Mike Stanley. Top athletes there to meet and greet the prince were All Black Kieran Read, Silver Fern Maria Tutaia, Silver Fern Catherine Latu,

Olympic class sailor Peter Burling, Olympic class Sailor Alex Maloney and 400m hurdler Michael Cochrane. We caught up with a few members of the crowd after Prince Harry mingled among them. Debbie Bonnie – “He was just lovely with the children and asked if they liked Soccer or Football.” Liam Johnson (aged 7) came well prepared for Prince Harry's visit and had thought to hand write him a letter. Liam was delighted that he got the chance to meet him and hand deliver it. We asked Liam what Prince Harry said to him and Liam replied. "I handed Prince Harry a letter and he said 'What is this?’ and I replied 'It’s a letter’ and Prince Harry said "Thank you very much." A little girl from the crowd, Maddison Hailes had waited patiently to give Prince Harry a teddy bear. Luckily she got her chance and I am sure she was thrilled to speak to a real prince.

ANZAC Day in Browns Bay The attendance at Anzac Day services has been growing over the years as our involvement in foreign wars and the overall numbers of actual war veterans is declining. This year with the lead up to Anzac being heavily promoted in the media we expected an even bigger turnout and this year and there was, much bigger! It was estimated that there was three to four thousand people at the beachfront in Browns Bay for the dawn service on the 25th. The parade of ex-service and regular force personal was huge and the crowd was so great that it spilled over onto the beach. The later citizen’s service for youth groups, the community and schools was equally as large and

what was really nice was to see so many young people wearing grandparents medals. They would have been pleased and proud to have them see the sunshine once more, instead of lying forgotten at the bottom of a drawer! It was heartwarming to see so many people turning out to this year’s ANZAC Day in Browns Bay and all to commemorate the lives and achievements of thousands of our countryman who went to war for us. It’s great that those old photographs can be brought to life and remembered at least once a year. – By Geoff Ockleston - Vice president of the Browns Bay Returned Services Association (RSA)

New World Browns Bay: Seafood Department
Nothing beats fresh seafood! With the opening of the new, New World Browns Bay, the Seafood department has increased in size enabling the fresh offering to grow and introduce new exciting products. Liam Thompson is the Seafood Manager for New World Browns Bay and has a vast amount of knowledge in seafood and is passionate about delivering a high standard of customer service. ‘I enjoy interacting with the customers I serve, helping customers with ideas and also listening to what they have to say too’. A particular highlight is the new serve-over counter, ‘we are trying to introduce something new to the public. We can also offer different fresh products like our seafood salads, raw fish and salmon mignons which we just didn’t have the space to do before’. The bigger space also allows for new ideas and a greater range of seafood to satisfy customer demand.

Liam Thompson, Seafood Manager at New World Browns Bay.
How can Liam help you? ‘That’s what I’m here for, to help! I will try my best to pass on all my knowledge on the product and point customers in the right direction to what they are after.’ Liam’s top meal tip: ‘Nothing beats a fresh piece of fish, particularly Snapper, baked in the oven seasoned with herbs and lemons, and then simply serve with a salad.’ Liam’s favourite product in the department: ‘Salmon Mignons are a favourite! The customers love them so if you haven’t tried them I highly recommend them! They are definitely one to impress.’ Come in and check out the new Seafood Department for yourself at New World Browns Bay and as Liam says ‘We have a wide array of fresh products here at New World and FRESH is always best!!’ New World Browns Bay 2 Inverness Road, Browns Bay (Easy access from Anzac Road).

Interview: with Julia Parfitt, Chair, Hibiscus and Bays Local Board
Experience the key for Julia and her local board team In local body politics Julia Parfitt could be described as a safe pair of hands. The experienced Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair has been in local body politics on the Shore since 1989, around 26 years. Firstly on the East Coast Bays Community Board until 1995 and then as a councillor on the North Shore City Council until the amalgamation in 2010. She served as deputy mayor during that final term. Since 2010 Julia has been the chair of the local board, that covers both the Bays and the Hibiscus Coast area – with four board members from each area. Julia lives in Murrays Bay with her husband Graham (who has also done a stint on the previous East Coast Bays City Council in the past) and they have two grown sons, Steven and David, who are in their twenties.
Aidan Bennett sat down for a mid-term chat and put these questions to her at Beach Café in Browns Bay in late May.
8
www.brownsbay.org.nz
AIDAN BENNETT: How well has the local board been working as a team during this term? JULIA PARFITT: I would describe us as a very soundly functioning cohesive board. There is a great deal of experience so there is an understanding that we need to work together to achieve our goals. For that reason we are probably not ‘good colourful copy’ for the newspapers. AB: What are the key achievements that have been made in terms of Browns Bay and the Bays area? JP: Over the last four years we have brought together the Local Board Area Plan. This has included looking at the town centre and how it will develop but building on the foundations of past work. Some specific achievements have included improving the drainage of the village green and generally making it more usable for the community with power outlets for events. We have done some good work around the library, improving vegetation and making it more accessible. There have also been improvements to the Leisure Centre – such as the roof and a new children’s playground, that have resulted in increased patronage. The Leisure Centre is on the board’s balance sheet so it is important that it is operating well. We have also worked well with the Browns Bay Markets and Coastguard which has produced results for the community in terms of providing funding for such projects as upgrading on the Torbay and Sherwood playgrounds. We are also lucky to have a very active youth council who are doing great things, with the Pheonix Plaza upgrade being one example. AB: What key things are still to be achieved? JP: As a board we have an entrepreneurial streak that has been conscious of the need to work with others to achieve cost effective solutions. We have a challenge ahead to complete the Town Centre Plan and have just had an audit from BeAccessible, a group that focusses on
accessibility issues, to ensure that as a town centre we are catering for people of all ages and abilities. There is alot of development currently under way or planned for the Browns Bay area and our challenge is to ensure that we retain the “village feel” that people have told us they want to protect as part of our Unitary Plan consultation process. It is great to see that many locals are embracing that by choosing when they downsize an apartment lifestyle in Browns Bay. I am told that many of these apartments are being purchased by locals. AB: What do you enjoy about the role? JP: I have always enjoyed working with people and I love the area; having lived here all of my life. I know the area well, having been born and bred in the Bays and teaching locally in Browns Bay until recently. It amazes me how many people have lived in the Bays area all their life. I guess it is pretty special so there are not too many reasons to leave! AB: What do you find most challenging about the role? JP: Lack of funding is always a challenge. Probably the biggest issue of the past few years is working with the new council governance and management system and ensuring that people understand which areas are looked after by which departments of council. I would get around five to 10 emails a day from people wanting to know where they go for certain things, as a great deal has changed. AB: Is the Auckland 'Super City' concept working from your perspective and for Browns Bay and the Bays? JP: I am forever an optimist! It is working better now than it was in year one but we still have a way to go. There are still many residents who would like to be part of a smaller entity. AB: In general, what good things are you seeing happening in Browns Bay? JP: Although there has been some incredible change I believe people still do feel like they are part of a real community. People
can embrace change or battle it. Our job is to ensure that people feel that despite change they still have control of their lives. Then it works. It certainly helps that as a board we have a great deal of experience, that we have a good understanding of the needs of Browns Bay and its people and therefore can tackle the challenges ahead. Where our experience has proved invaluable is with the recent Long Term Plan exercise. We have been able to get concessions due to our knowledge of the process. For example we have managed to get funds from locally sourced development contributions spent locally. This essential in an area that is experiencing so much development. Previously these funds could be spent across the whole Auckland Region. AB: What can Browns Bay as a town centre do better? JP: We need to build on the sense of space. Browns Bay has fabulous bones and that village feel I have talked about and that our people love. We need to work on the connectivity of the area, ensuring that we make it an even better place to come and enjoy. We need to continue to encourage private investment, and redevelopment and upgrades with the supermarket chains for example. Recently we have also been working closely with Vector to ensure that the power is adequate because it quite clearly wasn’t for many in southern Browns Bay during the power failure. As a result I believe Vector has developed a good plan for this. AB: Answer the following – At the end of the term I will be happy if we have…. JP: An updated Town Centre Plan for Browns Bay, that can build on previous work that has been done, but caters well for the future that is ahead of us.

Have you ever wondered what the benefits are of having regular facials? As a skin professional let me share with you some of the key benefits. 1. A facial increases circulation of the blood under the skin, allowing the skin optimal health. This helps to facilitate the renewal of skin cells. 2. A good facial with facial massage can help smooth fine lines and promote collagen production, which are the building blocks of our skin. This helps to prevent premature aging, wrinkles and sagging. 3. A facial will cleanse the pores on a much deeper level and provide a much deeper exfoliation than you can achieve at home. Exfoliation smooths the skin and allows for better product penetration. 4. A facial can help even out skin tone and lighten dark spots. Dark spots visibly age our skins appearance. No matter how great the facial, you will still need to apply sun block. Tasty Treats: Little Greece Greek Deli
The Meat Room: Browns Bay
Magical Powers at Little Greece!
Sink your teeth into... THE MEAT ROOM
Handmade soap from olive oil is a rare modern treat, directly traceable to ancient cultures. Throughout history there are many references to the use of soap. The Greeks and Romans however used olive oil for their personal hygiene, smearing their bodies in olive oil and sand and afterwards removing the mixture along with the dirt with a ‘strigil’. Luckily in today’s modern society we do not have to go to that extreme but can now enjoy locally, handmade soaps from ‘Little Greece’ in Browns Bay. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E which is a natural protector of the skin and when made into soap olive oil has a natural ability to mix with water and go deeply into the pores of your skin giving it a wonderful cleansing that rarely happens with other soap. Try one of these for yourself and you will be pleasantly surprised by the mildness and skin soothing properties. So, olive oil it turns out is good for your body on the inside and out!

All the very best in new seasons roses, camellias and rhododendrons are arriving, and the most unusual and interesting of the bunch are often released first so don’t miss out on the very best of the selection available. For those with edible gardens, start planting new fruit trees like citrus, apples, pears, plums, peaches and nectarines. Now is the perfect time to prune trees that have finished fruiting, so cut stems back to a healthy growing bud and seal the cuts on larger stems with a pruning paint to protect against disease. Be sure to keep your secateurs and loppers clean with white spirits, as this will prevent the transfer of any diseases, and nice and sharp tools for neater cuts.

now’s the time to plant and our new seasons seedlings start arriving in June. It may seem early, but planting strawberries now will get them well established so they will fruit earlier and for longer so is totally worth the effort. Here’s a handy tip: plant five strawberry plants per person in your household, this will ensure there will be enough juicy sweet berries at harvest time for everyone! Flower lovers can use the month of June for planting seedlings of Alyssum, Forget-menot, Pansies, Viola, Polyanthus, Primula, Poppy, Sweetpea, Cyclamen, Hollyhock, Lobelia, Sweet William, Anemone, Candytuft and Bellis Daisy, and make sure to throw some Quash or Blitzem granules around to protect these delicate young plants from slugs and snails. The Life Coach: Vivienne Kelly, Momentum Life Coaching & Training
Customising Your Career as a Working Parent Do you want to be an awesome parent AND have a fulfilling career? It is possible! There are ways to CUSTOMISE your career and home, literally to have the best of both worlds. Customise your career choice – Go Vivienne Kelly. grab a large piece of paper to get those thoughts down: 1. Be clear on your personal and career values and needs /criteria before even trying to give your new career a title. For example, some of my non-negotiable values and criteria are ‘working from the heart’ and making a difference; growth – my own and the people I work with; time flexibility, so I can be afternoon taxi; working close to home, so I don’t waste travelling time; a generous hourly rate, to accommodate working fewer hours... Write down all of your ‘ideal job criteria’ – no job titles allowed, just criteria. 2. Another crucial factor is to align your work with your natural abilities and passions. The more you enjoy your work, the more it actually energises you, not drains you! You’ll have a quality you to offer your family! Observe what you’re doing when you’re feeling alive. Brainstorm all the things you love doing (don’t worry about how to make money from it.) just write it all - Don’t edit or analyse as you scribble. 3. This is the REALLY INTERESTING part. Deal with the guilt. What kind of parent would you actually be if you had a fulfilling and flexible career? List the benefits to you and your family. e.g. I’m modelling how to be successful, fulfilled, happy, balanced and available, both emotionally and physically. I’m honouring what’s important to me. (That’s an attitude you’d be passing on to your kids, which will be useful in their lives...) 4. Now start considering job titles that fit what you’ve written down or even invent your own ideal career. Let ideas just flow to you as you go about your week... Opportunities will appear once you are clear! I see proof of that all the time!
Urban & Electric Bikes: Bute Bikes
Exciting Times in the ebike world Just as rapid progress is being made in the development of electric cars and trucks, things are moving fast in the world of electric assisted bicycles. As more and more people become aware of ebikes and what they can do, the demand is increasing and as always the pressure to develop and improve. We at Bute Bikes are lucky to have our own design team who have been extremely busy over the last 18 months with two new projects, the Electric 2wd farm bike to be released at Mystery Creek Fieldays in June, and two brand new models, an off road electric mountain bike with some exciting new features not seen on any other products as yet, and a detuned version designed for urban use. The sale and use of ebikes in general has continued to ramp up as more and more frustrated and overtaxed travellers become aware of them. Although the majority of our clients are motivated more by the recreational benefits and ease of use, we expect to see New Zealand follow the overseas trend to adapt to 2-wheel electric transport as a viable way of getting around, avoiding traffic snarl-ups and saving money. We have a large shipment of smartmotion ebikes due to arrive in early June which will be a relief to Bute Bike customers and our nationwide dealers as we have again sold out of popular models. Please come in and have a look at what we have to offer, the building is a bit shabby, but the bikes are very smart! We love to introduce people to ebikes with a riding lesson with, of course, no strings attached. Just wear some sturdy shoes and something warm as you never get hot and sweaty on an ebike, not even in summer! Butes Bikes – 17 Bute Road, Browns Bay. Phone 479-9274. Open 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday, until 3pm Saturday.

Family Dental Care: Greville Dental
Rangitoto Swim School
Rangitoto Swim School in the Heart of Browns Bay Rangitoto Swim School is now into its 15th year of operation. Started by husband and wife team, Peter Simpson and Jane Geldard in 2001. Both have years of experience in the Aquatic industry, so it was only a natural transition to move into owning one of the Top Swim Schools in the heart of the Shore. The Swim School has the reputation for being “The Friendliest Swim School” on the shore. That’s because the swim school is run by a family, for families. The main objectives are what is best for the children and for them to enjoy their swimming experience. Location is key for families, and parents find the parking right outside the door invaluable. Classes are kept small, 4 children is the maximum number in the Learn to Swim Programme, meaning teachers are able to spend a lot of time with each child, encouraging them, improving their technique, and boosting their confidence. Each child also receives their own special Swim Passport which records their progression through each level. The pool is heated to 33 deg to facilitate the baby and toddler groups. Water testing is recorded every 2 hours and the pool equipment is kept in optimum condition. The Swim School changing rooms and main areas of the swim school are heated through the winter months, adding to our families’ requirements. The Swim School also sells googles, caps, boards and swim accessories. If you would like to know more about the Swim School check out our web site, call us on 09 476 2223 or if you are in the area call in and check us out. Our physical address is 444 Anzac Road, Browns Bay.

Optometry with Nicholls and Associates
The dark side of blue light Like most of us I am concerned with how many hours I spend each day looking at digital screens, and my kids are on their devices for even longer! Computers, tablets or phone screens are bright and look great, but unfortunately most of them emit a high energy and potentially harmful blue-violet light. Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum, and is closely related to UV light which we know is damaging. While some blue light wavelengths are beneficial, helping to regulate our everyday sleep cycle and keeping us energised and alert, the shorter wavelength blue-violet light is harmful to our eyes. A paper published by the American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports that "the blue rays of the spectrum seem to accelerate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) more than any other rays in the spectrum. Also of concern is that chronic exposure to blue light at night can lower the production of melatonin (the hormone that regulates sleep), and disrupt our circadian rhythm.
While some blue light wavelengths are beneficial, helping to regulate our everyday sleep cycle and keeping us energised and alert, the shorter wavelength blue-violet light is harmful to our eyes.
Our optometrists: Karen Burke, Chelsey Wood, Bruce Nicholls and Germaine Joblin.
What can we do? Nicholls Optometrists is now able to offer a solution to the problem of harmful blue-violet light. We have a new lens treatment available that filters out these harmful rays. Lenses treated with Crizal Prevencia provide the most complete protection for eye health. Crizal Prevencia clear lenses use an exclusive technology to selectively filter out harmful blue-violet and UV light, while allowing essential light to pass through to preserve your vision and overall wellbeing. If you are concerned come in for a chat and view a sample or call to book an appointment to see one of our optometrists on 479 2316. As an introductory offer Nicholls Optometrists are offering a free upgrade from standard Anti-Reflection coatings to the new Crizal Prevencia. Offer valid until 31st August 2015. I Love What I Do: Sally Cargill
Sally - at the Community’s Service! Sally Cargill is the long-serving Community Coordinator for East Coast Bays Community Project, having started the role in 1991. She grew up in Whangarei and went to Victoria University in Wellington before coming to ‘The Bays' in 1983. Prior to her role as community coordinator, Sally had been heavily involved in Playcentre when her children were small and was also on the Boards of Sherwood School and Long Bay College. Her children now both live overseas, with her son living in Sydney and her daughter and two grandchildren in Illinois, USA. Courtney Bennett: Give readers a brief overview about what you do in your role at ECBCP? Sally Cargill: Events organisation, community networking, neighbourhood development, and support for community groups. Anything that helps build a strong, cohesive community. I see myself as a resource person for the community. Bring your idea to me and let’s see if we can make it happen! CB: What’s the best part about your job? SC: Never knowing how my day’s going to go. I’m an organiser, so I make lists, but most days get hijacked so not much gets crossed off! But it doesn’t matter, perhaps tomorrow will go as planned. I love the spontaneity, the opportunities that just pop up and the ability to be responsive. CB: Why are you passionate about Browns Bay? SC: Quite simply, it’s the best place in the world…the beach, the boardwalk, the village green, the cafes, the shops and the people. CB: Who are your local community heroes? SC: The many people who work behind the scenes keeping our community groups functioning. CB: What do you like about living on the Shore? SC: Everything! It’s totally paradise. It’s like being on holiday permanently. There is such a different vibe here from anywhere else. CB: What do you enjoy most about being part of the Browns Bay community? SC: Just stopping in the street and chatting to people. Walking into a shop and being greeted by name. Walking into a café where they know my coffee order. I feel like I belong here.

Sally Cargill and Debbie Russell – the Bays Community Centre team.
CB: What events are most popular with the local community? SC: Anything that involves food and music. The kids love the Summer Fun programme, the oldies love their Garden Party, everyone loves the Christmas Parade. Cairo to Cape Town is the biggest event and I love working with the South African community for that one. CB: What events do you have coming up that people should come along to? SC: At this time of year, we’re busy doing funding applications for the next round of events, accountability reports for the last round and catching up on the paperwork. Summer Fun starts again on November 1 then it’s full-on till the end of March. CB: What do you do in your spare time? SC: I love to spend time with my brother and sister and their families, there’s an annual visit to Sydney and to USA to see my kids. I’m also a member of Browns Bay Rotary so that involves a number of community activities as well as regular social events. Winter’s here and homes sell fast on Auckland’s North Shore There are plenty of For Sale signs up around the North Shore and the housing market seems determined as ever to move forward and maintain a somewhat steady pace through the winter months. According to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, Auckland’s median house price from April 2014 to 2015 is up by 18%, suggesting that the strong price movements in Auckland and in particular on the North Shore are been driven by high demand from all types of property. You will be interested to know that the most recent statistics from Immigration New Zealand is reporting an annual net gain of migrants. There was a record high of 56,800 in the April 2015 year compared to that of 34,400 in the April 2014 year! Reflecting on the last year’s winter housing market, I was surprised to see such a large amount of buyers active at that time. In view of this I would suggest to vendors that winter can be a great time to sell their home, some record sale prices were achieved in winter last year on the North Shore and I feel buyers may have adopted a different view when it comes to purchasing a home. Our winter conditions help buyers as they simply like to see houses in their worst state. Things to know about … If you are you thinking about selling your home there are many things to consider and the first thing to do is to talk to your family and make sure you have an idea or a plan in place e.g know where you are going to. Finding a Salesperson to achieve a premium result for your house sale that you can work with and trust, I believe this is the key to a successful sale. Give me a call and I can guide you through the complexity of selling your home and give you top tips to help you achieve the best results. Paying tax, do you need to pay tax on my property? The IRD Website is a good place to start www.ird.govt.nz/property however I would recommend that you seek your accountant’s advice in this regard. The Prime Minister John Key has just proposed a plan to improve tax compliance within the property sector, published 17th of May 2015, Inland Revenue Department website reads.
These may come into effect from the 1st of October • A New Zealand IRD number will be required as part of the land transfer process. • As part of the land transfer process, non-resident buyers and sellers must also provide their tax identification number from their home country. • Non-residents will also need a New Zealand bank account before they can get an IRD number in order to buy a property. • Gains from residential property sold within two years of purchase will be taxed, unless the property is the seller’s main home, inherited from a deceased estate or transferred as part of a relationship property settlement. • An extra Budget allocation for Inland Revenue work investigating property compliance, aggressive tax planning and hidden economy initiatives. Reserve Bank announces new LVR restrictions on Auckland housing The New Zealand Reserve Bank website article from the 13th of May 2015 states that that there will be LVR Restrictions (lending to Value Ratio) from the 1st of October. In response to the growing housing market risk in Auckland, the Reserve Bank is today announcing proposed changes to the loanto-value ratio (LVR) policy. The policy changes, proposed to take effect from 1 October, will: • Require residential property investors in the Auckland Council area using bank loans to have a deposit of at least 30 percent. • Increase the existing speed limit for high LVR borrowing outside of Auckland from 10 to 15 percent, to reflect the more subdued housing market conditions outside of Auckland. • Retain the existing 10 percent spend limit for loans to owneroccupiers in Auckland at LVRs of greater than 80 percent. For further information on this, talk to your bank or lending broker to find out how this could affect you. Education: Long Bay College
Success for Long Bay College at Orienteering Championships Long Bay College has added yet another trophy to its collection after an outstanding performance from the boys’ team at the Auckland Schools Individual Orienteering Championships at Woodhill Forest in Auckland. With a total of four podium finishes, the team won the Top School trophy for boys. Cameron de L’Isle fought back from injury to earn a convincing win in the Senior Boys division while Daniel Monkton finished in first place in the Intermediate Boys category.
This was a great performance from a team that has grown in just a few years… In the Junior Boys grade Alex Monkton just missed out on giving Long Bay College a clean sweep of the boys’ grades by a small margin of eight seconds. Liam Watkins Starrs came home in a very credible third place. This was a great performance from a team that has grown in just a few years’ from a couple of students with no regional or national success, to now be considered nationally as one of the top New Zealand secondary schools orienteering team.
Once upon a time… Long Bay College drama students have been performing their own little twist on classic fairy tales. The Year 11 students wrote, directed and performed in their own plays based on stories from the Brothers Grimm. The Twisted Tales production included adaptations of Iron Hans, Ashputtel and Snow White and students had the challenge of not only performing, but also costuming themselves. The Wicked Queen and Iron Hans outfits were an incredible sight, displaying the creativity and imagination that is evident throughout the Performing Arts Faculty at Long Bay College. The Year 13 students will soon bring their productions to the stage – one a classic melodrama and the other a gritty character piece. All plays are performed in the revamped auditorium at the school, which now has remodelled seating and staging and an art gallery in the foyer.

Students turn up the volume at Music Camp Students in the Choir and Big Band at Long Bay College fine-tuned their fantastic skills at the annual music camp at Shakespear Lodge in Whangaparaoa. This is the second year the music camp has been held, providing the groups with vital time together as they prepare for upcoming competitions. Voxette is the top choir group at Long Bay College with 25 students and will compete at “The Big Sing” at the Auckland Town Hall this month (June). The Big Sing is a dynamic, national group singing competition that is a highlight of the secondary school music calendar each year. This year, more than 8000 young people are taking part in regional festivals nationwide. The Big Band has its main competition, the KBB Music Festival, in August. Since 1983, the KBB Music Festival has been showcasing the best in secondary school orchestras, concert bands and stage bands in Auckland.
Bays Martial Art Academy
Kaipatiki Project Beach Clean Up
Protecting and enhancing our urban streams It’s all about confidence Hibiscus and Bays Local Board are working Empowering local kids and teens for nearly 10 years, Bays Martial Art Academy is not just about punching and kicking. With programs ranging from traditional martial arts through to Krav Maga Self Defence, Bully workshops and Movie Style tricking the team is focused on working with parents to give their child the best martial art choice and experience to improve confidence, meet new friends, stay healthy and of course have fun in a safe environment. “What people love is that we run age specific developmental classes with a weekly mat chat and specific theme for each week that is designed to engage and empower students. Ranging from the super popular 3-4 year old parent and child class through to the teen only Krav Maga class there is certainly an option for everyone across our 30 classes each week.” says Caroline Hazelden, school owner and Chief Instructor. “It is amazing to watch some of our youngest students who joined us right at the beginning to now take leadership roles in our academy as they encourage, empower and teach the next generation.” Says Caroline. You may have seen the Bays Martial Art Academy Kung Fu Panda mascot out and about in your community so look out for him over the school holidays around Browns Bay. with the local community to protect and enhance urban streams in the East Coast Bays area. Most streams in the East Coast Bays have been lined with concrete or channelled into pipes. This makes the remaining sections of natural stream even more important and precious.
The local board’s ‘Love our Bays’ project involves planting native plants on stream banks and encouraging residents to take action to care for streams on their own property and help to prevent litter and other pollutants from entering streams and flowing to the sea. The best way to manage a stream is to let nature do the work. As part of the Love our Bays initiative, the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is supporting community planting days to enhance the riparian margins of the streams that flow into Rothesay Bay, Long Bay, Mairangi Bay and Waiake Beach. The planting days will demonstrate the best way to manage a stream through the right selection of plants which help stabilise the bank and reduce erosion, create shade and enhance the stream habitat. There will be fun and educational activities for children and a free sausage sizzle at the end for all helpers. To find out more about the locations and dates of the planting days visit the Auckland Council website and search “Love our Bays”. Hibiscus and Bays residents are also eligible for free advice and support to help them care for streams in their own backyards. The local board funded assistance programme offers private property owners assistance to get started on stream bank restoration including a free on-site consultation with an expert advisor from Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre, information on the best species to plant, advice on effective weed control, and free weed stump gel and 25 free native plants. Big crowd for Trivial Pursuit night at the Bays Club Rotary Browns Bay recently held a very successful trivial pursuit night at the Bays Club and raised $4,800 for Cyclone relief in Vanuatu. Included in this generosity was $1,500 from the 'auctioning' of time at a Club member's house at Mangawhai.
Over 110 participated with the perennially strong Milford team (one of their three) winning by a slender margin.
Paul Martin has had an interest in bees since he was aged 13 – at that time on his property at Karori in Wellington. An old letter box started his interest and he travelled to Paraparaumu to buy his first hive and the interest has remained. Until recently bee keeping has been reasonably straight forward but now with the Paul Martin. Varroa mite causing havoc it's not quite so easy. Murray Allison of Browns Bay Rotary reports that he and fellow Rotarians are treated to Paul's tasty honey on a regular basis.
Participants included two Rotary Clubs from North Harbour and Milford, champion Shore Probus members from Torbay and Long Bay Baptist and Bays Community Housing Trust supporters. Over 110 participated with the perennially strong Milford team (one of their three) winning by a slender margin. The Bays Housing Trust is to be the next beneficiary from the next Rotary quiz night scheduled for Monday May 25 again at the Bays Club.
Browns Bay Rotary meets at 7am at the Bays Club, Browns Bay, on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of each month. If you are interested in joining contact Murray: Email: M.allison23@xtra.co.nz
