How and when to call the Police...

From the community Constable

How and when to call the Police has been the subject of some debate lately, so this is a timely reminder on how and when to contact us in the event you witness Antisocial, Criminal or Traffic offending. I regularly hear – "I thought it had to be a life and death emergency to call 111" No! It does not have to reflect a scene from The Godfather to justify a call to 111. The Police’s role is to prevent a situation from becoming a life and death event and we rely on you as guardians of our community to make the right call to us at the right time. Your idea of an emergency will almost certainly be different to mine. So my message - Let our call takers decide. If you genuinely think the Police need to be informed then dial 111. When to call Police is the other issue. At the time it is happening is the best time to call us. Don’t save your calls for Monday morning as we do not operate a discount incentive scheme for historical bulk reporting. The delay in reporting may only increase the chances of your initial concerns becoming that “Life and Death Emergency “ or enabling the offenders time to escape. You will not be critisised for dialing 111 if you genuinely believe a matter should be reported to the Police. Dial 111 – it’s just a number. You can also call your local station on 477-5000 for advice or information. Until next time - Safer Communities Together.

Entertainment on the Plaza Stage Thanks to all the local entertainers who have provided such a diverse range of entertainment on the Plaza stage. It is great to see the stage being used so frequently. We have had the stage used every weekend since November and looking at our booking schedule, it is booked up to the end of May for every weekend. There are many entertainers using it during the week now also. So if you would like to showcase your talent there, please contact us on 489-9833 to book a time. Most of the entertainers are performing for the ‘love of it’, so if you like their performance, I’m sure you will let them know as they just add to the vibrancy of our wonderful town centre. As our radio jingle says – ‘You’ll always have a good time in Browns Bay”. I often have pleasure seeing people sitting in the Plaza just chilling out to the music. Some of our regular entertainers are: SamRB; Tweed; 2 Flat Whites; Gabrielle; Palz.

SBA Small Business Accounting Browns Bay

Make time for the things that matter If you want to review your accounting call Craig Bright at SBA Browns Bay. Now in their seventh year at 105 Clyde Road, this local accounting team will make your The SBA Browns Bay team – Ingrid Smith, transition easy allowing Marcia Fraser, Craig Bright and Kim Murdoch. you to concentrate on your business instead of your back office. Clients frequently tell Craig that they want feedback and information from their accountant regarding their options. They want their accountant to be accessible as an extension of their business, rather than just annual visits. SBA’s speciality is ‘mum and dad’ companies, small businesses whose owners want a comprehensive, informative service with cost-effective compliance. SBA uses MYOB BankLink and Xero for monthly and annual accounting. It also provides payroll services and company formations. Fixed prices are available for all entities - rentals, contractors, sole-traders, companies, partnerships and trusts. “Fixing our fees for standard services ensures that the meter doesn’t keep running. It’s crucial that small businesses and start-ups get certainty upfront, giving them peace of mind,” says Craig. With important tax dates approaching, NOW is the ideal time to review your accounting needs and take action. 2014 Terminal Tax payments are due on 7 April and the third instalment of 2015 Provisional Tax and 31 March GST returns are due on 7 May. If you’d like to free up more time for the things that matter most (like fishing(!)), let Craig and his team at SBA Browns Bay look after your back office. Introducing the Deli Manager, Amber Cunliffe – She’s worked in the Deli department at New World for 10 years and knows her stuff! “Ever since I began working in this department I find different ways of expressing my creative side as well as my love of food to the customers, who really appreciate and enjoy it. Seeing Amber Cunliffe. a customer’s reaction to the amazing food that we have created as a team is what I strive for,” says Cunliffe. The new, New World Browns Bay has plenty of space, meaning more products, more variety and easier access for customers. “The customers really get to enjoy the fresh food side of things which is what I think it should be all about. Eating Out: St Pierre's Sushi

Cam Calkoen: Bending Perceptions, Inspiring Change

Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.

Sushi of the day deal a big hit - even for dinner! At St Pierre’s Browns Bay So what’s been popular at the new Browns Bay St Pierre’s Sushi store? The Sushi of the Day deal has been super popular according to manager Takashi Kitamura, closely followed by Teriyaki Chicken on Rice – with that yummy Japanese mayo. One of the most surprising features of the Browns Bay store is the popularity of sushi for dinner. “Its not unusual for the dinner rush to be busier than the lunch rush some days," says Takashi Kitamura. Sushi is quick, healthy and an easy dinner that all kids love. Even the fussiest little ones can find something they like. The kids sushi range, which starts from $2.30 for 4 pieces, is great for the little ones. Then slowly as their taste buds develop they move on to the more complex flavours like chicken and avocado or salmon and avocado.” Party platters proved very popular for St Pierre's over the summer too, with weekends being especially busy for these. They are great value and a platter or two put in front of the guests before a barbecue, dinner party, or drinks is a great appetiser that most people enjoy. St Pierre’s import all their own ingredients for making their sushi (nori, wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce etc). It's important to use top quality traditionally prepared ingredients," advises Takashi Kitamura. "Nowadays, items like soy sauce are chemically produced, which St Pierre’s is against. We only use naturally brewed soy sauce that we import ourselves. These are the areas we don’t compromise on." "Our soy sauce, nori, and sushi vinegar suppliers have a combined history of over 600 years. That’s the flavour and experience we want our customers to enjoy." St Pierre’s recently opened another store in Albany next to Burger Fuel. St Pierre’s Browns Bay – Unit 2, 26-28 Anzac Road (the new development next to Countdown). Open 8am to 8pm daily. Visit their website: www.stpierres.co.nz for more info on their products. 12

Clarifying 'dream the dream' I often use the term ‘dream the dream’ so I thought it was time to clarify what I mean by it in my work as a speaker: In our sleeping dreams anything is possible, so why not make this the case in our waking dreams. If you’ve never started or attempted something one thing’s for sure, you wont be very good at it. Nothing and no one is excluded from a dream. In a dream anything is possible. To be on a safari in Africa - or falling in love whilst flying with wings over the Niagara falls in Canada – or entering a Pharos tomb - or fending off tigers on the London underground. At no point in your sleeping dreams does the intellect or ‘self ‘ kick in and ask the devastating question we constantly ask ourselves in waking time. “How good am I at this?” I often share with my audiences my personal experience at school: In my classes I was being given an amazing opportunity… In Science class I could feel what it felt like to BE a Physicist, in Math a Mathematician, in English a Poet etc. So when the list for the school sports day came around for us students to put our names down for an event I didn’t ask myself “how good am I at it” I simply experienced for a moment how it must feel to BE a fabulous athlete, (perhaps its worth mentioning here that due to my Cerebral Palsy walking, co-ordination and certainly running were not my strong points) Had I taken the first option (I’m not very good at this) life would have take a different course… very different. All I had to do was turn up on the day in order to take the first step as an athlete. There is not an athlete in this world who has not experienced defeat, frustration, pain of physical injury, embarrassment, solitude, fear etc. in short:- all the things that we generally allow to stop us dead in our tracks. This is where the waking-self trips us up and brings us crashing down to fail at the thought of attempt. But to cast these aside, to BE the athlete, to BE IN the dream, to at least begin to attempt your waking dream is what makes the heart beat a little faster, for me at least it is what turns life into living. So don’t allow ‘what we’re good at’ to determine our future, but be in the dream and with the necessary hard work, dedication and practice the dream will build you. www.camcalkoen.com

“ The essence of community, its heart and soul, is the selfless exchange of value; things we do and share because we care for others, and for the good of the place ” Dee Hock This Easter, the team at beach.bistro wants to highlight some of our favourite community ‘heroes’ that give unselfishly to brighten the lives of others. Mr Choi, Nam Kyu

You may have seen him, the dapper Korean with the infectious smile, who has added colour and charm to Browns Bay for years. At 93 years young, he epitomises the giving spirit, many a morning he will buy a coffee for the street sweeper or the rubbish truck driver or even a couple of Malaysian tourists.

Do You Ignore Your Posture? By Joanne Hornsby at Physio4all

If you have ever built a house you will know the importance of securing good solid foundations so that you don’t experience problems with the rest of the house. The same relates to your body. Poor posture, lack of stability and incorrect movement habits often lead to complications down the line such as: • Tight, stiff, achy muscles and joints • Fatigue • Inability to move properly • Poor digestion, • Altered breathing At my practice, most signs and symptoms of insidious injury can be traced back to patient’s postural abnormalities, weakness and core instability. More than 80% of neck and back problems I treat are the result of tight, achy muscles brought on by years of bad posture. Achieving good posture is not a quick fix – It is a lifelong responsibility. Poor posture can start at an early age leading to dysfunctions later in life, and in today’s society where we are moving from an active group of individuals to a sedentary population hunched over computers, ipads and phones- it is noticed that postural problems are getting worse. However, it is never too late to make postural changes. Simple, everyday things to check yourself for are; Do you sit with crossed legs? Do you stand with weight shifted onto one hip? Do you lean on an arm rest whilst driving? Do you sit hunched over a computer/lap top? Do you have rounded shoulders and a poking chin? Make the changes today by building positive daily habits, which will encourage good posture and core stability leading to correct movement patterns and functions. This will also provide less likelihood of injuries. For more information on how physiotherapy can help you, contact Joanne Hornsby at Physio4all Phone 021 256 6215 or email joanne@physio4all. co.nz based at Beachside Health and Fitness, 30 Anzac Road, Browns Bay. This initiative from Neighbourhood Support North Shore in conjunction with the NZ Police involves replacing the number plate screws on vehicles with Tamper Resistant Screws which makes it extremely difficult for number plate theft to occur, thus reducing vehicle related crime. This involves working with the Police in supermarket carparks & other venues as requested by the Police, approximately every 3 weeks, but with sufficient volunteers you could be called upon once every 6 weeks for 2-4 hours, generally midweek between 10am & 2pm. Urban & Electric Bikes: Bute Bikes

Bute Bikes & More!

Now Stocking SUP Paddleboards! It has been a busy summer here at Bute Bikes, with our shop running hot in more ways than one. As well as selling great bikes we now also stock Red SUP Paddleboards. We would like to thank all our new customers and remind them to bring their SmartMotion and Pedego ebikes in for the free one month or 100km service. SmartMotion is NZ's top-selling ebike brand by far. Kiwi-designed and the trusted supplier for the NZ Post ebikes. The only eBike brand to have passed the NZ bicycle safety standards AS:NZ 1927/2010. Also certified with the EU ebike safety standard EN15194. Our great range of SmartMotion bikes consists of e-Urban, e-City Step thru and the foldable e20 making transporting or storing a breeze. Also at Bute Bikes we stock the Pedego brand. Pedego ebikes are pure fun, with Californian style to boot! Slick commuters, colourful Beach cruisers, fat tyre monster bikes... Americans don't do things by halves. E-Bikes are Easy to Learn - If you know how to ride a traditional bike, you know how to ride an e-bike. When you come in for a test ride, we’ll spend a couple minutes reviewing the controls. Once you put pressure on the pedal, you’ll find riding an electric bike as natural as riding a traditional bike. With a range of 70km+ per charge they are great for commuting - You’ll often get to work faster via e-bike than you will via car. Cruising in bike lanes and on neighbourhood roads will get you to work faster than your car tied up in traffic. And when you get to work, you don’t need to pay for parking, let alone wof or registration. Slight mobility issues don't have to prevent you from the joy of a bike ride. Now you can ride easily with other people of varying abilities. You will get exercise when you pedal along with the motor but not be exhausted or you can just hit the throttle and ride. It can help you go further, faster, and more often and make you healthier and happier. eBikes will inspire you back into competent, reassured biking. So pop in to Bute Bikes for a free test ride! Butes Bikes – 17 Bute Road, Browns Bay. Phone 479-9274. Open 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday, until 3pm Saturday.

Folkestone Street Infant & Child Care

Just Like Home... Folkestone Street Infant & Child Care

A boutique homely kiwi environment in a suburban Mairangi Bay Street. Providing early childhood education is one of the greatest gifts given to your child for a positive start in life. We are proud that Folkestone St Infant & Child Care is unique. The combination of our philosophy, the environment, and our open door settling process, where you and your baby are welcomed to spend plenty of time with us before starting, sets us apart from other day care centres. Folkestone Street Infant & Child Care has been designed alongside time honoured kiwi values, and is warm, intimate, green and real. Our very low staff turnover reflects our caring and passionate team who are recruited on the basis of early childhood education being a vocation not just a job. The indoor environment has traditional lounges and bedrooms. Children can openly observe our cook preparing a hot lunch and dinner each day. The back yard is quiet, secure and surrounded by native bush with a nature walk, gardens and plenty of grass to run on. Our philosophy is real, based on unconditional love and caring in a safe and secure environment, where personal encouragement is provided, in order for your child to reach their full potential, emotionally, physically, creatively and socially. Children spend many years in large commercial schooling institutions with hundreds of other children. We believe the informative infant & preschool years require a more personalised homely environment. This is why we have developed a home away from home for your child. 6 Folkestone Street, Mairangi Bay. Come and check us out. Call Vicki our Centre Manager on 475-5315 or Miranda 410-1982 for a no obligation visit. Browse our Website: www.folkestonestreet.co.nz – Planning ahead is helpful.

– Celebrating 30 years in the Bays

Kiwi Stories of WWII

Upcoming online exhibition featuring Veterans from the East Coast Bays RSA.

Local Initiative with Global Impact: a group of youths from Memribox are bringing Kiwi heritage closer to local community, and the world. “Kiwi Stories of WWII” is an upcoming online exhibition featuring Veterans from the East Coast Bays RSA. Local communities are treasure troves of stories that haven’t been archived enough. The idea for “Kiwi Stories of WWII”, due to be launched this April, came out of a team of young people from the University of Auckland and Unitec who were frustrated with the lack of platforms to preserve oral history.

The aim of the exhibition is to preserve the stories of 50 WWII veterans’ experiences and life-lessons in durable digital format. For the past months, Memribox has been busy interviewing local veterans at RSAs in Auckland. Time is of the essence. More and more of our valuable Kiwi heritage are lost forever, if it is not captured and preserved now. We must hear the voices that must be heard, before it’s too late. The aim of the exhibition is to preserve the stories of 50 WWII veterans’ experiences and life-lessons in durable digital format. The exhibition will be presented as a unique digital heirloom to the friends and families of the veterans and will provide an open, online gallery where local community can share their own experiences. This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from people who lived – and acted – through history. If you know someone with a story to tell, please contact the Memribox team at contactus@memribox.co or the East Coast Bays RSA. The exhibition is due to be launched this ANZAC Day.

Lewis Callanan, solicitors in Browns Bay will be celebrating 30 years of practicing law and providing legal services in the Bays on the 18th of March 2015. The partners offer a wealth of experience to their clients and the Firm takes pride in providing an efficient and added value service to their clients in the Bays. Lewis Callanan offer a wide variety of legal services from its purpose-built offices at 39 Anzac Road, Browns Bay. The Life Coach: Vivienne Kelly, Momentum Life Coaching & Training

The Meat Room: Browns Bay

A Seriously Cool Stress-busting Technique For us All We ALL have stress every day and generally we manage it pretty efficiently. However, sometimes it can easily tip over into feelings of overwhelm and being unmanageable. I found myself here this week. It affects our health, our relationships, our effectiveness at work and our ability to be happy. I thought it would be useful to remind you, as I had to remind myself, of a thought process that we use in coaching. I say ‘remind’ because we all actually know this on some level, but quickly forget it when it’s most needed… Firstly identify: ‘What can I control, what can I not?’ A great visual way to do this is to draw a circle in the middle of a page. In that circle, write down everything you CAN control about the stressful situation. (You could also do a general one for your whole life.) Then, outside the circle, in the background write down what you CANNOT control. Just naming these creates a shift in overwhelm, because there is less to carry. Naming what you can control brings the focus back to you, where your power actually sits. It takes the focus away from trying to change other people and situations that you have no impact on. You stop wasting time and energy on what you can’t change. The next part is to focus that time and energy where it is needed INSIDE the circle. Take action where it counts. What can you do differently? What attitudes need shifting to feel better? What do you need to be responsible for? Here’s to us staying in our circle of control, in our authentic power, in our joy… Observing the difference in all aspects of life. Professional Life Coaching is a positive, powerful and purposeful construction of your life as you would LIKE IT TO BE. If you are interested in receiving coaching or learning how to coach, contact me on 09 473 0064 or 021 0377289, email: vivkelly@coachmomentum.co.nz, or visit our website for more information: www.coachmomentum.co.nz.

CB: Anything to complain about in Browns Bay? JW: I’m disappointed about the reduced level of Council Services especially around park and track maintenance. CB: Where’s the best place for brunch and dinner in your area? JW: As Peter works in Takapuna we often eat out in the great cafes and restaurants there, there’s plenty to choose from everywhere on the Shore. I also enjoy a coffee everyday at Cafe Sofra in Browns Bay. CB: Do you have a favourite local event that you look forward to? JW: The grandchildren love the annual Christmas parade. CB: Where would you recommend visitors go to when they visit the Shore? JW: There are so many great spots - we are lucky! Long Bay Beach and the cycle/walkway to Okura, as well as Takapuna and Devonport. CB: Do you get this mag delivered to your letterbox? JW: We get the Browns Bay Magazine...it's great, I read it cover to cover! I also read the Channel too - always great reading. CB: If we moved, we would move to … JW: A difficult question! We love the Bays and all it has to offer. If we did move in the future we would still want to be close to our family and friends. Local Restaurants: Rack n Roll Ribs

Not so new to Browns Bay! Rack n Roll Ribs originally spawned from the highly successful Serengeti Restaurant, founded in 2009 in Murrays Bay. Seeing the demand for ’takeaway’ ribs, the owners decided to open the Serengeti Rib Shack in Browns Bay in 2012. The taste sensation of the freshly made bastings and sauces used on the rib sets, and chicken cooked on order for freshness sets it apart as the next emerging takeaway of choice. After selling the Serengeti restaurant to focus on the Rib Shack, the outlet recently underwent a comprehensive facelift and re-opened under the new brand name “Rack n Roll Ribs, Hall Of Flame”. Many Bays people have either been to, or heard about the Rib Shack and some thought it had closed down. But we are happy to inform you that the same good food is still available at the same location but now just under the new brand name. Rack n Roll Ribs offer more than just Ribs. Pop in and try one of their delicious burgers or order from the range of different chicken dishes or be tempted by one of their sides like calamari. Their Chef runs a weekly special in store with items like 'Chicken Livers Peri Peri'. While the ribs are pretty special, all the other options are very good as well. Something for all the family! Rack n Roll Ribs is open daily from 11.30am and have some great lunch offers. They have also launched a new 'RnR Beach Box' which is a feast and caters for a minimum of four people. They can also cater for parties... Time to start Racking and Rolling down to Browns Bay. Rack n Roll Ribs – 6/25 Anzac Road, Browns Bay. Browns Bay Presbyterian

The pastor at BBP, Rev Robin Palmer.

Easter Hope

Message from Rev Robin Palmer – Browns Bay Presbyterian I met an Australian some years back who had come over to New Zealand for a short break and a time of recuperation. His immediate family, tragically, had died in bush fires in the State of Victoria - his wife and his children. This man came to church to connect with people of common faith. It was humbling to meet him. I had a great sense of admiration as he was standing there, sharing such a deep loss with me. He was encouraging and full of hope, and reflecting on what to do with his life that had been spared. For many of us, life seems easy sailing. Others experience the most devastating challenges. Through courage and often through faith, people find the resources to cope, and to remain hopeful about the future. As the celebration of Easter approaches, we are reminded about the Crucified God – that Jesus suffered and died for us, and understands our struggles fully. Easter is also about new beginnings because Jesus was raised from the dead.

Through courage and often through faith, people find the resources to cope, and to remain hopeful about the future. The season also includes yummy chocolate eggs and hot cross buns that we all enjoy. Easter is a northern hemisphere celebration that coincides with spring. We seem to manage in autumn! Optimism, hopefulness, faith and confidence are all important in our human journey. When things are tough, we are never alone. The Easter message is about hope – Christ is alive and helps us through. We would love you to join us over Easter at the various Christian churches in the area. On Good Friday we will all gather together at 10.00am at the East Coast Bays Leisure Centre in Browns Bay. On Easter Sunday we will meet at 6.15am for a Sunrise Service on the beachfront at the end of Anzac Road. (Enquiries, contact: 027 7339890).
