TOP TIPS WITH PAULINE
Head butchery packer at New World Browns Bay Favourite Product: Our current range of chicken is great! It’s such a versatile product that can be used in so many ways. Whether it’s roasted, fried, grilled, baked, stewed, slow cooked or BBQ’d; Free Range or Corn Fed, we have the cut for you and our in-store butchers are happy to help. Meal Idea: Stuffed sundried tomato and brie chicken breast wrapped in bacon. The bacon stops the chicken breast from drying out and adds a yummy flavour. Handy Hint: Ask us about the difference between the various cuts of meat available and how best to use them. Plus, always remember how important it is to rest your meat/ poultry once it’s removed from the oven. It enhances the flavour and makes it easier to carve. Come in and check out the Butchery Department for yourself at New World Browns Bay! New World Browns Bay 2 Inverness Road, Browns Bay (Easy access from Anzac Road).

Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager
Let’s Get Auckland Moving! Traffic congestion and parking are two of the most talked about topics I have people discuss with me. So it is with interest that I have attended meetings regarding the proposed new Bus Network. You all should have received a brochure in your letterbox recently regarding a major overhaul to the bus network that was open for public discussion. I have included the link to the website where you will find information if you haven’t already had a look at the proposal. Find all the information for yourself by visiting www.at.govt.nz/newnetwork I really urge everyone to read and discuss this new network with your community because I believe it is our best chance of getting a decent public transport system, equal to any major city in the world, by using buses rather than expensive underground trains, which would just be prohibitive in cost. There are some key points that you need to know: • Between 7am and 7pm, 7 days a week there will be buses at a minimum of 15 minute intervals on 4 major North Shore routes (plus the Northern Express). • Buses will run 7 days per week on most routes - in some routes the frequency will be less frequent but again, I emphasise that the 4 main routes will still be at least 15 min intervals. They will still operate before 7am and after 7pm, however in some cases may be less often than every 15 minutes. • This compares more than favourably with the current weekend network that has very few frequent routes in operation. • Buses will do shorter local routes but more frequently, linking up to the major hubs (bus stations on the Northern Busway). • To ensure that there is adequate capacity at the hubs, new 90 seater double-decker buses will be introduced and there will be buses servicing the bus stations at very frequent intervals – at peak times there will be an average of at least one city-bound bus per minute across the three Northern Express Services.
buses that arrive from Albany. • You will be able to change buses within the same zone with your HOP card, with no additional charge providing the transfer is done within 30 minutes and the total journey is within 2 hours. • In some cases, if will be quicker to catch a bus to the nearest bus station and then catch the one to your destination, as there will be local buses dropping off and picking up more often at these stations. • Staff in local shopping centres will be able to use the new network rather than bring their cars and clutter up our parking in local shopping centres. • With buses every 15 mins on major routes, 7am to 7pm, it will take less time to walk to a bus connection, than to walk to your car parked a few blocks away in a suburban street. • There will be a bus every 15 mins, 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week on the proposed N6 route that goes through the Browns Bay shopping centre giving a more frequent service. Feeder routes intersect with the N6, giving more options to transfer FREE to the service going to the shopping centre. • This is part of an Auckland-wide movement to integrate buses, trains and ferries and without over simplifying things, one will be able to go from your home to any part of Auckland, 7 days per week, knowing the public transport system, during daytime hours of 7am to 7pm is robust and reliable. As you can tell for my comments, I believe the fundamentals of this new Bus Network are very good and will go a long way to improving traffic flow and parking in our local centres. I would encourage you all to make a submission - with positive feedback as well as constructive ideas for improvements. I have had good dialogue with the team at AT responsible for this new network and they are committed to taking everyone's comments on
board to make the scheme work. One example, is in South Auckland where after public feedback they changed 20 out of 28 routes. You can't be more fair than that! Remember that the main change is that you have to have a mindset of change yourself. You may not be able to get one bus from your home to the city or say Torbay to Takapuna. But if you take time to check out the new routes, in most cases you will find that due to increased frequency, you will be able to get to your destination quicker - albeit, by changing buses. Being a parent of a teenager, I can see this age group really grasping the advantages of the network and planning their trips to friends, shopping or work, with the advantage that they can be chauffeur driven in new buses and use their electronic devices on the way - saving mum and dad extra trips. Indeed, overseas, where there is good public transport, the percentage of teenagers getting their drivers licence has dropped dramatically as they adopt public transport rather than compete with other road users on clogged arterial routes. FINAL COMMENT: Next time you are on the motorway crawling along in peak traffic, have a look around and see how many vehicles only have one driver. Count 90 vehicles, one new double decker bus load and multiply it by how ever minutes you are moving slowly and you will get an impression of the major changes that this new bus network can bring to our everyday environment. NOTE: Whilst I am not an expert on this subject, I can see the immense benefits and have brochures and maps that I or my staff are happy to discuss with you. I applaud the AT team behind this proposal now it is up to all of us to have our say and get the thing in operation as a soon as possible. Procrastination is NOT an option!! Regards, Murray Hill, Browns Bay Business Association Manager

Kids learn about Matariki at ECB Library Children gathered at the East Coast Bays Library in Browns Bay to learn about Matariki and participate in cutting out stars to create their own Matariki as part of the library holiday program. Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. Rising in Mid Winter – late May or early June – it heralds the start of the New Year. Matariki was traditionally a time to remember those who died the previous year. Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ or ‘little

eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui – the sky father, and Papatūānuku – the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds – Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens. Today Matarki is known as the Māori New Year and historically the custom of flying of kites was done at this time as the kites were seen as connectors between the heavens and earth as they would flutter close to the stars.

Red Hatters - Fabulous at 50! If you have seen a spot of purple and red gracing our shore lately then you have probably just seen a group called 'The Red Hatters' with members from all over the Shore. Originating in America but now worldwide, these groups are popping up all over the show as a sociable, fun and supportive network for ladies over the age of 50. Recently I caught up with “The Purple Amethyts” at Java Jungle in Browns Bay where they were gathered for a coffee and cake. I must say I have never met such a positive, jolly group of ladies, enjoying each other’s company, conversation and simply having fun. What a great concept. A group of like-minded friends over 50 that you can have some fun with! If you want to try something new, make more friends and go out and have fun – then you too should probably join the Red Hatters! Windows of Opportunity in the Local Property Market The Auckland property market had it’s busiest June in 11 years, with three out of every four homes put up for auction sold under the hammer. The average sale price at $826,474 hit an all-time high. The new Government and Reserve Bank measures are due to come into effect in October. These are likely to have some impact on prices. Buyer interest is continuing throughout the Winter, as customers are wanting to settle in advance of the changes. Every rental property in New Zealand must be insulated by July 2019, and have smoke alarms fitted by July 2016, under proposed new residential tenancy laws. Landlords are selling whilst the market is fluid and there are more vacant properties for sale. There is unmet buyer demand with less vendor competition before the annual pre-Christmas rush. This applies to all price categories of property. If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade! Contact: Geraldine Zareian, Barfoot & Thompson, Browns Bay. Optometry with Nicholls and Associates
Wanted!
Your old prescription glasses Our optometrist Germaine Joblin is traveling to the Pacific Islands in September to be part of the Volunteer Ophthalmic Services Overseas (VOSO) team. She will be visiting small communities in Samoa examining hundreds of locals who otherwise do not have any access to optometric care. Our practice is very familiar with assisting with eye care in the Pacific. Bruce Nicholls has travelled with a team to Vanuatu and Bruce’s brother currently works full time with the Fred Hollows organisation coordinating eye care right across the Pacific region. Germaine has been on missions to Mongolia, Nepal and Africa over the course of her career. She says “On any typical day we may see several hundreds of people who have made their way to our temporary clinic, often set up in a community room or classroom. Some of these people have walked great distances to see us. It always amazes me how they just line up patiently, sometimes for hours waiting to see us. They are always truly thankful for whatever assistance we can offer.”
Germaine will be seeing people with a huge range of visual concerns, from simply needing a pair of reading glasses to the fully blind in need of life changing cataract operations. A Chat with: Graeme Rodgers
A chat with... Graeme Rodgers Your local Browns Bay Justice of the Peace
Long time Browns Bay resident Graeme Rodgers, Manager of Forrest Funeral Services East Coast Bays, has recently become a Justice of the Peace, filling a much-needed role in the community. Aidan Bennett put these questions to him about this new community service task in late July. AIDAN BENNETT: How long have you been a Justice of the Peace? GRAEME RODGERS: I was appointed to the office of Justice of the Peace for New Zealand by the His Excellency the GovernorGeneral on 24th March 2015 and sworn in at the Auckland District Court on 25th May 2015. The swearing in involves the taking of two oaths – the Judicial Oath and the Oath of the Office of Justice of the Peace.
part-time alongside my then full time employment of being a Fire-fighter (for 18 years). The day came when I decided Funeral Directing was where I wanted to be. I have been at Forrest Funeral Services since 2008.
AB: Why did you decide to be a Justice of the Peace? GR: I was approached in September 2013 by our East Coast Bays Electoral Office and some community leaders to consider becoming a Justice of The Peace. After researching the duties and expectations I decided that I could fulfil those expectations for the community. The process involves an application to the Ministry of Justice, after an interview with the local Member of Parliament. Once provisional appointment is made, an intensive period of training both practical and online with examinations begins. On passing those, then recommendation is made by the local Justices Association to the appointment to the Office of Justice of the Peace.
AB: What are the key things you are asked to do in this role? GR: Working within the community Graeme Rodgers. to provide valued funeral service to everyone, of all faiths, beliefs, secular, and ethnicity. I have an experienced team with me to provide that service to the community. I am a fully qualified and registered Funeral Director. We pre-arrange funerals and provide ongoing support after the funeral.
AB: What do you love about Browns Bay and the Bays? GR: I moved here with my partner in 1977, building our own home in Squirrel Lane. We have been here ever since. It’s a great community which is changing at a rapid pace. Everything we need is here. It is a great community to be part of and support. There are great service organisations here in the Bays – Rotary, The RSA and the Bays Club. I am a member of all three, ex president of Rotary Browns Bay, and ex RNZN. Browns Bay is my home. AB: What is your role at Forrest Funeral Services and how long have you been involved? GR: I am the Manager at Forrest Funeral Services here in Browns Bay. I have been in the funeral industry since 1978. I started
AB: As a Justice of the Peace, are there any set times you prefer people to contact you, or are there any certain times that you are available? GR: I can be contacted any time to make an appointment either at my work, or at my home. Justices and service desks can be located from the website http://justiceofthepeace.org.nz/ and the yellow pages. AB: What is the most rewarding part of carrying out this service for the community? GR: Assisting our community in the taking of oaths and affidavits, and certifying copies etc., and assisting people in their various applications which require the services of a Justice of the Peace. I meet a wide range of people and new immigrants to our area. It is a unique opportunity to welcome them to our great community of Browns Bay. Jerry Clayton BMW came on board as a sponsor for the challenge, called 'BMW Class Challenge', to provide the great prize that was up for grabs. That was 'a BMW for a weekend' and all participants also received a goodie bag. Some Beachside members set their goal at 10 or 20 classes, but others reached over 50 classes. We had 94 people participate, the eldest at 69 years young. "The challenge exceeded our expectations in every way," said Beachside's Karl Puohotaua. "It was certainly fun, friendships were made and kilograms were lost. Most importantly though, a sense of achievement was Wendy Jefferson of Jerry Cayton BMW with Karl Puohotaua of Beachside. felt by all." "The challenge pushed our members out of their comfort zones and many were surprised to find out they enjoyed classes that they would never have tried otherwise. Varying exercise routines creates change and helps us achieve our goals quicker." On Saturday the July 4th Beachside celebrated their member’s achievements with a fun, American themed class followed by a prize-giving. Wendy Jefferson, Marketing Manager of Jerry Clayton BMW, attended to present the winner of the BMW Class Challenge with their 'BMW for a weekend' and many spot prizes generously donated by Jerry Clayton BMW. Transport Spotlight: Roads, Buses, Cycling & Walking It is no secret that the Auckland roading network has needed enhancements to cater for growth. The good news for readers is that there are big plans in the pipeline for North Shore over the next few years as part of the ’Northern Corridor Improvements programme’. Channel’s Aidan Bennett went along to the NZ Transport Agency office, located in Apollo Drive, to find out about the plans that include alterations to State Highway 1 (SH1) at Constellation Drive; the extension of the Busway from Constellation to Albany; Cycle ways and walk ways. North Shore residents will soon be able to find out the latest designs for a range of NZ Transport Agency initiatives planned over the next few years.

The biggest project in the Northern Corridor Improvements programme will see a new direct, continuous motorway connection built between the Northern Motorway (SH1) near Constellation Drive out towards West Auckland, connecting with an upgraded Upper Harbour Highway (SH18). The new connection will open up direct motorway access to the 'Western Ring Route' – a new strategic route being built by the Transport Agency that will provide an alternative route to taking SH1 through the central city. The Western Ring Route instead sweeps out through West Auckland using the upgraded NorthWestern Motorway (SH16), including the new Waterview Tunnels under construction by St Lukes, and an upgraded SH20 all the way through to Manukau, before rejoining the main SH1 route as it continues onto Hamilton. The new connection will offer a different option for travellers wishing to avoid major incidents like the Harbour Bridge being closed or peak hour traffic delays. It will also help to provide a strategic route for the large increases in freight movements in the next 20 years expected to and from Northland, headed to Hamilton or Tauranga. The big drawcard for Shore residents is that the Western Ring Route also links to the new SH20A to Auckland Airport – providing an alternative route to and from the airport. Construction of the new motorway connection is planned to begin in 2018.
ALL MODES OF TRANSPORT BEING LOOKED AT
This new North Shore motorway connection will be supported by a range of other new travel options that the Northern Corridor project is proposing for the local community, whether you are a local road user, bus patron, walker or cyclist. By looking at all modes of transport and proposing a range of new services, the Northern Corridor Improvements project is aiming to put together a fully integrated transport plan that addresses the booming growth in housing and employment in the Albany Metropolitan area – an area stretching from Mairangi Bay and Unsworth Heights all the way further North up through Rosedale, North Harbour, East Coast Bays, the Albany centre itself and up to Oteha Valley Road. More new housing areas are also coming soon in the areas further North of Oteha and Albany Village itself. One of the proposals includes progressing plans to extend the Northern Busway from where it currently ends at Constellation Bus Station all the way through to Albany Bus Station. Extending the dedicated Busway will allow buses to travel in both directions, meaning buses would no longer have to…

FASTER TRIPS TO WORK WITH PRIORITY BUS SHOULDER Albany and East Coast Bays bus commuters will be noticing a faster trip to work in the peak hour morning rush on the Northern Motorway, after a new 1km bus shoulder opened in June. The opening of the priority bus shoulder means citybound buses bypass the queues of traffic on the motorway, before entering the dedicated Busway at Constellation Bus Station. The bus shoulder works were completed over a three month period, and were part of a highly-visible project working on the Northern Motorway between Constellation Drive/Upper Harbour Highway and Greville Road over the past year. The improvements project added an additional Northbound lane, widening SH1 to three lanes, and upgraded the intersection at the Greville Road interchange. There are now multiple offramp lanes moving traffic through to the Albany Expressway and Greville Road. A new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists was also built through the area. This project aimed to provide relief in the Albany area, while the wider Northern Corridor Improvements project continued to be investigated. “The Upper Harbour Highway to Greville Road widening project is the first stage of our works on the Northern Corridor Improvements project,” says NZ Transport Agency Auckland and Northland Highways Manager Brett Gliddon. “The improvements made in this area will provide relief for the next few years while we plan, design and build the larger Northern Corridor Improvement project’s long term infrastructure. “Data on SH1 Northbound is already showing substantial improvements since the widening to three lanes. The opening of this southbound bus shoulder will help ensure journey reliability for bus passengers while we continue plans for an extension of the dedicated Busway. “The Transport Agency thanks morning bus passengers and our colleagues at Auckland Transport bus services for their patience during the bus shoulder works period.” The Upper Harbour Highway to Greville Road widening project has been delivered by Auckland-based infrastructure companies HEB Construction and Beca.

…merge with traffic and could travel at a consistent speed. This would speed up bus trip times and increase their reliability. It would also futureproof for the Busway to be extended further in the future to Silverdale. The Busway extension complements the plans Auckland Transport recently consulted on which propose a more efficient bus route network, including using Albany and Constellation station as ‘hub’ transfer stations for many major Albany and East Coast Bays bus services. The NZ Transport Agency first sought North Shore residents’ feedback on the Northern Corridor Improvements project plans late last year, at a series of open days. More than 500 people had their chance to have their say at a stand at Westfield Albany in November, as did other key stakeholder organisations, iwi and business owners at a range of group meetings and workshops. Since then, the Transport Agency has been analysing the community’s feedback along with further detailed analysis and

This work has included considering the community’s ideas for new walking and cycling paths in the area, to help encourage people to take up other more active ways to travel to community services, work or school. NZ Transport Agency advises that it should be able to update the community over the next few months with the latest designs and gather in more feedback and ideas. To keep updated on the dates for their events, to read more detail, or to have your say online, check out the website regularly – www.nzta.govt.nz/auckland-northern-corridor.
NEW NZTA COMMUNITY HUB IN APOLLO DRIVE North Shore residents and businesses can view the NZ Transport Agency’s project plans and meet the team anytime by dropping into a new community hub launched in Apollo Drive, Rosedale. The information office is open 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and has display boards with graphics and maps of the Northern Corridor Improvements project as well as areas to sit down and have meetings with the team. Meetings can also be pre-arranged by calling 0800 NCI Project or emailing the team at northerncorridor@nzta.govt.nz . The office is based at 33A Apollo Drive with some limited parking spaces available. The office is around a 10-15 minute gentle walk from the Constellation Bus Station.

La Tropezienne: French Bakery
Louis Bouquet and La Tropezienne 29 years in Browns Bay and loving it...
Allo-Allo, this is Louis Bouquet from La Tropezienne Authentic French Bakery and Cafe. Just a few words to say a very big thankyou, to you, for the support over the 29 years I have been in Browns Bay. There has been a lot of ups and downs but I always survive and always will. Although everything around us is going up in price, I always keep our prices to a mimimum because I believe everyone should be able to afford good quality food. I also believe in making our products in the old fashion way – that is why we do not use emulsifiers or fats in our bread, unlike others. Good bread does not make you fat when you eat in moderation! For our patisserie, I refuse to use margarine which is much cheaper and very unhealthly for you. At La Tropezienne we have a really good selection of savouries and sandwiches to cater for a variety of tastes. We also specialise in Croquembouche, which is a cake used for Weddings or Birthdays, they also taste delicious! A special thankyou to my team of 32 employees for helping me bring you the traditional flavours and atmosphere from France. Who, by the way, is going to win the 2015 Rugby World Cup! (please tell everyone!). Oui Oui, it is our turn to lift the trophy! But don't panic, I still support the All Blacks! With a big smile on my face, I thankyou again and wish you a wonderful day. Regards, Louis Bouquet – La Tropezienne French Bakery and Cafe: 92 Clyde Court, Browns Bay and also at 160 Kitchener Road, Milford and 469 Lake Road, Takapuna.

The Life Coach: Vivienne Kelly, Momentum Life Coaching & Training
This is a Bag Shop
Stress-Proofing Our Teens The high levels of anxiety and stress in our youth has been brought to my attention more and more over the last few years – so much so, that I have designed a programme for teens to address it (but more about that later). Vivienne Kelly. At first, I have to admit, it puzzled me. Coming from an upbringing where external factors were so obviously stressful, I couldn’t understand what was causing such stress in our Kiwi kids. My own children were showing extreme signs of stress including major illness and behaviour problems; even though generally life was good. Ok, not perfect… with some bullying issues, pressure to achieve, fitting in etc, but in the big scheme of things, life was good. I didn’t get it. After much research and observing, I have created tools and approaches to clarify and remedy what is happening. ONE of the key factors, I believe, is that in our modern world of instant gratification, fast pace and high expectations, we have taken on an attitude of TRYING TO AVOID stress. We wrap our kids in cottonwool, trying to protect them from feeling anxious or stressed. BINGO! There will always be things in life that challenge us, make us nervous and afraid, push our buttons: Avoiding all stress is impossible. Putting effort in to avoiding anxiety makes it worse. Ever got anxious because you noticed you were getting anxious? We have taught our kids stress is BAD and they can’t trust themselves to manage it effectively, so avoid it. But what if we taught them easy strategies to deal effectively with stress when it appears? What if they accepted that anxiety and stress are a natural, normal and even helpful and healthy part of life? What if they were able to step up, step in and diffuse it? As parents we, ourselves, can cope better with stress and we have a responsibility to help our kids manage stress quickly and efficiently. That’s where the Momentum Teens 4 Teens programme comes in as a useful resource. The 3-day holiday programme focuses on self-understanding; confidence-building; stressproofing and bully-proofing; and learning how to support others – which in turn builds a stronger sense of self and purpose. A new bag for Spring or Summer?
They are all here in Browns Bay... Why don't you put SPRING in your step and come and meet 'the bag lady' Karen Jackson? Karen has worked at and managed 'This is a Bag Shop' in Browns Bay for 17 years. She loved it so much that Karen and her son Carl purchased the business five years ago in 2010. Living locally, Karen and Carl are proud owners and operators of the impressively stocked store. We asked Karen what she loves about her work. “I simply love meeting and helping people with their luggage and bag requirements,” says Karen. “Solving problems and getting things done is what I truly enjoy.” So what makes her business different than other bag shops? "We personally select all of our own stock, with a combination of stock from local suppliers and overseas. We always have competitive prices. Today we are one of the last real bag shops specialising in all sorts of bags – from wallets through to travel luggage, school bags and hand bags both leather and synthetic. We are open seven days a week so feel free to come on down to see us." Have you thought about stepping out and about in a new Spring season bag? Karen has an amazing selection of fashion bags for Spring and Summer, so start the warmer season off and put a Spring in your step and go in and see 'This is Bag Shop'.

Te Kauri explained that it is probably one of the largest Maori families remaining today, that originates from an unbeaten warrior a called Hua. Whilst the Haka is a well-known worldwide, other Maori etiquettes, belief's and traditions are less known. With New Zealand becoming a very multicultural society it is always very welcoming to hear of the traditional ways of the Maori or indigenous people – their mana, their rituals and roots which is in essence the foundation of New Zealand. “The Maori language is so much more than just words,” explained Te Kurai. With approximately two percent of New Zealand's population speaking Maori it is important to continue to educate others about the importance of this language. Te Kauri estimates that nationally six percent have a mild understanding of the language and 11 percent have just a connection to the Maori language. Having been raised in a Maori home, with an open door policy, and being partly raised by his grandparents, Te Kauri went on to raise his own five children in a strictly Maori speaking home so that his children would embrace both cultures – Maori and English. Te Kauri explained that the use of vowels (a, e, i, o, u) are very important to the Maori language and demonstrated through Maori folklore how they came to have a sense meaning and belonging. He explained that the use of vowels in Maori are so much more than just sounds, as the sounds take on a meaning on their own. His visit was a real delight for all locals of Browns Bay. For more information about Te Kauri and his information on Maori culture visit the East Coast Bays Library in Browns Bay. www.brownsbay.org.nz

North Harbour Community Patrol
Helping Police make their Community safer North Harbour Community Patrol (NHCP) is a not-for-profit organisation who act as ‘eyes and ears’ for the North Shore Police and the North Shore Community, working together to reduce crime and build safer communities. A Community Patrol is a voluntary group of people giving some of their time and taking responsibility within their own community to help the Police make their Community a safer environment in which to live. We patrol in pairs, patrollers note anything that could be suspicious and inform Police immediately of incidents requiring urgent attention.
Rangitoto Swim School is now into its 15th year of operation. Started by husband and wife team, Peter Simpson and Jane Geldard in 2001. Both have years of experience in the Aquatic industry, so it was only a natural transition to move into owning one of the Top Swim Schools in the heart of the Shore. The Swim School has the reputation for being “The Friendliest Swim School” on the shore. That’s because the swim school is run by a family, for families. The main objectives are what is best for the children and for them to enjoy their swimming experience. Location is key for families, and parents find the parking right outside the door invaluable. Classes are kept small, 4 children is the maximum number in the Learn to Swim Programme, meaning teachers are able to spend a lot of time with each child, encouraging them, improving their technique, and boosting their confidence. Each child also receives their own special Swim Passport which records their progression through each level. The pool is heated to 33 deg to facilitate the baby and toddler groups. Water testing is recorded every 2 hours and the pool equipment is kept in optimum condition. The Swim School changing rooms and main areas of the swim school are heated through the winter months, adding to our families’ requirements. The Swim School also sells googles, caps, boards and swim accessories. If you would like to know more about the Swim School check out our web site, call us on 09 476 2223 or if you are in the area call in and check us out. Our physical address is 444 Anzac Road, Browns Bay.

Kathy's Angel Gowns
Kathy Rynne with some of her lovely Angel Gowns she has made.
Kathy's Angel Gowns are very special Kathy Rynne’s love of creating is known to many a folk in Browns Bay. Having worked in Browns Bay for 25 years she is a regular face in our little oasis. Kathy began her career in sewing by doing an apprenticeship when she was 15 years of age. Kathy’s father-in-law was also a tailor and she rapidly learnt how to tailor men’s suits. She recalls that her earliest memory of sewing was in 1965 when she attended a wedding wearing a very special dress as a flower girl. Kathy remembers how happy she was in the dress and was in awe of its’ beauty! Kathy now runs her own business in Browns Bay, completing alternations and creates masterpieces such as ball gowns, wedding dresses or items made to order. “I love being able to create and complete difficult tasks that other people struggle with, ” says Kathy. Kathy is involved in a lovely charity called 'Angel Gowns' – which was started by Kirstin Rouse, a midwife in Hamilton. Did you know that in New Zealand alone there are approximately 300 babies born a year that simply don’t make it into this world! This is where Angel Gowns can help families at this very sad time. The Angel Gowns are made from used wedding and bridesmaids dresses. They are then made into Angel Gowns and distributed to the coordinator in Hamilton who re-distributes them to hospitals around New Zealand. Kathy works on these little Angel Gown master pieces after hours. “I often sit at home and create these lovely pieces for others," says Kathy. “Being part of this for me is giving back to society on a strictly voluntary basis and it hopefully gives the families involved some sort of closure and peace after such a tragedy.” If you have an old wedding dress for this purpose please go and see Kathy – she would be delighted to receive your lovely gowns, dresses for this charitable purpose. About Colds and Flu...
How do I tell the difference between a cold and the flu? A cold will usually give you a runny nose and a cough. A flu is likely to cause a sudden severe illness with sore throat, coughing and fever. There may be a severe headache or aching muscles. You are likely to feel unwell and your appetite may disappear. You may take to your bed. The old adage “feed a cold, starve a fever” usually holds true.
How can I avoid colds and the flu? Can I avoid passing it on to my family and others? Unfortunately THERE IS NO DEFINITE WAY TO AVOID COLDS AND FLU. You can get an annual flu vaccine and this is likely to give you an immunity towards the commonest strains of flu (of course it won’t stop you getting colds, as these are caused by a different virus). If you have a flu, or a cold, keep your distance from your family and co-workers, especially during when you’re coughing or sneezing as you are more infectious at this time. Strict handwashing is important to minimise viral spread. At what point should I visit my doctor? An ordinary cold or flu is usually self-limiting, and your doctor can do little for you. You may need to see a doctor if you can’t control the fever with simple measures, or if the phlegm becomes discoloured as this may mean that you have developed a secondary bacterial infection. Go to the doctor if you ever get chest pain or breathlessness as these may indicate a more serious condition. How can I get a flu shot? From what age is it recommended? Anyone can get a flu vaccination from their local doctor from March until the end of the flu season around October. If you are over the age of 65, are pregnant, or have a chronic medical condition, the injection is free. Because some recent flu strains have been particularly virulent among young people, it is recommended that the vaccine be given to children and pregnant woman too. How can I best boost my immunity during the flu season? The best advice would be to keep yourself healthy, eat a good diet and get plenty of exercise. Unfortunately there is no surefire way to prevent viruses spreading, apart from good hygiene practices and isolating yourself during times of illness. What about international travel during the flu season? During travel you will be exposed to many infections including flu, so make sure you’re immunised against any illnesses that might be likely to affect you. A flu shot is a good precaution at this time. Who can I call for more information? Call Healthline on 0800 611 116 if you have any further concerns. There is plenty of information online and you can call your doctor’s surgery at any time if you have further concerns. About Registration With Browns Bay Family Doctors… Anyone can register, and our books remain open. There are no pre-conditions. Registration is a simple process. Cam Calkoen: Bending Perceptions, Inspiring Change Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.
Thinking about that four letter word...
I want to kick things off with a thought about that four letter word we use when things are good and bad, it rhymes with truck, buck, and duck that’s right I’m thinking Nike FLYEASE. about ‘LUCK’ and how it comes about. Luck isn’t so much something that happens to us, more a reflection of what we see, what we do and what we create. In my capacity as an inspirational speaker I meet people who share their stories of luck, occasionally there are the situations which were totally out of their control such as being diagnosed with a disease or winning lotto but even with these the quality of life often comes as a reflection of what they see, what they do, what they create. Meet Mathew Walzer a 16 year old living with Cerebral Palsy. Going into his final years of college he didn’t want to be embarrassed and ashamed of the inability to do up his own shoes. Wanting to be able to wear “cool shoes” and gain independence he writes a letter and shares his experience with the biggest shoe company he knows, Nike. Inspired by Matthew's letter and a string of events Tobie Hatfield (a designer at Nike) realises the power they have as a company to not just see athletes perform better, run faster, jump higher but see all people perform better just in the sense of quality of life. The result is the Nike FLYEASE a slip on shoe that when done up looks like any other basketball boot – totally awesome! Mathew was given the first pair of Nike FLYEASE, he met NBA Basket-baller LeBron James, and people see him as lucky. He is, only because he saw a gap, did something about it and there was a creation. The perceived glamour is the well deserved “cherry on top”. Mathew's story segways beautifully into the thought of sharing our biggest dreams with the biggest names we know to produce a result that others may perceive as lucky. If we want to see something, do something, create something, don’t be afraid to speak our dreams to people we know are qualified through skills, networks and passion to get us on our way. If we want to be the best dancer, contact the best, if we want to be the best lawyer contact the best, if we want to be the best entrepreneur, then reach out. Take away the mental obstacles such as wealth, fame, status, age and distance, and build a rapport around legacy and living with intention. The brands (be it a person or company) that sustain excellence through the seasons of life operate through the motivation of legacy and intention. It is here that the seemingly impossible becomes the new cool. Success breeds success and everything has a beginning. So let’s forget about ‘can’t’, ‘don’t’, ‘won’t’, let’s not see luck as magic but a result of action, and see this moment go from good, to great, to awesome! In a wrap to what this was all about what we do and what we don’t do influences who we be. Who we be influences the world we see and if we look at the world not as “me” but as “we” then what a special place it can be.

Education: Long Bay College
Students savour culinary challenge Long Bay College students delivered a recipe for success at the 2015 Auckland Secondary Schools Salon receiving some of the highest scores ever given in the history of the event. Over sixty schools take part in the Culinary Fare which provides a unique opportunity for local secondary school students to display their hospitality skills, innovation and creativity. Long Bay College had twelve students compete in categories including Cake Decoration, Omelette and Barista. Year 13 student Katie Fairgray was named Regional Champion for Table d' Hote, while Year 11 student Tessa James won the Gold medal in the Innovative Table setting category after she demonstrated innovation, practicality and style in a rural royalty themed table setting for four, complete with grass growing on the table. Year 13 student Kaileen Button was also awarded first place for her original smoothie recipe. Kaileen was inspired by a beach sunset theme for her smoothie and used sand and shells to help decorate her winning entry.

Navigating their way to orienteering trophies The Long Bay College Orienteering team has had another successful year at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering Championship in Motueka. The boys team of Cameron De L’Isle, Liam Watkins Starrs, Daniel and Alex Monckton won the New Zealand Secondary Schools Premier Boys schools trophy for the second year in the row. Cameron De L'Isle is now the New Zealand Secondary Schools Senior Boys Champion in both the Sprint and the Long course after very good wins in both events. This is the first time the same person has won both trophies in the same year which is an incredible effort for the Year 13 student considering only three months ago he was still in a cast after breaking his leg at the beginning of the year. The girls team of Anna Thompson, Tayla Baxter, Femke Jager and Brittany Allison-Carnie came third in the Small Schools Entries. Year 10 student Brittany Allison-Carnie finished second in the Intermediate Girls Standard Long course and Daniel Monckton, Year 11, came third in the Intermediate Boys Sprint.

I Love What Susanne Property: withI Do: Kirsten BishopAndoe and Bayleys Long Bay
The Dynamic Team The already dynamic Bayleys Long Bay team welcome their new Sales Manager, Kirsten Bishop. With over 20 years sales experience and selling residential real estate on the North Shore including the Bays, Kirsten appreciates the process of selling and buying property can be challenging. The process is often not about the property but actually about people. Building strong relationships and understanding a client's needs is paramount to achieving the desired outcome. Kirsten leads a team of seven salespeople working across the North Shore with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Bayleys Long Bay really is here to cater for all. Courtney, our fabulous administrator is here to welcome you too. Bayleys Long Bay is the primary contact for the development of the Long Bay subdivision along with the Beach & Cavalli Apartments now being sold. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or require more information on the development. Long Bay and Torbay have been a long kept secret but with progress comes exciting opportunities and some of these are gaining a premium price for your property while demand is high. Reality is that Spring is just around the corner and traditionally it is the time when most home owners consider it to be the ideal time to sell their property. It also means there is more competition in the market place at that time which can reduce the amount of buyers which in turn can affect your selling price. The key here is to be prepared so now is the perfect time to make a plan and the
best way to start is for Bayleys Long Bay to complete a free current market appraisal for you. We would love to meet you so please contact us today or call in and see us on the corner of Beach and County Roads. We are proud to be the only real estate company that can offer you Airpoints™ when you sell with Bayleys.
